SMTP server info for Embarq Wireless - Networking

Hi,
I have a colleague who has purchased a UT6700 from Embarq Wireless
(it's embarq, no sprint branding)
he's having trouble sending email, and since I'm a computer geek
he asked me to help...
he can receive (pop) from his mail server, but cannot send.
to me this sounds like an SMTP issue, he's off the network (his phone) and the server will not let him relay mail through the outside connection.
So, I call Embarq, to ask them for either the fqdn or ip address of the smtp server on their network...
The wireless support tech (not the tier 1 tech) said that he did not have that information, and even if he did, he could not give it out!
I've found really usefull info on this forum before...
can anyone here provide me with the FQDN or the IP address of the Embarq SMTP server for their wireless customers.
BTW, we're in the west coast (vegas to be exact) in case that does make a difference or not.
any help appreciated
thanks!

multiple smtp servers.

I use wireless at home, wireless at work, and gprs otherwise. These obviously use separate smtp servers to send mail. How can I set this up???
SMTP
You can set the outgoing smtp mail server on each account. Just set up multiple accounts.
yeuch! I see microsoft thought long and hard about that one

How else do you imagine your email is going to be sent using another account? That isn't the fault of your device, it is the way SMTP works. Most smart companies have Relay turned off on their servers anyway. Yes they could set it up to allow Relay on authentication, but from a useability standpoint I believe that setting a specific SMTP server per account is the smart way to go.
well, I'm not sure about SMTP in other places, but in NL it's often a case of whether your ISP-assigned IP address belongs to the same company running the SMTP.
E.g. when I'm up north in the country, I'm using wifi on an @home network, and need to set my smtp to mail dot home dot nl . But when I'm back at home, I'm going through Casema, and need to set smtp to smtp dot casema dot nl.
I *could* set up two accounts, but then all my e-mail is separate as well. Instead, I just change that little variable, and I'm all set for the duration of my stay at either location.
LOL! I have the same issue! I want to manage mutiple SMTP servers but the only way appears to be manualy changing the setting.
Surley somebody could write a small app with perhaps common SMTP servers and the ablility to add your own server settings and then poke it into the smtp setting?
I'm not a programmer but I don't think it''l be that difficult? All you would need is a selection screen od smtp servers and then get the app to change the setting???
Any programmers up for that challenge?
multiple smtp servers - solution
Hi Guys
The only thing I see for this problem is to use server which does not check where are you connecting from. Something like www.inmail.sk
In this case I use for all my account different pop3 receive server, but all have the same smtp (smtp.inmail.sk). Just every account using they own email address. This way the emails will be send as they would be from different accounts.
Of cause you have to get one inmail account. Which is free anyway.
rastip
The better solution is to find out if one of your email providers supports smtp authentication.
As someone mentioned earlier most providers block "relaying" -- sending email while connected to a network other than their own -- so people can't use their server for spam.
Luckily, some of the smarter email providers also provide a solution to this problem -- authentication, which just means to provide your username and password. Then you can use their server no matter what network you happen to be attached to whether it's gprs, wifi, or whatever.
You can find out whether your smtp server supports authentication by telnetting to it from your desktop computer.
At a command prompt type
telnet yoursmtpserverhere 25
then type
ehlo yoursmtpserverhere
If it returns something like AUTHENTICATION or AUTH PLAIN TEXT, you're golden.
Use that server for all of your email accounts and enable authentication in each account by going to the last email account set up screen and clicking Options. On the second Option screen, check the box "Server requires authentication".
Then click on Use Seperate Settings and enter the username and password for the email account of the smtp server you're using.
Now you'll be able to send email no matter what network you are connected to.

Random "Invalid Recipient" failure messages?!

I keep getting invalid recipient errors for particular email addresses when sending from my xda Mini S. for example, tonight:
Your message 'RE: Online billing' was not sent and has been moved to the Drafts folder.
The following recipients are invalid:
[email protected]om
I know this address is valid. and if I send through the same account via my Pc. it works fine.
I've had the some issue with a couple of hotmail accounts too.
I'm running the latest 02 ROM. Anyone know how to fix this?
I am having the same issue, have you found a way to resolve this?
Yeah, I've found the answer: put the correct server in as your SMTP.
I am sure my SMTP server is correct, what DMTP did you use, your mobile provides SMTP or a personal one? I run my own mail server, so I know what the pieces should be

Getting the same issue - incoming works fine - outgoing does not work. I have triple checked the settings
SMTP
This problem occurs if your SMTP provider will not accept mail from off their network. In order to keep people from using their SMTP servers to spam anonymously they will only accept emails from a computer that is on their network. If you are using the SMTP of you home ISP then it sees your phone as an intruder and wont send its messages. Also some SMTP servers will accept an email from an off network computer if the recipient is on their network.
You ISP does not want anything to do with an email originating from a cellphone with a recipient on another network.
you may see if you isp will let you send the email if you login to the smtp otherwise you may need to get you cell provider to give you an SMTP

