Ok my brain is about to explode…Does the bbconnect service do anything other than the push mail? I know this sound like a stupid question but bear with me.
I installed 4_1_.0.0.67 on my tytn and all hell broke out
- The blackberry software has hijacked the security login screen I had set up originally from my numeric touch login screen to a goggle-like field for which I have to either open up the keyboard or use the useless onscreen keyboard. If I shut down the security from the ‘blackberry security’ icon and go back to the tytn installed ‘lock’ icon it takes me back the 'blackberry security' screen anyway.
- I now have two user information bars and two device locks on my today screen. I know I can remove them both but dang…department of redundancy department anyone?
- switching between applications has slowed down to a crawl including the touch screen freezing for aprox 10-20 seconds each time I move between tabs and closing apps.
And to top it all off my incoming calls started being diverted right to my mail box. No ringing.
Had to nuke the bbconnect software and even that didn’t resolve the incoming calls problem and had to do a hard reset on the phone
I’m thinking I will kill the whole bbconnect package and save myself some coin as everywhere I go I have access to some wifi network anyway.
Sorry for the rant but am I missing the big picture here? Is there more to the blackberry connect service.
BTW I'm on a Rogers branded HTC TyTn with no modifications
BBC4 does make the PDA slower and does replace the original device lock by its own (which is terribly bad). Aside of that it works like a charm.

So it lookes you have to choose from 2 bad solutions....
- Remove the software
- Have bad performance
Isn't there another app which makes it possible to connect?
Thx all!
True, true. It is quite a load for the Tytn but at least I don't see that my device gets unstable.
I hope you know that you can disable the BB device lock? Just use Memmaid and disable BB's startup service.
But consider: you won't be loved by your company's sysadmin if you tell him that, and it is indeed a security loss. But you can replace it with a better locking software then.
Cheers

Oh Sh!!T... I just changed the bbsecurity service to manual from automatic, now I cannot get back into my TyTn... does anyone have a quick fix other than HR... I've tried SR several times, but that didn't work... I can connect via ActiveSync, I just need to start the BBSecurity service, then I can input my password (theoretically anyways) and should be fine... I used Memmaid to make this change... Just another example of using advanced tools without knowing the ramifications....
I guess i should have asked for more clarification first...

Hi, I experienced the same once. I am afraid, there is no way out but HR...
You should stop the service, not delete or manual start. I.e. after each SR you will be asked for the BB password, but once stopped, it won't ask again (till you SR).
other srvices
I use mail2web's free services and it works great and you cant beat the price and there is not that big of a deal with a delay of a few minuts or less and it is push hope this helps after HR
I just use bbconnect 2.x
works fine without those annoying 2 points you mentioned
in my experience, if your company only supports BES, then it is best to carry a blackberry device. the only way around this is if your email admin would be willing to set up a forwarder for your account. using a service like mail2web is ok, but only if you can get that exchange / groupwise forwarder set up.

I have a JasJar and when I switch sims the mailboxes keep disappearing. I still see them in the TODAY screen but when I try to select them they are nowhere to be found. I also try to manually go to messaging but they are missing from there too. I keep creating new boxes and they are starting to number up Yahoo1, Yahoo2 etc.
Help Me.
Thanks.
Yeah i have experienced the same thing, whats seems to work for me is making sure you close down all apps before a soft reset or sim card change, go to start settings system memory running program list and stop all
This works for me every time now and i no longer have to set up my mail accounts
All you need to do is to turn off your device off for a while (a couple of seconds will do) before you reset.
It's because WM5 caches data to speed up the device a bit, and if you reset your device before it gets a chance to permanently write the data, it gets lost.
Best thing is to shut off before you do a reset, in case you lose data.
Well I sent mine to service, switched the mainboard and i can soft reset at anytime now, never looses any data any more.
Same Rom and config but the problem is completly gone

