anybody have links to benchmark tests of wizard vs. hermes? thinking about getting a hermes and i need to know if its really THAT much faster than the wizy.
excuse the title, im working on about 2 hours sleep
Ive got both and I must admit my wizard running crossbow (wm6) is leaving my hermes for dust! However I do feel that the roms for hermes are not on par yet with the ones for the wizard, so hopefully sometime soon there be a rom that shows the hermes for it true colours
IMO, the diff between a hermes and a wizard is something no ROM can fix:
3G
I've never surfed so fast. My search today plugin (treo lift) gives me instant google results. I can stream 96K to my A2DP headset. I don't use the $10 Hotel Internet coverage any more because my laptop can access 3G Internet speeds internet through DUN (soon to be Internet Sharing when the AKU 3.x TyTN ROM is released).
Before I had 3g coverage I missed my 8125 because it's ROM really was faster and besides, the device had almost double the battery life.
Now, I can't go back.

i agree with u 100% 1000kbit/sec on 3g COMPARED TO 96kbit/sec on edge
Hands down, the 3G data is addictive. The first time you travel with it, you won't know how you did without it before... as long as you can keep this thing juiced, you'll be happy.
Soon The WM6 will be available for Hermes...
Eagerly waiting,....
omg!!!! are you serious? so you mean that my 8125 that i got for about $100, unlocked for free, and my dog left bite marks on, with crossbow running on it is faster than the miracle machine (tytn)?
sorry for the gloating. i was really about to shell out the money to get a hermes. but now i don't think i have to.
question... 3g is embeded in hardware right? there wont be a software tweak to allow 3g on to a wizard, correct? i'm on tmobile and i love it here. only thing is internet package is $30 and its not even 3g. i refuse to go to cingular. (we've got big beef since about 1999 when they were at&t. still haven't paid those bastards. no one talks to me like that.)
thanks for the info guys.
*back to wizard subforum*
Faster is a relative term. It's screen response is faster when overclocked to 240mhz (who doesn't overclock their wizard tho?). It's connectivity is snail like by comparison. 3G is a hardware feature unfortunately.
Thanks for stopping by!

Am i the only one having problems with reception? Im always getting dropped calls and my AIM always disconnects. I tried a speedtest and get 70-130kbps on edge but my bud with a sidekick gets ~200. Sort of wierd considering tmobile US only gets gprs i believe? But anyway, if theres a fix then thatd be great.
btw, hows that foil trick in the other forum?
Actually, the Sidekick III (hiptop 3) uses EDGE technology also; this is just an assumption that he has an SK3 since the bandwidth hints EDGE technology.
EDGE speeds will vary depending on your location. In my house on my MDA, where i have full bars, I average about 210Kbps.
Yeah sorry, he has a Sidekick 2 and we were both in the same place when we did the speed test. Cingular sucks
i have really crappy reception with the tmobile mda too vs when i pull the sim card out and plug it into an old unlocked nokia.
My reception has been pretty good. I think it does a lot better then my Motorola Razr ever did.
The 8125 or the MDA doesn't support Edge.
Also, the orginal roms had problems. Update your wixard to a 2.21-2.26 rom and all should be well.
drdingo21, what do you mean 8125/MDA/Wizard doesn't support EDGE?!
ofcourse they do! maybe you dont have EDGE service available in your area but all Wizard variations do indeed support EDGE. I get ~180kb/s in my neighborhood but it can fall to 40kb/s at times during peak hours....not that i care because i mostly use it to check email and stuff like that

WRONG.
The Wizard is a Class 10 Edge device... the fastest Edge device available.
Don't spout off incorrect statistics when you don't know what you're talking about.
The fastest speed test I've seen on my 8125 was in the 180kbps range....
Most of the time it's between 80 and 120 though.
I just ran a speed test and got 81kbps

how are you able to do speed tests? i've just recently upgraded my rom to the newest one and reception is somewhat better. However i'm definitely not able to get those blazing speeds that you are mentioning. Is that thru wifi or thru the phone providers data network? thanks!
Well, according to Boy Genius Report T-mobile will be rolling out their 3G network by summer 2008 which is long overdue. What I'm curious about is how this will affect current users and rates. Will I have to buy a new phone or will my wing be able to use the new 3G network? Will the data rates go up or change from unlimited? Anybody heard any information on this?
Their 3G system is still GSM compatible, so having a wing is still ok. But that means they will have to release their 3G phone (a.k.a. Kaiser from what my sources tell me.)
As far as rates go: I dunno.
I'll just be glad when they stop messing around with the towers and service here.
will this affect the sucky EDGE??...
will they finish before AT&T?!
will it mean more stability in the connections??
will living near an airport mean you'll still get knocked off when a plane flies overhead??
who knows!.. but we will definitely find out sooner or later, right?

