Unopened SMS lost on reset - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

First off, I haven't found this on a search
Surely I and my wife cannot be the only people to suffer the loss of text messages received but not opened if the battery goes flat?
To confirm, we get an SMS (or an email) and without opening it reset the machine (say if it locks up) or the battery goes flat and on charging it resets automatically, when reloaded the SMS (or email has gone).
Emails are fine, still on the server so downloadable again; SMS gone forever!
Known 'feature', problem solved years ago or I am a numpty?

I have encountered the same problem several times with different ROMs(WM5, WM6). Can this get fixed?

I don't think this is a ROM issue, more a device bug.
That said, anything that can force the device to save all messages received, not just those that have been read would be most welcome!

I think it has been explained somewhere by someone and also maybe me.
Basically, to ensure that your messages (read or unread) is saved, at least press the power button (if the set is not hang) to bring it to power off, afterwhich you can do anything including reset.
If already hang after received message before you can press power button, too bad, it will never come back.
It is not really a bug, there is a technical explaination behind this, but too long to explain.

The technical explanation is simply: "Caching!".
The system caches data in RAM and writes it down to Flash every once in a while - or upon power off.
So if you reset while the data (i.e. your unread SMS in this case) is still in RAM, it will be lost.
Cheers,
-mARKUS

So, is there a way to force the device to write down to flash whenever it receives a message?
Qmail used to save emails when they were received (I used it before I overcame the issues from using pop Gmail), but I would rather force messaging to save messages than use a third party message reader.

Right on ! ! !
Writing to Flash is part of the Pesistent Memory concept in WM5, in which when it is restore upon reset from the Flash and not the RAM (which is cleared upon reset). While WM2003SE is not the case.

RE
Very simple! Just wait for about 10 sec upon receiving your SMS before resetting

What seems to have worked for me when it happens, is taking the battery out instead of soft resetting. The message is saved when I reinsert the battery and power up.
Not sure how safe that is though...

Quite! (Well actually not at all)
Just that doesn't work if you leave your XDA and the battery goes flat before you read it or the whole thing locks up and you need to reset....

