PIE PocketPC 2002 problem - Networking

I had to reinstall my O2 XDA (PW10A1, ROM 3.17.03 ENG, 4.21 radio, ActiveSync 4.2.0, build 4876) via a hard reset. Nearly everything works OK, except Pocket Internet Explorer (PIE).
I see a flash of the turning globe, when I try to put a web address in the address bar. No GPRS connection is made automatically by PIE. I have to establish the GPRS connection separately. When I’ve done that, only the local files are shown, i.e. file://\windows\default.com. Just http://localhost shows the turning globe for 5 seconds. All other sites selected from the drop down box do not show up in the address bar and do not connect.
I tried GSM modem connection to my ISP. It works for sending and receiving email, not for PIE.
Using GPRS I can send and receive email.
Using GPRS: I tried VNC and I can connect to my PC’s at home.
Using GPRS I can ping to a number of websites like www.cisco.com using PacketLANce.
I looked for other browsers. MuliIE is an extension to PIE, does not replace it.
The same for ftxPBrowser.
ThunderhawkII needs a subscription. I could use it reading the different introduction pages and registering with them.
AvantGo gives login problems. I don’t know whether they are related to the PIE problem.
My internet connection uses +0~GPRSinternet, does not use proxy settings and has “This network connects to the internet” enabled. It uses server assigned IP addresses and DNS’s; access point name is “internet”. GPRS authentication is CHAP. The three network adapters have no IP or DNS’s assigned.
I did the auto-configuration for O2-NL again.
So I suspect the iexplore.exe file (in the Windows directory, 17494 bytes, 21-06-2001 08:40) went broke. I have nowhere a replacement copy. I think the file is part of the ROM, bacuse I cannot copy the ieplore.exe to somewhere else. So it could not really been changed by some action of mine. Could it be other settings in the XDA, which are causing this?
My questions:
Do you read from the information above that it is a PIE file problem or belonging settings?
Could you send me a copy of the original iexplore.exe?
If not what could be wrong?
What would you do to solve it?
Thanks in advance.

Same Problem
Hi franz
i have exactly the same problem. i can send emails over wlan or gprs, i can ping, but i am not able to open webpages in pocket ie. i have a prophet (s200) with the newest qtek rom (2.20) wwe.

This is probably a stupid question, but what do you have under:
Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network selection
First list, 'Programs that connect to the internet...'?
It is possible that your GPRS connection is under say, 'WAP network' or something while in the list 'My ISP' is selected by default so PIE just doesn't know you have a GPRS connection.
Try playing with those settings and see what happens. Since you just did a hard reset it is not possible that you iexplorer.exe file will be corrupt.

I'm having what seems to be the same problem with my Wallaby (specs same as Franz01, was also originally an O2 XDA NL, now taken over by Telfort and now connecting via Telfort Spot GPRS/Edge). Symptoms exactly as described by Franz01 (only local files, just a quick flash of turning globe), although I haven't tried all the connections Franz01 tried, but mail and 'phone work fine. Now I have found one way to fix the problem: a hard reset (perhaps a tip for Franz01?). However this is extremely inconvenient as I then have to spend about a day restoring data, resetting all sorts of configurations etc., and then do it all over again when whatever it is happens again about a month later.
The trouble started after Telfort started migrating to the KPN network (although the network functions themselves work fine), and after an occurrence of what I call the "battery-memory incident". This is when the device suddenly and unexpectedly signals that the main battery is low, and all sorts of things suddenly become slow, very much as if the memory, not the battery was low. The memory applet also suddenly shows hardly any memory available. This condition is fixed by performing a soft reset while connected to the mains charger, but the PIE problem then remains as a sort of "residue". My darling Wallaby has had these "battery-memory incidents" as long as I've had it (since 2002), but the "residue" PIE problem dates from the Telfort move. I went to the Telfort shop in Amsterdam and spoke to their resident "XDA guru" but the hard reset was the only solution he could find.
To avoid having to go down the hard reset path, with all the work this entails, I would love to find another fix. Like Franz01 I'm convinced it's something like a corrupt file or a registry setting, something that a hard reset just happens to fix, but which could be fixed without the hard reset if I only knew what it was.
Levenum, I'm afraid I lose you at Settings->Connections->Connections, I don't get an Advanced tab or button. I get 3 drop-down lists with buttons Modify and Connect, pertaining to "...automatically connect to the Internet...", "...automatically connect to Work..." and "...My Network Card connects to...". For the first two, Telfort Spot is selected, and this connection works. The third one says "Work" and this reverts if I try to change it. Gurus always look at these settings first, and then conclude that they are fine. But I don't get a list of "Programs that connect to the Internet".
Anyway it helps to know that there are others in the world with this very same problem! I'd still love to fix it though.