Awesome! Hopefully I'll be able to stream some decent videos and data on my wing once 3G comes around! Edge sucks when it comes to that. Appriciate the info!
But I thought the Wing is not 3G capable.
it would only make sense that the 2g network and equipment will still work until everyone has slowly migrated over to the new 3g network and the first phones would work on both networks.

I wanted the Tilt so damn bad I was almost willing to switch providers, but when I found out I could get a Wing for 79 bucks I stuck with T-Mo, thinking I'd wait ANOTHER year for them to roll out 3g. I would just have to buy a Kaiser if they came out with one that wasn't hobbled. (Can't someone put a 624mhz processor, and a decent amount of RAM in one of these? Is that too much to ask?)
Ya' know, maybe I should rethink that. I used a Psion 5 for years before switching to an iPAQ 2215, then a 2755-- all the while thinking: "Man, if I could get a keyboard, phone and Pocket PC rolled into one, that would be the best!"
I've had a Wing for a couple of months and I don't honestly recall one time that I've used the keyboard. Of course, it's keyboard is a piece of junk compared to the Psion 5's, but using the iPAQ's for so long conditioned me into a stylus typist.
I really have high hopes for Firefox portable on 3g though. This summer?--- well, I guess we've all heard that before!
I have heard different things, i surfed the net and these forums and i still get different things. all i wanna know is, is the wing compatible with the new 3G network coming out this summer?
No.
it will connect to the available compatible frequency. The expected 3/3.5G network will operate at a different frequency that the wing's radio doesn't connect to.
unless the newer radio roms somehow added that connection to that frequency... then no.

By the time T-mobile has their 3/3.5G..3.5+??.. network up and running smoothly.. HTC might well have a better and much sexier phone than the TyTn II....and from what I could tell the MDA Vario III is higher model of it than the original :O..unlike the Tilt which is a lower model but has this 1 advantage over it's big brother.. hope T-Mobile doesnt water down the Vario III before it gets over here, or should I say if?...and a maybe $300-$500 price tag for Vario III(via upgrade or contract and if they wait long enough it might be running a stock full, stable WinMobile 6.1 rather than buggy leaked one)versus $800+ for Kaiser? not to mention the still unsolved video drivers travesty with it :'(... new Touch Cruise and the P6500(Sedna) are pretty freaking sweet even compared to HTC's flagship TyTn II.
I actually love my phone enough that I might wait till next year for a phone with stock WinMobile 7 and all the freaky powers, motion sensor technology, and processors that phones running it are going to need. Those r going to make my Wing look like Razr! :'( I'll miss you Wing...btw, the TyTn II/Kaiser won't be able to run a lot of the previewed Windows Mobile 7 features either.
T-Mobiles 3G is slated to be substantially faster than AT&T's.
No one knows for sure if current 3G phones will work, but I have a Hermes and I'm being locked out of my internet in South Florida due to 3G testing, so i'm assuming it will work when it's released since I'm hitting a firewall right now.
A t-mobile rep on that board said they are going to have new pricing, so it's most likely going to be more expensive.
Questions...
I wonder if the prices for the unlimited data plans will change for people who are already in contracts. I'm paying an extra $19.99/month for the Total Internet add-on right now. Guess I'll just have to wait and see...
The Wing has 3G just not the one that we think is compatible to the new network right?

