Is my Hermes Locked or Unlocked? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have a Hermes, Vario II variety on t-mobile in the UK, running Black v2.0. I'm, delighted with it and WM6 has been a revelation, it's fast and reliable IMHO. I am a little new to the world of PPC, so please excuse the noob-ish question.
I blatted my contacts during the transition to WM6 which is no huge deal (didn't lose that much), but I'm now making sure I sync with outlook in the future.
However I do see a way out, of sorts. I have an old SIM card (O2) which contains a lot of numbers that I need. My plan was to insert this SIM card in my Vario and then somehow copy the contacts from the SIM to my Vario's memory.
When I do this though what follows is...
- Black logo v2.0
- message saying Enter PIN (3 attempts remaining) - i assume this is my sim PIN code - which I know - I enter it.....
- briefly WM6 today screen flashes up
- then message saying "You have tried 2 times, please wait until timeout"
So my question is two fold....
Is my Hermes Locked or Unlocked?
and
If it's locked, can I unlock it (safely) and how?
I assume it's locked, but I only need access to the SIM card contacts?
Would appreciate some help.

A T-Mobile white 'lie'?

Hi all,
Got my MDA PRO from t-Mobile last week. As my sim card is 7 years old I needed to contact them for the unlock code so that the phone would recognise the card.
When I did so, I was told that I may need to enter the code later on as the phone may forget it.
I was then told that this was a known problem and that T-Mobile were working on a solution. I asked whether this solution would require me to download any software to the phone or to install anything, or any action on my part. I was told no.
I don't really believe this as surely in order to make this a permanent fix they would have to download to the extended ROM. Surely that cannot be done via a non-interactive push from a server somewhere?
It would need to be a save to the extended rom as the 'simlock' appears before it initialises the network from the sim, and thus cannot download from the network in order to check the sim status?
Gareth
same happened with me
jus rang them up and got the sim unlock code in less then a hour
what irritated me is that they would either give me the code, OR send me a suitable sim card, which would take 3-4 days. given that I would only have 7 days in which to return the device if it didn't work the second option wasn't acceptable. They will not let me have a new sim card now which means that i will probably have the same issue IF I get a phone from them again.
The issue is with the MDA Pro. To fix the problem you needed either a new SIM or to unlock the phone, both were offered FOC. You chose to unlock the phone, why do you now need a new SIM?
hopefully I do not need a new sim.
However, when I was having problems with the MDA compact crashing I was advised by tmobile that the age of the sim was probably the issue and that I should get a new one. I was just thinking that if I get a new tmobile phone next year then I will probably have to go through the same excuse list.
However, my initial post also stands. Tmobile advised that I might need to continuosly enter the unlock code for the phone until I either get a new sim, or they mysteriously upload this new software (upload was the term used). Can they upload a new rom to the phone without intervention from the user? Surely this is against the WM5 security, as to be effective it would have to be burnt to the ROM permanently so as to survive HARD RESET.

All "smart" PDA phones have two operating systems:
realtime unix for the GSM CPU and a second one
for the "user" CPU (usually wince, but can be linux or else). An OS update is possible , but highly

Unlocking an MDA Vario w/o a T-Mobile sim card...

I am about to get my MDA sometime next week and as far as I know it is SIM locked (probably CID locked too). I am a Cingular customer and only have a Cingular and ATT SIM cards at my disposal.
My question is: Do I absolutely must have a T-Mobile SIM card in order to unlock the phone? Will I be able to unlock it w/o having any SIM card in? What if I stick my Cingular/ATT SIM cards?
Also - does the tutorial over here on how to SIM unlock it would also CID unlock it?
Thanks!
bump!
I unlocked my MDA without the SIM card.

