Very forgetful XDA IIs - Networking

I have XDA IIs and on it, have a few annoying symptoms on network connection setup.
My wifi, bluetooth and GPRS do work. I type in the necessary information (network key, user name, password, passcode), they all work.
When I remove the battery (for putting in a SIM card or just replacing it with the spare battery), these information is lost.
(1) Wifi
Network key of WPA-PSA is always lost after the battery replace. I have to put in wifi network key every time.
(2) Bluetooth
It often forgets the paring with my PC. I have a USB Bluetooth dongle on my laptop and pretty much every time, I have to start from paring, discovering "ActiveSync" service to do the syncing.
(3) GPRS
I have these working yesterday.
I just tried today and user name and password are gone from my GPRS (wap.cingular) and isp.cingular settings.
All these losing network settings is killing me.
Please help!

Try this:
Click Start --> Settings --> System Tab --> Permanent Save
Ensure that 'Connection Setting' is checked. Everything that is checked on this screen is backed up to a protected area of memory that survives a reset. When you perform a reset (by removing the battery) it will restore info from this area to main memory.
My XDAII has taken to performing a full reset whenever I take the battery out, which is most annoying as I often have to change SIM cards. I believe that you should be able to force a reset by moving the battery lock switch to the locked position with no battery in, but mine appears to be a bit too sensitive.
Hope this helps.

Alec, what ROM version are you using to get that setting? Have seen no such setting in any ROM that I've tried although I've never had problems with the wizard "forgetting" anything after taking the battery out...
EDIT: keep mixing up the names for all these devices
You're not using WM5 are you?

Wifi looses WEP key

Hi. This happened to me twice on my Dopod 900 so I'm guessing something is wrong here. I have a 128bit WEP enabled home WiFi network. The Dopod works well on this network but I was asked on two occasions to enter the WEP key again. I enter it and it works for a few days and then all of a sudden it is asked of me again... Anyone else seen this behavior? Any ways to avoid it? Thanks
You're not the only one.
The Universal loses my access points (completely disappears from the list) and wants to re-pair my Bluetooth devices (GPS and headset) (sometimes they are listed, sometimes they disappear from the list, too) every so often. I'm surprised no one else has talked about this either.
I've seen it also. If your universal seems unusually slow to connect ot the access point, you better have to stop it, or it will loose your access poitn info. After a soft reset, everything goes back to normal.
This behaviour is appening rarely though, and is not a major bug to me, as it only appens once every 100 connections. It can also depend on your access point.
I connect my o2 Exec with my own and four different customer's ADSL-router/gateway/WiFi devices and have not experienced this, even when a couple of weeks elapse between my site visits. I normally configure full WPA-PSK/TKIP encryption, MAC address restrictions and use DHCP allocated addresses. A VPN is then used to connect from the wireless side through another firewall to the internal network.
Is there any correlation between the WiFi routers that have given you all problems. I use various ZyXEL models.
Getting really strange... All of a sudden, I'm getting prompted for my Exchange password that I connect to 4Smartphone.net... It seemed to have forgotten the password?
WTF?!?
lose wep
same for me
So it is not only my ****ty non -updated sfr rom ;-)
Are you getting a NO GSM message on your boot screen and/or is your IMEI missing from the Device Information applet?
I'm trying to see if the two issues are related.
I got the NO GSM message, and from that point forward, I lost the pairing of my Bluetooth devices and the wireless access points.
My theory: Any passwords or authentications are encrypted using the IMEI of the phone portion. When the IMEI is not present (shows a blank under Device Information) due to the NO GSM issue, the Windows Mobile OS instantly wipes out those "invalid" passwords or authentications or simply invalidates them, causing you to reauthenticate the device to other devices.

I don't know if it is relevant, but in the last 10 days I've come up with the PHONE OFF display without any reason. When this happens the phonepad appears out of nowhere, instead of my carrier's logo, it says Phone Off and the 9000 freezes.
Only soft reset solves the problem No I didn't have any problems YET with the WEP keys in my wifi connections...
Should I be worried though???
I'm not getting a NO GSM message on my boot screen or my IMEI is missing not from the Device Information applet. Sorry for not being able to confirm your hunch. The only times this happened to me was when I was at an extreme edge of the WiFi coverage and signal was very low. I was flipping in & out of it and eventually the WEP key prompt popped up. Very strange. Moral of the story for the time being for me, stay near that AP... Oh by the way, its a Netgear for what its worth.
Save and Restore Wifi Settings
My understanding is if there is any problem connecting to Wifi, WM6 deletes the Wifi settings for that access point. I think my friends have come up with a quick solution to this problem. Wifi Hero is a little application you can get for $2 that saves and restores your wifi settings using standard Windows Mobile APIs. Search for "Wifi Hero" and you should find it or the direct link is http://www.wireless-apps.net/desc.php?d=d1&id=246823
The coders work for Implicit Software (www.ImplicitSoftware.com) if anyone is interested in a site licence for this tool you can contact them through their web page.
Have you guys tried going to start>settings>connections>wifi>power> and putting it at "best performance." I've heard of similar (also experienced) issues when the bar was at best battery.

