Can I use another phone to connect my phone to the Internet? - Networking

Hey,
My friend's phone has (free) Internet access. I doubt it's free but I know she doesn't have a data plan, and she claims she isn't getting any usage charges for accessing the Internet. She's had Cingular for a few years now. Do they offer pay-as-you-use Internet?
Anyway, I'm wondering if I could somehow establish a connection with her phone and then access the Internet. Possibly Bluetooth? I'm using the Wing (HTC Herald).

Generally phones that have BT can function as BT modem. The paring on your side should be pretty straight forward but setting up your friends phone (not a WM device right?) depends on its model.

Yeah I posted the message because I couldn't get it working. I thought I had everything set up correctly on my phone. I probably... I just have to set hers up correctly. She has a Nokia N75 - http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=products,n75
Anyone have any experience with this?

Cingular does have pay as you go, it is very expensive like 1.5cents per k. This ads up in an awful hurry. If this is a new account for your friend, you should check online and see if she is racking up data usage. If so add a data plan before the billing cycle ends. Can be done through cs and they will make it retroactive.

N75 should work as a modem with the HTC Wing without a problem.
I rarely come up to see a data plan in US that have unlimited data access btw
Oh also btw, theres a simpler solution to just insert your friend's sim card into your T-mobile Wing (as long as its unlocked ). Cingular and T-mobile both use GSM anywayz (not like Sprint or Verizon using CDMA).

HTC TyTN - Replace your blackberry!

I'll admit, I take a lot of good info from these boards and am usually far too busy to post. But this time I feel I have something great to share.
I bought a TyTN the other day...got here Wednesday. I was sick so I didn't start to play much with it until today.
Let me just set the tone here: I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET AROUND MY CORPORATE IT DEPARTMENT FOR YEARS. FIRST I GOT MY SPRINT TREO TO GET BLACKBERRY EMAILS, BUT NOT TRUE PUSH...THEN I GAVE UP FOR A WHILE AND USED A SPRINT 7250...but BB's are A WASTE, LESS FUNCTIONAL, and just a POOR CHOICE for today's mobile professional.
Now I have found today: The HTC TyTN can VERY EASILY be made into a corporate BES-connected Blackberry if you so desire, and conencted to YOUR CURRENT corporate BES account, without their intervention! I have done this with my Sprint 7250 BB account, and done it back and forth all day from T-mo to Cingular (Cingular wins out because of 3G of course...gotta have good slingbox when I can!)
All you need is a 'blackberry enabled SIM card' (really, just add the unlimited BES ENABLED (NOT THE "PERSONAL") blackberry plan to T-mo or Cingular) and a corporate BES account (that you haven't been able to touch for years, LOCKING you to a USELESS paperweight of a dumb-phone!) I know some others were lucky enough to have a Cingular SIM card in their corporate BB already and this wasn't a big deal. But I was not and I see many other are having trouble starting out with with non-Cingular blackberry devices. So check out how I ended up getting my way, finally after 4 years!
0) Insert (or go buy) a personal, non-blackberry-enabled Cingular (3G) SIM card. You should be able to surf for UMTS/HSDPA data and all that...
1) Install BBConnectr_PocketPC_BB_2.1.2.16 on the HTC TyTN.
2) Install Activesync2.1.1.9 for mobile on the desktop.
3) Connect the HTC to the computer via USB, then open PC's Activesync 2.1.1.9. You will be asked if you want to change your PIN -- say YES! (you can always go back. Remember, it DOES NOT MATTER what service your BB is CURRENTLY through...we are going to make it through Cingular for you here in a second!)
4) Call Cingular and have them add the unlimited $49.95 blackberry plan, assumedly on top of your unlimited data plan. While I was willing to pay $145 a month to have everything in one device, just to spite my corporate IT department, here's the catch: They will come back and say you can't have both! Take the Unlimited blackberry plan (which will allow the PocketPC BB Connect software you installed to get through Cingular's network to "blackberry.net" So Instead of $40 for unlimited data, $10 more is getting my (and i have tested it) 3G data and blackberry.net access!
From there, you should be good like me.
I'm still figuring out the nuances, like how to minimize down-time after web surfing for BB connect to get back 'connected' again. I suspect in an all-3G area (in which i am NOT), this may not be an issue.
I have placed the updated, verified as working (on both T-mo and Cingular) versions of Activesync2.1.1.9 and BBConnect_PocketPC_BB_2.1.2.16 in the "upload" directory of the web site. (as well as the 2.1 manual) That is /Hermes/Tools_and_Programs. Hopefully it gets moved over soon.
Keep on rocking everyone -- we are forging new capabilities together that make our lives easier, more fun, and more convenient!
Love and bruises,
Greg
It's your IT group that's at fault btw... I'm the technology guy for our IT group and we're getting rid of the BES and switching to direct push instead. Why? Tell your IT dept this: a BES places a 50% higher IO load on your Exchange server . This is because it must scan all blackberry enabled mailboxes every second or so looking for changes!
Now that devices like the Q have the MSFP, our execs have a nice alternative to their 8700s.
I've also installed LCS 2K5 with an Access Proxy and we are now all moving to Mobile Communicator for IM. This is a great little program that also gateways to AIM and Yahoo.
I believe IT should empower their users with technology, not be a bunch of Nazis.....

