Just got this in my work email from my Sprint rep
http://money.cnn.com/video/technology/2010/04/19/t_tt_4g_sprint_evo.cnnmoney/
CNN did an article on 4G and they used the pre-released EVO which means it will be here really soon I hope.. pretty cool check it out
-Charlie
What's with the random audio transitions that pop up?
Regardless of that, it's nice to see an EVO in action.
That video makes the screen look HORRIBLE tons of glare, and it attracted prints like crazy :O

I know that the HTC Droid Incredible doesn't have the same multitouch problem as the N1/Desire. So maybe the same could be said for the EVO as well.
Those optical cables must have some crazy bandwidth to support internet for that many people... yeah that demo of the phone was horrible. still, it's the best phone as of now, cant wait, im getting it first day

wow.. so freakin cool vid!!!
so.. this thing will work with Fingernails and stylus?? wow
....Supports stylus, fingernails, and gloves
what the hell does this mean???
....Size and angle of touch supported
side note.. it supports up to 10.2" but she is on a >30" screen.

From what I can gather, it looks like:
Angle touch is -- touching the device at an angle... Instead of using a stylus to go straight down (90 degrees) to accept, it supports angle touching..
Size touching - it measures the size of what is touching the screen. So you touch with a thumb vs a stylus, it measures the surface areas of the two.
I could be wrong though..

that is just silly for it not to do this... who would use the stylus or finger or anything in a 90degree angle? It is normally the point of contact that it registers. So I am guessing there is something else to this, and refers to some future benefit, but I cant think of any.
all just speculation on my part.

Not necessarily. I don't mean an exact 90 degree angle, but rather, a straight touch, and not picking up other parts of the screen...
But you're right, all speculation.
I thought it meant it can sense the angle at which something touches it. So it can tell if it's coming in at 45 or 90 degrees... Could be wrong though.
Sense angle?
How could it do that? A point of contact is just a point correct? To determine angle you would have to go through layers of detection right? A point on top layer compared to a point on a subsequent layer could determine angle, or a camera (multiple/3d) could sense angle, but how could a pad sensing a point (multiple points) on its surface determine angle?

Well... My guess is they do it by the diameter and shape of the sensed finger. It's not actually just a point. It's usually circular and they find the center point and use that. Your touch is generally far bigger than 1px. That's also how they can tell how hard you push down. Harder you push, the bigger the diameter. If you push on an angle, the shape distorts as well. It's not perfect, but I've seen it used. I forget where though.

Is there anyway to use the touch screen as a scale? I mean is there a program that will let you measure the pressure your "finger" incurs on the screen? Now there has to be a way to convert that to grams/ounces. I would imagine that it would take a certain amount to even activate the digitizer and it could very well be the equivalent to a minimum of .5g and that's fine with me. An operating range from .5-5g would be optimal.
I just thought this would be very useful.
i believe that there is a point og g to activate
and thats if
a timer deside when the contex menu come about
normal touch screens even pasive digtizers on tablet pc's
only do on and off registration
active digitizerts on tablets though support preasure measuring

I believe it to be one of the ultimate applications because it transforms your phone into something completely different silmutaneously increasing it's resourcefulness as a digital "swiss army knife" for the modern world. What other application does that (short of a TV remote)?
Are you familiar with the force of 5 grams? I don't believe you are or you wouldn't think it would break your screen. I guarantee that you put, on average, at least 8 grams of pressure everytime you touch your screen.

Wouldn't all your Coke get stuck at the corners of the screen
haha u read the words outa my mouth ;x that would be gangster tho
Alternatively you could try making some scales into a phone.
Haha, i realize 5g is very light...But as mentioned above the only thing I can think of that would be useful to weigh between .5 and 5g would be some white powdery substance
Otherwise, if I new it was less than 5g, I wouldn't weigh it. Problem is someone might try to weigh something much heavier and yes, break the screen
Or I could replace and reinforce the external GPS antenna cover and make it a bottle opener also.
Or I could program it to emit the proper frequency to start my "keyless" car key.
Anyways, this is all just for fun, so, don't worry, I'm not trying to tweak you.

Now you're onto it. The possibilities are endless. I give it another 5 years before we see similar applications. Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston right now is already texting barcodes as boarding passes that can be scanned.

A little more green? Smokin a little herb are we? Or are we selling?
I think we're onto something here. We need better touchscreens that can handle more force.
Imagine the perfect windows mobile diet phone which can tell you how much weight you've put on, find you a diet plan online. And order a pizza when it can tell you don't care anymore.
Who cares about fingertip scrolling when we finally bring the phone into the real world and make it fix other problems too.
I think a built-in stun device would be cool. And a personal alarm. A decent torch. A proper flash camera with a zoom feature. Maybe we make the zoom strong enough and big enough to take a person's weight. Who needs stepladders anymore!
I think a built in printer could help but needs to support full A4 sheets. Maybe it can scroll up and down a page until it's printed. And can we adjust the camera so it can act like a proper scanner? A portable colour photocopier is born!
I'll stop there but as you can see, the possibilities with this magical device are amazing!
LOL
i really think theres no such thing as ultimate application
i really depend on how this application will help your needs and so that way it will be very useful
peace

It should of course be able to monitor ovulation, blood pressure, heart rate (full ECG), blood oxigen level, blood sugar level, prothrombin ratio and last, not least my need for coffee.
And my next SIP should read my mind. Voice control and T9 are a bit old fashioned, right?
I want a phone that also works as a lightsaber.
if you smoked the "oregano"
all applications you come up with seem ultimate
and all old cake leftovers taste like the best thing in the world
(or so i've been led to believe...)
You are better off getting to know your “oregano” and learn to estimate the weight accurately. Maybe if you would need this for “sugar” or “brown sugar”, weighting something under 5g’s would be in some use.