My Wizard has multiple bugs, need help solving

I understand that this forum is filled with developers. So I am hoping for some informed help. If you have any of these same problems please respond as well. I would like to know if these are isolated to my setup
I migrated from a cel phone and a PPC running WM2003/2003se. Mainly for the converged device, but also for the persistent storage. I run a small business, and and am very busy and rely on my phone and schedule all day everyday.
I have only had the wizard (MDA) for about 3 weeks and experienced odd problems since the first weekhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
. Unfortunately I did not buy new, so I am not sure if any of these are covered by warranty or not... I am just going to list the problems:
1) If I leave my phone plugged in at night to charge than by the time I wake up the phone will not come out of standby. I have to press the soft reset button to get the unit to work again. This happens intermittently
2) I use an alarm program so that the unit acts like an alarm clock. If the phone is plugged in at night, and does not experience problem number 1, than the alarm just won't go off. I turn on the phone and the alarm program is open, but it did nothing. If the phone is not plugged in than the alarm works fine.
3) Soft buttons. I have the registry set to remap what the soft buttons do. I use Agenda Fusion (Latest Version) so i have them set to open the calendar and the contacts to Agenda Fusions view of them. This works most of the time. On occasion the soft buttons just stop working except for running through the menus for reminders.....
4)The other day i went to take a photo, the camera said that it could not proceed because there was not enough memory. At the time I had 30 megs of storage free, about 12 megs of program free and about 900 meg left on my sd card...
5) Every so often the unit won't launch a program, it says that the exe is unsigned or not trusted. It works every other time though.
6) I use cLaunch. Every so often cLaunch disappears from the today screen. The only wat to get it to reappear is to remove it from the today screen from the today items menu, wait a couple of seconds and then return it to the today screen.
7) Every so often the unit stops recognizing the sd card..have to remove and re-insert
8) I use reminders for all my calender and to do items. Occasionally the reminder will go off for a certain item 24 hours in advance, even though the setting is correct in the item...
I feel like I am missing a few problems. But you get might point, WM5 is weird. All of the above can be corrected with a soft reset. But sometimes the problems show up multiple times a day. Causing me to have to soft reset in the most inconvenient times, several times a day.http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/mad.gif
I did not have these problems under WM2003. I have a friend who uses a Verzion phone that is similar to the wizard (made by a different company though, not HTC...it has an external antennae and that is where the stylus is stored as well) She and I were comparing phones today. Hers runs WM5 but she said that she has never experienced any of these problems in the 1 year that she has owned hers...
Is this an HTC Wizard problem? A WM5 problem with the wizards? Would it help if i installed on of the alternate roms that I read about here on XDA developers? I am considering a hard reset and starting from scratch but I don't want to go that route unless it is the only way. And if I do, I may just use one of those roms.....What does everybody think?http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/confused.gif
Sorry for the long winded post....
Seems like a software problem based on (1) and (2). Is the ROM an official ROM?
Re:
Hello Hanmin Thanks for responding,
Re Number 1. I just saw that some one else posted with that problem. So I will see if they have they same alarm program installed. I have wondered if everything is software related. Thats why I am hoping to see if others are having these types of problems, and if so, what programs they are using...
Re the rom...yes it the official T-mobile release, version listed in my sig.
Thanks again
New problem
I have just encountered a new problem:
While picking up my voice mail the system would not register my button pushes. Weather on screen or the hardware buttons. I could not interact with voice mail, nor could I end the call with the hardware button or the soft button....I had to reset the phone to end the call!!
How frustrating is that
Have you tried reflashing the original ROM? Being a used phone that would be the first thing I would do. It's going to wipe out all your data and return it to an "out of box" state, so i suggest backing up anything important and sync to your PC. If that doesn't work then you have a hardware issue but I'm willing to bet that should take care of it. You can find the original ROM on HTP's website. Good Luck
Thank you
Thanks for that suggestion....I am hoping to not go down that road, if I can help it. But I will do it if there are no other options. So If I may ask: How many votes does re flashing old Rom Get? And are there any other ideas?
Again Thanks. I am going to download the rom in case it does come to that....
wait...the phone dosen't wake up unless you push the small button on the top of the phone? That is not the default setting on the MDA, however it's acting naturally. Our phones go on a standby to save power. Click the battery icon in the lower right hand corner-->Click the Advanced tab--> uncheck Turn off device on external power
Misunderstanding....
When the phone is plugged in over night and reaches %100 charge some times it won't "Wake Up" even hitting the power button on top. The only thing that will turn it on is the "Soft Reset" button on the right side, beneath the IR sensor.

It sounds like you have software problems - possible a corrupt notification queue - personally i would do a hard reset of the device - probably in the process of this i would soft reset before the t-mobile extras install - taking details of gprs, mms settings before this.
I would run the phone without installing software to see that its not a hardware problem. Then reinstall programs one by one and see how it goes. Some software like claunch is not made for wm5 so expect some glitches (i use claunch and get occ glitch)
If you dont want to hard reset check the notification queue for duplicates and rogue scripts using check notifications - attached - install via pc. Dont delete notifications important for system running - common duplicates are clock\calendar.
alarm problems
Hi,
frankly i had similar issues - less critical but annoying: alarm clock not waking me up, slow system, notification queue mess, difficult resets, camera issues, bluetooth a2dp skipping. I upgraded my Qtek multiple times, and finally i can say that 2.26 roms (i use molski's) are exceptionally stable and reliable. The problem is not Wm5, the problem is how buggy many released versions are. So, my suggestion: look to the forum, find roms that appear to have a reliable history, cross your fingers and...upgrade. Then, resist in upgrading to any rom that just came out and appear to be faster, cooler, nicer. Unless you have an issue to be solved, and you see 100 messages confirming that the rom is stable and does the job...
Thank you meschle and pzucchel for the thorough answers. I am going to try the notification queue first.
@ Meschle: where do I find the gprs, & mms settings? And should I just copy them down by hand? Then after re-starting w/out tmobile crap, do I just put these settings in the same place as where I found them?
@ Pzucchel: Do you believe that Molski's 2.26 is more stable than the Tmobile factory installed 2.26?
Thanks again

Write them down manually its the safest way - there are cabs available but often dont work.
GPRS - settings\connections\connections\manage existing connectons - settings should be here prob named t-mobile

How many random failures do you get a day?

