I can only send email from my isp account when I am connected to the road runner network via wifi or from my computer. Is there anyway around this, different smtp address or anything.
Thanks!
It is common for ISP's to only allow sending using their email servers when you are directly connected to their network.
This was introduced around 10 years ago to help in the fight against relaying of spam emails.
You will find that you can receive over any network, but only send when directly connected.
My work around is to use my cell operators smtp server instead, (if you have a mobilie phone number, chances are you have a mobile email account too).
Mobile networks tend to allow you to connect from any network.
So as long as you set the reply name/address to your isp one, no one will ever know the difference. You will receive from your isp inbox, and when you send to someone, the reply address they see will be your ISP address, no one will see the mobile network was involved at all.
incoming - pop.your-isp.net
outgoing - smtp.your-cellprovider.com
reply address - [email protected]

I have had no trouble sending and receiving e-mail when I am connected to the servers of my ISP. That is, dial-in ISP, to which I connect via cell phone, where the pop server and the smtp server belong to the ISP where I also have my e-mail account.
The moment I connect via GPRS, all I can do is download my e-mail. When I try to send, I get all sorts of error messages stating that the servers could not resolve the recipients' names. Is there a way around this? :?: Do I need to specify a proxy. How does anyone else connect via GPS and send e-mail from their regular ISP POP account?
i have the same problem
so far i've used the workaround which is
that my isp (which is not my cellphone gprs isp but my cable isp)
have a www mail gateway so i can use IE to login to that and send my mails that way
Yeah! I do that, but when I reach the web mail page and try to click open an e-mail, nothing happens. So that is a dead end for me! There has to be a way around the SMTP issue. We'll figure it out!
Hi
Are you using the smtp address of your pop3 provider or your gprs provider?
My xda ii is connected via an orange uk sim and i use it to both send and receive email from my o2 and blueyonder accounts. In order to send from these accounts i have to use the smtp address of orange ie smtp.orange.net rather than the smtp addresses of my pop3 providers.
Hope this helps
Chris
Indeed it would help if I only had a means to find out the smtp server for my cell phone service provider. Believe me, I've tried and no one ate Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) has a clue as to what I am talking about. I tried smtp.tim.br and smtp.tim.com.br but neither worked
Any clues...?
try something like relay.tim.it or they should have some data support.
According to an NSLOOKUP against their domain name, their primary mailserver is smtp1.tim.com.br - try that.
Fork.
Hi everyone!
Fidlling with the smtp settings, I finally found out how to send mail over a GPRS connection using your ISP's pop mail account.
Everyboy, when set up an account, must fill in the pop.ispserver.com and the smtp.ispserver.com. It so happens that using the GPRS smtp (those who have one) or using pop relay, is trcky and does NOT work! The solution is:
1. Goto Inbox
1.1. Select Accounts
2. Select the account you want to edit (presumably the account you been able to download e-mail but didn`t allow you to send e-mail)
3. Enter you POP mail e-mail address (step 1/4)
4. Enter user info (name, user and password) (step 2/4)
5. Enter account info (type is POP3 and name will be grayed) (step 3/4)
6. Server Information (step 4/4) critical step
- fill in your pop account info (pop.ispserver.com)
- fill in your smtp account info (smtp.ispserver.com)
- leave domain blank!
6.1. Click Options and don`t check anything! Goto step 2/3
6.2. Select (checkmark) outgoing e-mail server requires authentication
- Do NOT check Require SSL connection
- Select Only display messages from the last X days, if you want
Click NEXT and you are good to go!!!
It worked fine for me with TIM in Brazil and Cingular in the US! Some POP3 services don`t allow this kind of connection!
I keep getting invalid recipient errors for particular email addresses when sending from my xda Mini S. for example, tonight:
Your message 'RE: Online billing' was not sent and has been moved to the Drafts folder.
The following recipients are invalid:
[email protected]om
I know this address is valid. and if I send through the same account via my Pc. it works fine.