Ummm, isnt Tmo's 3G supposed to be on the 1700 MHz band? That means the tilt etc wont work........
I'm hearing mixed things from everyone. I hope the wing will work but no one knows for sure.
Wing To Shift
im gonna change to the shift soon and hopefully i dont have problems with service
A T-Mobile wing is not a 3G phone so drop it and get a 3G phone
I, obviously, have a Herald and I was wondering that if I get a Mogul and go with Sprint because they have EVDO and apparently their plan would have everything mine has but would be almost 30% cheaper, would that be a good deal?
I was also thinking about the Kaiser and I've read that you can unlock it to work for any kind of service provider but I was wondering if it supports EVDO and I'm just wondering if it was worth switching because of all the buying/selling of things things.
The Herald does has a slow processor and not only is the service plan good but I wondering if either of those phones are "better" than this one?
EDVO and GMS are imcompatible. You won't be able to use a tilt in Sprint's network, only in other GSM networks. (AT&T and Tmobile, for example.)
Where do you live? T-Mobile's 3G roll-out is picking up momentum, they've been cracking out 2-3 cities per week lately. It may not be too far off for you. Of course you will need a new phone, but the Android device is supposed to be announced next week...
I live in El Paso, Texas. Is there a place where I can check on the status of T-Mobile's 3g area progress?
The main thing I want is faster internet for my phone (or possibley a different one) and a faster processor. I was going to sell my Wing since it's only a month old (got a new one ) and get a Mogul on ebay and get Sprint's 70 dollar plan that has all the same features my T-mobile plan has but Sprint's is cheaper and faster internet, plus the phone is better no?
Also. Do you know the specs for this phone? Wow how much better is the Android cause I read a lot of nice things about it
Looks like El Paso isn't getting 3G by the end of 2008, but several other places in Texas already have it or will by the end of the year.
http://tmonews.com/2008/09/t-mobile-officially-announces-3g-cities/
I don't know the specs for the Android phone, but there are some vids on Youtube and it's looking pretty sweet. Supposedly T-Mobile is going to have something official to say on it on Sept. 23.
Ah yeah I've seen videos and read about how people gossip that it's only going to cost 200 dollars. I hope it has a slide-out keyboard.
Hmm damn maybe I should just wait it out then??
Oh I was also wondering if the 5.99 T-Zones proxy hack still works to get full internet? Cause 20 dollars is very outrageous and that's one of the concrete reasons as to why I want a different plan with faster, and cheaper, internet.
Re: T-Zones proxy hack. Some users are reporting that it is still working in certain areas, but T-Mobile is actively closing this loophole. It hasn't worked here in close to a year. Even if it works for you now, I wouldn't bet it will last.
Which data plan are you looking at on Sprint? Some of their 'everything' plans are decent, but IMO $20 for unlimited internet is one of the best deals in the industry.
Hmm that sucks. See I wouldn't have mind paying 20$ for unlimited internet if it went faster than 150kbs/s. This 25kb/s is blasphemy for 20 dollars.
I was looking at sprint's 70$ plan; unlimited texting and picture messaging plus 450 whenever minutes with nights starting at 7pm and their wonderful EV-DO internet. I was planning on buying an HTC Mogul.
I think that's a better deal no? But that Google Android phone is wnticing me to keep T-mobile...

