From Symbian to Windows Mobile - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Hi all,
Being a newbei in PPC based on windows mobile OS i want a tiny guidence from Prophet users. I am planning to buy ( and shift from synbian base Nokia 6630) my first budget PPC as XDA Neo, but only cocern is its slower proccessor speed of 200 MHz (compared to other having 400 MHz). I am confuse whether it can handle video smoothly and multi-application running simultaneously ( with or without overclocking) ??
Beside this, im an addict of 6630's stereophonic music in headphone( and speaker), so please tell me about the sound of O2 XDA Neo also.Is it comfortable good( i guess it may not match 6630's stereo).
Being a uesr, if u all please guide me , i will be higly thankfull to all of u.
ASAP

Hermes -- not Prophet!
I doubt that the Prophet (XDA neo) would be a good choice if you are concerned about sound quality and processing power to play really smooth video. A better choice would probably be the Hermes (TyTN). The size is almost the same (not counting the size of the hole it leaves in your wallet if you buy it unlocked!) and the keyboard comes handy if you do a lot of texting. And it has official support for stereo Bluetooth. The Hermes is still fairly new so it will probably receive software updates for a while longer. At the same time, while it is still being actively marketed and sold, software support for the Prophet seems to have ended.
I sold my Prophet a week ago and considered the Hermes for a while but decided on the SE P990i instead and I am so much happier for it.

Frnds ,Please Reply.
Thanx

I don't use it for video but I use it a lot as mp3 player connected to a stereo bluetooth headset. I think audio quality is eccellent. I have used a Nokia 6630 in the past and there isn't much to miss. The issues I had with synchronising that phone with Outlook put a giant X on Nokia for me.
Another option for you would be the HTC P3600 which will be in shops in a week or so. It's faster (400 MHz) and it's 3G. (But quite expensive!)

i have a qtek s200 and i use Pocket Music for mp3 playback and tcpmp for video, and i use a pair of creative 630 earbud headphones, and i have to tell you, the whole auido/video experience is superb! plus i'm planning to buy a pair of wireless bluetooth stereo headphones which SonyEricsson has recentcly released, i know it's gonna be AWESOME!!
anyway, if you have enough money, then i'd suggest you buy htc TyTn or 3600 or o2 atom exec

frnds, i have read/heard( dont remeber source) that TI OMAP 850 proccessor is dual core and so its performance is nearly acceptable as other intel or samsungs processrs with 400 Mhz speed. Is something like this true ?

Yes it's true. The OMAP processor has one core that deals with multimedia and another core that deals with telephone stuff.
It's not straight forward to compare single core CPUs with multiple core ones though.

Is it all? no other reply. frnds im going for Neo. expecting last word from u.

how good is the magician?

I've been looking on here when I was going to get the xda iis but didn't buy it due to the many software issues and problems. Can anyone tell me if the magician or xda mini is a lot better and whether or not is is plagued by lots of problems as well? For now I'm going with a c500 or smt 5600 but will be looking into a mini later, provided that all the bugs have been worked out. Thanks
These are two totally different phones you are comparing. You need to give more detail about what you want to do with the phone and what your prioroties are among there.
Otherwise its like asking people if you should by a Ford Taurus or an F150 - and not saying a single word about what need a car for in the first place.
well my problems with my imate jam is the camera quality is bad compared to any 1.3MP phone..... the earphone quality is a bit bad used to be really bad before the latest update. my GPRS connection won't hold for 2 mintues without dropping..... the bluetooth driver could be better if it wasn't MS stack.... other than that it's a great device
hope that helps
Go get Mini if you can live with its:
- low camera quality
- limited Bluetooth function
- no Wifi
Then why do I own a Mini:
- form factor is great. (feel somewhat sexy holding it. 8) )
- don't care about camera
- Wifi? Why?
To me, mini is the best combination of PDA & phone.