I've had the some issue with a couple of hotmail accounts too.
I'm running the latest 02 ROM. Anyone know how to fix this?
I am having the same issue, have you found a way to resolve this?
Yeah, I've found the answer: put the correct server in as your SMTP.
I am sure my SMTP server is correct, what DMTP did you use, your mobile provides SMTP or a personal one? I run my own mail server, so I know what the pieces should be

Getting the same issue - incoming works fine - outgoing does not work. I have triple checked the settings
SMTP
This problem occurs if your SMTP provider will not accept mail from off their network. In order to keep people from using their SMTP servers to spam anonymously they will only accept emails from a computer that is on their network. If you are using the SMTP of you home ISP then it sees your phone as an intruder and wont send its messages. Also some SMTP servers will accept an email from an off network computer if the recipient is on their network.
You ISP does not want anything to do with an email originating from a cellphone with a recipient on another network.
you may see if you isp will let you send the email if you login to the smtp otherwise you may need to get you cell provider to give you an SMTP
My POP3 account works fine for incoming email but when I attempt to send outgoing it says "looking for changes" then errors out. When I switch over to WIFI outgoing emails send just fine. My ISP is Cox. Any ideas why this is occurring? Thanks
Don
I ran into this too and searched google about it, the answer seems to be that most ISP's block use of their smtp server for outside domains even if you have a user/pass. When you switch to wifi you are using cox again so it works.
Something about preventing abuse by spammers. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Supposedly you need to call your wireless provider and set up an email account with them to send email from your phone. What I did was set up a free hotmail account and used Windows live because I don't feel like talking to Sprint any more than I have to.

I'm talking to the 4th tech person from Sprint in the last hour so I know exactly what you mean! They indicated that I have to use Spint's smtp for outgoing but that's not working either. Maybe I'll try a hotmail account. Thanks for your help.
I was able to get ahold of Sprint's EVDO Support at 866-818-1944 and suprisingly they were very helpful and were able to get my outgoing email working.
My ISP (Cox) blocks all outgoing email that originate from a different domain. Although I had set up my smtp as sprintpcs.com I had my Sprint Vision password incorrect. Once the tech reset my password outgoing emails now work fine.
Hi all.
I have an O2 XDA Atom Exec but I guess this is a general question and therefore not product specific.
On checking my emails with Outlook for Windows Mobile 5 from different providers that's what's happening:
- via WLAN I can connect to every email account with every provider I have
- via GPRS I can only connect to the email account I have with provider A but not with email accounts provided by provider B
This is the error message that pops up:
"Unable to connect to the incoming mail server. Verify that the server name is correct ... "
My account settings are correct. I am using the same user name, pop3 server etc. on my desktop pc. besides connecting my PDA via WLAN works fine with the same accounts.
Any ideas?
In this case what might cause the difference between WLAN and GPRS behavior?
Thanks a lot
P.S.: I am in Thailand using one of the major mobile providers called DTAC
Hidden Proxy/Ports blocked
Your ISP maybe using a hidden proxy or is blocking the ports needed to communicate with the other mail servers. Give them a call.
Provider Trouble
Check if your mail server block connection from your provider. They read your IP and decide what is your provider name.
If your mail provider have a network connectivity with or owned by other mobile provider, your connection using your provider will be blocked.
I have the same case from Indonesia, I use Indosat Mobile connection and try to connect to mail server (telkom.net), same company with Telkomsel (other mobile provider). When I ask their CS, they gave me solution above.
You may read this issue with Freeola (http://www.freeola.net) connection. they apply the same restriction .
Thanks a lot for your answers.
I will check that and afterwards post the results here.
Wish I'd never installed the official SIM update from HTC. Have an unbranded HD2 on TM, and after Radio ROM update to 2.06.51.07, I couldn't send emails from my Ntl account on the phone. The other two (Hotmail and another pop3) work fine.