Universal becomes forgetful?!

Ever since I got my Qtek 9000, a small but annoying problem has been plaguing me. I figured that switching to a different ROM such as i-mate's JASJAR would have solved it, but it seems to happen there, too...
My Universal becomes forgetful.
After a while of successfully toggling the Wi-Fi connection, it forgets all my access points/wireless routers and prompts me to connect and authenticate with their keys. I used to think it just forgot the WPA keys, but the available access points list just goes completely empty!
After a while of successfully using making calls or using the navigator, it needs to rediscover and re-pair my Bluetooth devices, such as my HS850 headset and my GlobalSat BT-338 GPS. The "paired" Bluetooth devices show up in the Bluetooth > Devices tab, but the headset icon never activates in the Phone applet, nor does the headset activate Voice Command. Also, when I launch my GPS software, I get a tone and a notification pops up asking me if I want to add the Bluetooth GPS device to my list.
After a while of successfully ActiveSync'ing with the 4Smartphone.net Exchange Server, it forgets the password and prompts me for it. This is just starting to happen now. I have the settings saved in a .CPF file I received from 4Smartphone.net, but why its starting to forget even this is starting to concern me.
Is anyone else having these issues, or is it just me? Am I going MAD?!
I have found that if you need to reset when certain processes are running (eg Messaging) data does get lost. I wonder if this explains your issue. PS - I have not suffered the BT issue you describe and I use 2 BT headsets.
configure ur device (add ur access points, bond ur bluetooth devices...etc.) and do a clean soft reset using psShutXP or anyother software based soft reset....
after the reset, is it all gone?
S
(i'm guessing the problem is, the device crashes and hasnt written ur customizations onto the flash disk...if this doesnt work too, u might have to try another rom! )
Dreamtheater is right.
Remember that the WM5 keeps a certain amount of data in a cache in volatile RAM. If you reset your device without this data being written to the non-volatile flash, it will be lost.
This is usually recognisable if you reset the device soon after copying a file, or receiving an email or SMS. The file/sms/email will have disappeared.
The WM5 dev blog has said that there are a few ways around this:
1. Turn the WM5 device off for a few seconds (5-10 seconds should be enough) before you reset. The operating system will write any data in volatile memory to the non-volatile flash.
2. Any application that programmatically soft-resets the device with the correct commands will force the write-to-memory to occur as well.
So try to set up your device, sync, and then TURN IT OFF for a bit, before you do a reset. If in doubt, TURN IT OFF!

Atom problems - WiFi, ActiveSync, Hang, Drops

I dumped my three year old Sony Ericsson P800 for a sleek, chic O2 XDA Atom in March 2006.
It was a dream device and I enjoyed discovering myriad of features as this was my first PPC. My main usage is as a highly used phone (more than 6 hours per day on long conference calls) and PIM applications (calendar, contacts etc). I hardly play games, I only have Scrabble loaded. O2 Plus is my today plugin, I don't use any other. I have a 0.5 GB miniSD card on which I load podcasts or videos, though I watch rarely.
I started facing a number of problems that I haven't been able to solve:
1) If I set up the SETTINGS > SYSTEM > POWER > ADVANCED > ON BATTERY POWER TURN OFF DEVICE IF NOT USED FOR 2 MINUTES; it is supposed to turn off the screen. If a call or SMS comes it is supposed to come alive.
This never worked for me. Invariably the screen would fail to come back alive and I'd need to poke with stylus to Soft-Reset the device. As a result my screen was always on. Expectedly battery life was very very low. This is my biggest grouse.
2) The WiFi stopped working one day in July. It used to work very well and I was using Agile Messenger with my home network for few months. That day, it just crashed as I turned it on WiFi and surfed for sometime. The screen turned kind of white and a mix of colors. I tried a lot of things after that including flashing the May ROM, old ROM and so on. No avail. Nowadays if I turn WiFi on it may work for sometime. I may even be able to connect to O2-Connect or the web. But crash it will. And after that the WiFi option also sometimes disappears from the Wireless Manager. It reappears after a number of reboots. Practically WiFi has become unavailable.
3) Browsing using pass-through with ActiveSync using the Internet connection on laptop never worked for me. Tried many tweaks but never got it working.
4) 2 and 3 above mean I have no working Internet connection on my Atom. I used GSM dial-up networking through my ISP account. But it is so damn expensive. Haven't tried out GPRS yet (no idea how well Airtel's Mobile Office GPRS in Bangalore India will work with Atom).
5) Recently, I have been experiencing silence on my phone during calls where I can't hear the other people talking whereas they can hear me. I tested dialing into same conference with Atom and another Nokia set. On the Nokia there weren't any silences while my Atom had multiple silences of couple of minutes each. This has made my Atom practically useless for the phone function.
I'd be very happy to try out any suggestions that you may have. Before I totally give up on it.