Did you try the GPRS registry tweak for this because I don't have this pb since I used it...
@snorlax
no i haven't.. could please explain more ....
thanks
So download it there www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/products.htm
Install and run it and in the options you'll find the "GPRS always on" checkbox...
thanks man i will try it...
Its the dogs bollocks, what more can I say
No really it is the best PPC by far and I should know, Ive had quite a few starting with a casiopeia then a few iPaq's then a loox, then an Axim, a few more iPaq's, XDA, XDA ii, XDA iis, iPaq 3715 and now the Jam. It really is the most stable device I have owned and the form factor is perfect.
Who cares about wi-fi ??? buy a sandisk wi fi SD card, I did and it works great.
Not that it is without its faults mind you, the camera really sucks and since I upgraded to the latest firmware my device has been quite unstable an d the BT software is appalling, but hey ??? whats perfect

I can vouch for it's stability - it's vastly superior in this respect to my two ipaqs and my godawful Fujitsu Loox. Bluetooth on my ipaq was unstable, and it was downright laughable on my Loox!
I can't believe how simple and straightforward the Bluetooth is on the JAM - I currently have paired a headset for taking calls on the bike, a BT dongle for internet access via activesync with my PC, and a GPS device.
All work flawlessly.
The camera isn't great, but it's grand for its intended purpose - as a camera for the PHONE. It's not intended to replace my ixus 40 at all... it's meant for sending MMS's, that's all!
JAM is a complete bargain!
imate jam or xda iis
Thanks guys for the feedback. Believe I'll try one when I get the funds...(who knows how long that'll take)?? Have a c500 smartphone at the moment which is doing quite well for it's purpose intended. I don't need a camera, have a sony dsc-v1 for pics...would like to be able to watch a good dvd with a ppc though.
Hi USdriver
Is coming to the UK on the 18 april 2005. not quite sure if this is any good to you but might give you an idea that the MINI is in its way
Joseph
xda mini
hi mario...yes, it does help. Thanks for the info...I'll be looking out for it, as the best way to see if you like something or not is to actually be looking at the device, rather than pics on the net...
@steve: Been using it for a few months. It's a very decent Pocket PC phone and the size is great. My only complaint is that the camera sucks, but since you have a digi cam for your photos this will not be an issue for you however if you want to watch videos and movies on a PPC you might want to get a vga device better resolution... I think a dell x50v or hp hx4700 plus a c500 is a pretty good combo

HTC Magician users - what's your next purchase?

Even though I've only had my device for 2 weeks, I'm already looking for the next model. I find that I'll need the SanDisk WiFi/256MB combo as I want to run the Skype, SJPhone, and Network tools from the SD card rather than use up the precious RAM. At the moment I have the Spectre WiFi card but need some extra memory.
I know, I know, someone will ask "why not use BIG STORAGE?" the reason why I won't do that is because I have a full one year's warranty on my device and should I sell my device in 6 months time (if I find a suitable upgrade model), the value would increase given that there are some warranty left for the buyer.
I didn't jump on the WM5 bandwagon yet or the new WM5 devices due to early undetected issues. Usually after 4-5 months, a lot of the early problems will be sorted by firmware releases. But yes, I plan to upgrade to the WM5.0 model in about 6 months time. But I'm starting to really like my mini
I'm getting 4 hours of continuous video play (not streaming) on my mini which I'm really happy. I have bluetooth on all the time as well.
My ideal upgrade would be the Dopod 818 Pro. All the accessories for my mini can be used with the Dopod Pro. But my main concern would be the CPU speed...I've configured my mini to run the software I need including about 5-6 plugins and a concern would be how slow the Dopod Pro would be with the same s/ware config as my mini.
Second on my list is the E-Ten M600 which I think blows the mini away with the Samsung processor which is much faster than the Intel equivalent. The M600 screen is also amazing and better than any PDA screens on the market today. Only thing is that the M600 is slightly bigger than the mini and doesn't look as good compared to the mini.
At the moment both Dopod Pro and the M600 still have early teethering problems but should be sorted in a few months time. But the mini growing so much on me right now, I may just decide to keep using it and upgrade maybe next Christmas.
The M600 is made of plastic from what I know, but also some of the new HTC devices are completely made of plastic so that might not be an alternative. There is the HTC Hermes unofficially said to be released in the first half of this year which offers UMTS and will be similar to the Wizard.
If you need WLan badly, then I would consider changing to another device, otherwise, I wouldn't give away my Magician. I also prefer Windows Mobile 2003 from WM5. The speed is often said to be slower with new devices using WM5, even when they have a faster CPU.
That's true M600 is made of plastic but that's not an issue for a lot of people. The thing I like about the M600 is the Samsung CPU (I tested the Samsung 300MHz CPU on the HP rx1950 running WM 5.0 and it was amazingly fast!) and the new tech LCD screen plus it already has working A2DP bluetooth functions, WLAN, and although camera is only 1.3MP but is comparable with the Nokias. The Dopod 818 Pro (Prophet) camera is the best 2.0MP in any PocketPC but maybe let down by poor CPU performance.
WM5.0 will gradually improve within 6 months time as more s/ware developers improve their s/ware to be WM5 compatible. Initial release bugs bugs will be ironed out of the WM5 devices.
The Magician is truly a striking PocketPC handheld no doubt about that. I won't consider any devices larger than the Magician/O2 mini but M600 is an exception (only a few mm longer and thicker). The whole point of a PocketPC phone is to have it small, light and fits nicely into your pocket like the Nokias not look like bricks in your hand :-D
I think O2 Atom, HTC Prophet (Dopod 818 Pro), and the M600 are the closest to Magician in terms of size and cosmetic features.
On the PPCSG forum people are not experiencing any performance problems with the 200MHz OMAP processor. More clock speed does NOT necessarily mean more performance. Look at the AMD vs Intel scenarion on the PCs for example! It's all about MIPS.
My next purchase will be the Dopod 818 Pro. The camera is amazing, and with a proper task manager that closes programs rather than minimising them, the speed is more than acceptable. More battery life is also welcome!
skype
hi noob,
you also can use skype on your magician after you have synced your jam via bluetooth with your pc.
i use it and there is no problem. you also can use many apps like this if you sync your jam via bt with your pc