After spending hours searching the forum, and deleting the account and recreating it, I gave up and rang TM. They told me to change the outgoing server to smtp.t-email.co.uk
This is usually smtp.ntlworld.com on my pc, but after doing that it started working....until today. Sent numerous emails and they all ended up in Sent Items folder, but the recipients never received them, although I am receiving emails from eBay etc. Rang TM again and they told me take battery out and reboot, did it and I then successfully sent an email to the lady on the phone. She replied and I received that, as expected.
The problem now lies with the fact I can send outbound emails from the NTL account, but if I try sending ones to myself, ie NTL to NTL, or NTL to Hotmail, they all seem to send, but never receive.
It seems that sending anything from this NTL account to any other account listed on my phone won't work. Hope that makes sense.
BTW, I have stock 1.48 rom, with very few reg tweaks, such as touch x tskmanager, wmlonglife app.
Hope someone can help.
Cheers
Most ISP's only allow outgoing mail if you are connected directly to their network, otherwise it is classed as relaying email, and they don't allow it as it is considered insecure. (I.e if you are connected to your ntl broadband via wifi, the send should work, if you are connected to , say, o2 mobile, or a wifi hotspot, it won't)
On my n95 I had my ntl account configured to retreive from pop.ntlworld.com, but send via my o2 account (mail.smtp.o2.co.uk), with the from email showing my ntlworld address, so teh receiver never sees the o2 part, (unless they look in the headers of teh message)
thanks for the quick reply. However, it seems that I can send an email to anybody from the ntl account, but not to any of the other accounts that I have setup on my phone.
Seems like something is blocking me sending emails to my own phone, but only via the ntl account. If I send one from hotmail to hotmail, it works fine. Which is a shame as I use the ntl account as default
Has anybody else updated the radio rom and had problems like this?
Hi, just spent 30 minutes playing with ntl account on the hd2 (i didn't have this account set up yet.)
Successfully sends and receives (including sending to myself at the same address) when connected over wifi (provided by NTL)
but FAILS to send over 3g or my neighbours tiscali wifi. (As predicted, outgoing only works from an ntl source to prevent spammers using their servers as a relay) however receiving works over all three connection.
The settings I have are
pop3.ntlworld.com (could also put pop.ntlworld.com too, I think, but im fairly sure it doesn't matter)
smtp.ntlworld.com
Ticked Outgoing requires authentication
Ticked Use same name and password
Works a treat, hope you get yours fixed.

Cheers for that. Tried the wifi option and seems to work as yours does, but not with 3g. Suppose, as long as we can send emails to anyone but ourselves that will have to suffice, unless someone comes up with a fix. Seems more an Ntl thing than the phone?!
Yea, the 'no relaying' was brought in to fight spam. You used to be able to connect to any smtp server from anywhere, and use it to send email. (Simplified, but u get the idea) so most ISP's now only allow outgoing mail from within their own network.
As for workarounds, do you have an email account with your mobile provider? Example, I have one with o2, so on the outgoing page I change the smtp.ntlworld.com to smtp.o2.co.uk and UNTICK use the same name and password, and instead insert my o2 account details and i can then send over the 3g network. As an added bonus, the o2 servers WILL let me send without being connected to their network, so this method will still send over wifi too, and so long as you set the 'email address' that is displayed to yourname @ntlworld.com no one will ever know any difference, they will still see 'From:[email protected]' and when they reply it will go to [email protected] ntlworld.com
Hope this helps
no outgoing email!!
Hi all
Been reading your thread with interest. I have email with talktalk. I can receive my email on my HD2 no probs, but when i send via HD2 (talktalk) to myself and other non-talktalk addresses email will not send through - gets stuck on 'looking for changes' stage. My email settings on HD2 are identical to those on my PC.
Also how have you guys configured email to send via wifi? im struggling with this as well!!!
PLease help SOS
