hi all, im new to the site and to my wizard (got it last month). I bought it from a friend of mine who hasnt paid his bill in a while....well, i stuck my prepaid sim in it and... well to my amazment i got full blown internet for free (using it to make this post)... not to mention use it as a (albiet slow) modem for my pc......hmm.
so, found this website, overclocked my wizard (thanks to omapclock/plus) among other stuff and then looked for a post about this but found old stuff from 2004 so I was just wondering if this was common knowledge or am i the first person with a p/p wizard.
ps. i love this phone
kiss my @$$ razr
are you sure, you are not connected to WLAN?
I have a Wizzard (k-Jam) on Prepaid and I do not get free internet, that has nothing to do with the phone, its purely to do with your network provider, and good luck finding cheap, let alone free, gprs in australia
I got my T-mobile MDA sometimes last year... cancelled my t-mobile contract n got a prepaid SIMcard(T-mobile)... hadn't put a penny(re-fill) since Oct. 2006 n data works just fine(EDGE), i was surprised... I really feel sorry for T-Mobile, only if they knew :-D. I connect my Pc too using my Wizard (Internet Share)... can't remember last time i used WIFI coz all the hotspot connections are locked/secured where i live, had to go for walk to get the unlocked ones :-D.... Oh and there was a time i could send text too on my phone when my prepaid SIMcard was out of funds, i had to resend texts 6 times though blah blah blah... Anyway, i feel really sorry for those people with Data plan on their phone ... (T-Mobile Data plan $29.99)Ouchhh. And i hear some other wireless networks charge more, so sad.
First to post i think
i posted this on Jan 5, i also tought that i was the first to notice but someone in Howardforums posted this in there. i think i posted this first and then two other people too and welcome to the forums but i posted this in the general forums not in the wizard forums
U might be the first one to posted it... but other people have figured it out way long before u posted it... :-D. Personally i've been using the free internet since Oct. last year.
wow!!! can someone PM me the details on how to get the free internet. I reside in canada as well.
Frankly, i find this very hard to believe, but still i think it's caused by the bad management of the network.
This happened to me few months ago :
Me: Hello, i would like to activate the 12MB/month data plan
Provider: Of course, please tell me what phone you're using
Me: (After half an hour trying to explain that i don't have a Nokia)It's a PDA, manufactered by HTC.
Provider: Let me check....music for 30sec-1min...I checked and it seems that your device is not compatible with our services.
Me: Ha ? That is not possible, please tell me the settings (apn and such) so i can connect to the internet.
Provider: What nokia model you said you have ?
Me:(already tearing my hear) What devices you know that they are compatible ?
Provider: SonyErricsson...nokia....so on
Me: Well, i have a...ehm..Sony.(one that she said it's working...yeah it was a she)
Provider: Ok, i will send you the settings on mail.
Bottom line :
All the darn settings i waited over an hour for were these :
apn=internet
i wouldn't overclock over 260 btw. but if no problems good for you. some have messed up there phone that way. all white screen, lines, reboots. gl

i am recently deciding whether to part with my cash and buy a xda 2. First of all are they worth it? Also would i be able to use a pay as you go sim card from a samsung v200? which does have gprs as it has o2 active i was just wondering as i do not really want to go to a pay monthly plan
thnaks in advance
How much you paying for it? It will work with the sim you have as long as its an O2 phone, if not you can unlock it for free.
it will probably be £270 unlocked and yes i have a o2 sim card
You won't be able to take advantage of the full internet GPRS, I had no end of trouble trying to connect to MSN and websites outside of 02 active, even after numerous phone calls to 02, they never got this sorted out.
As far as I know, on a pay as you go simcard, you cannot benefit from full internet access with o2.
ye but is'nt there a way of changing the setting or something i heard you can do that to make it go on the internet
well can you plzz tell me so i can decide whether to get one
I have a PAYG vodafone in my xda2. Ive only just got the phone and still havent worked out how to get internet access on it. I downloaded vodafone's 'connect me' software and that buggered my actviesync connection so i had to uninstall it....
I would like to say that yes this is very possible.
I had my old XDA I and XDA II on pay and go with O2 I had full internet and full GPRS though it took alot of time to get the settings but I managed it. the only annoying this is when you send a text it tells you your credit about 5 times. I have now got the XDA IIi and the sim also works with this.
conclusion is that yes it can be done and its not hard either. just change the ISP and work connection
cheers can to share the setting for the xda 2 if you know them as if i get one i might need them trying to get my parents to pay half for my birthday present lol
I paid USD $600 for O2 XDA II 2 months ago.
But it's worth.
I'm using it in programming Pocketpc application, capture Discovery from my PC then copy it to my SD 512 MB and view in PocketPC when go to sleep, listen MP3s, use softwares...
It's a nice XDA man !