I also unlocked my MDA without a T-Mobile SIM card...
just get lokiwiz
it helps to read the forums instead of bumping your own thread (twice within 8 hours is excessive)... people will just ignore it some more.
Hi: I'm new here. This forum seems like a great place to hang out! Where can I d/l the latest lokiwiz? I've searched for the last 1/2 hour for a working link. Thanx!
Found the answer. Sorry for the wasted post.
MDA Vario unlocking
Im new here can any1 help me to unlock ma MDA Vario which ive just bought from ebay n itz lock on T-Mobile and i dont have T-Mobile sim, thank you v much
so basically the phone should work fine as a PDA with a sim in it... right?
yes. you should still be able to use it as a pda. you just wont get any signal for calls.
Well, I am a proud owner of a working MDA. I love my baby!

major spv m700 problems

Hey guys.
I am having huge problems with my spv m700. Nothing will install on it (I've just loaded tom tom onto the sd card and it just does the installation little plingy noise and then nothing).
It won't even recognise there being a sim card in the slot when I put my dutch simcard in it. I have repeatedly auto and manually used the unlock program available here somewhere to absolutely no avail.
I'm getting to the end of my tether with the thing and am considering keeping my spv m2000 as that hasn't been any hassle at all since I've had that.
Is it my simcard is somehow not the correct standard for the M700? works fine in my m2000. And why would the phone not install tom tom?
i have not had any problems with my m700, looks like you have problem with your phone (that is what i think), try to exchange it, explain what is wrong to the orange.
hh
Did you buy it from Orange? If so, they should have supplied a new SIM card.
Your old M2000 SIM probably won't work in the M700, because the M700 is a 3G phone, and needs a USIM card, which has extra circuitry on it. A USIM will work fine on your old phone, so you could just ask Orange for a replacement SIM card.
Your SD card issues are something different- have you tried a different SD card in the M700, or the existing SD card in a PC card reader? This may narrow things down a bit.
OK I am thinking the problem must lie with the sim card itself. No I didn't purchase the phone from orange. I have an orange payg simcard and that registers no problems on orange NL. The UK based O2 card I have is recognised as a simcard but won't register on a network in holland. My mates new telefort simcard also won't register on a network but a 10 year old dutch sim card from my other mate works perfectly. Each time I swapped out sims I re-checked mine only to still find it completely unrecognised.
Update on Tom Tom. The version I have been trying to instal is tom tom 5 which this phone it appears doesn't like. The tom tom 5 navigator will not go past the maze page at initial instal. If I instal tom tom 5 mobile that works but it won't accept screen inputs and out of all the phone keys only 2 work so its un-navigable. I am waiting for delivery of a 4gb mini sd card now as my 512kb one isn't big enough for even the simplest of tom tom 6 installations.
I sold my spv m2000 today and maybe think I will regret that move. Especially as the guy thats bought it thinks he can install windows mobile 5 on it which was my main reason for moving phones along with thinking that the tom tom software I have would work.
TomTom Navigator 5 will work on the P3600, but as with all WM5/WM6 installations, is a real pain to acheive. There are some tutorials on our website (see sig)
TomTom Mobile is for Smartphones, so won't work on PPC devices.
SIM cards: you need to get a USIM update from Orange (unless of course the M700 has been blocked for some reason?). You should also SIM unlock your M700, if it hasn't been already- all SPV Orange models are SIM locked to the Orange network.

Once your M700 works fine you will praise the day that you bought it. I've got it for almost a year now and it is the best PDA ever. I've now got it running on mun_RUs WM6 and it keeps getting better and better. HTC will have to come up with a pretty good replacement before I switch to another one.