I think I have a fairly unmodded phone...
Its still not unlocked, no rom changes, etc.
I just have programs like: PocketWeather, iLauncher and TomTom with a few simple additions like the new program that auto disconnects data after a preset time.
Well it seems very random, but when I fire off things like TOMTOM it just hangs, but not every time.
Not many. Generally speaking, when I'm having issues, it's my fault. But I do have issues with my OK button periodically disappearing, and sometimes non-responsiveness of some apps.
But, it's very rare. I usually do a soft reset every couple of days when something even remotely starts to act up.
Same with mine. I use the latest i-mate WWE ROM and find it stable.

Do you use Magic Button?
Nope. That's what's weird about it. I'll push the OK button on the front, but the app will still be up, and the OK button will disappear on the screen. I can usually get back to the Today screen by pushing the end call button though.
mine is now very stable. There is another thread that lists the "best" things to do to stop the periodic freezing. My 2c worth is on that thread also
I use Mortsaver to lock and close the device when i'm not using it. I think this results in a very stable device. It will wake up for SMS alerts and calls but for the rest of the time it's asleep - except when you are actively using it of course.
I also use SPB Backup at 05:00 in the morning which performs a soft reset after the backup. This keeps it clean too.
Defragging the Storage card and keeping as many apps as you can off the storage card also helps.
btw I use Magic Button
I only asked about Magic Button since I've noticed that the close button disappears sometimes in "Program Manager". It comes back again with a simple tap on the window background.
See thats the odd thing.... someone else told me to try and keep my unit's memory as clear as possible to avoid possible lockups.
Is the general consensus that its the other way around?
I have the vast majority of my applications saved on my storage card, granted I have tons of space on it.
I do experience frequent annoyances when using mine.
- screen alignment sometimes acting up (will send it back, but I'm waiting for the firmware update to be released, so they can do it together)
- mediaplayer occasionally loses the storage card (solved by deleting MSMETADATA on the card)
- occasional refusal to use an existing gprs/umts (have to disconnect and reconnect)
- vpn shutting down too fast when using it with wifi (after 30s)
- activesync sometimes doesn't recognize the device, forcing me to rename it and perform a whole new sync
- occasional difficulty in connecting to the correct wifi network (e.g. when there are 4 available, it pops up a couple of times that it has a network, but the one I always connect to is the last one to be found)
...
I have been using it for about a month now (was already sent back twice for keyboard and screen issues), and had to perform 3 hard resets as the behaviour got worse. I really like the device, but I wish there were less issues.

After seeing the specs of the Hermes, I wanted it immediately.
Last week I finally bit the bullet, sold my Wizard (Cingular 8125) and got the Hermes.
For the most part, they are the same device, with the addition of 3G and a supposedly faster processor in the Hermes.
The Wizard was about as stable as a Windows Mobile device could be, at least in my opinion. I really didn't do much outrageous with it. I had a couple of games, TomTom 6, a dialer skin, and Good Mobile Messaging installed. I'd have to reset it maybe once a week or so, sometimes less than that because TomTom would lose connection to the GPS and nothing would get it back save for a reboot.
I took my Cingular 8525 (Hermes) out of the box, and I was really impressed by the device. The keyboard is far superior even though it's only a little different. I like the styling of the Hermes better, as well as the nice gunmetal finish. Download speeds are incredible (almost 900K in my house), and setting up Good Mobile Messaging OTA only took about 5 minutes vs. 20 on the Wizard.
The only problem is the instability. Sometimes I click on the "Start" button and it will make the click noise and light up, but it doesn't drop the menu down, requiring a reset. Sometimes the phone will shut off the display and trying to turn the power back on does nothing and requires a reset. Sometimes the phone will show remnants of windows that were recently closed and that will require either opening up other programs to clear them, or a reset. Then there's the just plain ol' freeze. Not to mention that plugging in my car charger barely ever activates the charging circuit on the phone
I've had this phone for about 6 days now and I have to reboot it AT LEAST twice a day, sometimes three or four. AT LEAST. This is wholly unacceptable. If we weren't on the cusp of a firmware upgrade that is rumored to rectify most of the problems above, I'd be selling this and maybe getting a Treo 750 or a BlackJack.
I've had so many little issues like this with my Tytn, using both standard and latest roms, that I've simply decided to sell it. Its just not a great phone or a pda, although it has all the features you could ever dream of, it just never seems like its fast enough and the software just doesn't seem all that polished.
2-3 on a good day. It usully is in the range of 5-6 for different reasons. Keyboard doesn't respond, stuck on caps, no volume, random freezes, screen won't turn on. Gets annoying after a while.