There used to be a way, by changing the Proxy settings, but this does not work for newer SIM's.
O2 PAYG SIM's less than 18 months old (I think) can only access WAP via GPRS.
Cost: Expect to pay £200-£250 for a good condition XDA II on Ebay (just got £235 for mine, but some have gone for as little as £180)
well my sim card is from a samsung v200 which was brought new about november 2003 which has gprs on it, but now am not sure although i suppose if it does not work i should be able to pick on up easily from a store somewhere
Anyone have the Voda settings for GPRS/MMS? I'm on O2 and the reception around here is hit and miss, but Voda is always spot-on. I've a PAYG card that's data-enabled, I just need the settings for the XDAII.
Hey,
My friend's phone has (free) Internet access. I doubt it's free but I know she doesn't have a data plan, and she claims she isn't getting any usage charges for accessing the Internet. She's had Cingular for a few years now. Do they offer pay-as-you-use Internet?
Anyway, I'm wondering if I could somehow establish a connection with her phone and then access the Internet. Possibly Bluetooth? I'm using the Wing (HTC Herald).
Generally phones that have BT can function as BT modem. The paring on your side should be pretty straight forward but setting up your friends phone (not a WM device right?) depends on its model.
Yeah I posted the message because I couldn't get it working. I thought I had everything set up correctly on my phone. I probably... I just have to set hers up correctly. She has a Nokia N75 - http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=products,n75
Anyone have any experience with this?
Cingular does have pay as you go, it is very expensive like 1.5cents per k. This ads up in an awful hurry. If this is a new account for your friend, you should check online and see if she is racking up data usage. If so add a data plan before the billing cycle ends. Can be done through cs and they will make it retroactive.
N75 should work as a modem with the HTC Wing without a problem.
I rarely come up to see a data plan in US that have unlimited data access btw
Oh also btw, theres a simpler solution to just insert your friend's sim card into your T-mobile Wing (as long as its unlocked ). Cingular and T-mobile both use GSM anywayz (not like Sprint or Verizon using CDMA).
Help!
I've got an unlocked G1 bought off eBay in early December. Up until today it's been working without any problems. However at 11am today it dropped off the O2 network and I can't get voice / text. I still have data access though.
Here's what I've tried:
1. My SIM in another phone - fine
2. Other SIMs in my G1 - no network registration except for a TMobile SIM.
3. Soft reset of G1
4. Hard reset of G1.
5. Wipe and reflash using update.zip method off microSD card to UK RC8 - no difference.
I'm desperate here - got multiple important calls pending over the next few days..
If I use "Search Networks" and manually select O2, I get the message "Your sim card does not allow a connection to this network".
"Registering automatically" also fails (but silently).
How can I get my G1 up and running ??
Try getting a new sim card from O2?
Currently using my SIM in another phone without issue (on the same cell tower too).

Nope - it literally dropped off the network after being in use with no problems after a month.
Can connect to o2 data channels, just no voice / text. Connects to voice with T-Mobile SIM only.
I've redone the settings 1/2 a dozen times as part of the whole wipe / re-flash circle of life thing...
Given up now - will test with PAYG TMobile and sell on eBay for parts / working. Can't be dealing with it for now but will return to Android when it's a little maturer and my contract's due.
I'm having the exact same problem. Anyone ever find a solution? I phoned T-Mobile and they told me to type in something involving the PUK code, but I didn't think it'd do anything.
I typed it in, and it's just stuck now. Saying unblocked, now unlocking.
Anyone help?

