My thoughts exactly.

M5000 is one of only 5 compatible handsets apparently...
Is this so?
JasJar doesn't support EDGE. Wizard does. Besides, what's the point? EDGE is a step back from UMTS. Jasjar is more advanced  .
Orange want 3G users to have an alternative when they are out of 3G coverage - which is no use if you have a Universal!

I don't think that that's the reason, are there any devices (even normal phones) supporting BOTH?
Have you read the Orange weblink I posted?
5th paragraph, 2nd line
???
anyway - whats the difference?? EDGE or UMTS
How odd
At launch, there are five 3G and EDGE-enabled handsets in the Orange portfolio - the Nokia 6280, 6630, 6680 and N70, and the SPV M5000 (developed for Orange by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC).

The Universal definatly doesn't support EDGE
well I just saved that web page for errr... future reference... we ALL know what Orange are like don't we?
spare batteries and the like, eh?

I've red it just now. That's why I was asking, now I know that new Nokias are both EDGE and UMTS(WCDMA) enabled.
Both with M5000 they're wrong.
And about the differences - good article:

i havent read the article just the posts but knowing orange itll be a disaster and cost a fortune
Any idea if/when O2 are going to enable EDGE on their network? I'm sure many XDA mini users will be keen to know considering the lack of 3G support on the mini.

I wish they'd leave all these dodgy systems alone, and concentrate on good honest 3G.
Forget EDGE, and O2, please definitely forget stupid, silly i-mode.
Why do companies think that steps back are good?
Throw all the resources into improving the 3G network.

Sorry friend, look at this extensive article from www.silicon.com
http://networks.silicon.com/mobile/0,39024665,39156108,00.htm
@belfast-biker
O2 are piloting high speed 3G with the potential of 2MB download speeds soon and upto 20MB in the future. I know O2 have been slow to roll-out 3G but I have found the performance on their network better than on Vodafone and T-mobile.

They're diluting the message with i-mode.
I like 3G, even though I only get 180-220Kbps on their network in Belfast, on a theoretical limit of 384K.
And that's after fighting them via phone and email to get the 128K limit lifted on my XDA, a limit imposed purely because I wasn't on a business tariff. Fcuking idiots wasted about an hour of my life until they relented.
Definitely not as forward looking as I'd like. And I work for them.
hey does anyone know anything about HSDPA and if the Jasjar is compatible or in the future will be?
No, the Jasjar (or any similar device such as Xda Exec, MDa Pro or Qek 9000) is not and will not ever become HSDPA capable. It simply misses the hardware for it.
Hey Wiz
I noticed you've got a TyTn, which I believe is the only phone compatible with HSDPA at the moment. Is there much of a speed difference between this and normal 3g?
Thanks
Dave
One is 384k & one is 1.6M in full speed if your network supports the full speed.
Besides Hermes, Trinity is the next device that has HSDPA.
What is the outcome of the debate if Universal supports HDSPA?

It doesn't.
anybody have links to benchmark tests of wizard vs. hermes? thinking about getting a hermes and i need to know if its really THAT much faster than the wizy.
excuse the title, im working on about 2 hours sleep
Ive got both and I must admit my wizard running crossbow (wm6) is leaving my hermes for dust! However I do feel that the roms for hermes are not on par yet with the ones for the wizard, so hopefully sometime soon there be a rom that shows the hermes for it true colours
IMO, the diff between a hermes and a wizard is something no ROM can fix:
3G
I've never surfed so fast. My search today plugin (treo lift) gives me instant google results. I can stream 96K to my A2DP headset. I don't use the $10 Hotel Internet coverage any more because my laptop can access 3G Internet speeds internet through DUN (soon to be Internet Sharing when the AKU 3.x TyTN ROM is released).
Before I had 3g coverage I missed my 8125 because it's ROM really was faster and besides, the device had almost double the battery life.
Now, I can't go back.

i agree with u 100% 1000kbit/sec on 3g COMPARED TO 96kbit/sec on edge
Hands down, the 3G data is addictive. The first time you travel with it, you won't know how you did without it before... as long as you can keep this thing juiced, you'll be happy.
Soon The WM6 will be available for Hermes...
Eagerly waiting,....
omg!!!! are you serious? so you mean that my 8125 that i got for about $100, unlocked for free, and my dog left bite marks on, with crossbow running on it is faster than the miracle machine (tytn)?
sorry for the gloating. i was really about to shell out the money to get a hermes. but now i don't think i have to.
question... 3g is embeded in hardware right? there wont be a software tweak to allow 3g on to a wizard, correct? i'm on tmobile and i love it here. only thing is internet package is $30 and its not even 3g. i refuse to go to cingular. (we've got big beef since about 1999 when they were at&t. still haven't paid those bastards. no one talks to me like that.)
thanks for the info guys.
*back to wizard subforum*
Faster is a relative term. It's screen response is faster when overclocked to 240mhz (who doesn't overclock their wizard tho?). It's connectivity is snail like by comparison. 3G is a hardware feature unfortunately.
Thanks for stopping by!
Hi
Just received my Touch Dual yesterday and the signal strength generally seems a lot poorer than my SPV C600, In fact driving down the motorway last night the phone cut off about 5 times, my old phone never did this, is it because of the 3G ? or do you think it could be a duff phone ???
Thanks in Advance
Rich
Try the same route disabling the 3g...
I've seen that in general the signal is much better than my Wizard, also when I'm out of range the Dual it's really fast in joining again the GSM network...

True Again!!!
I have DUAL about 3 weeks, brand TIM Italy with an H3G Usim and Hsdpa always on ( when avaible )... The joining to the gsm is really really fast
After the elevetor the signal go up in 2 / 3 seconds.
I flashed the 1.48 ROM yesterday, and have been mostly happy with it. It seems faster, and they've ironed out a couple of niggles, so it's an improvement in some ways, albeit not many.
I do have one MAJOR problem however. Ever since the upgrade, I can't get a HSDPA signal.
I just wondered if there's any problems with O2 (doubtful, since it's been since yesterday morning and I still can't get a signal), or if anyone else has found the same issue since the upgrade.
Thanks.
Edit:
It turns out that other guys here have been suffering with no O2 3G connection since yesterday, and I've flashed back to 1.43 and the problem still exists. I have to assume that it's O2 that's at fault here.
Edit:
I spoke to O2 the other day about this, and they did confirm that Salisbury had no 3G coverage at that time. I've come in to work this morning, and it's back to 4 bars. Now the iPhone guys can start to use my phone as a wifi router again lol.
Are you sure you didn't exceed your data volume?

I have a 3GB limit on data, so that's definitely not been exceeded.
Edit: I just checked - I've used just under 400MB.
I've got 1.48 Dutch rom and have good HSDPA signal everywhere.
Perhaps a network malfunction?

Yeah - thanks mate. I've already figured it must be that. There's a guy here who couldn't get 3G on O2 yesterday, same as me, but he said his was fine this morning, so I assumed it was my phone. Turns out he was wrong, and there's another guy who can't get 3G on O2 either.
Now I've just gotta flash 1.48 again and wait for O2 to sort out the problem.
Cheers.

I'm in Salisbury at the minute, and no-one else here on O2 has a 3G connection, so I'm happy it's not me
Where do you get the v1.48 ROM for O2??
Wanna flash mine, but can't find the ROM for O2 HD2s.

Sorry mate, but I didn't get my phone from O2 - just the SIM. Do a search for goldcard. I think that should help you, but it's not something I'm "in the know" about.
Good luck