Resolved!
Three cheers for Oliver (from 19 Nov 2002) on:
http://groups.google.nl/group/micro...01aad387fc9/a703963fe92a23a2#a703963fe92a23a2
This fixed the problem, without a hard reset!
To be sure you get it, I reproduce his solution here, hoping he won't mind (permission has been asked for, though his original answer is bout 5 years old).
"Hi,
check if you have those two files in the root of your "My device":
CMMapG, CMMapP. If they are not there run "\Windows\welcome.exe" which
will recreate them (amongst other things). This solved it for me.
Cheers,
Oliver"
Welcome.exe "walked" me through aligning the screen, cutting and pasting; afterwards the two files mentioned had been created and PIE worked again.

Internet via the Cradle?

Ok folks,
Mabe I've missed something over the last year I've played with this XDA. I've never actually tried to use the PDA to get to the Internet while it is in the cradle, that was until today I decided to load up a weather program to play with.
Short of it was that the program could not connect to the internet via the cradle. 1st I'm thinking that maybe it was not suppose to do that, but then I searched the forums here for the last two hours and read a ton of messages, but nothing came close to what I'm wanting. Some basic info is as follows:
ROM A30.09 ENG (which seems old, but that's for another topic)
RS A.33.02
Protocol 1.3.3
O/S WM2003 (ver 4.20 build 13349)
Under Settings -> Connections Tab ->Connections Currently set to "My Work Network" (I chose this manually a little while ago, ws GPRS Connection)
Proxy Settings - Not check-marked, not configured (I think here is where my problem may lie, not sure though what to check-mark/populate with)
VPN - Blank
Modem - Blank
Anyhow, this is what I've got. Anyone have an idea or/post specific to what I'm trying to achieve, that would be great for that info.
Thanks
Greech...
I think you need to select "this network connects to internet".
Then, you need to ensure internet pass through is enabled on active sync i.e. go to "Tools" ---> "Options" ---> Rules tab and ensure connection reads internet.
Cheers.
I do have the first check-mark (This network connects to teh Internet) checked. I've both checked and unclhecks the second box (Dealing with Proxy server, and added an IP address of my local PC however, that seemed silly when I though about it) but no luck. :?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Greech
Actually, scratch all that. I went back thorugh, unchecked, saved, then RE_checked everything, and now it is working. Thanks for the suggestions.

PC, WiFi, PPC, IP solution?