Regarding the stuck on caps problem: if you select caps using the onscreen keyboard, then the physical keyboard is also put into caps. It is however not possible to turn this caps-lock off in using the physical keyboard. The solution is to open the onscreen keyboard, and turn it off there.

8125 versus Hermes
I agree with you that the 8125 Wizard was more stable than the Hermes. I had one as well, and it would go weeks without resets or freezes.
You said:
" The only problem is the instability. Sometimes I click on the "Start" button and it will make the click noise and light up, but it doesn't drop the menu down, requiring a reset."
I believe this is due to the external storage becoming lost. Since WM5 doesn't expect storage to ever go away, it just freezes waiting on the storage to come back. In the case of the start menu, I think it's waiting so it can get the icons of recently used programs. Just a theory.
To fight this problem, I've loaded weather programs and the like into main memory so that external storage is only accessed when I'm playing with the phone. That's made my hermes a lot more reliable, down to a failure or freeze every few days. Not as good as the Wizard, but tolerable.
I'm having a TON of problems...
I have my Cingular 8525 HTC
ROM Version: 1.34.502.1
ROM date: 09/21/06
Radio Version: 1.16.00.00
Protocol Version: 32.53.7018.01H
I am having horrible problems with it randomly locking up, and I have to soft-reset. This usually happens when I have it on the charger overnight, and someone text messages me while it's on the charger... and of course when I soft-reset I lose all the messages! What's even worse is when it boots back up it'll vibrate, and beep for a long time like it's getting messages and I have to just ignore it and put it on silent... but there are no messages! Is there a way to fix this? What do I do?! I'm starting to get very frustrated with the phone - the only thing I use repeatedly on here is the MS ActiveSync over the air...
Do you think this could also be something to do with the variant?
I have Vario II from T-mobile, with all their stuff still on it, and I have installed/uninstalled goodness knows how much stuff, and don't really have this problem at all (touches wood). I can go for 3 or 4 days without soft reset, and then that is usually after a backup, when you have to.
I have all today screen and any software which is in startup, installed to main memory.
Also, could password screen have something to do with this? If on charge, and password protected, maybe they interfere with each other on receipt of text message. You could try removing password for overnight.
Have you tried leaving messaging running minimised overnight?
Also, have you moved any databases to storage card?

This is an interesting idea. I will leave the messaging minimized overnight tonight. The password screen is there as a matter of policy - through my work - since the company owns the device and they push policy to it which requires a password PIN to be entered after 15min of inactivity... I'll try that?

Are you sure that the sounds are messages rather than notifications?
It could be that your notifications queue is gummed up with lots of stuff. Suggest you get Memmaid or similar, download the trial and run the notifications queue duplicates remover. Then look at any of the entries marked Calendar and check to see if any of these are in the past. If they are remove them. LEAVE ALONE any notifications that are not Calendar with a description of one of your appointments or reminders.
Worth a try.
I also had some troubles. It freezes anywhere between 2 and 20 times per day. I just did a hard reset few days ago and tried to determine if any of my programs installed causes it.
It runs quiet well with nothing installed. Most freezes i get after installing SBSH WeatherMonitor.
About the sudden loss of external memory, i cannot complain. I install everything system related into the main memory. But weather and flexmail are on the card. I even take the card out having the phone running.
Not probs there.
Generally my Blue Angel is a far better phone, although bulky like my grand mother and not useful in Japan.
Thanks for the replies. After reading through this thread it seems I am not the only one with problems. Nearly every 8525 problem I've had can be solved, they just keep coming back. Like 8525 not recognizing Storage Card music. The worst for me ( happens a lot ) is that when I put the phone on the charger, then the screen shuts off to save power, but when I take the charger out the screen cannot be turned back on and needs a soft reset.

