Remedy: 8125 Freezing And / Or Slow Down - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi Gang:
I have recently been trying to solve a puzzling issue that I was experiencing with my 8125, and I wanted to share the problem and (partial) solution with everyone in case this ever crops up again. I did pretty extensive searches here (and elsewhere), and could not find a single case of this problem happening to someone else. I tried every combination of search terms that I could think of...
Description: 8125 Freezing or Slow Down Upon Attempted Access of Phone Settings or other settings icons
Background: My (heavily-customized/optimized) 8125 had been stable for weeks, with no significant "upgrades" for over a month. Then I upgraded to MS VC 1.6. A few days after this upgrade, my phone got quite wonky (e.g. alarm going off non-stop, etc.) due to the notification queue getting clogged. I don't know if this is the fault of MS VC or not, though. Thanks to Memmaid & CheckNotifications, I cleared out the queue. At this time the phone appeared to be functioning normally.
A few days later, I tried to access the phone settings to manually select the network provider (traveling internationally). However, regardless of which route I would take to access the phone settings, the phone would freeze, quit responding, or greatly slow down. A soft reset was necessary to "un-freeze" the phone. Also, even if I tried to access other icons (e.g. Sounds & Notifications, when clicking on the Notification tab) under Start/Settings, the phone would quit responding.
Corrective Steps:
I initially worked the smartphone support folks in my employer's IT dept & Cingular tech support. Neither group was aware of this being a regular problem with the 8125.
1. Multiple soft resets – no help
2. Multiple hard resets – no help
3. Cingular replaced my 8125 – no help
4. Multiple hard resets of phone #2 – no help
5. Got a new SIM card – no help, but met a new Cingular tech
6. Hard reset** of new phone + new SIM card = OK
** Everything working OK now, with this "special" hard reset. During the setup procedure, I skipped the password setting screen, then let the phone unpack the ROM. In all previous attempts, I had enabled this password during setup (company policy, can't sync to Exchange server w/o it). According to the new Cingular tech that I met while getting my new SIM card, having this password set before the ROM is unpacked can "corrupt" the ROM unpacking. I don't know how true this last point is, but it sounded reasonable -- and it worked.
Next, I synced the phone (via USB) – guess what? The problem was back! Sooo, another hard reset and I decided to sync via EDGE first (i.e. email, calendar, contacts,& tasks only). The phone was still working!
After inspecting the ActiveSync settings on my PC, I noticed that I was not only sync'ing the 4 items above (from the Exchange server), but also "Notes" from my PC. This had to be the problem, so I disabled the sync'ing of Notes.
THE PHONE STILL WORKED AFTER A USB SYNC!!
Apparently there was some conflict related to the sync'ing of notes that was corrupting a key system file on the phone. Not sure what the root cause was, but by disabling the Notes sync the phone is working great again. I know this was a bit long-winded, but hopefully it will help someone in the future.
Of course, if someone has any ideas about how I might be able to reliably sync notes again, I would love to hear 'em. For now, I am doing without.
regards,
bg

Hey thanks a lot for the info. I have been havng a lot of problems with my 8125 so hopefully this will help.

Mail Boxes in JasJar keep disappearing?

I have a JasJar and when I switch sims the mailboxes keep disappearing. I still see them in the TODAY screen but when I try to select them they are nowhere to be found. I also try to manually go to messaging but they are missing from there too. I keep creating new boxes and they are starting to number up Yahoo1, Yahoo2 etc.
Help Me.
Thanks.
Yeah i have experienced the same thing, whats seems to work for me is making sure you close down all apps before a soft reset or sim card change, go to start settings system memory running program list and stop all
This works for me every time now and i no longer have to set up my mail accounts
All you need to do is to turn off your device off for a while (a couple of seconds will do) before you reset.
It's because WM5 caches data to speed up the device a bit, and if you reset your device before it gets a chance to permanently write the data, it gets lost.
Best thing is to shut off before you do a reset, in case you lose data.
Well I sent mine to service, switched the mainboard and i can soft reset at anytime now, never looses any data any more.
Same Rom and config but the problem is completly gone