Just a quick one on this has anyone tried this on a XDA Exec on orange??

Tytn has more functions, but isn't nearly as good of a phone - especially for someone who spends a lot of time driving

Sorry .. couldn't resist myself.
even though this doesnt belong in this forum i figured you guys would know. do cingular blackberrys (the 8700) work on the new 3g network? and can u install AIM (a version that does not use text messages)?
Just tested TyTN with BIS and BES solutions, all works fine!!!
Messages are coming through UMTS channel where UMTS signal is available!
When you get an email via BES, can you read the attachments though?
does it also wirelessly sync your calendar and contacts with BES?
I seem to have it all working but when I restart the tytn, the blackberry service doesn't connect. The config program says 'no connection' (although it was fine right after I installed) Has anyone else seen this and got round it?
Quick config question on BBConnect...
For all those that have this successfully working on a TyTN - did you have to tweak any connection settings on the PPC ?
I've installed BBConnect (2.1.2.16) onto the PPC and BBDesktop (2.1.1.18) onto the PC. Used Activesync and got all my calendar entries over. Now when I come to have the BBC connect wirelessly, it fails to connect and eventually goes into 'Suspended by User' state.
I played around and defined a connection called 'Blackberry' with all the settings 'blackberry.net, rim, password etc..) and can now actually get it to Connect successfully...
The issue now is that no email flows.... in fact nothing flows at all and I can't send a message as it indicates it's a 'malformed message'.
Any ideas ?
I've had Cingular confirm that my data account is set up for 'BlackBerry Connect Unlimited'...
I never had a blackberry before so I'm into new territory here...
Any advice on how to get this working ?
Cheers
Dave
Does anybody knows which is the correct cingular blackberry plan for USA??????
Since some of you appear to have gotten Blackberry Connect working with Cingular on a mobile device I'm hoping you can give me some useful information. I have the service in place from Cingular, and have the understanding that with Blackberry Connect from Cingular I need no other data plan from them. It will cover all of my other data services. This part seems to be working fine. What's not working is the Blackberry Connect software itself. It always gives me "Blocked - Radio In Use". I am wondering if it is because I have a connection set up for "MY ISP" based on Cingulars default installation. If it's supposed to be using Blackberry Connect for data, should I be deleting the MY ISP configuration? Could that be what's keeping the radio in use? I would assume the only thing using the radio should be the Blackberry Connect service since that's the only plan I have.
Help?
Thanks
I get a message that the program cannot determine the type of network and to ensure the radio is on when I try to run Blackberry Connect for Pocket PC on my unlocked HP hw6945. It installed fine from the hosted exe file.
My theory is that the problem is the program is looking for the phone's frequency/band settings in WM5. The HP hides these as it features an automatic band/frequency transition radio. Does anyone know how to unhide WM5's menu and settings for the phone band/frequency?
BTW I have a new 64k Cingular smartcard sim with Blackberry Connect service (verified working with my Blackberry 7100t unlocked).
Hi all !
Was anybody able to run BlackBerry Connect on Cingular 1.31 ROM ?
It was run without any problems for me on 1.34, but does not work on 1.31.
Anybody else with the same problem ?
Regards,
baudy2
I followed HTC TyTN - Replace your blackberry instructions and software installs fine on Cingular 8525. I received system book from BES, but after the 8525 connects, a few minutes latter the Blackberry goes to "Suspended by user" and email is never received. Does anything else need to be setup, ie a different connection in the network connections on the device?
Thanks

The Calendar and Contacts works fine!! You need to find the contacts....its the same of BBconnect for Nokia.
But you cant view all the attachments, only excel, word.....
Not read .jpg .mp3 and more.
HP6945 update
I happened to go overseas last week and while there and roaming on O2 I was able to get past the second screen and get the BB Connect to start. However, it would not generate the PIN (status: "pending"). Hoping that once past that obstacle once back on Cingular US I could get further, but no joy.
Right now I'm trying the Xpress Mail product which pushes and syncs calendar and email via a redirector; it seems to be finicky though.