Which Universal device did you have exactly?
I have a Qtek 9000 that seems to be forgetting its authentications and I can't figure it out. Nothing else seems to be wrong with it which leads me to think it HAS to be a software issue, but I can't pin it down!
The only weird things I'm experiencing: Bluetooth devices lose pairing (device redetects them and asks for PIN), Wi-Fi access points get wiped clean (get prompted for WPA keys), and infrequently the Exchange Server password in ActiveSync and the GPRS login information to Cingular are asked even when "Save password" is set.
Qtek 9000 from Dangaard Norway
Min wiped Email settings, Wlan, and some GPRS settings
Don't know about BT, dident use it before i sent it back.
Thanks Bosjo, I was beginning to think I was the only one, or that it was a software issue.
I believe it's related to the fact that the IMEI temporarily disappears from the phone, so it loses authentication of itself and therefore the devices or credentials its encrypted with.
I posted full details here http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=797931 and will likely be shipping it back to the supplier tomorrow for replacement.
That's true, I totally forgot about the Imei disapering.
It also failed to display the radio version.
I know for sure that they actually switched the mainboard cause I have a different MAC adress, haven't checked the Imei number though.
It's a bit funny that this is a hardware error, one would think that it should forgett all settings then and not just pieces off it
Got the same problem. Im seeing my mail account on the today screen but can't access it, if i search for the e-mail's i can find them but can't access them. Hi,
Just got an MDA-Pro, and found the following PIE irritations, does anyone have any solutions:
- When I run PIE, I always get a box saying "You are about to go online..." and have to accept. As I've an unlimited data SIM I just want to go online. Anyone know how to get rid of the box?
- Although I configure my PIE homepage as something useful (ie. Yellow Pages), when I always get a T-Mobile page. I don't want my MNO to keep burning my bytes with this, how do I get rid of?
- When I connection to Exchange OMA, I authenticate OK and get the Home page, but when I tap "Inbox" (or whatever), the link won't display, and PIE reports it's as a result of "security settings". This works fine however from my PC and cellphone so it's not my Exchange server.
Appreciate all you know.
br
I agree - very annoying! I have the same problem on my MDA Vario. If I hard-reset and skip the T-mobile customizations, I can avoid this - but it's not really a solution. It's really bugging me now because I've installed Spb Pocket Plus so I can have multiple browser windows. When you open a link 'in a new window', instead of getting the URL you chose, you get the T-mobile pop-up and it automatically takes you to their home page. Pretty outrageous presumption, really.
I've sussed it! Delete this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\PIEPlug
Ta da!
Thanks! Just tried it and now I have a spam free PIE - nice one.
Hi bosseye,
I am very interested in your unlimited data SIM. How much does it cost per month and is it still available?
Also, if you are using Exchange, why not just set Active Sync to Sync with Exchange, which is what I have done? Then you won't use PIE for email, jsut for browsing. 8)
Hi Melty,
The T-Mobile SIM is in fact their TM Communication Centre which is an unlimited 3G/GPRS SIM (1GB fair usage) and integrated WiFi/3G/GPRS PCMCIA card through their business sales group and currently on offer at £45.96 per month. It also includes 5000 mins per month Hotspot access (both T-Mobile and BT-Openzone). In short, it's exactly what I needed as I'm more data centric than voice. And its a winner if your laptop hasn't got WiFi too (although mine has).
I currently switch this SIM between my MDA Pro and PC as required, simply because the MDA Pro is truly woeful as a voice device (I won't rant further!), so the Web'n'walk SIM that I got with the MDA Pro is now in a Nokia handset for my voice calls. I'll shortly experiment with the MDA Pro as a 3G modem for the PC over Bluetooth to save moving the SIM.
In respect of Exchange, I do indeed use the MDA Pro to activesync to Exchange over 3G/GPRS, and this is where the 3G of the MDA Pro really scores (it rather becomes a laptop replacement some days of the week). It is an awesome data device once you're not bothered about data volumes, so FTP and Telnet become really useful in a systems environment (but I'm struggling with the VPN as Connection Manager befuddles me). It's just strange that it cannot display the OWA pages, not that I'd use it much, but I'd like to understand why not (thereby having a backup if I get messed up with EAS).
What we really need for the MDA Pro is the AKU2 ROM upgrade, that should provide real-time messaging, and hopefully a much needed performance improvement, and stops the damn thing crashing so often. I particularly like the one where it still flashes its little green "GSM" light when it has in fact crashed hours ago and is not receiving either voice or data!!!