Which Universal device did you have exactly?
I have a Qtek 9000 that seems to be forgetting its authentications and I can't figure it out. Nothing else seems to be wrong with it which leads me to think it HAS to be a software issue, but I can't pin it down!
The only weird things I'm experiencing: Bluetooth devices lose pairing (device redetects them and asks for PIN), Wi-Fi access points get wiped clean (get prompted for WPA keys), and infrequently the Exchange Server password in ActiveSync and the GPRS login information to Cingular are asked even when "Save password" is set.
Qtek 9000 from Dangaard Norway
Min wiped Email settings, Wlan, and some GPRS settings
Don't know about BT, dident use it before i sent it back.
Thanks Bosjo, I was beginning to think I was the only one, or that it was a software issue.
I believe it's related to the fact that the IMEI temporarily disappears from the phone, so it loses authentication of itself and therefore the devices or credentials its encrypted with.
I posted full details here http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=797931 and will likely be shipping it back to the supplier tomorrow for replacement.
That's true, I totally forgot about the Imei disapering.
It also failed to display the radio version.
I know for sure that they actually switched the mainboard cause I have a different MAC adress, haven't checked the Imei number though.
It's a bit funny that this is a hardware error, one would think that it should forgett all settings then and not just pieces off it
Got the same problem. Im seeing my mail account on the today screen but can't access it, if i search for the e-mail's i can find them but can't access them. Anyone find a workaround or where can i delete my mail account i had before it dissapred, becuase now if i try to add the mail account again with the same name as last time it says that i alredy got a account but i can't edit it :/... Please help
damn, nobody found a solution for this? search thru the registry twice without a result ;/
does this happen only when you take off the battery?
another one ....
any solution for it....
regards
ady: nah when i do a soft reset
can't find it in somewhere in the registry either so don't know how i could remove this damn buggy thing :/

Direct Push Intermitently Working

I recently dropped by phone in a puddle (e have all done it!) and T-mobile very nicely sent me a replacement phone.
Before the incident my pushmail was working perfectly.
I set up my new phone in exactly the same way and now i have big problems with the push mail.
IT will always sync via USB, however via GPRS it is very tempremental and sometimes works, sometimes doesnt. The down time can last days, . I end up getting an error message "the server could not be reached. This can be caused by temp network conditions, support code: 0x80072EE4".
No one else in office has this problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem - i was wondering if i have been sent a duff replacement and should ask T-mobile for another one.
Any help would be appreciated
still have this problem - can anyone help?
reboot?
I have similar problems though not necessarily the same: if I've synced using USB the sync via GPRS/3G never works unless I reboot the phone (hold the power button and let the phone power down, then restart). Maybe going to flight mode and back also works - not sure.
think my problem is to do with my server.
i got in contact with tmobile specialist team and tested my phone on there server and it worked fine
my it guy is working on it - will let you know if easy fix
I have this problem with the exchange server mobile.exchange.mail2web.com
I think it's a fault with an option in my phone. Anyone of you figured it out?
Other phones works fine with mail2web.com
Thanks
According to the a quick google search, that error message relates to automatic updates...Either way, with Exchange it's always a good idea when having problems to completely remove the server source, reset your phone and then re-enter the information and let it completely re-sync again...

Tytn and Blackberry connect service - useless?

Ok my brain is about to explode…Does the bbconnect service do anything other than the push mail? I know this sound like a stupid question but bear with me.
I installed 4_1_.0.0.67 on my tytn and all hell broke out
- The blackberry software has hijacked the security login screen I had set up originally from my numeric touch login screen to a goggle-like field for which I have to either open up the keyboard or use the useless onscreen keyboard. If I shut down the security from the ‘blackberry security’ icon and go back to the tytn installed ‘lock’ icon it takes me back the 'blackberry security' screen anyway.
- I now have two user information bars and two device locks on my today screen. I know I can remove them both but dang…department of redundancy department anyone?
- switching between applications has slowed down to a crawl including the touch screen freezing for aprox 10-20 seconds each time I move between tabs and closing apps.
And to top it all off my incoming calls started being diverted right to my mail box. No ringing.
Had to nuke the bbconnect software and even that didn’t resolve the incoming calls problem and had to do a hard reset on the phone
I’m thinking I will kill the whole bbconnect package and save myself some coin as everywhere I go I have access to some wifi network anyway.
Sorry for the rant but am I missing the big picture here? Is there more to the blackberry connect service.
BTW I'm on a Rogers branded HTC TyTn with no modifications
BBC4 does make the PDA slower and does replace the original device lock by its own (which is terribly bad). Aside of that it works like a charm.