Yeah I ran the unlock program on the phone. It says its unlocked but I don't think it is. I managed to get tom tom 5 to install by going into the 2577 folder and activating the files in there one by one and now tom tom works for me.
I have since returned to the UK. The UK orange simcard that would connect to orange NL will now not connect to orange UK. My O2 simcard will not connect to any network either. I will re-download the unlock file and re-unzip it in case I have a problem there and then re-use it. I am following the tutorial on the thread is there anything missing from the instructions? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293957 I must be doing something wrong as loads of other people are getting good results with this program. How do I know if my simcard is a USIM?
I think the USIM issues is a red herring- unless you have a VERY old SIM then it should work with the handset- this is according to Vodafone.
This may sound really stupid, but are you sure you put the SIM in the right way round?
The first time I tried my Voda SIM with my unlocked Orange M700 it said "No SIM". I think I may have had it upside down....as later it just started working OK.
Yeah already thought of that. Thing is the lebara network card that isn't even recognised as being in the phone looks physically different to the other sims that are recognised. The only card that will log onto a network is the UK orange one which is now logging on and working(I had a netwrok setting wrong). The O2 sim keeps coming up with denied, searching. In manual network selection it also denies service and comes up with no service.
In short there are a couple of things I am unsure of. I've run it in manual as well.
1. Transfer SSPL/SSPL-TRIN.exe to your phone and run it
done and understood
2. Tri-color screen will appear
Yep
3. Disable activesync (file -> connection settings -> uncheck "allow USB connections")
This I don't understand and when I disable activesync my phone no longer communicates with the pc
4. Connect your phone to your computer using the USB lead.
When I do this with activesync disabled nothing happens so I have to reinstate activesync to continue
5. Run RUU/ROMUpgradeUtility.exe
done this
6. Follow the flashing process (Check the "I understand..." and "I completed..." boxes and update!)
and this
7. Allow your phone to reboot.
See now my phone doesn't reboot itself here I physically have to either press the power button or push the little button on the bottom
8. Transfer TRIN_Unlock_v1.exe program to your phone and run it
yeah can do this easy
9. Click the Unlock Button, select unlock option. Select if you want SIM/CID unlock.
and this
10. Click "Unlock!" and wait until process finishes.
yeah of course
11. When done, turn off your phone for 10 seconds and reboot after that.
OK maybe I don't have this reboot off to pat but I turn it off and then press that little button on the bottom with the stylus
Now I have tried this with an orange card in, with an O2 card in, with no card in and the result is always the same No joy. I am so clearly getting something wrong and its getting very frustrating.
Can I ask where you got you phone from? Was it a new purchase from a supplier, or from Ebay etc?
The fact that a UK SIM works in NL, but nothing seems to work in UK, shows that the Radio does actually work, but not in all locations.
This could suggest that the phones IMEI number is being blocked for some reason- usually if the phone has been reported lost or stolen. Or the fact that the UK Orange SIM now seems to work may imply that the phone CID /SIM unlock didn't take properly.
It may be worth trying another unlocking tool. If you pop over to Modaco, their Trinity forum has a good unlocker which worked on my Orange M700
Yeah it was an ebay phone. Its being a right pain. I have tried completely unlocking the security using this guide http://wiki.spv-developers.com/HTC_Application_Unlock_Guide
Its not unlocking. I cannot edit the registry from a pc based application and it won't let me instal a reg edit program. I need to find an older than feb 06 rom file and try again. I am begining to think this phone is a dodgy one. How do I find out if its registered stolen?

To find out about the phone's status, call Orange Customer Services (07973 123 150) and get them to check the IMEI number (Settings/Device Information/Identity Tab)
For the Super CID, you could try This app on Modaco. It seems pretty reliable. Once flashed, you can them apply any ROM image update.

Hi,
My quick penneth's worth:
I've had M2000 - pile of junk (real technical problems) compared with M5000 - great 'phone, great functionality - absolutely no technical problems.
M700 replicates the M5000 functionality, except with built-in GPS!
Absolutely the best 'phone ever, glad to agree to 18 month contract (as opposed to my usual rule of never agreeing to more than 12 months).
Everything about the M700 shouts out that it really has been thought about before production - right down to clear plastic covered paint as opposed to painted plastic.
Not the smallest of 'phones, but I believe that this is about as optimum as you will get size-wise if you want a screen to be useful for WM5/6.
You will not regret the move from M2000 - trust me.

Update. I got a new orange simcard put that in it and after the texts that orange sent it now also works with a uk vodafone simcard. It still doesn't even recognise either of my lebara cards as a simcard so I think there is a problem with that type of sim. I'll try another Dutch card in it when I get back there and see if that works.

2. Tri-color screen will appear when at this screen unplug usb then plug back in, windows should detect usb device (htc usb sync) as far as i can tell windows needs this driver installing to communicate outside of activesync!
this maybe for Vista only? i dont know? but worth a try!
if i am wrong someone please correct me
I had a similar problem. After I installed a peice of SPB software to memory card - the phone side opf the PDA couldnt lock on to the network. It wouldn't work with any other SIM either!!
Orangre replaced the SIM just in case. However I ended up doing a hard reset.
I think the problem is the way that the M700 handles large memory cards. theres plenty of threads on that one!!
Once, after an install of TomTom - all my other folders were wiped on the card.
I'm now using SPB Backup and am making a copy of my memory card too.
I got it working in the end with persistence. I got a second phone I was so impressed with it. I then proceeded to fall off my bike and smash the first phone up. Broke the screen. When repairing it I managed to break the screens ribbon retaining clip and socket and then fried a power capacitor or something fitting the battery backwards so unless I can find a new main board I am up the creek with that phone.

