Hey everyone. I am considering buying the Cingular 8125, which is also the Wizard i guess, and unlocking it to use with my AT&T plan. I dont want to change plans because i have an awesome plan, etc.
My question is, what will i be able to, and not be able to use on this phone using that old network? I suppose the data features will be useless because im not on cingulars network?
What do you guys think?
Thanks!
you will be able to use is unlocked but realize that cingulars tower coverage is better then atts, ..they purposley lower the coverage capacity of att devices so that u see a difference on cingular. And the data plans for att are now none existant . So beware.
are you currently doing this?
I just got a reply from someone who is using the mmode also.
i currently have no data on my cell plan, shoot....
can i ask where you got your phone? i am about to pay 450.00 for a non-contract 8125 tomorrow.
i'm posting this from an unlocked 8125 on a cingular blue (old AT&T) plan and I absolutely love it. I see no slowdown where i'm at compared to the cingular sim chips. on dslreports.com/mspeed I average between 125 and 155 kbs.
if you still can hurry and add unlimited mmode for $25 a month before they completely freeze the at&t accounts so that any change/add would warrant a migration.
once you do, get your 8125, carrier unlock it, cid unlock it, flash with button's cooked rom, flash with radio rom 1.13, customize your extended rom to the way you want (no need to use the cingular extended rom, its just bloatware because your on at&t's settings.
to get edge working just set your connections to connect to "my work network" on both settings, then go into my work network and add a connection "cellular (gprs)",name it at&t edge (or whatever you want. now the important part is that you have to set the apn as "proxy" without the quotes. then set this connection connects to the internet under the proxy setting.
leave username and password blank and domain blank. that should do it, then connect to internet explorer and you should be surfing on edge. good luck.
I paid full retail also, $490 after tax, and it was worth every penny. I could have got it for $250 if I migrated and used my FAN buisness account, but my blue plan is sooo much better. good luck.
cingular is pretty much refusing to sell one of these to me! The local store is out of them, and told me to call cingular to try to get one, and they wont let me have it without signing a contract. now what?
KINetics, i sent you a PM about details about how you did each of those steps. Are there writeups anywhere? Any additional help would be great. Thanks.

You should be able to order off line for full retail price of $449 without the contract. Thats where I got mine but had to pay full retail as I had just upgraded my phone with the Cingular 2125. I had 30 days to return the 2125, which I did, so they should credit my account soon with the price difference once it posts. I dont see why you cant just flat out buy it for retail tho. Just my 2c.
i'd love to do that but i cannot find any option online to buy the phone without a contract. how did you do it? I go to cingular.com and I try but cant get it to the card without a plan. I am on the old AT&T so if i try to Upgrade my device, it says i cant, i need to call because i need new plan?
suggestions?. thanks
danrw84: If you go to www.imatephonestore.com you can buy an unlocked phone there. I am using a JasJar with my AT&T SIM. No problems at all. You will have to pay full retail and get a Imate K-Jam which is the same as a Cingular 8125. The phone is $749 so i'm not sure you want to pay that much but it is completely unlocked and you can use with any GSM plan
They are based outside of Chicago so you can get next day service if you wish.

749 is quite a bit! Ebay has much better prices on the unlocks.
I got the phone thru cingular today for 314.00 its supposed to arrive tomorrow.
i am going to try to do it myself.
as far as the post from KINetics, anyone know where to get ahold of those ROMS hes refering to?
I did exactly what you're looking to do. I have all the settings if you get a phone. I bought one, cancelled the contract and took the fee hit, then unlocked it, etc.
PM me if you need the settings or have any questions.
Hi
i have a question on my tmobile mda in usa can i use black berry plan instead of $29.99 total internet package by tmobile please do reply to me if you know anything about it
Thanks
i have the blackberry plan. you won't be able to use the tmail email but you can set your own email server in pocket outlook
Im not sure how you want to use it, but all i wanted to do was surf the web and check my web-email on my MDA, and that 29.99 data plan seems rediculous. What I did was went online, and signed up for the "Tmobile Web" 5.99 package which supposedly allows you to use tmobiles portal for ringers and news ect. The thing is, i have full web access under that plan, i checked for any speed differences and couldn't find a thing wrong.
You do need to "trick" tmobiles website in order for someone with a MDA to get on there tmobile web plan, i told the site i switched my phone to a razr,(They have that little deal up to that tells you what phone your useing, and u can change it without really changing your phone) then went to plans, got rid of that 29.99 plan and added the 5.99, confirmed it, and switched back to mda, now my bills 30 bucks cheaper, and i have no less connection as far as i can tell.
Tmobile question for triple
What are your settings??? I try to browse the web and it doesnt work. I switched my phone online to a razr too.
Thanks!
Cyb
Well, I went through just this today with our business account. Bought a Vario at the store for a colleague and they automatically moved the device from the BB plan to the Internet plan at $29.99 as of course they don't support BB Connect so we couldn't possibly need it for that. Returned to office, blew out the ROM with the UK Ship, BB Connect etc. Phone TMO, switched the plan on the SIM to the $19.99 BB plan and bingo, full net access, unlimited downloads for streaming media and BB services. You gotta wonder at their insane pricing plans really....LOL
dude i have cingular and the plans are just as expensive if not more expensive..
because my 8125 is considered a pda.. i cant even use the basic web packages they offer..
have to get a full fledged data plan
the T-MobileWeb only allows you to route your HTTP traffic through their HTTP proxy server... all other ports are closed off.. its not so bad if you just need to surf the net but don't plan on your messengers or anything else working. I currently have an MPx220 so I don't quite know the settings you would need to set it up on a PPC.
The BB plan works fine with MSN Messenger and MSN Mobile etc (plus agile messenger and others)
hey fellows the black berry plan is working like a dream on my tmobile mda
dont know if this is right place to ask but, on http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=plans_webnwalk says:
...Messaging over Internet Protocol is prohibited by T-Mobile