I've got a pay as you go T Mobile SIM in mine now. Registers with nework ok but won't make / receive phone calls / messages..
Going through the mill with T Mobile support in the hope they've seen this before..
Hey,
I'm from Germany and wanted to complete an O2 contract and use it with my G1.
But before I make the contract I used an O2-prepaid card (O2 loop). Im connected to the next O2 cell and calling works great. (running ADP1 JF 1.31 fw)
The cell-tower are not the same as t-mobile and vodafone and the active O2-cell is changing very often.
I hope O2 contract will work, because it's the cheapest kind of data plan.

i had the same problem with my touch hd,also brought from ebay as it was unlocked.used it and worked well for 3 weeks then wouldnt make calls but would connect to the internet.after weeks of trying i found out from my network provider that the phone is blocked ie reported stolen.so the person who sold it me had done an insurance scam.he diidnt get away with it though as i reported him to ebay and the police.and i got a new 1 from my insurance.so im happy now.you should ask your network to check the imei against thier database to see if your phone has been reported as stolen

Looks like you were spot on mate.
Just done a CheckMend report indicating that the IMEI has been blocked on "one or more UK networks".
I've pulled my auction (of course) as I'm an honest seller.
Will have to do some digging as to why - tense email to original seller tonight I think, then maybe the police etc in the morning.

Blocked by T-Mobile at someone else's request.
Paypal - no resolution as > 45 days (nicely timed by seller it seems)
Time for the police *sigh*
Wow! Turns out my phone was blacklisted too! Thanks SOO much! I never would have thought to check to see if it had been reported stolen.
Need to chase up eBay seller now though. Fun.
Well - after hammering away at this for nearly 3 days...
I have a crime reference number!
Which means that PayPal / eBay / T Mobile will need to investigate.
Friendly advice to any others in this situation - I was told initially by the desk officer at my local police station that this was "a civil matter". Thankfully I ignored that and spoke to the local headquarters - they've confirmed that it's a criminal matter and they will be investigating further. So stick to your guns ;-)
Fingers crossed, and good luck to anyone else out there in the same situation.
Apologies for the bump
I apologize for bumping the thread after all this time, but i've had this happen to my G1 just today. After months of flawless use my unlocked G1 suddenly decided to not like any SIMs but a T-Mobile one. Annoyingly IMEI checks show that it's not blacklisted, using both CheckMEND and calling O2 direct and asking them if they have a blacklist flag on it, which they didn't.
I'm wondering if CodeMonkey, or anyone else, managed to get anywhere with a claim or a reason or solution to any of it?
Also, i'm curious as to whether or not we have the same Ebay seller, just to ease paranoia of a scam of some kind going on.
Cheers

