Hi all. A while ago (read last November) the screen on my xda exec, aka jasjar mysteriously started acting up.. I've posted a quick video of the issue on you tube.
Link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjV-1WRC714
As you can see putting the screen in landscape, specifically in "laptop mode" causes the screen to lose connection with the device.
Anyone know if this is something I can fix myself with the right tools? What do I need? Screen itself is fine, looks like a cable/connector problem. By the way its out of warranty and second hand... so I'm on me own..
Would a soldering Iron do the trick or do I need a new cable?
Any help/advice appreciated! i was loving my exec until this happened.. replaced it with a symbian phone... and now... well its time to go back to windows!
Cheers again,
wab.

LCD Coax Ribbon has gone. Happens a lot, and it happend to me, they cost about 70.00 GBP but i have seen them cheaper. Replacing them isnt the easiest of tasks, but if you have a steady hand, tiny screwdrivers and patience its possible. No soldering is required. The cable clips are pretty easy to remove and install, its just running it through the channels and the hinge.
Did i mention you need a steady hand??
I Did find this....

Cheers n1ckbarker! Figured as much... actually had that ebay link bookmarked!
Steady hand... umm...

Dear Forum Users,
fist of all sorry for the fact that my first post is a request, a question and not a contribution - but im really dependent on your knowledge.
Despite the fact that in general it is not recommended to change the cover of your mda (or xda etc) I did it, and seem to have f***** up my display. The device itself is working just fine, i can do active sync, the taping also works (when i switch it off and guess where the yes button from "do you really want to turn off your device" is it actually shuts down properly). the thing is that i dont see anything, its just plain white.
Image:
http://content.imagesocket.com/images/CIMG4803_Small_805.JPG
when dissecting the unit i disconnected the connector from the display to mainboard in order to unmount everything (unfortunately i discovered afterwards that i could also have done it without connecting - dumb philipp :/ , but right now that doesnt change anything for me)
has someone dealt with a problem like mine before? i would be really thankful for any hints or advices to get my baby back to life, otherwise my old vk2000 will be my companion for the next 6 months (i shiver when i just think of it).
thank you in advance,
Philipp
Have you tried to disassembled, and than reassembled it again?
some times the display flat cable, isnt fuly inside the connector...
there is a possibility that you f*** up the connector, but for determine that we need a macro picture of it.
yes i messed with the connector indeed, but as the pins of the strip were down i thought the black piece wont be of that much importance (i can remember i ****ed one up at a regular mobile yrs ago and it was still working)
can i get that thing back to life if i try to squeeze the 2 black parts (formerly one piece) back in or do you say its over?
thank you for your quick reply btw, i appreciate!

That is not good. i dont think you can do anything but send it to repair. maybe they can replace the connector.
ok, i will call them and check how much it is and if it is even worth having it repaired... if not, then i have a defective compact for sale :/
shayd, thank you!

No problem at all
this guy has a bricked Charmer. Probably you can talk to him and see if he is willing you sell you the charmer as parts.
It seems that my 8525 with Black Satin (WM6) has recently started crashing when I slide it close after sending a message or after sliding it open when recieving one.
The screen goes all dim and interlaced looking but it's really "off" as when I press the power button it actually boots up. When this happens that current text message is GONE poof!
I sat there and slid it open and closed 20+ times and couldn't repeat it but when trying to use it for real is when it freezes. It's not only with the text messaging though as I tried to slide it open to reply to a message on the internet (via wifi) and it locked up there also.
I did a search and haven't really found anything... guess I could reinstall but man, I hate having to do that... what all will I need to rememeber to back up? Text messages, phone numbers, settings for tomtom? bah!
Anyone ever experienced this?
Great, I think it's a loose connection somewhere... I noticed it was out and I had only put it down, not closed the slide. So just now when it was just idle I tapped on it and poof it locked up.
Great... Now what!

