Basic Web & Walk file DlL Cost...? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Ive just got the basic web & walk package and going to use it as a usb modem for my laptop, I spoke to t-mobile CS and they advised if i were to download files such as mp3 I would be charged per kb
does anyone use there verio ii as a modem and also downloads files from a p2p network such as limwire/emule or ftp, will i be charged for this?
Thanks

I would advise against using P2P over your WnW connection, mostly because they probably have filters set up to spot just this kind of usage (regardless of what portranges you use) and if you used BitTorrent or similar, your connection would be RUBBISH (as you'd be constantly running through a proxy).
I've downloaded stuff and used my WnW connection with its wireless modem though, and as it just uses the phone's data connection I doubt that your usage would be flagged if it was just regular web page surfing... How could they prove that you were using it through a computer then?
Using P2P through the wireless modem connection is just asking for trouble, it's (imo) abuse of already limited network infrastructure and it reduces the quality of service for all users, that's why if you want to be able to do that (officially, and within the terms of service) you have to pay more for the privilege.
Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear

Im going away over xmas and new year and was just wondering if i were to d/l the odd mp3 here and there, its not that I want to abuse the service just thought id ask here, before I had the W&W option I visited two websites and was charged £25

maybe it's different in your country but here in the Netherlands I can use torrent files just fine with my Vario II. I even installed WmTorrent on the device itself and get data rates of 80 KBps. Thats Kilo Bytes not bits
I'm on T-mobile with unlimited dataplan

Laptop connect via Hermes Modem - Free?

I have an unlimited 3g media plan with cingular.. when I connect it via dialup modem to use the internet, am I still using my unlimited plan? Or am I getting charged =\
i'd check with your phone service provider but most have a "reasonable use" policy and will withdraw your "unlimited" offer if they think you're usage is unreasonably high. Streaming video or audio will probably make them unhappy. Check the details of your contract.
It's against the terms of service, but as long as you use the same settings as your plan (wap.cingular if it's MEdiaWorks or Smartphone Connect) you don't get charged. If you're supposed to be using wap.cingular and you use the (potentially) better isp.cingular you MAY get charged. If you PDA Connect or Laptop connect (the only one where 'tethering, as it's known, is acceptable in the terms of service) you can use isp.cingular or the lesser settings.
Haven't quite setup tethering on mine yet, but my wap.cingular service has been asstastic since I got the phone. Can't use mapping software like map4pda for crap because the data keeps timing out...
so im guessing its pretty easy for them to realize if youre tethering or not eh? what if youre just streaming really large video files with your pda?
Your plan is unlimited, but not-so-unlimited (refer to your Terms of Service). If they deem you to be abusing -- either on the handheld or via tethering -- they reserve the right to drop you...

Web & Walk Basic Pakage - Wireless Modem

I was thinking of getting web & walk and using my V2 as wireless modem for my laptop and only getting the basic £7.50 w&w package.
I know there are more expensive packges for this but do you think id get away with the basic package?
Thanks, Chris
Vario II - Modem Use
I have been using the Vario II on T-Mobile W&W package very well indeed. Good speeds when on 3G (incl 3.5G) when available and surfing is faster when on the laptop via modem link rather than on Vario II direct on PIE. The basic Web 7 Walk package (1 Gb @ £7.50) does not allow modem use but....
Its not so much whether or not you use it as a modem - its a question of what traffic you put through it. 1 gig per month at 3g speeds is quite a lot - if you are browsing the web or doing emails they are going to be hard pressed to work out if you are doing it from the phone or from a laptop connected to the phone. I use my connection to remotely manage computers and am often linked to my remote network through a VPN - they could detect that relatively easily by monitoring the port numbers in use - but they have not noticed yet!
Quite honestly, the only two things which are going to make them complain are excessive traffic or lost revenue - hence the 1 gig cap and ban on VOIP.

ok thanks guys for your replys, sure has answerd my queston

Cingular 8525 & Internet Sharing

Does Using the Internet Sharing Feature on the new 8525 ROM cause more charges if I have media works and unlimited internet or is that teathering?
If you tether on Media Net they will charge you for it, you are supposed to have the PDA connect plan. I heard of people getting away with it if you are just checking e-mails and such, but heavy usage is supposedly detected.
Others have also reported anything to being charged overages to just having been switched to the PDA Connect.