Cingular data plan options?

I have an old AT&T converted Cingular account that I originally got with an SMT5600 smartphone. I have been using it in a HTC Wizard for the last year.
I looked at the Cingular version of the Hermes yesterday, and I an tempted to upgrade, but I kind of balked at the data plan cost! the want $40 a month now! I have been paying $25 for unlimited data, and now they want to almost double that!
Has anyone tried, and been successful, putting and old SIM from AT&T or Cingular into one of these - keeping their current old data plan and being able to use 3G speeds?

I have with no problems I have the old Blue ATT SIM with the $24.99 unlimited mMode plane works great in my TyTn with 3G
The biggest factors in considering one plan over the other are the following:
- do you use Cingular's proxy
- do you use WiFi (which doesn't play well with the proxy settings)
- do you use Exchange ActiveSync / PushMail
- are you a big SMS user
- do you care about Cingular Video
- do you need access to ISP.CINGULAR (as opposed to WAP.CINGULAR), which includes a static ip address
PDAConnect (39.99/mo) needs no proxy and works better with PushMail, but does not include SMS or Cingular Video. This is the better plan for me personally.
I say try using the cheaper plan and see how it works for you...
marka2k, you just made my day!
That's great news...
... Maybe the really sneaky thing to do would be to go with any new (free) Cingular phone, get the 19.99 per month plan, and then switch....
goestoeleven,
I'm OK with current functionality, I would of course not mind the higher speed. I never use WiFi really.
I've heard that the Cingular connection works better than the old AT&T for things like radio streaming...

You won't get any new Cingular phone while staying on old AT&T plan. You'll have to buy an unlocked phone elsewhere.
I was referring to buying some generic Cingular phone with their 19.99 plan, and then buying a Hermes unlocked.
get the free phone

actually, that's what I did. I got a free RAZR phone (good for when I drive the motorcycle). I am on the MEdia Net plan for $19.99 that includes 200 SMS (and/or MMS). The MEdia Net plan works just fine with my unlocked TyTN.
The issue with the proxy is easy to work around. Set up the My ISP connection without the proxy, and the Work connection using the proxy. If you need the proxy, just go to IE and connect to wsp://device.home IE will then connect using the proxy & you can go from there...
from my experience they have never made me get the pda connect crap, i have always had the media net unlimited.. actually i just upgraded my data plan to the extreme that includes the 3k text and i even told them i had the 8525, they said ok and that there is promo where the first month is free and added it to my account
I have a few accounts, one of them being a legacy AT&T Wirelss plan.
The way I look at is, there is no reason to pay $480.00 a year($40.00 a month for 12 month) for a pda connect plan if you do not need the isp.cingular apn or the need to bypass the proxy server.
IMHO, I would buy the device at full retail, keep your AT&T plan and over the long run, save money on not upgrading to CNG and not paying for incoming txt messages.
Dan
Thanks guys!
So it sounds to me that I could take a SIM card from one of my smart card, with the $19.99 unlimited data plan and use it on my 8525. Of course it would now have that phones number. Is this right?
Thanks

your number is stored on that card, doesnt matter what phone its in (as long as its compatible with your provider)
cingular data plan
I signed up for new service and got an 8525. the media max and plans showed up as options. now with cingular online acct management, I can sign up for smartphone connect (i have) or media max plans, or pda connect for 20 more. the cingular proxy is only needed for connecting to their media net servers. so far I haven't needed or wanted to do that. there is a guide on how to set it up in the forum somewhere as a separate connection.
my download speeds from dslreports wap site are 650-800k. sometimes I have a long wait to download a page, but I think it isn't related to the data plan.
I haven't had anyone from cingular try to make me get pda connect, and i'm pretty sure it won't change the data service quality on my phone.
i just run the My Isp connection and it dont use the proxy, i have a regular unlimited data plan, i average over 400meg a month in data alone and all for the low price of the media max bundle, isnt life great
Anyone got a more detailed FAQ on the ISP settings?
I'd like to know what the differances are, addresses of the proxies..
ETC..
I've been trying to read up on everything..
Thanks!