Wi-fi Shut-off when we do the first activesync.
I tried closing all programs by going to settings => memory => running programs => close all.
After that I did the soft reset and started the process "Start => Settings => Connections => WiFi Utility => Menu => Turn on WiFi.
Menu => Jump to Network Cards 3. Under Wireless, select your desired network. (If your network is hidden, kindly tap on "Add New")
Enter your network name (if needed), proceed to Network Key.
Select your Authentication, Data Encryption type and your Network key.
Proceed to 802.1x if needed (it is usually disabled)
Tap on Ok, go to Network Adapters => O2 Wi-Fi Wireless Adapter
Configure your IP and Name Server if needed. (If your network allows automatic assign, you might want to exclude this portion)
Tap on Ok, Ok. Proceed to WiFi Status, check if the status is Connected and IP Address is obtained.
Kindly try to use Internet Explorer to surf the internet"
and started the Wi-fi but it would not go on it showed Wi-fi off instead of the routine radio off.
When if went to Wi-fi => about. It showed Driver: Wi-fi not enabled, Firmware Version: Wi-fi not enabled, MAC Address: Wi-fi not enabled.
I tried the hard reset also yet the Wi-fi would not turn on.
So I reinstalled latest version 20060426-mot0822 of the Atom and before I did activesync I ran the Wi-fi and it worked well . After the first Activesync the same problem started.
For Activesync I am using the new version 4.5.0, Build 5059, Beta taken from the Microsoft site where it has the facility to keep on the Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop yet the Wi-fi switches off.
There seems to be a problem with you software and your technical department needs to study it deeply and provide a suitable solution for it

PIE PocketPC 2002 problem

I had to reinstall my O2 XDA (PW10A1, ROM 3.17.03 ENG, 4.21 radio, ActiveSync 4.2.0, build 4876) via a hard reset. Nearly everything works OK, except Pocket Internet Explorer (PIE).
I see a flash of the turning globe, when I try to put a web address in the address bar. No GPRS connection is made automatically by PIE. I have to establish the GPRS connection separately. When I’ve done that, only the local files are shown, i.e. file://\windows\default.com. Just http://localhost shows the turning globe for 5 seconds. All other sites selected from the drop down box do not show up in the address bar and do not connect.
I tried GSM modem connection to my ISP. It works for sending and receiving email, not for PIE.
Using GPRS I can send and receive email.
Using GPRS: I tried VNC and I can connect to my PC’s at home.
Using GPRS I can ping to a number of websites like www.cisco.com using PacketLANce.
I looked for other browsers. MuliIE is an extension to PIE, does not replace it.
The same for ftxPBrowser.
ThunderhawkII needs a subscription. I could use it reading the different introduction pages and registering with them.
AvantGo gives login problems. I don’t know whether they are related to the PIE problem.
My internet connection uses +0~GPRSinternet, does not use proxy settings and has “This network connects to the internet” enabled. It uses server assigned IP addresses and DNS’s; access point name is “internet”. GPRS authentication is CHAP. The three network adapters have no IP or DNS’s assigned.
I did the auto-configuration for O2-NL again.
So I suspect the iexplore.exe file (in the Windows directory, 17494 bytes, 21-06-2001 08:40) went broke. I have nowhere a replacement copy. I think the file is part of the ROM, bacuse I cannot copy the ieplore.exe to somewhere else. So it could not really been changed by some action of mine. Could it be other settings in the XDA, which are causing this?
My questions:
Do you read from the information above that it is a PIE file problem or belonging settings?
Could you send me a copy of the original iexplore.exe?
If not what could be wrong?
What would you do to solve it?
Thanks in advance.