serhataga
what do u think about t-mo compact II?
hi serhataga,
what a great idea...didn't think of that one. will give it a go....kinda of using the mini as a headset.... :-D
The T-mobile MDA Compact II is the HTC Prophet (also sold as Dopod 818 Pro). I like to get my hands on one and test it for myself but unfortunately in Australia, O2 and i-Mate are the HTC resellers. No Dopod or MDA brands and buying from overseas will be a headache especially with warranties.
The biggest advantage of the MDA Compact II is that you can keep using your magician accessories with it, your cases, chargers, screen protectors, stylus etc. Also the camera is undoubtedly the BEST on any PPC to date. The CPU maybe a concern especially it's only running at 200MHz. It's fine for some users but for others it's just too slow. Best to test out a shelf display model at your local store before making a decision whether to buy.
If you are in Australia like me, you'll have to wait till i-Mate releases their version of Magician II.
I think, at least in germany, the MDA compact 2 is based on the HTC Charmer, not the Prophet. The Charmer is kind of a bad joke, since it has the (yes, it definitely is) slower 200 MHZ OMAP CPU and no WLan or keyboard. This makes it a very bad choice if you ask me. The prophet hasn't been release in germany as well, same with the Atom, which seems to be the most interesting at the moment (what about the quality of its camera by the way?).
That's right Dandie, the MDA Compact II is not like the Dopod 818 Pro. It is basically the same as the Magician but has WM5 and the OMAP processor. The prophet has more hardware buttons, 2MP camera and WiFi 801.11g! The real Magician II!!
I love my Imate Jam to death. I will not sell it but maybe give it away to my wife cos I want it to stay in the family.
I have only two devices in mind to replace my Jam... it would either be the O2 Atom or the Eten M600.
I would prefer the Atom because of it's size and built-in radio. As for the M600, I would have it compete directly with HTC because of its affordable price and a different interface.
As for my Jam, I am a very proud owner and I am glad about the progress made to it to bring new life into it. From the Big Storage Rom to A2DP and improve BT. Despite being lagged of not being able to be moved to WM5, it sure is putting up a fight and that's what I like about it... being an underdog and coming out shining.
I couldn't resist any longer and ordered a Dopod 818 pro from Expansys HK, in stock and very well priced!
The JAM is a beautiful device and the Prophet is based on it! Plus WM5, Wifi, much better camera and EDGE ...
As a side note, the 02 Atom was very tempting but the initial feedback from the people who bought it is not encouraging at all. On PPCSG forums, people who bought the Atom went back from their decision and changed it with the Prophet. The built quality of the Atom was not satisfactory, buggy software and sloooooow.
kta, give us a review of the Dopod Pro in two weeks time as to its performance. Definitely want to know about the CPU performance.
Sure, no problem
The Magician is the pioneer for a mobile phone/pda combo. You can't help but want it due to it's small size form factor. Forget about the Wizards and Universals...Magicians are the coolest PDA-Phones today
well..until the Dopod 818 Pro and E-Ten M600 take over
Hi mates, i'm going to break the line and will change to Nokia N70, less buggy and with fully funtional BT. ( F.O. Htc)
I only have a Magician now but here is what I found from recent PDA phone
I think O2 Atom is a better replacement for Magician. It even smaller than Magician and has built-in A2DP and wifi. The only drawback is it use mini-SD and we have to give up our investment on SD card.
818 Pro doesn't have build-in A2DP yet (People said they will have it in the future but who knows....) Battery life of 818 Pro is better but people complaints about it's lagginng when running multiple programs. Also, Skype is not running very good on 818 pro.
Here is a benchmark test on various PDA phone: http://forum.mypdacafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=7796&sid=77e4cfd56835b0f3e33dc0da98fd7780 U may found Atom is not very attractive in the test. But for me, the 200mzh CPU of 818 Pro really worry me most....
Only one device will make me change :
The upcoming MIO Mitac A701 !!!
WOW.