do they mean msn,icq etc? if yes i'll cancel my order and tell them stick it to somewhere
Yes, I beleive that is exactly right, MSN, ICQ etc etc are not allowed at the moment. Under my terms and conditions it says this is to provide a decent experience for other users.
I beleive its purpose is to make people use the sms and voice features of t-mobile, rather than the mainly free use of internet services instead. It is after all there intention to make money on you as a customer.
I *think* they also frown on using your device as a modem for your laptop or pc. Tho i may be wrong on that as they sell the laptop web'n'walk card, but thats on there PRO service.
how much data can a chat consume anyway, 500kb an hr? at most! bad thing is they might just close msn or icq ports on their network and thats it
i dont use to much of it but i wouldn;t like to be prevented from being able to use it
arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  :x
Do they actually enforce it now?
From that, it looks like that is only on Web n' Walk Pro not the standard
from:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatche...RL=valuemobiles.at/OSD&P36=43XTB9&CID=0&CTY=8
Web ‘n’ Walk Professional is subject to a minimum term contract and credit check. Compatible handset or device required. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers, a fair use policy applies. T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data use (both sent and received) of up to 2GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed this volume of data in two (or more) consecutive months in any six month period to ask them to reduce their usage. If usage is not reduced, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied which will result in a reduced speed of transmission. Use of Voice over Internet Protocol and Messaging over Internet Protocol is prohibited by T-Mobile. If use of either or both of these services is detected T-Mobile may terminate all contracts with the customer and disconnect any SIM cards and/or web ‘n’ walk cards from the T-Mobile network.

I got My TM vario II this morning.
Fired up w&W then MSM and it works. I await the email telling me to stop.
I the meantime I'm usin it
seems strange they would ship the device with msn instaled if they didn't want you to use it...
maybe they are just reffering to skype and the such but got there terminogloy wrong...
best thing to do i would say is call them up and ask...
worst they can say is no your not allowed..

I think there may be a couple of reasons
1) By letting people use msn or skype you avoid using the networks features. The features t-mobile make money on and are in business for.
2) To see how the network performs with so many people on web'n'walk and payg users also having free access.
Maybe if they think there network is coping well with so many users they may remove this from there terms and conditions.
While breaking the t&c they can cancel your account, your more likely to get a letter asking you to stop it, and only if your causing a problem to other users or congestion to a cell tower.
I'm fairly certain that web'n'walk pro is the service used by laptop data cards, they have probably enabled restrictions here to stop heavy usage by laptops, I think the normal mobile services will be safe!
MSN on WnW
In my many calls to T-mobile customer services I have never hidden the fact that I wanted to connect to messenger, and I have never been informed that I cant.
My usage never goes over 2gb, so there is no need for them to look into my account in any depth, nor are there any means of definitively knowing if I am using Messenger anyway!
If you wish you can add the web n walk PRO bolt-on to your account for 9 pounds as opposed to 7.50 for the standard bolt-on. Though all it does is give you peace of mind if you wish to use you phone as a modem, and free access to T-mobile Hotspots.
There is no advantage to upgrading to pro in terms of network speed/usage allowance.
I have been using messenger since april with my web n walk bolt on and have had no issues whatsoever, so read into that what you will.