Same Problem
Hi franz
i have exactly the same problem. i can send emails over wlan or gprs, i can ping, but i am not able to open webpages in pocket ie. i have a prophet (s200) with the newest qtek rom (2.20) wwe.
This is probably a stupid question, but what do you have under:
Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network selection
First list, 'Programs that connect to the internet...'?
It is possible that your GPRS connection is under say, 'WAP network' or something while in the list 'My ISP' is selected by default so PIE just doesn't know you have a GPRS connection.
Try playing with those settings and see what happens. Since you just did a hard reset it is not possible that you iexplorer.exe file will be corrupt.
I'm having what seems to be the same problem with my Wallaby (specs same as Franz01, was also originally an O2 XDA NL, now taken over by Telfort and now connecting via Telfort Spot GPRS/Edge). Symptoms exactly as described by Franz01 (only local files, just a quick flash of turning globe), although I haven't tried all the connections Franz01 tried, but mail and 'phone work fine. Now I have found one way to fix the problem: a hard reset (perhaps a tip for Franz01?). However this is extremely inconvenient as I then have to spend about a day restoring data, resetting all sorts of configurations etc., and then do it all over again when whatever it is happens again about a month later.
The trouble started after Telfort started migrating to the KPN network (although the network functions themselves work fine), and after an occurrence of what I call the "battery-memory incident". This is when the device suddenly and unexpectedly signals that the main battery is low, and all sorts of things suddenly become slow, very much as if the memory, not the battery was low. The memory applet also suddenly shows hardly any memory available. This condition is fixed by performing a soft reset while connected to the mains charger, but the PIE problem then remains as a sort of "residue". My darling Wallaby has had these "battery-memory incidents" as long as I've had it (since 2002), but the "residue" PIE problem dates from the Telfort move. I went to the Telfort shop in Amsterdam and spoke to their resident "XDA guru" but the hard reset was the only solution he could find.
To avoid having to go down the hard reset path, with all the work this entails, I would love to find another fix. Like Franz01 I'm convinced it's something like a corrupt file or a registry setting, something that a hard reset just happens to fix, but which could be fixed without the hard reset if I only knew what it was.
Levenum, I'm afraid I lose you at Settings->Connections->Connections, I don't get an Advanced tab or button. I get 3 drop-down lists with buttons Modify and Connect, pertaining to "...automatically connect to the Internet...", "...automatically connect to Work..." and "...My Network Card connects to...". For the first two, Telfort Spot is selected, and this connection works. The third one says "Work" and this reverts if I try to change it. Gurus always look at these settings first, and then conclude that they are fine. But I don't get a list of "Programs that connect to the Internet".
Anyway it helps to know that there are others in the world with this very same problem! I'd still love to fix it though.
Resolved!
Three cheers for Oliver (from 19 Nov 2002) on:
http://groups.google.nl/group/micro...01aad387fc9/a703963fe92a23a2#a703963fe92a23a2
This fixed the problem, without a hard reset!
To be sure you get it, I reproduce his solution here, hoping he won't mind (permission has been asked for, though his original answer is bout 5 years old).
"Hi,
check if you have those two files in the root of your "My device":
CMMapG, CMMapP. If they are not there run "\Windows\welcome.exe" which
will recreate them (amongst other things). This solved it for me.
Cheers,
Oliver"
Welcome.exe "walked" me through aligning the screen, cutting and pasting; afterwards the two files mentioned had been created and PIE worked again.

Turn off Data Connection when idle

I'd like my phone to use the data connection to download weather info etc., but I'd also like it to turn it off when idle to save power. Is there an app to do this?
thanks
Click on the 3G icon on the top bar, then when the notification screen opens click on the 3G icon again, that opens the Comm Mgr screen, turn off the data connection.
OR, are you wanting an app that will do it automatically after XX min?
It should automatically disconnect after usage. I find my data connection active for like 23 hours and such. Big battery hog when it isn't even being used.
On my Fuze, there was a registry edit which would set your END key to disconnect a data connection while on the homescreen in the default position. Worked really well except it doesn't work on my new AT&T Pure for some reason.
A single tap would work exactly like the END key currently does. Pretty nice.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\Phone]
"Flags2"=dword:0000000A
Flags2: "Enables a disconnect button for GPRS connections to appear in the connectivity list. Also enables End key to disconnect GPRS."
[EDIT]
Actually it may still work. I just found that further down in my app.reg of my Custom folder, I had it set again, to 16.
[EDIT2]
Yup. Changing the value to A (A=10) works like a champ. It doesn't affect any normal End key functions either.
Alternatively, if you have TD2 Tools (which you should, great program), then under the Power tab, there is an option to 'Auto D/C Data Connection'. At least there is in 2a, v 2.0.3552.42948.
Yes, I want an app to disconnect the data connection after a few mins/secs. It should save power.
I will try the TD2 tools, I already had it but never thought about looking if it had this option built in.
Thanks to you all!
EDIT: It worked, it disconnects after a few minutes now. Does anybody know how to disable wake device when receiving SMS? The option is turned off, but still the device wakes itself.