OK so after having problems connecting my XDA2s to my laptop via wifi to use it's ADSL connection, I began to realise it was a major issue for a lot of users.
Having covered almost all the threads here regarding PPC WiFi issues, I still am perplexed as to how the whole thing is successfully set up.
I concluded that it was virtually impossible; that the PC would not provide the PPC with an IP address so I would have to use some sort of application to manage the connection. However, yesterday for some reason only the omnipotent holy deities of the grandiose gods of WiFi would know, I had it working perfectly. For about 10 minutes, until I decided to disconnect to see if I could readily re-connect. My hopes were of course, dashed, and I have not had it working again since.
I have tried every combination of settings on both the laptop and the XDA to no avail, and have followed more threads and links than I can count on my fingers and toes. I've tried all the same settings I had when it was working (briefly) but still have no real success.
So basically, what's the deal with getting this damn thing working? Maybe what I need is a step by step idiot's guide on how to initially set up the wireless network on the laptop first, to make sure it has all the right settings? I'm using a Vaio running XP home (built in WiFi).
Has anyone completely resolved this problem yet? I would really like a solid, clean method of setting up the connection rather than stumbling through a million different combinations of settings and ending up with something hashed and unstable.
Many thanks for any help on this, I'm sure it's a tiresome subject for many.
......And as is always the case, as soon as you post about it you figure it out!
If anyone is still having trouble using their XDA2 to connect to a PC's ADSL via WiFi, ive got it figured!
RE: ive got it figured!
PLEASE HOW? I HAVE ALSO THE SAME PROBLEM HERE
THANKS
Me too. I have a XDA mini S.
I don't know what settings to put into the thing. I had it connected for a short while but when I went into internet explorer it started connecting to GPRS instead of WIFI to internet.
Clearly I haven't got a clue. The book is of no help either.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Think i'm connected to the internet. It doesm't seem to want a password although one is listed listed in the router. Just can't stop it going over GPRS instead of the wifi for intenet????
problem solved
Hi All
Ok heres what I did .
Connections
under my work network
set ,set up my proxy server to "this network connects to the Internet.
Then go to advanced
Under select networrks ,Network management,Set both to "my work network"
Network Card
Network adapters
"My network card connects to work
Then select the network card ie sandisk
tick Use specific ip address
type in 1 thats on your network ,It will connect but you wont be able to browse still
Then soft reboot
change from use ip adress to "server assigned ip address"
soft reboot
and bingo

WiFi, GPRS & MMS Issues, Cingular 8125 on T-Mobile

I have a Cingular 8125 and I love it, well, if I can get WiFi and the rest of the connectivity to work with my T-Mobile US account. The phone is unlocked.
I had everything working, except for WiFi. This is what I experience, I turn on WiFi, the device gets an IP, but when trying to connect with PocketIE, it just hangs and I get a time out or could not connect error.
Has anyone experienced these problems? I thought it was a one time issue and hard reset the device, and now I can't connect to anything, except to make calls. All data services seem jacked.
Any advice on how to fix this? Should I go with another ROM? If so, whats the best one out there?
Also, am I suppose to be able to use Pocket IE when I'm connected to my laptop via the USB?
Thanks,
Danny
i tried out the 8125's ext rom and its basicly making your device connect only through cingular settings. I couldn't get internet access through wifi. Not even Pocket msn, cuz they restricted it with a proxy. What i suggest is you hard reset your device, then when you finish with the intro crap ( align screen, cut & paste, set password) simply soft reset your device and there you go, you know have a Unbranded Wiza100 !!
Go into start/settings/connections tab/connections, under "mediaNet" select "setup my proxy server". Uncheck the box that says "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet."
Hope this solves your problem.
That does it... but with T-Mobile... I need to use a proxy... is there a way around this? I would like to use the proxy...
I can get it to work when removing the proxy... however, if I have the WiFi on and proxy setting on... it won't work. And if I have proxy setting and wifi off, then GPRS doesn't connect.
Any Advise?
try this out. these are the tmobile settings off the clubimate site. they might be out dated but give it a shot. Also don' tthink theres no solution cuz the wizards coming out on tmobile at the end of this month
For some reason, when I install that cab (by copying it to the device and tapping on it), It doesn't seem to do anything. What am I suppose to see after the installation? It doesn't do anything...

Does wifi turn on? (Does the left LED blink like it does when wifi is turned on?)
If not, then it could be related to a cingular cab - did you install any of the cabs from the original cingular extended rom?
left led does blink.
ive also gotten as far as picking up a network.
i have tried everything, i cannot get my wifi to work at all. i dont know whats up.
the settings i needed (which i replicated for the new rom) on the old rom, was this
I would select networks, MY work network, this connects to the internet.
then in the WLAN adapter i had to manual enter my dns servers.
thats pretty much it to get it to work, but now with this rom it wont
Similar or different problem? Not sure. PARTLY SOLVED!