and just to back up what he said, ive been doing the same since april too!
they dont want you to use any IM not because of traffic, but because of lost revenue.
1 sms is around 10p.
1 sms is 160 bytes max.
1 megabyte is 1'048'576 bytes.
i.e. 1 megabyte carries more than 6500 sms
so: for transporting 1 megabyte of data, an operator has revenues of more than £650
imagine how terrified they are of you overloading their network (i.e. their megabyte trnasport facility if you will) and only give them a miserly £8 every month for it.
basically it is a disaster for them if you do more IM and less sms. Hence the T&C's that say they can boot you from their net if you do that (i dont think they will, but their contract gives them option should they choose).
they are living in never never land if they think they can sustain this for any period of time.
well not sure about msgr but real media streaming banned by t-mobile
OK just to clear this matter up.
The MDA VarioII Does NOT support MSN messenger or windows Live Messenger on T-mobile web n walk.
This is a big shortfall in my opinion. It doesn't even allow messenger to run even when the radio is turned off and you have USB or wifi connection!
hence the blocking might not be on the 'T-mobile network' but within the registry of the device!
Anyone got any workarounds/ideas on overcoming this?
BTW: Skype™ for Pocket PC works fine!

but others above have posted it does work on there vario 2s?
maybe somethings not installed / set up correctly on your device?
only have a vario 1 myself but on t- mobile and have been using the msm features since 1st april when web and walk £7.50 option became available
I have got an MDA Vario II which I purchased direct from T-Mobile via their Website a couple of weeks back on one of their Web'n'Walk tarriffs. MS Messenger was pre-installed on it and I have had no problems logging on and chatting. Surely if they don't want you to use Messenger, they wouldn't include it in the software bundle.
I don't see any problem using it as long as I use it fairly and make sure I don't exceed their fair use limits.

Not only was it installed on my Vario II, the t-mobile customized manual actually tells you how to set it up. I did query this on a number of occasions and the responce I got was always the same, IMing is not allowed on either web'n'walk or web'n'walk pro.
I have a T-Mobile MDA Vario II, which came pre-installed with Mobile messenger. I installed live messenger mobile, and it worked fine, as it did on my MDA Pro until Microsoft threw a spanner in the works. Messenger is NOT blocked on the Vario II - that is total Bo***cks.
We are all suffering the same problem. I just hope hey bring out the new CAB soon because Agile is just soooooo rubbish in comparison.
I'm waiting with baited breath.
Which programs run?
Hi guys,
sorry for reactivating this old thread. However, I was just wondering if some of the T-Mob UK WnW users could tell me which communication programs they can use without trouble. I experience the following situation:
1.) Live Messenger runs without any problem
2.) Can't get ICQ to work
3.) Skype is possible, though text chat with Skype is not
4.) Couldn't get Fring to work
Can someone please confirm these? Additionally, I'd like to hear whether or not someone managed to use VoIP with the standard WnW bolt on.
N.B.: Don't want to stirr up the "legal" discussion, just want to talk about the technical aspects...
Cheers,
MilchCow
I have an old AT&T converted Cingular account that I originally got with an SMT5600 smartphone. I have been using it in a HTC Wizard for the last year.
I looked at the Cingular version of the Hermes yesterday, and I an tempted to upgrade, but I kind of balked at the data plan cost! the want $40 a month now! I have been paying $25 for unlimited data, and now they want to almost double that!
Has anyone tried, and been successful, putting and old SIM from AT&T or Cingular into one of these - keeping their current old data plan and being able to use 3G speeds?

I have with no problems I have the old Blue ATT SIM with the $24.99 unlimited mMode plane works great in my TyTn with 3G
The biggest factors in considering one plan over the other are the following:
- do you use Cingular's proxy
- do you use WiFi (which doesn't play well with the proxy settings)
- do you use Exchange ActiveSync / PushMail
- are you a big SMS user
- do you care about Cingular Video
- do you need access to ISP.CINGULAR (as opposed to WAP.CINGULAR), which includes a static ip address
PDAConnect (39.99/mo) needs no proxy and works better with PushMail, but does not include SMS or Cingular Video. This is the better plan for me personally.
I say try using the cheaper plan and see how it works for you...
marka2k, you just made my day!
That's great news...
... Maybe the really sneaky thing to do would be to go with any new (free) Cingular phone, get the 19.99 per month plan, and then switch....
goestoeleven,
I'm OK with current functionality, I would of course not mind the higher speed. I never use WiFi really.
I've heard that the Cingular connection works better than the old AT&T for things like radio streaming...

