Web & Walk Basic Pakage - Wireless Modem - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I was thinking of getting web & walk and using my V2 as wireless modem for my laptop and only getting the basic £7.50 w&w package.
I know there are more expensive packges for this but do you think id get away with the basic package?
Thanks, Chris

Vario II - Modem Use
I have been using the Vario II on T-Mobile W&W package very well indeed. Good speeds when on 3G (incl 3.5G) when available and surfing is faster when on the laptop via modem link rather than on Vario II direct on PIE. The basic Web 7 Walk package (1 Gb @ £7.50) does not allow modem use but....

Its not so much whether or not you use it as a modem - its a question of what traffic you put through it. 1 gig per month at 3g speeds is quite a lot - if you are browsing the web or doing emails they are going to be hard pressed to work out if you are doing it from the phone or from a laptop connected to the phone. I use my connection to remotely manage computers and am often linked to my remote network through a VPN - they could detect that relatively easily by monitoring the port numbers in use - but they have not noticed yet!
Quite honestly, the only two things which are going to make them complain are excessive traffic or lost revenue - hence the 1 gig cap and ban on VOIP.

ok thanks guys for your replys, sure has answerd my queston

Wireless Modem speed

I have set up my XDA with the XDA-developers SE ROM v1.1, and setup the wireless modem exactly as per the O2 instructions - and it works - I can surf and collect e-mail on my laptop via the xda!
But it's quite slow, and WinXP reports the connection as 9.6kbps. It seems a bit faster than that, and I obviously do have a GPRS connection, but is there anything I can do to speed it up?
Many thanks in advance

Contact O2 as it should be a network issue. You must also bear in mind that many networks set priority for voice over data (for obvious reasons), and therefore you may find ridiculous speeds on GPRS during Peak Hour. Check out the speeds at night, for example, and try finding a bandwidth meter on the net. There's one that I used (I forget which one, exactly) and I've clocked my XDA at 39 kbps on one partcular occassion. However, all these vary from network to network and I find the average speeds available on my network (where GPRS is still in implementation stage) to be round about 18 - 20 kbps.

Hi,
The speed reported by XP is the interface speed. I use the Infrared port and it shows 9.6 as well.
This is not the GPRS Speed, but the IR speed.
regards,
Silver
I am seeing exactly the same results here in the US with T-Mobile. It is obviously much slower than using GPRS on the device itself. It appears as if either it is not bonding multiple channels, or somehow the IR/virtual com has restricted itself to 9600.

Basic Web & Walk file DlL Cost...?

Ive just got the basic web & walk package and going to use it as a usb modem for my laptop, I spoke to t-mobile CS and they advised if i were to download files such as mp3 I would be charged per kb
does anyone use there verio ii as a modem and also downloads files from a p2p network such as limwire/emule or ftp, will i be charged for this?
Thanks
I would advise against using P2P over your WnW connection, mostly because they probably have filters set up to spot just this kind of usage (regardless of what portranges you use) and if you used BitTorrent or similar, your connection would be RUBBISH (as you'd be constantly running through a proxy).
I've downloaded stuff and used my WnW connection with its wireless modem though, and as it just uses the phone's data connection I doubt that your usage would be flagged if it was just regular web page surfing... How could they prove that you were using it through a computer then?
Using P2P through the wireless modem connection is just asking for trouble, it's (imo) abuse of already limited network infrastructure and it reduces the quality of service for all users, that's why if you want to be able to do that (officially, and within the terms of service) you have to pay more for the privilege.
Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear
Im going away over xmas and new year and was just wondering if i were to d/l the odd mp3 here and there, its not that I want to abuse the service just thought id ask here, before I had the W&W option I visited two websites and was charged £25
maybe it's different in your country but here in the Netherlands I can use torrent files just fine with my Vario II. I even installed WmTorrent on the device itself and get data rates of 80 KBps. Thats Kilo Bytes not bits
I'm on T-mobile with unlimited dataplan

MDA Vario II & 3G Connection

Hi guys
It's been a while since I posted to the forum and I apologise if this question has already been asked.
I have an MDA Vario II with a T Mobile web&walk 3G internet connection.
My question:
My notebook PC has wireless networking, is it possible for me to wirelessly connect my notebook to the internet using the 3G connection on my MDA Vario II?
Cheers
John
Yes...
Asking a question you havn't bothered to search for isn't excused by appologising for not searching at the beggining of the question... its only marginly less anoying.
google: your question
or
google: your question site:xda-developers.com
should help you out.
Cheer up!
Who said I didn't do a search?
yep possible, but against the terms and conditions on £7.50 W&W.
you need to turn off the active sync on your laptop tho, well i had too!
allowed