I personally prefer the reg tweak, however I don't understand the content of your EDIT note: "changing WHAT to 16"?? and your EDIT2 note : "changing the value to A" is in hex or dec? And do you mean that pressing the END hardware key will disconnect data connection now?
Hi
The data connection being on does not drain the battery. You have a network connection to the cell all the time otherwise you wouldn't receive phone calls, the data connection symbol just means your phone also has an IP address, that doesn't take any power.
If anything the connection remaining on saves power as each time you need a connection one doesn't have be created. Creating a connection uses more CPU cycles and radio power talking to the cell to open a network connection and then more to drop it.
The network operators also want the connection to remain on as it is less load on their networks than having them continually created then dropped.
More info here: http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/07/14/666203.aspx

you just need to modify these two entries (was written here many times)
Hkey_local_machine\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings
1. Change in CacheTime DWORD Data to 15 (Base is Dec value)
2. Change in SuspendResume the value to GPRS_bye_if_device_off
Make a soft reset.
The data connection should turn off after 15 sec if idle. It should also turn
off after you press the red key, or turn off the screen.
Try it.
Both solutions (reg mod and TD2 Tools) work most of the time, they are in fact the same. However I noticed 2 curious behaviours in which the timeout is not respected.
1) When I update weather via DataConnection, it does not autodisconnect after the preset time...it will when device goes in standby mode.
2) Data Connection stays on until Opera is open (even if not used).Once closed, timeout starts, and it's not that bad after all.
Can anyone confirm?
I used the TD2 tools, and i'm not experiencing these issues.

This is good advice. Has anyone every experienced more battery drain if the the data connection is "left open"?
In any case, even if you "disconnect" data every time, if an app wants to access the internet, doesn't wm reconnect automatically again? (unless you use modaco "nodata" app or similar to inhibit it)
Didn't notice more battery drain with a data connection left open and you're right: if an app needs connection then it will automatically be opened. In my case I want auto disconnect because, even though I have 400 monthly prepaid connection hours, which is enormous for a phone, it annoys me to waste them while topaz is in my pocket.
Wow, thaks for the great tip Phil!
I have a prepaid 150MB limit, so it shouldn't bother me leaving it on. The 400 monthly hours sualc mentioned is indeed more of a problem.

The problem mentioned above, about auto-disconnecting when programs are being used... this is why I program my reg edit to manual disconnect.
@BumAround: Set the value to "0000000A" (which is hex). "16" was my default value, which was also Hex.
This will do 2 things. It creates a "Disconnect" button from the PopUp Connection window and also allows the END key to disconnect only while at the Today screen in it's default position.
For example, if you are browsing Opera and press the END key... it will only take you back to the Today screen and won't touch your data connection. If your at the default position (the Clock tab on both Manila and Titanium), pressing END again will stop the data transmission.
It is a very good solution to the OP's problem by allowing you to disconnect the data connection easily, at will, and without the need for extra programs.

Hi Sualc, the same "problem" for me updating weather (using option for data connection inTD2 Tools)
Not sure

Not sure about this... and forgive me if I shouldn't be commenting because I'm referencing a cdma HTC touch pro 2, but I think this aspect is common.
My understanding is that the arrows up in the status bar should show white when a data connection is active and transferring data, but should turn gray when the connection is connected but not actively transmitting data. On my TP2, the data connection always shows the connection active and transmitting (the arrows stay white and never turn gray). I'm thinking if this is happening, one must surely be eating battery that isn't necessary.
On a cdma phone, the GPRS registry setting that is mentioned in this thread won't work because, although it will make the data connection automatically disconnect after an active data session, and you can change how long that time is with the CacheTime registry setting, unfortunately, on my HTC touch pro 2 Sprint cdma phone, you can't answer incoming calls when a data connection is active using these settings. I have to change the GPRS setting to #777 instead to be able to answer incoming calls when a data connection is active.... and with the #777 registry setting, I then loose the automatic time out and turning off of the data connection, so it stays on and showing active unless I turn it off manually and even then it comes on by it's self so often it's not even worth turning it off manually.
If any of you tech wizards can find a way for me to both be able to answer incoming calls when the is an active data connection, and also have the data connection time out and turn off automatically when not being used, I'd love to see it, because it sure seems to me I use more battery when I'm not turning off my data connection a lot manually, but it gets old always having to turn it off too!
