Help, newly installed programs not displayed in "Add/Remove Programs"! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

This problem has happened to me a few times with different ROMs but I haven't be able to find the pattern nor the solution!
Basically everything starts very well, when I install a new program it appears in "Add/Remove Programs" in Settings. Then at some point strange thing happens, when I install a new program (any program, not specific) it no longer appears on the list! However, I can see it as installed and it actually appears on the "Add/Remove Programs" of ActiveSync(v4.2)! I can remove it by using ActiveSync but not on the device because I can't select it!
And the other strange thing is, I can see the program's folder under "\Windows\AppMgr\" (every program installed manually should has its folder in here as I understand). And I can also see it under the registry "\HKLM\Security\AppInstall\". It just DOES NOT appear on the device "Add/Remove Programs" list! This happens to all programs after the problem starts but those installed before that point are still displayed!
I am wondering if anyone knows the reason why this happens and if there is any solution like registry hack anything like? Although this is not the end of the day as I can still remove them via ActiveSync, it does annoys me because of the fact that I can't remove it directly from the device.
Thanks in advance!!

Try sk tools software , it has a detailed info for add or remove prog.

Hi,
I have the same problem, not certain what caused it, but you can get items back in the list by following the steps below:
Get programs back into uninstall list:
1) go to..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\AppInstall\
2) Select the application directory that is not showing up in the list
3) Change the DWORD Role data from 40 to 24
4) Now the application will show up in the list.
Cheers
Rowan

Excellent!!
Thanks a lot for the advices guys!!
I will try Rowan's suggest first because it is easier and sounds good to me! Only thing is I have flashed my Universal so currently the problem is gone. I will try it if it happens again or I may try it on my Windows Mobile Device Emulator later on.

Help: can't uninstall programs from jasjar

I am unable to uninstall programs from my jasjar. When I try to remove programs from activesyn there is no response. When I try to remove programs directly from jasjar with "remove programs" I get the response that the program was not removed and would I like to remove the name of the program from the list of installed programs. Either way my programs cannot be removed. Can anyone help me with this problem?
Thanks
Softreset first then uninstall... Some times you can not uninstall two apps after each other. You have to softreset before each removal...
I tried your suggestions several times but it does not work for me. Any other thoughts?
Thanks
WM5 doesn't flush the registry until the device is powered off. You should either use a software based reset button - such as from SPB PocketPlus, or turn the device off (this is better), wait 10 seconds and then press the reset button.
Still no luck
I tried resetting after leaving the jasjar shut for more than 10 seconds and still I have no luck removing programs either directly or via activesync. I would still appreciate any suggestions otherwise it looks like a hard reset is unavoidable.
Thanks, a
Other way to remove programs?
Is it possible to effectively remove programs by using resco explorer? And if so, how can you ensure a clean remove?
A.
I have the same problem, I always have to remove manually. I can not install overwrite any software, and when I want to upgrade a new version, I have to find its old cab files to see the list of files to find them and delete. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.
Still no solution to removing programs
I was wondering if anyone has found a solution to our problem of not being able to remove programs.
Also, as we cannot remove programs via activesync or the standard remove programs from the pocket pc (Jasjar), what are the steps to thoroughly remove files manually?
Thanks
@apap
I found some beta WM5 apps cannot be removed even using Remove apps from the control panel or even the "delete" function from the File explorer! In the end I had to hard reset my JJ to get rid off two apps. I have also been told to use the Resco Explorer to delete programs from the directory directly.
Thanks. When you delete with Resco is it enough to remove folder with application or should you also clear things from registry?