Problems with messages

I have a problem with my tytn and messages.
I have a messages in my messagesbox, not much. I deleted some of those messages and do a soft reset at my phone. When i open messagebox again, all those deleted messages are back. I look what´s the problem and i discovered that all my messages witch i had received after 15.2.2007 will all missing and before 15.2 received messages will return to my messagebox, even that i permanetly deleted all those messages. So, it´s look like my messagebox gets somewhere "message-backup" wich has been taken 15.2.2007.
I did a hard reset and try if the problem will disappear. First that works fine, my messagebox worked as it´s use to work, but now it´s doing all the same things as before. Except now when i do a softreset, all my messages is disappeared.
Sorry my bad english, hope you understand what i´m writing about.
I can only think it works this way, when you do a soft reset it is like pressing the reset button on your pc?! so if Messaging is running when you reset you lose ALL unsaved changes. If you leave outlook alone for a bit the changes take effect (deleting and recieving messages?!)
What u need to do next time before u soft reset your device is turn off ur phone and wait for about 15 to 20 seconds so the mem will be written to ur phone rom. See if it helps.
Now i turn off the power and wait couple minutes and switch power on. All messages was still in my messagebox. Now, when i do a softreset, my messagebox will be same, as it was after i switch thge power off. So, it´s like making a "message backup" when i turn the power off and on. When i do softreset, my messaqgebox will return as same as it was after last power off/power on. So, what´s the problem`Do i have to bring my phone to serviceguys?

Windows Mobile 5 - not saving settings.

A few months ago, I upgraded from a Magician to a Prophet.
About a week after use, the prophet started to develop some problems. The SIM card reader stopped reading any SIM cards, and settings would not save at random.
The issue with the settings not saving was, say, I would receive an SMS, read it, check that it was marked as read, soft reset, and the SMS would either be marked as unread, or simply not be present on the phone at all. I would change the time and the timezone, double check and confirm the change, the change in time would save, but the timezone would not. I'd make a registry change, close the registry editor, recheck the value, confirm the change, soft reset, and the change would not get saved. I'd open File Explorer, check the recent apps, confirm that File Explorer was there, soft reset, and File Explorer would not be present within the recent apps after the soft reset.
Concerning this issue, the longer you left the phone after making the change, the more likely the change would save. But this would still not save everything. I'd receive a meeting reminder, dismiss it, then several hours later I'd soft reset and I'd be reminded again.
Of course, this issue persists through a hard reset.
I've sent the phone back to the warranty repairers three times, each time with a clear description of the above. Each time they send it back saying "No fault found", to which I can immediately replicate the fault upon return.
This time, when I received the phone back, they, once again, said they couldn't replicate the issue. But this time they decided to mention that I needed to wait 30 seconds to "ensure settings get saved".
What a load of bull****. My Magician does not have this issue. But I don't have any Windows Mobile 5 devices to test this on. Can I have some people confirm that you don't need to wait 30 seconds on Windows Mobile 5 devices to ensure settings save?
For a phone user, you certainlly needs a lot of soft reset. Yes, WM5 has a delayed write process, many already know this. As for the SMS and reminder, it is unlikely that people will be soft reseting it after dismissing a reminder. Anyway, the way to solve it (without waiting for 30 sec), is to switch your phone on and off, the stuff should stick.
Yes, what a lot of bull**** that a Magician does not have this issue, but that's an apple and a orange. Try removing the battery of a Magician, you will have to hardreset the phoen again and all the stuff gone, WM5's wont. Long story short, because of the persistant memory's limited read/write cycle, WM5 decided to do that. Google for more info.