I'm surprised you say this. Just look at the your own posted benchmarks, and the 416MHz on the Atom is not really a good alternative!
Woohoo..E-Ten M600 killed 'em all at benchmark....
Atom's slowness could be a firmware issue but expect it to do better in tests 6 months time.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4190.html
Wow the Mio PDA-Phone is to die for but only thing isthat it lacks Wi-Fi, but GPS is a good compromise.....it's also around the size of a Magician

should I buy universal or Eten's m600+

I am struggling with final decision need to purchase a new phone for regular use.... I like the track record of HTC and this web site..(at least with your help I will know how to deal with any problem.
...Eten is an unknown to me but the m600+ is still in the game (I have cut Atom and prophet from list due to slow processor speed since I must Skype on a daily basis with this phone...hermes will not be out in time for this purchase)
I like the idea of a 2 mp camera, full size SD slot, highly rated (by some comparisons) samsung 400 mhz processor and v 2.0 BT and a smaller size unit (dont need keypad)....but Have seen a couple of on line complaints about poor reception and dropped signals wit eten...
like the large screen on universal for web browsing....I am a little concerned that size of unit will make it a chore to carry around...(will not be as lucky as a lot of you who have a herd of these gadgets and switch from big to small...I will have one and be stuck with it.....or it will be stuck on me!)
with your Universal experiences....if you could choose today would you go with Universal or with Eten m600+??
Thanks for all of your advice....this site is great

Moved from Universal to Hermes (Observations)