prob uninstalling software

hey guys. i seem to be havin a wierd problem. when ever i try to uninstall a program from my exec i get a msg that it could not be completely removed. i tried to uninstall the o2 active interface and a pocket divx player and both gave the same prob. any suggestions on wat i might be doin wrong? also can u suggest sme place i can get good games for my exec
cheers
i have had this problem, nothing I could do about it, exept to manually delete the stuff, but obviously registry is still a problem.
also, it appears if you restore from a backup, then the remove programs doesnt work, something to do with the installed apps in windows directory and the registries
sorry, no help, only confirmation and acknowledgement of the problem....
Worth looking into SKTools....It properly uninstalls things where the installer fails...I have found it invaluable when trying out software that is 'not quite' WM5 compatible!
This generally works for me:
- Uninstall program.
- If it complains about being unable to uninstall, click "No" when you're asked if you want to remove from Remove Programs list.
- Now do a soft reset with a utility such as Tweaks2k2
- When pda is ready to be used, try to run Uninstall Program again.
This should work for all but the most tenacious of programs. If this still doesn't work, check if the program has a stub running in the Windows\Startup folder. Remove it, and then try the above again.
Things that work for me.
1) Do not have a shortcut on the today screen to a program you wish to un-install, remove it first from here and the Start (menu). Make sure that part of it is not started automatically in /Windows/StartUp folder, if it is delete it.
2) Do a soft reset.
3) Do not go to Start (menu) | Programs. (Do not display it's icon in anyway. See step 1 above.
4) Go at once to Start (menu) | Settings | System | Remove Programs and un-install it.
This generally works for me. Hope it helps.
i agree with dah54 and snorbaard. That usually works for me almost everytime. If it doesn't check running processes and stop the one you are trying to uninstall and then follow their instructions and if all else fails, use SKTools or something similar.

Can't remove/install programs!

Hello
Yesterday i tried to remove a program on my Qtek9000. But in the add/remove program, where
all installed programs are listed, was nothing! It was empty!
Then I tried to connect to the Computer but without success! An error Message appeared, "Can't
synchronize, please reconnect an try again!"
I can't even install a new program!
Please help me!
Geko
Turn OFF your firewalls then connect your Universal via USB again.
hmm, Doesn't work.
Any other ideas?
I am having similar problems. I have a list of installed programs in the uninstall list. However, whenever I install new softwares, they are not shown in the uninstall list, thus I cannot uninstall any new softwares. Anyone knows what happens?

...your not using phoneAlarm are you?
This is a documented issue with a previous version and is fixed in the latest release.
Matt
Yes PhoneAlarm is an issue and does prevent installed programs to show up in the list of installed programs. If you cannot live without PhoneAlarm (Like Myself) then you have two options:
You can install SKTools. The uninstallation utility in SKTools will still show the list of installed programs even if it is not shown in the generic Windows utility.
The other option involves changing the registry. You will need a registry editor like Resco. The procedure is as follows:
1) go to..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\AppInstall\
2) Select the application directory that is not showing up in the list
3) change the DWORD Role data from 40 to 24
4) Now the application will show up in the list.
Hope this works for you
Regards
srmz you are great !!!! It works and I can uninstall programs now.
I have never installed PhoneAlarm, and I forget starting from when this problem appears.
Also thanks matt1971 for rasing the possible reason leading to the problem. You guys are great !!
I now have the same problem - I can't install programs (get a message saying installation was unsuccseful), and when I try to remove programs there are none at all in the list.
All I've done today is install sbp Weather.
All programs work fine, but I also can't change Today Theme - it seems to be stuck on default.
Anyone able to help?
Cheers
Rowan
yes I have the exact same issue...this post is about not being able to sync, install, or uninstall anything....while srmz's post was informational, it didn't help those of us who has this problem...
please can anyone help? I really don't want to have to hard-reset my phone
Thanks
Anthony

Cannot install or remove programs anymore !!!