I joined as a business user when I bought my MDAIII and when I upgraded to the MDA Vario 2 I managed to get the flext 20 package (£34 allowance for calls and texts) with unlimited usage and web n walk pro enabling me to use anything I want as much as I want for as long as I want and I pay £25.49 per month. I can use skype (although I rarely use the chat and never use it for actual calls as no one I know uses it anyway).
I found the rick was that they mucked things up for me so many times when I switched contracts that each time they gave me a discount. I dont think I am getting that good a deal now but at the time it wasnt bad.
I do use my MDA as a mode for my very small JVC laptop quite reguarly and its very good. I have only been unable to do it once and that was near wrexam
Um, isn't the answer to this that you can't do it using the Wifi, but you can using Bluetooth or USB.
With BT is was reasonably easy in WM5, in WM6 you need a laptop BT stack which implements BT PAN properly (mine doesn't) so I just wire them together.
USB is considerably faster - I get 850kbs in London.
As for it being against the T&Cs of basic WnW, a lot of people seem to get away with it once in a while, but hammering it with big downloads is bound to get you a slap.

Does your JVC connect to the modem in the MDAIII wirelessly?
Can you briefly explain what I need to achieve this?
Thanks
John

If wired, I understand Activesync must not be running but do I need other software & is it difficult to setup?

If you have flashed a WM6 rom it's a doddle, you just run Intenet Sharing on the handset and tell it to use USB, hit connect and it disconnects Activesync automatically and sets up a network access point on the laptop. For a minute I thought I'd accidently picked up a mac, it "just works".
In WM5 it's a right old pain, you have to set up a dial-up account for the handset, tell it to dial something (?) and run the modem program on the handset. I'd upgrade if you haven't done so already, it's one of the big pluses of WM6.

No I keep a mini usb retractable cable with me for when I need it (doubles as charger in car or home etc). Wonderful as my laptop is it doesn't have bluetooth connectivity and its as easy to wire as it would be to get a bluetooth dongle. I just found the instructions here and it works fine.

o2 data charges

hey folks quick question i pay £7.50 a month for ulimited internet and email thru o2 and was wondering if i use wifi router to connect to internet will it use the data connection or will it appear on my bill as tethered internet, there is 2 options on wifi router for me mobile web and o2 active?? i dont want to contact o2 and ask them incase they say its extra and put a note on my account anybody have any info,
much appreciated
greg
"Mobile Web" is the one you're after. I've never had a problem using it myself (so far as the billing goes), but keep in mind that if you start to take the piss (massive downloads and excessive usage) then they're likely to take notice. I've heard of anything from throttling to being told you have to upgrade to a 'heavy user' package at a higher cost.
I use mine regularly when out and about for basic stuff and there's no problems. Just don't try to use it as a primary internet connection and you should be fine.
thanks for the reply n i just wanna use it at work for surfing the forum n occasional stream i am using it just now on the mobile web setting full 3g signal so getting gr8 internet.
thanks
greg
Keep an eye on what your laptop is downloading in the background. Windows Update, AntiVirus definitions and the like can account for more data than your browsing.A third party monitor might be useful.

Accessing internet using minutes (phone line)

I was wondering if there's a way to access the internet (even if its slow) through dial up on samsung vibrant. I'm having issues with simple mobile 3g cap. I do have unlimited minutes and wanted to know if theres a way to get the internet atleast for google maps, basic search etc. This is what I want to use..
http://www.freedialup.org/site/content/view/22/27/
Simple Mobile must have completely cut you off for you to think dialup is a solution. I have T-mobile which throttles you after you reach your limit (I don't know what that limit is, I have never reached it since my life doesn't revolve around the internet).
To answer your question, no, you can't do that with your Vibrant or for that matter probably not with any modern phone. In order to connect to a dial-up ISP you need to have an analog modem, a function our Vibrants are unable to emulate.
I was able to do what you are proposing in 2001 with my Nokia 8290.
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=67
There was only 1G on your phone and it was text only WAP. The Nokia 8290 (and some other phones of that era) had built-in analog modems so you could connect to your dial-up ISP or even FAX from your laptop using your phone as a faxmodem.
I was able to send faxes and surf at the speed of a snail sleepwalking because that phone only had a 14.4k modem.
You want to do Google Maps on dial-up? Nooooooooooooooooooo!
You're going to have to get a really old phone to use it to connect to a dial-up ISP.
What about reverse tethering using USB and Broadband Internet???