This is still with the police *sigh*. Currently chasing down the T-mobile account holder who blocked it originally and the seller. Given up much hope of getting my money back but hoping to take the £350 I'm down by out of the guilty party's hide through the criminal justice system. As far as I can determine, this is either insurance fraud (account holder sells phone for cash, reports as lost and claims off TMobile insurance) or theft & selling stolen goods.. I personally think it's an attempt at insurance fraud by some dimwit as the phone came in it's original packaging with accessories still sealed.
I won't post the seller's name on a public forum in case they're an innocent party, however PM me the details of yours and I'll respond. If it is the same seller I'll update the police appropriately so they can widen the investigation and get in touch with you (if you want to go down that path)..
**EDIT**
Update - compared sellers and they're not the same: watch out if buying on eBay peeps.
I am glad that I found this threat, to learn I am not crazy. Bought a German G1 via ebay, and the first day (wih original FW) everything was fine. At least i think so as I didn't use it much. Then I upgraded manually to latest German RC9 version. While the phone showed to be connected to o2 and internet was working fine, I noticed only one day later that I was not able to make outbound calls or send SMS. Also other o2 customer got error tone (no real message why not reachable) when calling me, SMS didn't arrive. However the most weird thing was that it was possible to call my mobile phone from my fix/land line! Again, for other mobile phones I was not reachable, but land line worked?!
While beeing frustraded I did HW reset and the FW update again, but still same problem. Still in the evening of the same day I left my house, sitting on the airport - and suddenly it worked smoothly. Since that, for a week now, everything works fine.
No, I don't undertand this at all. And I think this was in my case also no issue of being blacklisted as it works now, without doing anything. Letäs hope it does not have a fall back.
G1 Swindle
Hey guys
It looks like I have also been swindled by some chump on ebay and my G1 has been blocked. Has anyone any idea if the phone can be wiped and rebooted in a fashion that clears it from any blocking register?
Otherwise I'm stuck with a very expensive paper weight!!
Hi guys ... got a question ...
I m in Germany at the moment visiting some friends and for that purpose I got my old German o2 pay as you go sim-card out to use for the time that I m here. I m normally on vodafone contract in the Uk.
What happened is, I put the sim card in, working fine - just like it did in the Xperia last Xmas when I was here - however, then I topped up my phone (15 Euro), I sent 2 text messages and made one phone call (2 minutes) and the next morning when I woke up, I had a text message saying that my credit is down to Zero.
So I called o2 to ask them what happend but because this is a sim card that I got from a friend, and which has gone through I dont know how many hands, I couldnt answer their security questions. So they refused to give me any information.
What I did then is, I went online and registered my phone number on the o2 website - this way I get access to my pay as u go bill with a complete breakdown of all charges. However, the charges that took the money from my account are not listed there. Or to be more precise, they are listed there but it doesnt say what they money was taken for.
So for example it will say: 35 minutes - 9.71 Euro - but the two fields that are suppossed to tell you what the charge was for are blank.
So I m not sure what to do now. As I said I didnt have this problem with the Xperia last christmas when I was here. Moreover, although I think that it is impossible for the Xperia to use any internet services as it is pre-configured to vodafone UK, I nevertheless disabled all the data connections in the comm manager including microsoft direct push.
Is there any way that the phone could have connected to the internet using sim card settings or something? I checked under my connections and I ve configrued it to use "My ISP" whenever it wants to connect the internet. This is correct isnt it?
Any ideas what this could be? Since I m not gonna get information from o2 I was hoping somebody on here may be able to help me
Thanks for the time guys
Amano
All i could suggest is installing and "nodata" cab so the xperia cant use and date - search for it in the forum - that seems like the sort of thing it could be - i dont think u can steal from an account or anything though but if it isnt listing the other stuff you are using it could be a problem with o2? i guess u need to ring them too to see whts going on and ask ur friend foir the security info
after carefully monitoring the phone it does seem to be the contract internet that causes the charges which - despite data connections being off - seems to connect somehow anyway.
Now two questions:
1: How can it connect to the internet without the right sim card being in there? The phone is pre-configured to Vodafone UK settings so how can it use contract internet on o2 Germany?
2: There is no way I can be charged for anything in the UK if I havent been using my sim card right? This may seem like a silly question but I dont know I m just worried now that there is some crazy way through which o2 can log in using my vodafone settings and that I m being charged at both ends for the connection (nightmare).
reason I m worried about the latter is that when I click on the connection symbol (the H) at the top of mym screen it says: connected contract internet and it shows u the time it has been connected for - then I have to disable this manually by clicking on cancel - however, I havent had credit on my phone for 2 days now (since I made this post) so how can it be connected to anything? I m really confused
What do u think?

Install no data! clearly it has connected to the German O2 Data Connection! It must have auto configured it or something - install no data and see if that helps
Hey guys, I could really do with some expert knowledge right now from a few points of view.
Country: UK
Phone: HTC Desire Z (stock ROM)
Network: Orange
Basically for a long time now (over a year) Ive been able to connect to a 3G network but not actually use it at all. When im connected to 3G i cannot send or receive text messages, nor can I send or receive phone calls and finally to top it off I cannot browse the web. In short, when im on 3G I have a £400 paperweight. When browsing the web I get the outgoing data arrows lights up, but the incoming never recieves back.
I have tried my sim card in my current Desire Z, an HTC Hero, an Iphone 3G and an LG Viewty with the same result. I have also tried a 3 sim card in my Z and my Hero just to ensure its not the phone at fault which it isnt as I could use 3G fine with a 3 sim.
Over the last 6 months or so Ive had numerous calls to Orange about this matter to no avail. They have told me time and time again to check my APN settings and eventually sent me a replacement sim which produces the same problem. In early december it got passed over to tech support so they would investigate and they rang back a week later telling me they had done something to do with re-registering me on the cell tower (or summit) and contact them if it didnt work, which it hasnt. Ive now been passed onto advanced tech support who have requested I send them my sim card so they could test it out from their end to try and resolve the fault. I posted it off to them today and they said that ill have it back in a few days with any luck.
Can anyone here think of anything that no-one has thought of yet to try as Orange seem to be spending a lot of time guessing and im all out of ideas now. Also where do I stand with the contract? As much as im happy with my contract and not too bothered about staying in it until July I dont see why I shouldnt try to get out of it if they fail to fix the error this time around so does anyone have any idea where I would stand legally? Whilst my phone offers the capability to force the use of GPRS, if it did not have this capability Id be stuck on a contract I literally couldnt use due to 3G refusing to do anything at all, which i have proven to Orange is their error and not mine and they are failing in their attempts to fix it.
Thanks for any info at all,
Paul