So it lookes you have to choose from 2 bad solutions....
- Remove the software
- Have bad performance
Isn't there another app which makes it possible to connect?
Thx all!
True, true. It is quite a load for the Tytn but at least I don't see that my device gets unstable.
I hope you know that you can disable the BB device lock? Just use Memmaid and disable BB's startup service.
But consider: you won't be loved by your company's sysadmin if you tell him that, and it is indeed a security loss. But you can replace it with a better locking software then.
Cheers

Oh Sh!!T... I just changed the bbsecurity service to manual from automatic, now I cannot get back into my TyTn... does anyone have a quick fix other than HR... I've tried SR several times, but that didn't work... I can connect via ActiveSync, I just need to start the BBSecurity service, then I can input my password (theoretically anyways) and should be fine... I used Memmaid to make this change... Just another example of using advanced tools without knowing the ramifications....
I guess i should have asked for more clarification first...

Hi, I experienced the same once. I am afraid, there is no way out but HR...
You should stop the service, not delete or manual start. I.e. after each SR you will be asked for the BB password, but once stopped, it won't ask again (till you SR).
other srvices
I use mail2web's free services and it works great and you cant beat the price and there is not that big of a deal with a delay of a few minuts or less and it is push hope this helps after HR
I just use bbconnect 2.x
works fine without those annoying 2 points you mentioned
in my experience, if your company only supports BES, then it is best to carry a blackberry device. the only way around this is if your email admin would be willing to set up a forwarder for your account. using a service like mail2web is ok, but only if you can get that exchange / groupwise forwarder set up.

No Data Access after running Registry Wizard

Hi everyone,
Apologies if this is covered somewhere and I've missed it, but I'm in a bit of a pickle here.
After running Registry Wizard for the first time, I suddenly have no Data Access. I didn't change anything to do with the GPRS network, but I'm getting the "Cannot connect with current connection settings" error. Upon checking the Comm Manager, the Data Access icon isn't even an option.
I'm running an MDA G3 with the latest official update from T-Mobile's website. I've been thinking about going to WM6 and if a hard reset is required, I might as well.
Thanks in advance and sorry if this is an RTFM question.
Jason
same issue here and no data access after wm6 upgrade. I have been traveling across country and they told me i had the wrong plan (t zones) made some backend change and it works.. however with registry wizard i restored after using it and it worked fine - it DEFINITELY does something with the latest tmo rom that kills data access, unfortunately i was in a crunch and had no time ti figure out what that was - turning everthing off didn't repair it either - i ended up having to reset.
Problems
my settings were working fine, then I made some changes yesterday and no data access, tried everything, numerous soft resets, then 2 hard resets, eventually I did no reinstall Registry Wizard and everything is fine.
Well, I ended up needing a refresh from T-Mobile. It's working fine now. The tech I talked to was super cool. She said they were NOT going to update the MDA to WM6 and that she had "already done it herself" a few weeks ago.
So, at least I didn't have to hide anything.
Speaking of, where in WM6 do I need to enter the data for the MMS server?

Telstra HTC HD2

Firstly I am new to this site so hopefully I am going about this the right way.
I am just wanting to inform people of an issue with the Telstra HTC HD2, I purchased just over a week ago and had trouble getting the phone to sync with my office server. After numerous attempts I contact HTC and they took me through the process to discover the phone would not hold one of the settings which is in active sync under configure server advanced settings. The connection setting show dedicated and they told me to change to internet, but the phone won't save the setting, it keeps reverting back to dedicated or goes blank. They advised the phone was faulty and to take it back to the Telsta shop, I did this and after trying 3 different phones we discovered they all have the same problem. The Telstra shop contacted HTC and were advised by the tech team that they where aware of the problem. Would have been handy if they had advised their online support people, it would have saved me a lot of wasted time. So now for all you people out there with a Telstra HTC HD2 phone we need to wait for HTC to provide a fix.
Aside from this so far I am very happy with the phone after just upgrading from the original HTC Diamond.
I have a Telstra HD2 sync'd with my Exchange server via Exchange Server ActiveSync, and I haven't experienced this problem you describe.
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM -- getting rid of the crud that's on there by default?
Yup - youll fix it in 2 secs by going with any custom rom.
Thanks for the feed back. Phone still has the standard telstra rom, only had it a week, how do I locate to best rom to use and does this affect my warranty?
Thanks in advance.
To load a custom ROM you will need to HSPL or Goldcard...
By by warranty!
Thanks cheetah2k,
I am pretty green when it comes to this stuff, so I have no idea what HSPL or Goldcard is. Look forward to your assistance.
i am new to this also but i could only stand the telstra crap for 2 days.
after a bit of reading i gave it a try and it's pretty easy, read through this thread.
looks like i can't post links (even from this forum).
go to "HD2 ROM DEVELOPMENT" and click on the second sticky flashing for noobs.
HI chicksloveit, I tried sending you a message but I don't think its working. Did you receive?
Hi test7875, also tried sending you a message but not sure its working. Perhaps something to do with settings or security etc.
Which rom would you recommend flashing too? I see there is a selection at hotfile.com/list/255376/99cdb1c
Was wondering if it is possible to get the original telstra rom in case I need to flash back for warranty.
Fix without changing ROM
I had similar problem but mine is working perfectly now, without using a custom ROM.
see this thread; SOLvit's reply worked for me;