Hi NG,
I updated my O2 XDA mini s (German) from OS 1.3.4.2 to 2.16.9.1. (Radio 02.07.10 included). To be honest, I was never really happy with the quality and reliabilty of the radio. 4 out of 5 times it did work, but once in a while, especially while roaming, it gave me a headache. After unlocking and updating to the new version, WLAN looks to be working quite well, at least for connecting to access points, but it seems that it can't browse external websites. VXutils give back a socket error trying to access external (outside my home network) websites/Email.
Internal (inside my home network) connections work like a charm. Termincal Services client accesses my Win2003 Server no problem and I can also connect to a website hosted on my internal server. (http://servername:port).
Whenever I try to connect to external sources, the browser stops afer not successfully "locating" the respective server. On the other hand locating might not be the problem. Performing a ping to an external site with VXutils properly picks up the right ip address but cannot send/receive ping!
GPRS works as supposed. Can connect to sites with no problem.
May be somebody experiences the same problem or, even better, has a solution.
By the way I used @Work for all possible settings. The work profile is set up for both connection types.
Besides that, the new rom is really nice
EDIT Well after some time playing around, I have solved the problem or better the problem partly disapeared. In 'Settings' 'Network Adapters' I switched from Use server-assigned IP address to manual and entered IP, DNS, Gateway, etc. With these settings it everything worked after a soft-reset. Going back to DHCP and soft-reset, it first worked an now it doesn't anymore. At least there is a work around and I'm trying now some other things. All machines currently work with the DHCP settings correct. I will check and keep you updated if the problems comes from Server settings or from something in the PDA EDIT

i get as far as NETWORKS being detected. when i select one of the 3 that i pick up, i cannot connect. My own, pops up, and i get as far as entering the network key, then it tries to connect and doesnt.

Danrw. Concerning the registry settings, after patching the os I did change the registry settings. One already existed with the right value as shown in the 802.11g thread. The other one, DotG, I added.
After that, it did pick up a only G router!
As far as setting DNS manually. It is not enough to just cange the dns setting. You have to enter all the information and even after a soft-reset it takes some time to have the settings picked up... Use vxUTIL 'Info'-Screen to check the current settings. I did test wlan before and after applying packages from the extended rom. No change on reliability or performance on WLAN IMHO.
As far as I understand. Your problem is actually connecting to the router/Access Point. For testing please disable all security on your router and do a soft-reset before trying to access. Also since we have heard of several problems with model 9100 not realizing if an access point is available or not. Also change the SSID of your router and if possible the MAC Address of the router.
Don't forget to soft-reset and first try SDIO Adapter inyour pda with auto IP/DNS/etc. settings.
Another thought. Embarassing, but once I messed around with trying to get a new pda online and forgot to disable the mac filter settings in the router, which resulted in being able to see the active router but it didn't let me connect. After those two days I was missing a lot of hair.
Good luck

I did but only the minimum. I trimmed down their install to the basics. I narrowed it down to one of two CABs. Either the gprsstall or EnableEONS. I didn't install either of those and I"m now back up and running. Of course, I still can't get it to prefer WiFi to EDGE.
I had experienced the same problem with home wifi network after upgrading my rom. I saw in my laptop that the key was set to 2. I went to the network cards, clicked on my wifi network, and under Network Key swithed the value from 1 to 2. I can now connect to my wifi network at home.