Hi all,
something strange happened to my XDA (O2 ROM v2.21.4.101):
* my "remove programs" list is now completelly empty, even if I have many programs installed and running!
* I can no longer install any new program ("exe" or "cab") - installation starts, but always ends with unsuccessful message
* active sync 4.2 no longer connects!!
Apart from this, everything seems to be in order.
Any help/hints would be mostly appreciated, trying to avoid an always painfull "hard reset"...
Thanks!
Hm, have you tried updating your ROM? That would reset your phone and update it so it should work...
But you would loose your contacts etc as you cant sync now? Hmmm

modify the registration:
HKLM\ControlPanel\AdminPassword\Group=0x1(1)
delete the key "Redirect"
Than soft restart. You'll find a "Policy" or "Stratagy" icon in the "System" page of the "Setting" window. Clear the checkbox of restriction.
Thanks for the info - unfortunatelly, I already did an hard reset to the PDA. I will keep it for future reference, though

just for the record that check box was already clear when I looked at it and it didn't do anything for me
Had to do a restore from a back up a couple weeks ago. damn it.
Mine did it after a corrupt install. SOB.
The values basically haven't changed the behavior...
Hi all,
I have copied the values exactly as they were, but still nothing happens...furthermore my ActiveSync on the MDA Vario seems not to recognise any connections, even when the phone is connected with the ActiveSync of the PC. Is there any way maybe to reinstall only the phone portion on ActiveSync in the MDA? I downloaded a file "activesync.exe" from the ftp server. is it the pocketpc portion of activesync?
Thx a lot

Completely Uninstalling programs

Sorry if there is an answer somewhere already, but I have been looking around for 20 minutes and I'm giving up and posting a thread. I have like five programs that won't uninstall when I go into the settings-->remove programs application. It comes up with a message that says "XXXX was not completely removed. Do you want to remove it from the list of installed programs?"
Has anybody had this also? How do I get it completely off my phone/get the memory back?
One more thing, I have a program called "AA AA" and I know for sure that I didn't install a cab with that name, so what the hell is it? I'm a noob with WinMo so sorry if it's simple **** haha.
Thanks in advance

For programs that say they didn't uninstall completely, the method I use to get them out is this:
1) run the cab again, the same one you used to install a/the app in the first place
2) when it gives you option or error dialogs, just click "ok" or "yes" to all of them, to allow it to go through what looks like another complete install process (yes, it's odd, but this is how to do it).
3) when it's done, soft-reset, and then you should find that there's no more trace of the app in your uninstall list.
Don't ask me how/why that works, but I've used it in many instances for just that reason, and it's worked every time I tried it.
As for that "AA AA" app, I've certainly never seen a cab that used that name (fyi, the name in the uninstall list doesn't necessarily match the name of the cab file...only if the person creating it set it up that way). So...I'd just say uninstall it, and see if any apps/links are missing then.
This thread is closest to my problem,so I'm asking here.
I cant uninstall ANY of my programs, I have tried the usual method from the remove programs section in Settings. I get same error as OP.
When that failed I then try to just delete the program folder from program files, using file explorer, but get an error saying 'Access is denied. Be certain the folder isn't in use and not write protected'
At first I thought I had a memory card problem, but its the same regardless of where the program is installed.
I also tried to re-install the programs from their cab files as described above, but get an 'unsuccessful' message.
I cant rename any files anywhere on my device either.
I know a little about write protection, but cant figure out what my problem is or how to fix it.
I hope I explained properly for someone to help.
Thanks.
It looks like that the installer process "wceload.exe" was not correctly quit and is still in the memory. Terminate the process wceload.exe with a task manager and try again.
Thanks ElectronX.
I did a search on my HD2 for the file you mentioned and couldn't find it. I have Duttys task manager installed and after a soft reset, the problem still remains. The task manager is empty of processes when I start the device.
Im sorry that Im a bit clueless to how to achieve what you suggest.
I have discovered that the problem extends beyond removing and installing programs. I cant do anything in file explorer other than open documents. If I want to move, delete, rename any file on the device I get the 'write protected' error message. I cant do it via active sync either..I connected to the computer and could browse my device, but if I tried deleting, moving or renaming, the message said it didn't have permission to do it.
Last resort is a hard reset, but hopefully someone will be able to help.
Use sktools to uninstall when windows fails. Best program ever...
Good luck
Thanks, but I cant install anything on my device...can sktools be run from my computer to fix the device?
Unfortunately not...
Good luck though..