Sorry, you are wrong, a little. While tethering is against the Terms of Service with ALL plans except the Laptop Connect Plan, it works fine AND I have NEVER been charged in almost two years. While I agree I dont tether as I use a home DSL line, I still use my share of data. Actually I use much more data without tethering, but with a PDA that happens.
@ wpbear:
Are you just using the Media Max plan then? Might as well save myself 20 bucks a month.
Thanks for the correction
All I know is that using SlingPlayer Mobile takes the same bandwidth whether I tether it or run it on my Dopod (which is to say a lot of data gets downloaded either way).
Definitely go with the MediaMax or Smartphone Connect plan. MediaMax 200 bundle will get you 200 text messages, Smartphone Connect will get you the XpressMail push e-mail. Both are $19.99 for unlimited internet.
(I have the MediaMax 200 bundle)

Internet Sharing problem

Here's my problem. I'm trying to run uTorrent and everything is slooooow. I've noticed my IP address on my laptop as 192.168.0.102 and my external is very different. I think that is my problem, NAT or something. Is there any way to forward ports on the 8525 or to put myself into a DMZ like my home router?
I've searched and searched and maybe I'm just retarded, I suppose that could be the whole issue at hand. I also made sure that I'm logged into isp.cingular so that shouldn't be the issue at hand.
Hopefully someone can help me, thanks for the time.
Taylor.
1) Why would you want to run a torrent program over a mobile network. It would be really slow, especially compared to cable. Plus you're going to bog down the wireless network and probably end up getting your account suspended or end up with insane data charges for using so much data. I'm pretty sure it is against which ever provider's TOS you have that you can not use their network for that type of activity.
2) You have no control over port forwarding or anything of that nature. Your phone's data connection is behind your provider's "main" access point. They control the ports and how the internal addressing works.

It is..it specifically states the use of file sharing or P2P apps is not allowed... they dont even allow you to tether without a laptop connect plan..you think theyre gonna let you get away with running a torrent app for long before your account gets flagged?

Well just for the sake of information then I'll post what I tried and found out. I downloaded the 9/21/06 rom from the wiki and reflashed it so I could try Wireless Modem again instead of Internet Sharing and guess what...
Internet Sharing gives an internal IP of 192.168.0.102
Wireless Modem gives an internal IP that matches my external IP but still does not allow incoming connections.
So Internet Sharing does give the internal IP NOT my provider.
To respond about the tethering, I'm not getting the laptop connect plan because then I wouldn't be able to browse on my phone, hence negating the whole damn reason that I bought my 8525, so I can browse the internet while sitting in parking lots waiting on calls. My home cable connection costs what I pay a month for internet access on my phone you better believe I'll use it the same way.
Taylor.
PS A moderator is more than welcome to close this now as my original question has been answered by me. Thanks.

I have the same issue with the 192.168.0.102 and it sets default gateway to 192.168.0.1. This never happend with the other rom and it kills my local network because it's 192.168.0.0:255.255.255.0.
Also on the tether speed being slow! I am getting about 800-900 k, I don't call that slow and my plan is unlimited and is no longer available so I can't change anything or I loose it. I have downloaded many many gig and never flagged or cut off.
I would like to find out how to stay with the newer rom and internet sharing and just change what IP's it uses rather than change my whole network config.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Torrenting on the 8525
I just got my 8525 and I just started to try and torrent on the network. Is your unlimited data plan with AT&T\Cingular? Just curious as I was also concerned about the ramifications.

o2 data charges

hey folks quick question i pay £7.50 a month for ulimited internet and email thru o2 and was wondering if i use wifi router to connect to internet will it use the data connection or will it appear on my bill as tethered internet, there is 2 options on wifi router for me mobile web and o2 active?? i dont want to contact o2 and ask them incase they say its extra and put a note on my account anybody have any info,
much appreciated
greg
"Mobile Web" is the one you're after. I've never had a problem using it myself (so far as the billing goes), but keep in mind that if you start to take the piss (massive downloads and excessive usage) then they're likely to take notice. I've heard of anything from throttling to being told you have to upgrade to a 'heavy user' package at a higher cost.
I use mine regularly when out and about for basic stuff and there's no problems. Just don't try to use it as a primary internet connection and you should be fine.
thanks for the reply n i just wanna use it at work for surfing the forum n occasional stream i am using it just now on the mobile web setting full 3g signal so getting gr8 internet.
thanks
greg
Keep an eye on what your laptop is downloading in the background. Windows Update, AntiVirus definitions and the like can account for more data than your browsing.A third party monitor might be useful.