Outgoing Email Issues on Mogul

My POP3 account works fine for incoming email but when I attempt to send outgoing it says "looking for changes" then errors out. When I switch over to WIFI outgoing emails send just fine. My ISP is Cox. Any ideas why this is occurring? Thanks
Don
I ran into this too and searched google about it, the answer seems to be that most ISP's block use of their smtp server for outside domains even if you have a user/pass. When you switch to wifi you are using cox again so it works.
Something about preventing abuse by spammers. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Supposedly you need to call your wireless provider and set up an email account with them to send email from your phone. What I did was set up a free hotmail account and used Windows live because I don't feel like talking to Sprint any more than I have to.

I'm talking to the 4th tech person from Sprint in the last hour so I know exactly what you mean! They indicated that I have to use Spint's smtp for outgoing but that's not working either. Maybe I'll try a hotmail account. Thanks for your help.
I was able to get ahold of Sprint's EVDO Support at 866-818-1944 and suprisingly they were very helpful and were able to get my outgoing email working.
My ISP (Cox) blocks all outgoing email that originate from a different domain. Although I had set up my smtp as sprintpcs.com I had my Sprint Vision password incorrect. Once the tech reset my password outgoing emails now work fine.

Sending e-mail from my ISP problem

I can only send email from my isp account when I am connected to the road runner network via wifi or from my computer. Is there anyway around this, different smtp address or anything.
Thanks!
It is common for ISP's to only allow sending using their email servers when you are directly connected to their network.
This was introduced around 10 years ago to help in the fight against relaying of spam emails.
You will find that you can receive over any network, but only send when directly connected.
My work around is to use my cell operators smtp server instead, (if you have a mobilie phone number, chances are you have a mobile email account too).
Mobile networks tend to allow you to connect from any network.
So as long as you set the reply name/address to your isp one, no one will ever know the difference. You will receive from your isp inbox, and when you send to someone, the reply address they see will be your ISP address, no one will see the mobile network was involved at all.
incoming - pop.your-isp.net
outgoing - smtp.your-cellprovider.com
reply address - [email protected]

T-Mobile USA SMTP Server

Hi all, With thanks to the folks on this site, I was able earlier to patch my Galaxy S2's nv_data.bin to SIM unlock it, allowing me to use a T-Mobile USA SIM card in my (previously locked) T-Mobile UK phone. UK customer services wanted 28 days and £15 to do it which considering I'll be back in the UK by then is useless.
Speaking of useless, T-Mobile US Technical Support share this quality with their UK counterparts. I phoned to ask them what I considered a relatively simple question and the lady was no help at all. Can anyone tell me the correct SMTP server setting for T-Mobile USA so I can send Emails from my S2? I've spent 45 minutes with Google and my normally good search skills have come up wanting here. Many thanks in advance for any help.
PS. I tried using "myemail.t-mobile.com" without success

I've searched and came up with the same server info... are you able to recieve properly but not send? It could the port... unsecured outgoing smtp servers use port 25.... If it's just sending you have issues with, try using smtp.comcast.net over port 25, with no authentication just to be able to send while you're here...

Hiya, I tried the server you suggested but sadly without luck. In the UK, I use "smtp.t-email.co.uk" while on the T-Mobile network and it works fine. I have a POP3 Email account set up that downloads mails from my ISP, but sends via T-Mobile. Receiving is working fine, I just can't send.
Interestingly, I've had no trouble quickly finding SMTP servers for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon in the first page of Google's search results!

It wouldn't even allow me to change my Comcast account to unsecured over port 25, I think android knows port 25 is known to be unsecure... the comcast servers are still open over 25... I can't seem to find much on Google either... I did find this though about piggybacking on googles gmail servers with your gmail id:

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS3 or SSL: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
Port for SSL: 465
Account Name: your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
Email Address: your email address ([email protected] or [email protected]_domain.com)
Password: your Gmail password
so try only changing server, port, and login using you gmail credentials
Wow, thank you for this tip with Gmail. While I'm still surprised that TMobile USA doesn't provide customers with the SMTP server settings (I mean I don't understand how one can send Emails without that information!), using my GMail credentials to authenticate with the SMTP server you suggested works perfectly. I did have to verify my account on the site itself as the big G detected I was logging in from a different country, but after that, works brilliantly.
Thank you so much for this great advice. Might just leave the setting as is even on my return, no real need to change it back. It also now has the added benefit of (presumably) working via Wi-Fi as well as the phone's data connection, where normally I can't send when on my home Wi-Fi