Dialer lag

Does anyone got noticeable delay in start of the call when tap contact from the call history list?
I suspect it started after latest (1.31.405.4) ROM installation and happens periodically - you just tap the contact and nothing happens (sometimes at all but sometimes it reacts after minute or so and suddenly starts to call).
There could be at least two causes:
1. No reaction on actual "tap" (hard to explain why it finally calls sometimes but I noticed that Call button could give different reactions comparing to clicks on actual contact)
2. Process that executes call is doing something in the background (freeing up memory? restarting? doing some sync?)
After it "breaks through" it works for some time seamlessly - you just touch the contact and it calls immediately but after some time (even after phone reboot) the glitch is back
NB. I uninstalled almost all apps (including beautiful Timeriffic) I've got from Android Market and prey it's not related to the Exchange Sync and apps around it... Let's see if I still have problem tomorrow.
same problem i got. any solution pls tell.

it could be a memory leak or something who knows,
the phone hasnt been out for long and there may be more updates comming.
plus if its a performance problem then when android 2.2 comes out with the JIT compiler it should be faster
lifeis, do you have any applications (in addition to pre-installed) on your device?
Version 1
The more I observe situations when dialer "hangs" the more I suspect that it happens due to some synchronization. Already several times I noticed such behavior starts when "data" icon indicates some outgoing traffic but nothing comes back (no active incoming arrow). Could it be that it tries to sync contact (with Exchange? Twitter? Facebook? Gmail?) and at the OS level it sees that network is "available" (somebody here already complained about similar issues) so needs to time-out instead of skip that attempt and proceed with requested operation immediately?
mee too
Today i notice that when i press the contact and after i pres power button screen goes and comes and phone starts dialing. I think sync cause this. May be latest update they can solve this. I had a hero and hero did n't have problem like that.
Dialer lag present on my device aswell. its not often and oddly happens when no apps are running in background. I think it conflicts with whatever sync services may be syncing at the time one tries to make a call
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Same with mine. There is also a lag when I press the "Sync All' immediately after a WiFi connection is established.
Hope they fix this as it is quite annoying. And also make Maps 4 "officially" available to Legend.

I started after updating the legend software!
Anyone have a solution?

Does anyone willing to try? Not sure that I'm ready to spend another half a day restoring all settings and configurations after factory reset (also suspect that chances to succeed are not too high)...
Ah c'mon! that's like "hey do you have a problem with one application in windows? Ok that's the solution: go to ms dos and then type "format c:\"....
Ridiculus. HTC should just understand what's going on and release an update!
The reset actually works. I have not re-installed all of the applications i had before and did not use the backup file to restore the phone in its previous state so the dissappearence of the lag might be due to some setting being restored to default, but whatever the reason, the legend is now much faster.
Factory reset
Have you also installed latest ROM after factory reset?

Actually the update was still there after the reset - I didn't have to update again.
More observations
Interesting observations:
You try to call - dialer hangs
If you return to home screen you see that widget time is correct while status string on the top shows "outdated" time
If you try to browse some web page it connects and you see the content - I got feeling that this is some kind of "break thorough" since after that -->
Time at the status string gets updated
Almost immediately after that phone starts calling
Reset
Gave up and did factory reset - took couple of hours to restore it to the wanted state. Let's see if that solves the problem or I get issue back after returning configuration to the desired state.
Last observation I did before reset: problem disappears (or minimizes?) if I keep WiFi off - especially if Legend sees some network around but isn't connected. The same applies if it unsuccessfully tries to connect to some faulty router - most probably dialer lag starts after that...
Hi everybody,
Factory reset helped here. I didn't make lots of tests but after 3 days of using I didn't notice the lag.
Regards,
Michal

Hi everyone,
I had the same problem and the factory reset helped me,too.
I believe that either the rom update or one of the applications I have installed was causing the problem.
Now I will begin re-installing all the applications I had before and see if the problem will reappear again.

It appears that storing (remembering) wifi networks slows down connecting to any of them when present. When I only have one network remembered connecting to it is almost instant, while as soon as I remember other network setting, connecting to same network is much slower, even if is the only one present.