I do not know if my solution will work for you because I upgraded my rom to 2.16 but lets give it a try. I use d-link DI-524 wifi router. Start menu > Settings > Connections (tab) > Network Cards [I must admit earlier today when I was trying to connect my k-jam to the wifi, I did get as far as it asking me for my authentication code and afterwards it timed-out] --> select your wifi network [at this moment as I'm trying this out my wifi on my k-jam is off] --> Network Key (tab) > it was the key index that I had to change from 1 to 2. Before doing this though, go to your router's wireless configuration page through your webbrowser and make sure the keyX (it looks for d-link this can be from key1 to key4 or at least on mine) and make sure the key index you select on your mda is the same number that is used on your router for code authentication.
Also I noticed after resetting my k-jam that I could get connected to my wifi but I could not surf, in wifi setting on my k-jam I had to hit renew ip and then I was able to surf.
I hope this works for you. Good luck and many late nights.
no luck with this for me
even tried removing wep all together. tried multiple routers.
i can detect the ssid's, but i cant connect to them. times out on the connect.
Mine worked no problem...you may already have had this suggestion but here was my process.
Unlocked with lokwiz
Upgraded
Reset before extended ROM apps installed
Installed total commander
deleted extended ROM
Upgraded again
i re-installed the CINGULAR ROM and WiFi works like a charm
......any clues?
Here's what I ended up finding out for mine. First, at the time I wrote this, I was running the 2.16 ROM. Now I'm running the 2.17, but the fix is the same with either.
Don't load the cingular add-ins GPRSSTALL or EONS. I narrowed it down to those two that were causing the issue. So, the only ones I install now are CingularMMSAccount, EdgeIcon, TimeStyle, WiFiRate4, and SmartDialingEnable. Thats it, and its all I've seen to be necessary from Cingular's little bundle 'o fun. Everything else I haven't found interferes with my ability to use the phone at all.
Hope this helps...

Wi-Fi connectivity issues

I am experiencing a couple of annoying issues with my new HTC HD2. Most of which seems to have coincided with my old O2 number being ported over to T-Mobile. Prior to this I had a temporary number and all settings seemed to work ok (although frankly I cannot recall to be sure). Once the number was ported everything went a bit mental, I could not connect to any internet app via Wi-Fi and various searches boiled this down to an erroneous proxy server setting which once removed resolved my problem. I also had an email issue which I partially resolved by deleting my account and setting it up again from scratch. The two issues I am now left with are a bit odd.
When connected via Wi-Fi neither ie6 nor email will connect - it seems to be that neither of these applications will fallback to wi-fi if there is no mobile coverage/connectivity. To clarify, I have deliberately turned my phone radio off to test it purely with wi-fi - with both apps I get the "cannot connect" message where it prompts me to check that mobile service is available and I am not in flight mode etc. So clearly it is not willing to use wi-fi even though it is connected and I can use Opera with no issues - this does not seem to impact any other application. I wonder if there is a registry issue that is stopping them from using wifi.
I can get round this temporarily if I go into settings>all settings>connections>connections>advanced>select networks and then change "programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" from "T-mobile Internet" to "My Work Network" however this only reverses the issue i.e. they then work with wi-fi but not on mobile internet (with the added issue that all other internet apps will no longer working on mobile internet) - so this is hardly a satisfactory resolution.
I have had a bash with various other settings but nothing seems to work - has anyone else experienced this issue?
is the option "the internet"available? that would make the app use whatever connection is available to the phone.
as far as the number being ported starting this I'd be tempted to backup and hard reset.let the phone pick up the sim with the new settings from fresh.
Thanks for the prompt response. I have checked other options and whilst there are others none of them are configured. The fact that other applications happily work under either wifi or mobile internet would seem to imply it is just these applications that are being a bit obtuse rather than any of the connectivity settings.
I guess I may have to hard reset - although I am not convinced that the SIM would govern connectivity settings of microsoft applications.
Just noticed QuickGPS does the same thing i.e. will only connect through mobile internet - it complains it cannot connect if I try through wi-fi only.
bl**dy hell - Google Maps does not work now either!!!!!!!!!
lol, one problem breeding others, it's a "feature" hehe.
Ok i'll shut up now.............did a hard reset and all seems good for the moment at least. Frankly I clearly should have bowed to your better judgement LOL
sometimes its the best first thing to try. once you have done a few they only take 20 30 minutes, you can spend hours with network problems.