Prior to AKU2/MSFP, I have experimented with Scheduled Sync over-the-air to Exchange, but this seems unreliable. Perhaps its OK if there's always a network when it tries to connect, but gets upset when there's not. Would be interested in any tweaks to it error handling in this respect, or indeed some hints on VPN.
Hope this helps.
I'm experimenting with push mail on my Cingular 8525. I'm not in an HSDPA area. I'm connected with either GPRS or EDGE (I haven't changed the registry to show me which).
I find that I can be connected for hours at a time: the "G" icon will appear in the signal strength area, and clicking on it will indicate the number of minutes/hours connected. The connection timer will still be ticking away happily but if I try to access a web page the prompt will indicate "Locating" until it eventually times out. Even though the phone says I'm connected the connection isn't in fact useable. What I end up having to do is Disconnect from the network and then I let a page request from PIE initiate a reconnection.
Obviously, for push email this is no good. I need a connection that stays up. I even have my push email client set to poll for new messages every thirty minutes, but because the phone says the connection is up, those poll requests will just time out when the connection is actually not up.
What is the deal with this? It would be 10000 times better if the connection just dropped properly if it is supposed to (timing out, network congestion, or whatever). Because then the push email client's poll schedule could at least re-initiate the connection every thirty minutes.
I have been considering trying GPRS Keep Alive (which pings up to 5 hosts to keep a connection alive) but I'm wondering why this happens in the first place? Why doesn't the connection just drop instead of hanging there?
I have been having the same issue with a Treo 750 and with my newly acquired 8525. The connection manager says I'm connected by I don't getting any mail pushed to the device. This has been going on for the last two weeks. The only way I can find to correct it is by a soft reset.
Soft reset? That's pretty extreme. I just have to disconnect and reconnect.
Why is that extreme?
Actually it's quite easy. Since I use push Active Sync automatically initiates a new connection at start up.
I think it's extreme because you shouldn't have to do that. All you should have to do is disconnect and reconnect. Of course, none of this should be happening in the first place.
So I installed GPRS Keep Alive last night. I guess that was a waste of $5 since this morning I see it didn't help. In fact, now I think I'm going to have to soft reset (!) as disconnecting/reconnecting doesn't seem to make a difference.
Since you're having problems on a Treo as well I would guess it must be a Windows thing. Are you on Cingular too?
Yep. I'm with Cingular.
I believe it's a Cingular issue.
I had a Treo 700wx with Sprint before these and never had the issue.
I installed HTweakC this morning and turned on GPRS Auto Attach and "Set Connection AlwaysOn." The first option attempts to connect to GPRS as soon as you turn the phone on. The second is supposed to (I think) stop GPRS from disconnecting.
Still I eventually lose the connection. So a $500 PPC device just can't do what a $200 BlackBerry can??
I'm surprised that no one else has posted to this thread. Maintaining a data connection is one of the most-basic requirements for a wireless device. Yet the Hermes/TyTn/8525/Dopod (whatever you want to call it) can't do this. And I guess, then, the same goes for the Treo?
I suppose this is why, in the end, a much less flexible platform like the overpriced iPhone will quickly succeed: you can be sure that Apple will make 1000% sure the phone can be used with wireless data...since that is the whole point. You know, just to remind the people up in Redmond.
Hi
Just to let you know that I am on Tmobile in the UK and I have the same issues. The data connection under WM5 was a bit more reliable but is hopeless under WM6. It caused me to downgrade from 6 back to the HTC test rom (WM5) just to get push mail working at all, but its not very reliable.
I agree that this is the most fundamental aspect of these WM devices and until it works reliably, everything else is a bit pointless.
I just hope that soeone can get to grips and solve this in the XDA live rom as I really like the new apps, but frankly I would give all that up for a reliable push and acticesync solution.
Rob
Hrmmm. So I guess this means that anyone with Good or BlackBerry push email service on these things (or any WM5/WM6 device) must experience the same problem.
I wonder if this app would help you?
http://commmgrpro.com/index.html
it's not out yet, but the developer is asking for beta testers.
Maybe if the connection is actually terminated rather than going off because it times out, the next connection will be good. Worth a try anyway I would think.