If it's still under warranty, take it in and have them look at it.
If it's not, look for one of the many disassembly instructions around, take it apart and reseat the cables.
I took mine apart not long ago to fix a non-working camera and it was amazing easy to get into the phone and remove and reconnect the cables.
Just make sure to read everything before trying it.
I bought it off ebay (supposed to be brand new) to unlock and use on a regional company's network. So doubt I'm covered.
http://pdasmart.zftp.com/instructions/Cingular 8525 Instructions.pdf
Is that a sufficient set of instructions? I'm not opposed to doing this, I repair laptops all the time and they are just about as difficult if not worse sometimes. I had attempted to take apart a friends dead 8525 a year or so ago but didn't know where the retention tabs were to get it opened beyond the obvious screws.

That would be the basics. I noticed that it doesn't say anything about the tape for the large ribbon cable, so there may still be some snags if you use those (I don't know if the tape is present on all the various rebadges of the hermes).
Nice that they use a tool to take it apart, I used something like a debit card on mine.
If you are comfortable disassembling a laptop, you should be fine. As with a laptop, just take it slow and be careful.
(shudders at the memory of disassembling a compaq and Apple laptop)
Word, I hate working on laptops... but I guess I got to!
I'll bet it is the battery header on the board. I had a similar issue and needed to repair a solder joint there.
same here.. i was lucky it was still under warranty..
good luck with the dissasembly!
it has been rather calm lately... though I am a lot more gentle when sliding it open and close...
I know it couldn't have been a fluke... maybe some dirt got in and now is out... I'm sure I will have to get at it eventually... till then I'll just keep treading lightly!
Oh, and Mike, thanks for those links... VERY good stuff!
Hi guys!
Long time no post!
I hope you can help point me in the right direction.
Two things started happening with my 8525 TyTN, rendering it unusable. I do have a backup one, so it's no panic. But I would LOVE to try to repair this.
Here's what happens!
1 - The two LEDs in front don't work! No green; no blue; no amber. (HOWEVER, When I first replaced the battery after a hard reset, I did see is glow red for a second!)
2 - None of the buttons on the front work! None. Start/End, the D-pad, mail, internet explorer. All dead!
Interestingly enough... the LCD screen is perfect, as is the touch screen.
The unit also works perfectly fine.
I did a Hard Reset.
I am using WM6.0.
I am wondering... PERHAPS there is some kind of ZIF cable that goes from the body to the top panel? MAYBE that came loose?
If you have seen inside your TyTN, is there one cable/ribbon for lights/buttons?
If so, that would explain it!
If there are two cables/ribbons.... one for lights, one for buttons, then the odds of them BOTH falling out are near impossible!
I would LOVE to hear any ideas or thoughts!!!
Thanks as always!!!!!
Mike
Your problem is with the d-pad pcb board, replace that and you should be fine. Mine did the same thing, I replaced the ribbon cable because it had a tear but it was not the problem. It will sooner or later cause the white screen of death.
Good Luck
Excellent!
Thanks for the info!
I sure hope Rogers (here in Canada) doesn't give me a hard time because I flashed the phone from WM5 to WM6.
I THINK they may disallow the warranty... But I guess we'll see. How they can expect us to use WM5 for 2 years, I'll never know....
I'll keep you posted!
Thank you!
M
hi,
since yesterday, my niki doesn´t response to touchscreen tapping if the slider is opened. i hear a very quiet metallic clicking sound if i open it up... if i try tapping the touchscreen before this little click appears, the touch works... but with slider open completely, it doesn´t. i guess this is hardware specific. i´ve tried a hardreset now, but still doesnt work any advice?
EDIT: i didnt flash any other radio...
EDIT2: sometimes it does work.
Sounds like a ribbon cable has come loose to the touch screen - send it back if it is under warranty, if not, Mike Channon has collected links to the service manuals somewhere on here which should show you how to correctly take it apart, fix it and put it back together again
Cheers,
Smiffy
I had the same problem. In my device it was: cable that goes to touch screen contacted metal on back panel.
I've solve it by finding manual to take my niki apart (http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/razbor_htc_touch_dual/ - but it is in russian). I've done everything till 6 point. Then I put my v-card between this cable and metal. Now it's ok
I've got extra service on mine.
6 euro's a month.
handed in the phone today (same issue), and got given an new one! ;D