Proxies Proxies Everywhere...
I have an 8525 with the default Cingular Settings.
First off.
Do I need the Proxy Settings?
I don't use any of Cingulars Services, nor do I care to.
I would like to use WIFI more if it worked right. (seams to be the Proxy Issue)
I do use the Web, Connect to servers and other machines, and basically do everything I do I my computer (at least everything I am able to do)
I also travel in Europe at times..
Or if I need one am I able to setup a Proxy Server of my own?
Any Benefit?
Or If I have to use a Cingular one is there a difference between the ISP.CINGULAR.COM, WEP.CINGULAR.COM and the WIRELESS.CINGULAR.COM
Thanks

I've contacted Cingular regarding the Static IP previously. They told me that the Data Plan Unlimited (which I'm on now) does not come with a static ip, that I share my IP with other users. This was a great let down for me, as I've seen other companies provide this with absolutely no problems. Would you be able to direct me on who I need to talk to, or what I need to say, to get this enabled on my account?
I do the 39(think it is 39 second from top unlimited plan).
I pay extra for text messages and save 5$ from the higher up plan (which does come with more messages, but I never use them).
My question is, for $5 more a month would I gain anything else to make it worth paying more?
Not sure what use a proxy and static ISP would be over what I use now.
Thanks in advance!

AMEN Shogun, i use the mediamax 1000 plan. i used it with the 8125 and when i had a Nokia 7710. Never had any problems at all. Even tho when i bought my 8125 the guy in the store swore up and down that there was no way the mediamax would work on that phone. He told me i would be back to change it after a week. lol. I told him to just leave my account alone. i need to check out this 3k plan kuzz i need more text

gettin' over charged on softbank using a 8525

Ok so i got charged close to $700 last month...ooooooooouch!!! I use a cingular 8525 unlocked to use softbanks service. I went to the store and they told me there is no way i can get unlimited data without going through their stupid yahoo! browser. If i use anything outside of s! mail and yahoo! browser (like explorer) i will be charged outside of the ulimited data plan they "say" they offer.
I don't thnk this girl knows what she is talking about because the X01HT is sold in japan so that would also apply to them too...i heard there is some like $100/month plan that lets u use anykind of browser and all internet. Does anyone have more information on this. thank you kindly.
You are in the united states and with att?
I'm on the media net unlimited plan and I use my phone for all kinds of stuff. You can get on the pda unlimited plan and use your phone for whatever without extra charges.
It's not a phone hardware issue, it's a software issue.
Probably on the Softbank X01HT they pre-installed a Y! browser and mail software that uses their specific "unlimited" server.
You could try to get that browser and mail software by installing the extended ROM for the softbank X01HT
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtendedRoms
scroll down until you find the one for Softbank.
DONT ask me how to install it. I did enough as it is to help you.
thank you much for your input...yea i am in japan not us
i am currently using blacks cooked rom so i know enough about installing that stuff...it would suck to have to downgrade though lol.
go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297687&highlight=softbank
Install the stuff and make sure the access point is: open.softbank.ne.jp
Once you click WIFIwake.exe in the windows directory, it should add the password for you in the softbank settings.
THIS SHOULD GIVE YOU ACCESS TO UNLIMITED INTERNET PACKETS for a maximum charge of about 10,000 a month (unless I am mistaken). - Seems to work for me anyways, although I don't think I have ever used a whole lot. It was more of an insurance thing for me to ensure I never got massive phone bills.
One thing though: you should make sure you are signed up to the unlimited plan. Just go to a softbank store and tell them you want "TSUKAI HODAI Interneto accessu" for your x01ht
Finally, does anybody know if this works if I use my softbank as modem to connect to my laptop? In theory it should -- I am just too chicken to try it.

Trouble connecting using AT&T sim

When I purchased this I was told that the device would work with a voice and data sim. Just that you wanted to be careful with how much data you might use. I have a AT&T sim with a corporate voice plan and unlimited data for a pda phone. I am not currently in a 3G market, but it is coming online soon, and can't seem to get connected with that sim. I have put in a data only sim from AT&T that we have but it is our emergency backup sim/card for our pos computers in our stores. I don't really want to have to purchase another $60 a month account to have a seperate sim as well as my $40 a month data plan on my pda phone, which I am not willing to give that up either. I would bump up my pda plan to $60 a month with voice if it would work that way but I just don't want to pay a $100 a month to have two seperate devices.
Basically when I am in town I can use the sim out of our back up cellular router but when I go out of town or on vacation I have to leave it behind and would like the option of putting my sim in the Shift and using that as needed.
Any ideas.
One last note. The weather will update with my sim but that is it. No email and no vista connectivity. It does say that it is connected but when I fire up explorer it beeps a bunch of times and then the red X goes infront of the network connection and it fails to load anything.