Has anyone tested this app?
Hi,
I'm using a Magician with WM2003
I have a GPRS connection setup for with t-mobile using a proxy.
If I'm not connected it works great- I press send/receive for my e-mail it connects and gets my messages just fine.
If I do it again 5 minutes later also fine.
The problem is after a long time the connection is still active, but when I go to do a Send/Receive-
I get an "unable to connect to the incoming mail server" message. All my other internet apps also will not work. If I turn on flight mode and then turn it off (to disconnect from my GPRS connection) and then try the internet again- it will work fine.
I think what triggers this is going into an area with no service. The GPRS connection stays active- and when I try to use it (even when I'm back in an area with service) it won't work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Daniel
I found this, may help ....
Look for "KeepAliveTime" on the right side of this page

It may help, good luck!
I have this same issue with the htc touch. Not sure what to do about it. I see the keepalivetime but it isn't a hack or a reg edit (that I can tell).

Exactly the same here - issues with push mail and when using messenger have to turn flight mode on and off to reconnect to the service - only been like this for few weeks now - never used to be a problem before
So it looks like T-mob have changed something recently. I have been searching various forums trying to find an answer but no luck. TMob reckon nothing has changed when i called them.
I too have the same problem and I am also on t-mob UK.
I will call Tmob again tomorrow and hopefully get through to someone in their tech dept. I knew it had to be Tmob, I had changed nothing on my handset, but they refused to acknowledge that anyone else had a problem.
I use cingular/att with these issues so it's not just tmobile.

You are not alone here....... nearly every day a soft reset
Also the same with my trinity - but not so often
Having spoken to T-Mob UK, the general thinking is they are imposed restrictions on usage for the basic walk and web service. This includes IMessenger and push e-mail (I knew about IM bit not Push Mail!)
The engineer seems to think the connection will be frozen if the network detects
a IM service (the heatbeat of push mail mail looks to be included in this).
Solution: Upgrade to Walk and Web Plus (extra £5) per month.
I have been given a free month to try and see if this solves my issues. I will let you know how it goes.
Now this could be T-mob fobbing me off and trying to get an extra five quid off me, lets wait and see. Any of you guys on the plus service already??
I was guessing that might be the case, let know how it goes if I need to upgrade
I use the mediamax bundle with cingular/att. I wonder if this is indeed the case. I would need to upgrade to the pda plan, which would be pricey. Mabey that's the case?
Well, I'm afraid it was a nice story that Tmob told me, but it hasn't sorted the problem! I will keep an eye on it over the next few days just in case it takes a few days to set their end, but as of today I still loose connection.
OK, finally got it sorted....! I have GPRS connected all the time now without loosing connection.
Looks like T-mob were telling me the truth. After talking to a T-mobile engineer, he confirms that they now have the network infrastructure to detect and block services that are not covered in certain WnW packages. This went live just over a month ago.
The basic WnW package does not allow Push Email & IM, if detected the network will block your IP. Turning off and on the radio will give you a new IP, so will work again until detected.
For Push Email you will need the WnW plus service. Now the interesting part is if you add on the plus service (a bolt on) it will still not work. You will need to add the package onto your contract not as a bolt on.
Many people have just paid extra for the bolt on but the T-Mob system doesnt recognise this and still blocks Push Mail & IM.
It doesnt cost any extra or change your contract length, its just a different way the customer service people upgrade your account.
Unfortunately the customer service rep that upgraded my account did not know this, but the engineer new straight away.
Hope this helps people.
Thanks for the info.....I use ATT/Cingular. What are the odds they started this same thing a month ago? I've been noticing this problem for about that length of time.
Hi all!
It´s the same for me
I´m using Eplus with Cortado email push in Germany
Every morning a soft reset
Any solutions possible within the registry
Greetings
Gregor
The company I work for recently (3 months ago) bought 3 ATT 8525's for people who travel. All 3 of the phones have this issue where when they go into their power save mode, and they will not send or receive Email or produce notifications about new email. It appears to me that when the phones go into this power save mode they turn off the wireless card in the phone. I have made every effort to figure this out myself but I finally broke down and called ATT who then transfered me to HTC. HTC told me that this is a bug in the phone and that they do not have a solution for it other than trying Windows Mobile 6. However, since ATT has not released WM6 for the 8525, and I don't feel like bricking a phone, the company decided to go ahead and buy the ATT 8925, hopping that the new phone wouldn't have this problem. Unfortunately it dose.
So getting down to my question. Does anyone know how to get these phones to send and receive Email, through WIFI and not the cell network, when they are in their power save mode?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Oh and BTW, after toying around with the 8925 I do have to say that the new features included in the phone are quite nice, hate the chrome though.
Thanks
Via WiFi? No. You wouldn't like the battery life if it did.
Battery life
I don't really care about that right now. I'm just looking for a solution to the problem i am currently having.