You ROCK! I had this exact same problem happen on my NIKI100 after I put Tom's Niki Project ROM on & immediately blamed it but after flashin back to stock the problem still occured & I was really bummin! I found this thread, tore my NIKI apart to step 6 as you described & I could see the spots on the metal of the inside back of the back cover where the cable was rubbing along with the protective plastic worn off on the cable a little bit so I suspect it was touching the metal & shorting out causing the problem (heck I'm surprised it didn't do some real damage!) so I cut about a 1" length of electrical tape & taped it to the area of the metal that it was rubbing on (I didn't see any legit reason for anything to make contact to that area for a ground so I figured it was OK. I started at the edge & ended just before the gaps where you would be able to see the tape from the other side in the battery cavity) and VOILA! it fixed it! To me it looks like a nasty design flaw on HTC's part but not expecting a recall any time soon. I suspect this fix will out last the phone & hopefully this thread will help others. I am 1/2 tempted to tear apart my NEON to see if the same design exists or if they put a piece of tape in that area.

Hm, same problem here. Thought first that it was an error of the ROM that I used..
Btw: isolated every contat that I could find (nearly ) but no result -> still my touchscreen doesn't work when my slide is open..
EDIT: has anyone PHOTO'S of their disassembly and isolation work? I the problem is different on my device 'cuz the cable hasn't worn off...
Ok,
Now I took my device apart to the last piece, took the display cable apart, taped it in completely and my touchscreen WORKS once again :-D.
Woot! Thumbs up for XDA-developers!
EDIT: Now my touchscreen doesn't work when slide's closed... Any suggestion?

ive brought my dual to a vodafone shop and they have fixed my dual. Replaced a part and software update, got windows 6.1 now, legal and my screen is working like a champ!
I have had the same problem with my touch screen except mine stopped working completely, it didn't matter if it was slide out or not. I could get the phone replaced on warranty though.
Just posting so people know this isn't just isolated case.
mine slowly stopped working.. im gonna disassemble later and try this. im glad im not alone
edit: worked a treat. some insulation tape on the metal shielding worked great.
That did't work for me! Can it be something else or is it the flex cable for shure? I'm considering buying a new flex cable on ebay! Will that fix the problem with touchscreen dos'nt work when slide is open?
theres a 99% chance that its the flex cable.. did you check it for any damage? mine had tiny tiny little dots with wire exposed. barely noticable but it was enough. try taping the cable. i dont know. if not, i'd get a new cable for sure.
It's worth a try. I've just bought a new cable. Hopefully it will make my
Dual working again. Now I just have to wait a week for it.
The cable arrived today and my dual now works perfect. Now the question is which phone i'll use, my dual or my new Diamond.. =)
hey, where did you get yours from? and how much did it cost?
i have seen ebay, but they are over 30$US including shipping.
Cheers,
palitu

Hi all,
I'm real frustrated at the moment with my i-mate jasjam branded hermes 100.
It started a couple of days ago when my screen would get all glitchy. I ignored it. Then i got it whenever i put pressure on certain parts of the casing and now from that it manifested and it does it whenever i hold it in a certain position etc... It's really starting to tick me off... 1300 dollars for this? has anybody experienced this issue? ive heard it's a hardware problem... im running shamanx windows mobile 6 ultimate rom...
I need my phone to keep in contact with some real important people.. any ideas?

He may have been lucky. Here we re-use threads and there have been quite a few on the white screen problem.
Here's one of the main ones - I suggest you look at the suggestions about placing a pad on the D-Pad chip:

Ohk
ohk sorry but the buttons do work perfectly fine it's only the screen... also the usb port is loose so whenever i need to charge i need to push it in a particular way so i just place it on its face upside down to charge and i use an ftp program to get files off of it insstead of usb >-< it was a really nice phone till it started doing this and cbf sending for repairs il just buy a new phone when i get the money and yeah if i decide i might try something that requires opening it up but i just cbf

Well, the reason to pad the D-pad chip is because the d-pad circuit board is the one that the screen connector connects to and the chip is the one that processes the screen signals. So although your buttons work fine, it is still that board that causes the screen whitening.
The usb port sounds like the anchoring solder joints may be cracked. These can normally be resoldered.
Mike
Hi Gr33kJag,
Try to perform the solution provided by mikechannon only if u can assemble and de assebmle ur pda very accurately, because the pros and cons of that method are describle in that page.
This solution worked for me at least and i am very much thankful to mike for giving me solution to that problem.