Can you try to setup a proxy on the WM site?
Maybe that will help you
set up new connection
i had the same problem. htc support solved it. you need to set up a new connection in snapvue. vista only recognizes a MEdia Net connection. go to settings in snapvue, open connections, add new modem connection, select media net with default settings, save
when you open vista the sim will be working for a connection
mine is working fine in winmo and vista with isp.cingular.com not media net, ill be using no proxies over here
Everyone thank you for all your suggestions. I should be able to do it with these ideas. I should have thought of some of these myself. Thanks again
Update: It worked, thanks a lot. I have not had to do this since I bought my imate K-Jam at over two years ago. Thanks again one more time!!!!

Unlocked T Mobile HD2's Won't Let You Connect To The Internet

I read about this somewhere, but i can't find the thread.
I know that normal T Mobile firmware requires you to connect to the web through T Mobile Web n Talk.
Well my firmware is now flash to 1.66 WWE and my phone is now unlocked.
I bought a O2 sim and a Vodaphone sim with 3GB and 1 GB prepaid data credit.
Whenever i open a browser app or go to setting> wireless controls > data connections i get this error message:
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
Cannot connect for unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings and change them if needed, tap settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacture's documentation and try again.
Settings
Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Hi
I have done the same to my phone and it works fine on O2.
I assume you did a hard reset after the debranding operation?
Once my phone came back to life after all the software changes, I went to Start/Settings/All Settings/Connections/Connection Setup. Tapped the operator button, selected O2 from the drop down list and the phone connected and got all the necessary settings for GPRS an HSPDA connections. You will need to setup a WiFi connection first (I think). It might have downloaded the settings via SMS.
However, if you want to set your phone up manually, try this site first, filesaveas.com/gprs.html
(as a new user I am not allowed to post links yet, so you will have to add the url to the beginning of the link).
it is full of great advice for UK mobile Phone Operators WAP/GPRS/HSDPA/Email settings.

um...
I'm not sure if i did the hard reset or not.
I'm going to test it on another Sim, as there is a chance that i don't actualy have usable credit on these Sim's so i'm going to try on a 3 Sim which gets 150mb free with 10 pound top up and is definitely for use in 3G phones.
My sims might be for wireless modem only, not too sure.
If that fails then i'll start look into other options.
How much of a problem would not hard resetting be?
Hopefully i did and that's not the problem.
Good to hear others have had success with T-mobile unlocked.
What is the worse case scenario? Re flashing and hard resetting?
Thanks.
if you were still on your tmo sim when you flashed to 1.66, then you probably still have the tmo settings for mobile data set as default. A hard reset is a good idea, and let the phone pick up the settings from the sim automatically, or at least make sure all trace of tmo is gone.
look here
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connections - manage existing connections to see a list of currently configured mobile networks
I use both a 3 SIM and a t-mobile and the HD2 will pick up their use, configure the settings and store them both at the same time and all automatically.
You shouldn't have the problem that you are experiencing. And its nothing to do with setting a WiFi connection.
Who unlocked the phone for you?

I haven't seen a phone SIM with prepaid data credits. If your phone is set for the right operaror, my guess is that you can't use this data allowance through your phone. You might try the router feature or connect a laptop to use the Web via your phone. If you're in the UK you might try T-Mobile and see if they still offer the PAYG SIM I have. 'Unlimited' data and texts are included in the month after you top up with £10. If you top up in April, data and UK SMSs would be free in May. Top up in May and browse and text for free in June. The £10 top up remains for calls. The offers change but this one suits me.
I use my laptop to connect to the Internet via my HD2 router. T-Mobile say this is against their rules. If they can tell the difference between phone and laptop use, perhaps you can use your data this way and so my earlier comment. They haven't said anything to me yet so I doubt it. I think you'd need to install the router; it's been removed by most operators.

Like I said I have the same SIM as the OP and of course it works in the phone. Its just a SIM with credit on it and I also use it in a mobile broadband USB modem through a 3 WiFi router without any problem.
Some of the prepaid 3 payg boxed deals are preloaded with bundles of data access thats what the OP must have, but there shouldn't be any problem with them connecting in a phone.

Well the O2 and T-Mobile sims that i suspected were modem only i used did not work, but the 3 payg sim i am now using is working perfectly.
3 offer 150mb free with every 10 pound credit topup.
The sims i got were not payg for phone use but modem use i believe.
In anycase it works now.
Where might i find any payg sims with preloaded data for mobile phone use?
Thanks.

I have a T-mobile PAYG SIM in my HD2. When I top up with £10, I get 'unlimited' data and UK text messages in the following month. The definition of unlimited varies but I've used over 1Gb without T-mobile becoming upset. It's not pre-loaded data but amounts to the same thing. You might need to check that the offer is still valid.