you need to disable the at&t proxie to use wifi to send mail/etc
To have the wifi alwayz on even in standby is not wise, you batter will die fast ......
I have no issues using Active sync with exchange 2007 i get emails even when in power save maybe you should get some exchange accounts

You don't understand the gravity of what he told you. The battery life would literally be 2-3 hours.
Manually pressing the power button and tapping 'check for new messages' is a much better solution than being completely unable to access email for 3/4 of the workday because the battery has died.
Think about it.
Also, on your install CD, you'll find some AT&T software to push email to the phone automatically, waking up the phone using SMS. And, as other people have suggested, these phones were designed with Microsoft Exchange in mind and setting up an Exchange server would also help your problem.
Thank you for the replies.
Dose the "push" feature work with non exchange email servers. The only reason I ask is because we don't have an exchange server.

I took a look at this and it seems to describe the problem i have very well. In regards to the battery life, is there a way to have the WIFI turn on when its time to check mail and then turn off after its finished? I would really like these phones to be using WIFI most of the time even though we have an unlimited data plan, WIFI just seems to be faster.

ringy2 thank you. I'll take a look at that.
You know I have been working off of the thread linked above and I have gotten the phone to the point where it seems to be checking our mail server over GPRS/3G (I have turned the WIFI antenna off). The problem now is that the when it goes to check messages it won't DL any new ones that may be on the server. Any ideas?
Do you not have unlimited data with at&t? If you do then there is absolutely no reason not to leave wifi off and just use that for email. As for checking emails and not getting anything new. You need to adjust the settings for your account.
surrept, Yes we have an unlimited data plan and at this point i have given up on getting the phone to check via WIFI. As for the settings, what are you refering to? I have the account setup and i have configured it exactly how it is supposed to be. i have it DLing full copies of messages w/ no attachments, and it is set to check mail every 5 min (will change this back to 15 once i have finished testing).
Um, BTW - AT&T did release WM6 for the 8525... VERY much worth it. However, I'm still going for a 8925 for the doubled RAM/ROM & GPS...
I highly doubt that. Again i have looked in every deep dark place that the internet has and haven't found any WM6 ROM that I can DL from ATT site. you are probably referring to the "official" ATT ROM that i have seen floating around. Im not going to put that on these phones because, one I work for a descent size company and I don't want to be breaking any law and such on there behalf. Two I don't feel like bricking any of these phones. I want the warranty to be valid on them. If it was my personal phone i might try it. but since these are the companies phones it ain't gonna happen.