You won't get any new Cingular phone while staying on old AT&T plan. You'll have to buy an unlocked phone elsewhere.
I was referring to buying some generic Cingular phone with their 19.99 plan, and then buying a Hermes unlocked.
get the free phone

actually, that's what I did. I got a free RAZR phone (good for when I drive the motorcycle). I am on the MEdia Net plan for $19.99 that includes 200 SMS (and/or MMS). The MEdia Net plan works just fine with my unlocked TyTN.
The issue with the proxy is easy to work around. Set up the My ISP connection without the proxy, and the Work connection using the proxy. If you need the proxy, just go to IE and connect to wsp://device.home IE will then connect using the proxy & you can go from there...
from my experience they have never made me get the pda connect crap, i have always had the media net unlimited.. actually i just upgraded my data plan to the extreme that includes the 3k text and i even told them i had the 8525, they said ok and that there is promo where the first month is free and added it to my account
I have a few accounts, one of them being a legacy AT&T Wirelss plan.
The way I look at is, there is no reason to pay $480.00 a year($40.00 a month for 12 month) for a pda connect plan if you do not need the isp.cingular apn or the need to bypass the proxy server.
IMHO, I would buy the device at full retail, keep your AT&T plan and over the long run, save money on not upgrading to CNG and not paying for incoming txt messages.
Dan
Thanks guys!
So it sounds to me that I could take a SIM card from one of my smart card, with the $19.99 unlimited data plan and use it on my 8525. Of course it would now have that phones number. Is this right?
Thanks

your number is stored on that card, doesnt matter what phone its in (as long as its compatible with your provider)
cingular data plan
I signed up for new service and got an 8525. the media max and plans showed up as options. now with cingular online acct management, I can sign up for smartphone connect (i have) or media max plans, or pda connect for 20 more. the cingular proxy is only needed for connecting to their media net servers. so far I haven't needed or wanted to do that. there is a guide on how to set it up in the forum somewhere as a separate connection.
my download speeds from dslreports wap site are 650-800k. sometimes I have a long wait to download a page, but I think it isn't related to the data plan.
I haven't had anyone from cingular try to make me get pda connect, and i'm pretty sure it won't change the data service quality on my phone.
i just run the My Isp connection and it dont use the proxy, i have a regular unlimited data plan, i average over 400meg a month in data alone and all for the low price of the media max bundle, isnt life great
Anyone got a more detailed FAQ on the ISP settings?
I'd like to know what the differances are, addresses of the proxies..
ETC..
I've been trying to read up on everything..
Thanks!

Proxies Proxies Everywhere...
I have an 8525 with the default Cingular Settings.
First off.
Do I need the Proxy Settings?
I don't use any of Cingulars Services, nor do I care to.
I would like to use WIFI more if it worked right. (seams to be the Proxy Issue)
I do use the Web, Connect to servers and other machines, and basically do everything I do I my computer (at least everything I am able to do)
I also travel in Europe at times..
Or if I need one am I able to setup a Proxy Server of my own?
Any Benefit?
Or If I have to use a Cingular one is there a difference between the ISP.CINGULAR.COM, WEP.CINGULAR.COM and the WIRELESS.CINGULAR.COM
Thanks

I've contacted Cingular regarding the Static IP previously. They told me that the Data Plan Unlimited (which I'm on now) does not come with a static ip, that I share my IP with other users. This was a great let down for me, as I've seen other companies provide this with absolutely no problems. Would you be able to direct me on who I need to talk to, or what I need to say, to get this enabled on my account?
I do the 39(think it is 39 second from top unlimited plan).
I pay extra for text messages and save 5$ from the higher up plan (which does come with more messages, but I never use them).
My question is, for $5 more a month would I gain anything else to make it worth paying more?
Not sure what use a proxy and static ISP would be over what I use now.
Thanks in advance!

AMEN Shogun, i use the mediamax 1000 plan. i used it with the 8125 and when i had a Nokia 7710. Never had any problems at all. Even tho when i bought my 8125 the guy in the store swore up and down that there was no way the mediamax would work on that phone. He told me i would be back to change it after a week. lol. I told him to just leave my account alone. i need to check out this 3k plan kuzz i need more text
Hey,
My friend's phone has (free) Internet access. I doubt it's free but I know she doesn't have a data plan, and she claims she isn't getting any usage charges for accessing the Internet. She's had Cingular for a few years now. Do they offer pay-as-you-use Internet?
Anyway, I'm wondering if I could somehow establish a connection with her phone and then access the Internet. Possibly Bluetooth? I'm using the Wing (HTC Herald).
Generally phones that have BT can function as BT modem. The paring on your side should be pretty straight forward but setting up your friends phone (not a WM device right?) depends on its model.
Yeah I posted the message because I couldn't get it working. I thought I had everything set up correctly on my phone. I probably... I just have to set hers up correctly. She has a Nokia N75 - http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=products,n75
Anyone have any experience with this?
Cingular does have pay as you go, it is very expensive like 1.5cents per k. This ads up in an awful hurry. If this is a new account for your friend, you should check online and see if she is racking up data usage. If so add a data plan before the billing cycle ends. Can be done through cs and they will make it retroactive.
N75 should work as a modem with the HTC Wing without a problem.
I rarely come up to see a data plan in US that have unlimited data access btw
Oh also btw, theres a simpler solution to just insert your friend's sim card into your T-mobile Wing (as long as its unlocked ). Cingular and T-mobile both use GSM anywayz (not like Sprint or Verizon using CDMA).