and why do you need to weigh grams on your phone?
I work at a nextel service center, and the other day a customer asked about the touch and told me his buddy had a digital scale application on the phone. Apparently turning the screen into a scale, dont really know if this is possible but thought I would ask here.
Thx,

dont believe so the touchscreen reg preasure or no preasure
so i dont believe it would be able to tell just how much preasure
lol what would you be measuring with said scale its weight tolerance would be very small

there had been rumors also going around tht this was out for the treo 650 back in the day yet i was never able to find it

I just loaded up the new android os. It has a tool that shows a graphical representaion of presure. The harder you push the number changes. I dont know how to make that into something but hey it's a great start.

If you mean a scale as in a weight-measuring tool... it's possible to do so with a pressure-sensitive screen (not all touch screens are). I don't know of any commercial or freeware programs to do this, but it is technically possible.
Even if someone took the time to write the program, it might be for a single kind of phone, and it'll be totally inaccurate. A scale should always be a scientifically calibrated tool, especially for small weights.
If the customer meant a scale as in a ruler, yeah, there's a freeware app or two that does that. Some people do say 'scale' instead of 'ruler'. Here's three to choose from:
http://freewareppc.com/misc/pocketruler.shtml
http://freewareppc.com/misc/ruler.shtml
http://freewareppc.com/misc/pruler.shtml
Finally, I suspect that your customer witnessed some sort of weird technical demonstration software for a pressure-sensitive screen OR they witnessed a hoax similar to this http://freewareppc.com/misc/xray.shtml .
We obviously have pressure-sensitive touch screens in our Vogues... if you push with your fingernail, (making a smaller touch footprint,) you can select text... if you use your fingertip, it moves the whole screen... try it in PIE

thats because the actual digitizer grid that enables the touch can sense whether the area being pressed is small or large - this is not based on how much pressure is applied.

Pressure touch screen
However all you'd need to do is have a device that will translate pressure into surface area, something like a rubber thumb may be effective, the more weight the larger circle it "creates" on the touch screen, then scan the touch screen to see the current number of pixels being touched and translate that back to weight.
I imagine McGyver could do this with a paper clip ;-)

Sorry if I'm one of the many people that see using a PPC to weigh your drugs is the goofiest thing ever heard of !
By design the touch screen is a digital device, it measures on or off. It doesn't measure pressure.
If you want something precise there are many scales that use a serial port, all you'd need to do is interface the scale with bluetooth, there are probably some lab scales available that use bluetooth, haven't found from a quick search though.
it sounds like it would be near imposible to make it work
as the expanding rubber would have to be heavy enough
to activate the screen without any extra weight on and still expand
enough for preasure size to be measured without adding
more weight then the screen could handle without breaking
The thread is quite old but I think the original request is for scale rulers. i.e. for engineer to read an engineering drawings. Most plans are print out at an exact scale and it is a hassle to find the correct ruler for a particular scale. To have an app that can display a ruler at the edge of the screen at a particular scale saves a lot of time for an engineer to estimate a distance based on the drawing he's refering to.
I had a debate with my friend last nite if it was possible or not. I say it is with resistive touch screens... Can someone prove me right? it only needs to measure oooh, say a few grams
Id imagine the only thing that would keep our TP2 from measuring weight is the lack of multi-touch.

LOL I think I can picture exactly the creative process and environmental variables that led to this question...I'm surprised that nobody else has had that same "hey...what if!" moment already
I think the obstacle here is that resistive screens generally can identify one 'peak point' of pressure, and can track it's movement, but I don't know if they could do anything with weight that is spread across the screen. So, you'd have to measure out...whatever...into something about the size of a thimble, but weighing much less. I'm not saying that it's entirely not possible, but it would have to be done some other way than just setting some substance directly on the screen (unless it was compact enough that it only created one pressure point...)
Honestly I'd really love to see this too. Not just for the obvious use, but also because it would be great to have for the next "yeah, well, can your phone do this" competition I find myself in
Can your phone keep your dealer honest? I KNOW there's not an app for that!

Yeah, if somebody figured it out I'd pay them a visit shortly after harvest with the shiny kind.
that would def be a app to have! id show some love for a working version that could weigh up to 4 ounces(quarter pound)... with a changeable standard, grams or oz... mmmm.... what were we talkin about again? lol
haha, Seems like theres a real demand from the erm... "Community." The big question is it is possible on a resistive screen that DOESNT have multitouch? Devs, we're lookin at yous
http://www.xda-developers.com/windows-mobile/dual-touch-sdk-for-resistive-screens-v1-0-beta/
multitouch?
Yes we would all love multitouch and in the future windowsphone7 will support it. When I made the SuperMarioBros. for windows mobile it didnt support Multitouch which some people had problems with , but got used to it after a while. You would have to let go of a button in order to press next button. I look forward to multi-touch as I will be able to create games of more depth.

There is what is called "bumper cases" which are pretty much just a ring to protect the corners and make a small gap between the screen and the floor or any level horizontal surface so if you drop it, it will hopefully not break your phone screen or corners. This one fails a bit at the later but I imagine keeps the corners slightly protected.
Ok

My Dad actually works in the cellphone case business so I may actually have some good insight, the one real popular feature as of late is the incorporation of a wallet into the case. So if you could work that with a bumper in an otherwise then accessory that would be pretty awesome