haha me too!
but 3g sounds too expensive haha
Ahh lol well I'm sure the OS for the G1 will be ported... The main reason I wanted a new phone and better internet is because my parents are cheap and can't afford anything and I use internet sharing ALOT for my homework and it's so painfully slow . Plus it would be good to be able to download things that take a few hours rather than a few days.
Yeah but I'm thinking about selling this phone to get it. If the plans are under 100 dollars, I'm going to get it .
Well thanks guys for all the help and answering my questions. I guess I'll wait it out for the G1. I'm glad it's cheap.
buru, do you have EDGE coverage in your area? 25kbs is abysmal, even for straight GPRS! Before EDGE, I could pull close to 40kbs on GPRS, now that EDGE is here my speeds hover just under 200kbs. From what I've heard, some newer phones can surpass 200kbs on EDGE to, if they have up to date hardware with support for the latest EDGE specification. Granted, the Herald is no spring chicken, but you should be able to manage ~175kbs. It doesn't sound like much, but most sites I need to access on my phone offer a mobile site and EDGE speeds are quite tolerable for loading these pages.
Holy **** what?? About 175 kb/s?? Aww **** El Paso, Texas gets nothing good!!
Well I'm not sure but I believe it's GPRS. Plugged in using internet sharing or just downloading on Opera 4.1 my average is always about 25kb/s.
Man that blows that mines rediculously low. Where do you live and should I call T-Mobile and ask what their average speeds should be for my Wing? Cause I do have the total internet.
Damn even at 40kb/s I would be content but 200!! Geez... sadness. Now I'm even more disappointed.
buru- Go to this page and enter your zip code. Be sure to check "Display data coverage" at the bottom. When I searched El Paso, it showed the whole area fully covered by EDGE.
http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/pcc.aspx
Are you running the stock ROM on the Wing? It is notorious for being crap. Also, check your data connection settings... perhaps your Wing is only set to GPRS. I'm not sure what the options are, but when I had my Treo 750 you could choose between GPRS and GRPS/3G... maybe the Wing has an option for EDGE...?
**** yeah I'll check it right now.
Lol the stock ROM is mad slow, screw that . I'm using ttran's wonderful Open Touch 6.5 no throttle and no spb.
I don't believe there's an option for EDGE cause when I connect to the internet it always displays "Connecting to GPRS..." regardless of anything.
Hmm... I'll mess with the internet options a bit and see what's up. If I find that everything points to my internet speeds being faster, should I call T-Mobile or go to their store over here and ask what's up?
Thanks also btw. But does the Wing even support EDGE? Maybe that's why?
The Wing definitely supports EDGE. If it is not a problem with the internet connection settings, you should call Customer Care (1-800-937-8997) and ask for PDA support. Be sure to call from a different phone, as they will want to go through some steps with you on the Wing. Don't even bother going into a store because this is going to be beyond the capabilities of 99% of the reps, and they will just put you on the phone with support anyways.
Hmm I think I will because I looked in the data connections and the only options are Cellular line (GPRS), Cellular line, My ISP, and some other one.
Damn that sucks though. So for sure my phone's internet speed should be faster than 25kb/s?
Based on your options, GPRS is the right setting. Technically, EDGE is a form of GPRS (unlike 3G, which is a whole new protocol). You should be getting more than 25kb for sure.
For the record, using my wing here in Tennessee, it ALWAYS says connecting to GPRS, but it displays an E for Edge network, or a G for GPRS Data network next to the signal icon up top of the screen. In most of the area(in backwoods TN) I get pretty darn good Edge coverage, running around 150 to 175 kbps. Definitely check it out, might try a different ROM if all else fails, just to eliminate that as a problem.
Syn
Hmm well it's always an E next to the network icon but it's easily less than 40kb/s all the time.
**** it I'm calling T-Mobile and asking how fast my internet speeds should be over here where I live.
I'm sure it isn't the ROM I'm using... It's ttran's OT 6.5 and I'm sure almost everyone else is also using it and not getting crappy ass speeds?
Like many of us I've been salivating at the prospect of the HD's large screen and, having decided that as good as my Touch Pro keyboard is, I don't use it enough to hold out for an HD with a keyboard (if there is even one in the roadmap). But..... I'm still smarting at not having 3G on my Touch Pro (and I know our XDA-Developers team may yet lick that limitation) so I'm seriously questioning whether I should go for the HD knowing it may never have 3G capability in the USA. Anyone else share this concern?
My need for 3G is about 10% of its total use...and my Edge network isn't exactly a snails pace. My Raphael is the best phone I've ever had, and I truly enjoy the ability to customize it. I am jumping ship and getting the HD without second thought. If the Elite team cracks the 3G...that's just the icing on the perfect raphael cake I have.

I share
yeah, ummm, no 3G coverage here, don't care, lol. your 10%, well I am about 1%, just when I travel and can't hardly tell a difference anyway. Two things: Either the HTC rep that gave us bad news about the arrival of Blackstone in US is not telling the truth or doesn't know the truth to tell it. OR..... HTC really has the wrong idea about consumers in the US. Surely they realize that we want the device because of the many other improvements that it brings. The improvements in performance and the killer screen does it for me. I have owned PDA phone after PDA phone starting with the old Verizon xv6600, which by the way has a large screen compared to kaiser and many others and I know a breakthrough when I see one. If they really don't plan to release this device, then they had better be working on a 3G version with or without a sliding keyboard that runs windows mobile 7. If their really going to skip around generations and stuff, that wm7 device better arrive on time and on par with the iPhone in refinement and usability. They should make a device that people don't really need to cook ROMs to be satisfied with. Do it right the first time, don't take backwards steps, don't take baby steps either. Turn one foot directly in front of the other, in full force and confidence; the smart way. I want it now!

We finally got 3G here when I live in Millsboro Delaware. After installing Solace I to get the Big H now. I was either dumb or confussed. LOL However after the good people on here explained that H is better then 3G I was delighted. Not sure why. Called ATT said it was a little better, well faster and was fine for me to use with my unlimited plan.
Solace 1.5 is so smooth I just can't believe that I'd think of getting or replacing my Tilt. I think I finally found the phone for me.

I switched from the Tytn 2 over to the Diamond not too long ago. I gave up 3G for slimmer form factor. I barely notice the difference. Maybe occasionally when I use YouTube or Opera, I wish I had a faster connection, but my day to day use of corporate push email is unaffected.
I would like to see the XDA pros open up 3G on these phones, but I feel the features are worth living with EDGE.
...but then again, I've been tempted to pick up a Slingbox lately too. Not sure I'd trust Slingplayer running on E.