Thanks rravenshak,
Actually my phone syncs with exchange server via direct push, but won't sync with server when contected to my PC via active sync. HTC suggested changing the setting to internet, as quoted in last entry by SOLVit in the link you suggested, but it won't retain the setting when saved. HTC have confirmed this is an issue, it is interesting that SOLVit says it works
sorry Niffty,
mis-read/understood your OP.
No worries thanks anyway.
Have you tried any cooked roms, if so which ones?
yeah Niffty2010 got it also replied back.
Telstra too told me to set the selection to Dedicated but each time I do, it reverts to a blank. What concerns me is that I am not getting instant emails (even though I have Activesync set to notify as email arrives on the work Exchange Server). The delays can be up to 15 minutes (and the best time is around 5 minutes!). I wonder if the Telstra "Dedicated" channel is too slow? Scared to play around with different ROMS and then get a huge bill from Telstra because my email was not going through their approved route (I am on the Email Pack which is $20 for all email through Outlook).
Hi tangiers, would be nice if HTC and Telstra were consistent with the information they provide. As I mentioned HTC told me to set to internet, but the setting won't save it goes back to dedicated. Having said this my email push is sychronizing with the server fine through 3G and appears to be almost instant when I compare with my desktop. My problem is I can't get a connection to the server using a USB cable connected to my desktop, you could ask why worry about connecting through the USB cable and desktop. With our server we also use public folders and microsoft in all there wisdow does not have active sync syncronising with public folders, so I use pocket mirror and this needs to be done through active sync on my desktop.
If you want to try dedicated, try to save on internet and it always reverts to dedicated when saved, well this is what happens on my HD2. Otherwise we have to wait for HTC to provide an update. I haven't gone down the road of using another rom, although I have done a few mods I found helpful. Have done all update available from HTC, plus unlocked telstra quick links so they can be removed, search this forum for the CAB. Also installed BSB tweaks, need net frame work 3.5 for this to work. As the phone is only a couple of weeks old this makes it more user friendly without loading a different rom. I will see what rom updates HTC provide before try others.
I spoke to Telstra again. They see it must be a setting on the Exchange server that is wrong. Couldn''t tell me which though. When I asked if they could tell me the settings for Activesync (APN etc) if I flashed my ROM with an official HTC Rom upgrade they said that my warranty would be void and the representative told me he hadn't been told the settings (!) I also phoned HTC who could only tell me to choose "When items arrive" in the ActiveSync settings on the phone (!). I will have to now try our Server administrators to see what they can do. Perhaps the fact that yours is coming through instantly points to a problem with our server set up. Would be nice to know what to tell them to change though...
I think I have found the cause for the delay in receiving my email from the Exchange Server through Activesync. If I check Status under ActiveSync on the HD2, I notice that it does an update every 8 minutes which is the minimum heartbeat interval for ActiveSync. My theory is that the phone thinks it is holding the connection to the server during the interval but the firewall settings of the server are not allowing the TCP connection to remain open for the 8 minute interval. Accordingly, having received no response from the server, the phone sends the next heartbeat but notices when it does that there are new emails and downloads them. There is an article from MS about ensuring that the firewall settings allow connections to remain open as long as the Exchange server does.
This could be the case for you, but I don't know enough about it. As mentioned mine is instant just won't connect to server through USB cable. Very time consuming things computers and phones. Why can't they just work.
I fixed the problem. I was using an owa.{domain}.com address for the server in Outlook on the phone. This address worked fine except for the emails only coming through every eight minutes. I changed the address by adding "/exchange" to the address and emails started coming through instantly, as push mail should. But it was shortlived. The phone kept chopping the "/exchange" part of the address and going back to the old problem. I then deleted the Outlook account and established the Excahnge partnership through the Mobile Device Centre with the phone connect via USB to a computer ON THE WORK DOMAIN. Before I set up the phone OTA / through a pc at home. This doesn't work. I think it has something to do with Exchange trusting a device that connects with USB to a PC in the work network rather than outside through the internet. All is working. No thanks to TELSTRA, HTC or the IT Department!!!!!