"Phone Not Ready...." Can anyone help?

I have an O2 XDA mini s as its so called, and an Orange Sim (both UK)
Now I can make/receive calls fine, but when I try to send a message, or goto the "phone" option, I get the message below. Nor do any contacts from my sim show up.
"The phone is not ready. Wait 15 seconds and try again"
Does anyone have some advice to resolve this as its pretty annoying!
I did try a search and got no results, so please forgive me if this is a topic that has been given the run around before.
Regards
Sam
Sounds like the simcard is dirty try taking it out and inserting again happens on probs every1 phone sometime.
Another option would be to go back to your cell provider and request they give you another SIM card
sounds like you might not be getting a strong enough signal to use the phone...or send out messages...consider flashing your radio rom to something higher (do a search for radio rom). radio rom flashing usually won't effect the os or ipl/spl...so you can keep all your existing settings. newer radios have more information on towers...so it has a chance to get a better signal...or at least that's what i've been told...
2.19.11 is common for cingular...but there's a post somewhere on changing something that will let you use higher radios with cingular without too many problems...personally, i'm messing around with 2.69.11 (t-mobile) and i haven't had any problems...
Tried cleaning the sim card to no avail.
As with regards to the radio rom, im sure thats the issue as i can make phone calls fine, so im getting a signal. It just seems accessing the sim card and texting is the issue
Its bugging me because its an awesome phone. Im wondering if its due to it being a different network branded phone to the sim card im using...