So does that mean I'm no longer the stalker...but now you are?
T-mobile USA has 1700 Mhz and 2100 MHz frequencies for 3G support.
This is what I got from their website
--------------------------------------------------------------------
What frequency does your 3G network support?
Our 3G network supports both the 1700MHz and 2100MHz frequencies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So... I'll try 3G there once I get mine....
3G or no 3G
I have a Touch Diamond with no 3G (edge only) and one with 3G. (the big H) .
To me, not a big enough difference to worry about. The Edge connection is actually fast enough for me. May a half sec. difference in connection to web pages. Im getting the Touch HD. Besides most of the time I'm on wifi anyway. No big deal
So what exactly determines if we can get 3G in the US? Is it the radio? I have never quite understood this part.

Not determined yet. The Elite team in the Raphael ROM forum does admit there is different hardware. They have connected to the US 3G, but don't think it is stable. They haven't finalized their research as of yet, but sure some more information will be coming shortly.

ok so it is hardware inside the phone that differs between US and EU 3G?
So if the bands on the specs page of the phone list US bands then it should be good to go?
Not trying to hyjack the thread I am just curious.
i will be getting an HD and droppign the touch pro... i think

As far sas i heard. its the onboard chip that does the differents. HTC said that on some of the old phones, where it got hacked and worked with 3G, hardware was there but not activated. thats why the people here could get it to work. But HTC stated that this is not the case in the HD. THey said that the HD can not be hacked to work with 3G, as it is not possible hardware wise for the HD to recieve 3g signals on the USA network
i believe i said this already once but its more of a matter of just the antennas and if they can recieve the usa 3g bands or not. the actual chipset i know can use the bands its a matter or just enabling them.
I thought the 3g put a 3g icon not the big h? Thats how it shows on my friends tilt. Me i have not had 3g ever since i have used at&t lol cause i had the wizard and now the wing. Does 3g affect call performance or just data, if so i could care less about 3g then. Although i would rather no pay the premium price on the hd buying from europe
AT&T has HSUPA but you have to activate it in the settings.
so i was just browsing the tmobile site, and i noticed that if you add the snap to your cart as a new contract data is selected by default. why are they doing this, i know several people who just use the dash for a phone with no internet because of the lovely keypad and the many useful apps.
so if i upgrade to the snap are they going to make me add the 25 dollar plan?
if so im not upgrading through them. no 3g in my area, totally not with the extra money right now.
(yea this seems more of an hofo question but i decided to ask here cause i like this forum better)
Yes you are required to get the Data plan, you however are not required to keep it. 24 hours after you place your order simply go back into T-Mobile's web site go into your account and remove the data plan option. Simple as pie
good info to have, just might have to get a snap before the end of the year

I love my Dash, but I cant live without my new Dash 3G. I have only begun to customize it. While I did have 6.1 on my old Dash it was nothing compared to this new one, its so damn fast (even with T-Mo's junk on it). So far the only 'problem' I am having with it is the GPS is a bit slow to lock on (about 10 seconds average), it is faster if I turn on the assisted but there has to be a way to speed up the sat lock
is it really that much better than the dash? how is the cam quality? i have two dash's and one takes great pics, and the other takes so-so pics.

I posted why I think it is better in another thread so I will save repeating myself. With that said it has a Bigger battery, Bigger Keyboard, Faster processor. Seems a bit more user friendly too(unless you are using the cooked roms on your old dash) You be the judge.
They updated the cam to 2mp so it is a little improvement over the old dash. It does seem to have a lot more Cam features.
Well worth the upgrade IMHO.
I had an interesting experience upgrading my dash to the dash 3g. When I finally made up my mind to purchase the new version I went to the T-Mobile store (corp store) where they told me that I could not purchase the upgrade without a data plan. I decided to hold off and try it on their website. Viola, If you upgrade through the website you are not required to add the data plan. Just a little FYI if you already have T-Mo. Upgrade to T-Mobile Dash 3G (HTC Maple)
I just upgraded my step son's Blackberry Curve to the Dash 3G (HTC Maple..Snap...Ozone) and there was no mention of having to upgrade to a data plan with the purchase of the Dash 3G. I configured his Curve to run with web2go, the $9.99 plan and currently on my Wing, I run T-Mobile Web (grandfathered) $5.99 using APN epc.tmobile.com. I had a conversation with Tier 2 support and they told me the Dash 3G would only run on their higher priced plans, but they said the same thing about my Wing and his Blackberry and I can tell you it's a breeze to edit "Manage Connections" in Windows Mobile 6.5 and I have no proxy settings on either phone and they work. One note, for Blackberry users the APN is "internet2.voicestream.com" with web2go; take care.