if that's the case, you may need to sim unlock your phone? but if you're making and receiving calls, you should be fine...
if the sim card is old, or the service provider was taken over...or something of that sort, maybe your sim card has a problem...something like this was a problem back in the US when cingular bought out at&t...the problem was resolved by consumers going to cingular to get a 64kb sim card rather than a traditional 32kb...perhaps something of that sort is happening there?
I suppose that is a possibility,
I will try using the unlocking tool, but im not sure it would be the sim as it is only 2 months old. I just didnt like the phone i got with the contract so bought this.
I will certainly try. I kinda wish i'd just bought the Orange version of the phone
Oz
@Ozington. If you can make calls, chances are your phone is already unlocked. Did you bought this phone 2nd-hand? The previous users may have done something to it. Soft reset your system and tell us all your stuff (especially the Radio/GSM displayed) displayed on the first boot screen.
Alternatively, if you want to avoid all O2 crap, hardreset your phone and during init setup, soft reset it (poke it) just after you have done your security settings. If it is not using official ROM (e.g. no O2 stuff around to be seen), make a guess on the ROM used, and you can also try upgrading an official ROM (safe to do so).
Hanmin,
The phone was bought from ebay, but was brand new sealed, all in o2 packaging, the seller stated it was unlocked. It was all factory packed and the seal wasnt broken..
The Device info is as follows:
Rom Version 2.21.4.1 WWE
Radio 02.07.10
Protocol 413.1.03
ExtROM 2.21.4.101
Does this mean anything?
Regards
Sam
I'm doubtful that it is factory sealed and unlocked. From the information you gave (although not those I've asked for), seems that your phone ROM is a bit, old. Go to O2 webpage and download an update for the ROM (I'm not sure, but I think they have an updated ROM).
To check your ROM version, tell me the battery icon on Today screen, is it on the top left or bottom left. Top left battery icon means it is AKU2, the updated version.
To throw a spanner in the works the battery icon is in the top right?
Thanks for your help. What info did i miss out? (Please bear in mind i have no idea what im doing with the more technical side of the phone!)
Regards
Sam
I briefly had this problem as well. In my case, I could also receive text messages, but still could not send. I changed OS's and it was fixed. The problem only seemed to happen with one of the new OS6 roms. It was intermittent, and even resetting the phone seemed to solve the problem occasionally and briefly. I have flashed my device too many times, but think it was the most recent Touchflo version that had the problem for me. I was using radio 2.69 Ipl/Spl 3.08. I hope this might help. Good luck.
Orange SIM & Unlocked T-Mobile MDA Vario
Hi Guys,
Just a quick note to say that I have a similar problem with my new Orange SIM.
All the GPRS works fine, calls send & receive OK, POP3 email works a treat but no text messaging and when I try Start > Settings > Personal > Phone .. I get "The phone is not ready. Wait 15 Seconds and try again"
I have no answers to this but from all the searching I have done over the past few days to try and find a cure this problem seems to be common to Orange SIM cards. All I can think of is that the Call Centre Message Number needs changing to get the txt messaging to work.
The phone has worked fine on other networks - no GPRS but text messaging & phone calls
Any advice gratefully received !!
Hi guys first poster so be nice
I've got the same problem but came from T-Mobile to Orange.
My IPL / SPL is 1.03 so I'm going to upload the newer versions on the fourm to my phone and see what happens tommrow. Havn't got the time at the moment but I'll post up how I get on.
Do you guys think this is a good approch to the problem I've got?
Hi Sasyboy
You posted just after me. I got my phone working great on Orange now. It has taken me 3 days !!
You'll have to be careful on how you do it. I just jumped in and it caused me a lot of work and time. and a long period where I thought it was bricked 'cos the bootloader screen stayed on and I lost all comms with the MDA
First make sure the CID is unlocked, you must read this:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435
I wish I had. This may seem a long way of doing it, but you don't want an expensive paperweight do you ??
After you have unlocked the CID and updated everything as per the Dr P stickie (link above) and it is working, you then need to get the Wizard_Love ROM upgrade. I tried after doing all the Mr P instructions in the stickie but still kept getting the "Phone is not ready...." so I decided I then needed the Wizard_Love ROM upgrade. This took me ages to find, I tried to d/load it via uTorrent but only got 25% and then found it on a Russian website - anyway I have it now, and as I said you'll need it, PM me and I'll get it to you.
You will have to download several files and set half a day aside. If you are struggling PM me and I'll get the files to you as I have them now.
I just need to get the Ornge MMS settings right and then all is fine. GPRS, POP3 email, Internet, Txt messaging OK now, SIM manager works fine (didn't even have it before!) and can access all phone settings for call divert etc
Good luck. Any queries I may be able to help, but I'm no expert. I have spent hours looking at this forum and all the answers are there it is just getting them in the right order.
How do all,
Really happy I updated everything and now it all works fine. Thanks to the community. I love this phone and now with updates it's even cooler.

Cingular 8125 Sim "counter Blocked". Question Please Read !!!

I brought a 8125 from ebay it had a cracked screen. So I had an PPC 6700 that had a bad radio so I took the screen out of it and placed it in the 8125. Everything worked great but when I turned it on it cam up with the message " Invalid or missing SIM card". I placed my Tmobile SIM card in I turned on the device and it reads the same thing. I read all the posts that I can find about this and they really didn't have much about it. I noticed that its searching for the network buy looking at the signal indicator but I also noticed the the led to sho that the phone was on doesn't blink. On some of the posts that I read it stated that if someone put the wrong code in to many times that the phone will be "counter blocked". I think maybe thats what happened with the last owner of the phone did. I at first unlocked the sim with the sim unlocker thinking that was the problem was but it still didn't work. My question is if it goes in to the counter blocked mode does it prevent the software from unlocking the sim. My other question is what is the file's name that when you place a sim in the phone that it runs to enter the unlock code on the phone? I was thinking maybe if I run that file manualy that maybe it will get the phone out of the counter blocked mode and then I can try running the software unlock again. Things that I have done to try to get it to work was sim and cid unlock, flashed tmobile rom to the device checked the contacts in the sim holder to make sure they are touching the sim card. Any ideas?
Sounds like it may not be a software problem. If the device was legitimately software blocked, it would display that, instead of 'invalid/missing SIM'. If it's IMEI blocked, it would have accepted the SIM but been unable to connect to the network.
The problem is most likely either the SIM itself or the onboard SIM reader. Try obtaining another SIM card and seeing if the device will read it.