FYI - Anyone considering upgrading to Hermes
I have been using a universal for the last 18months and have now sold it and upgraded to the HTC Hermes.
The universal served me very well and the only thing I miss is the larger screen and VGA resolution and standard 3.5mm jack - however - I don't miss the bulk.
The hermes is everything the universal is minus the VGA.
My default Rom on the universal was Helmi's v1.3 which was AKU 3.5 and was a very very stable/solid rom.
I later installed PDAVIET 2.04 pro (Crossbow/WM6) which was a little temperamental but solid never the less.
I have installed XDA Live 0.20 which is a Crossbow rom on the hermes and it is very fast, I mean very very fast in comparison to the the universal.
In actual fact the hermes feels like an overclocked blue angel. (Normal operation, responsiveness, games etc)
Before I had the universal I had a blue angel that I used to regularly overclock to 530mhz (XCPUSCHALAR) and I can tell you that the herms feels very close to this.
I actually wonder what the hermes is capable of if overclocked slightly - As I don't have any figures (Pocket Hackmaster performance Index, SPB benchmark, etc) I can only speculate - but I'm looking forward to investigating this further.
Incidently the hermes has the Imageon gpu that was present in the blue angel so it runs films in TCPMP with hardware acceleration something the universal lacks.
Now I'm not sure whether the Universal had slow ram, or it being a VGA device slowed it down or what but I do know that the hermes is orders of magnitude more responsive in every day operation than the universal was...
Wireless connects at 54mbs on the hermes instead of the 11mbs maximum thoroughput the universal supports even with the 802.11g hack.
And the Hermes also supports HSDPA (1.8mbs theoretical - if your network provider supports it). Admittedly this was a deal breaker for me as umts is cool but connecting at 1.8mbs to the internet whilst on the road is edging very close to nirvana LOL!
Now while I will miss browsing servers at 640x480 using ts client in WM6 (WM5 tsc was atrocious BTW - LOL!) I feel the hermes features and performance more than make up for it. Plus I recently purchased a Sony u50 (1st generation umpc circa 2004) which has a 800x600 5 inch screen and the u50 allows me to TS into server using the hermes as a modem (Bluetooth or serial comms)
Last but not least I need to mention the hermes 2MP camera - OMDs - LOL.
It is head and shoulders above any HTC Camera I've ever experienced and I have seen them all...
SPV to wallaby to alpine to blueangel to universal I've had them all and this camera is the 1st USEABLE camera in terms of how responsive the camera app is, the picture quality and the overall experience!
Granted it's no replacement for my Canon SLR BUT (BIG BUT) it's definitely useable and supports typical camera functions such as self timer, darkness controls etc.
All other HTC devices had a fairly decent camera app but a piss poor camera sensor that only operated remotely correctly with good light. The pics I get with the hermes are of comparable quality to recent nokia and sony phones.
Hope this information is of use to anyone considering moving from the Universal to a hermes.
haha funny enough I was looking at the hermes last night.
My contract has run out, im in the UK and o2 are no longer doing free gprs so I need to jump ship as its damn expensive! Three are offering unlimited (1gig) a month for £5 so that's my main option plus they have a HSDPA network. But the downside is they don't offer the hermes so i'd have to get it seperatly I want a hermes
Thanks for the review, I want a hermes more now
Thanks
Stu
actually, just a thought... with WM6 PIE has the option to view in VGA mode, this makes website VERY easy to view as if they were on a desktop pretty much which makes browsing actually possible on these devices. Is that function still available on the hermes ?
thanks
Stu
IE VGA
Hi Stu,
No that feature is not available in WM6 IE for the hermes as it is a qvga device (320x240)
Just checked the menu options in IE and noticed that option was missing whereas it was there in WM6 IE on the universal.
Cheers

O2 are just about to bring out a new XDA which is similar looking to the Hermes but appears to have a faster processor. It is apparently out on 26 March.

Or you might like to hold out for the I-mate Ultimate 7150 - more ROM, more RAM, faster processor, VGA .....
not made my mind up about the design of the new ultimate series, dont know what it is, they look at a little funny :? will have to see it in flesh.
This is what I hate about these things, its always add a little bit of extra time on and wait for the next device
The very mention of microSD in these devices is enough for me to overlook them and appreciate my Universal even more - despite the superior performance of the new devices over the Universal. Since the Universal is VGA, has a stable performance, and uses SD Cards - I am pleased with it.
Only when SDHC readers start becoming more mainstream in PDA Phones will I start considering a successor to the Universal.

Advice wich one to buy

Hi there please help me to decide wich Pocket PC to buy!
HTC P3600 or ASUS P735?
They are at approx. same prices so Wich one is better?
Thanks
Trinity. Why? Because P735 has no GPS, has a weaker battery, has no infrared. On the other hand, P735 is equipped with a faster processor, more flash memory, auto focus and probably doesn't peel off, which is nice...
@dubart
Thanks a lot, Dubart, I'll be more than interested if you could tell me about the p3600.
Actually how powerfull the battery is-especially when using wi-fi? The Samsung CPU- how fast is? is it capable of managing the latest version of Skype, or some 3D game? The camera isn't problem for me.
Do you know what graphic chip is being used in the Trinity? Is it capable of playing xvid without conversion?
Finally does every single p3600 peel off?
Camera is not worth mentioning at all... totally useless, if you want my opinion. Well, it's difficult to judge battery power because it depends on many many things (usage, network, etc) but I'll describe my experiences:
I usually charge my Trin every second night. Sometimes even every night, but I'm OK with that because prior to Trinity I used Symbian-powered Nokia N80 which never managed to last until 8 pm. Wi-Fi, backlight and GPS drain the battery significantly. I've tried 2-3 times using wi-fi & GPS all day long, and needed charging after a couple of hours already. Even bluetooth & infrared make an important difference when battery time is concerned. 400 MHz Samsung processor is fine, but only 64 MB of RAM is inadequate. Skype works just fine, but not v2.2 (good for chat only, voicecalls don't work) - you need to find v2.1 (both chat & voicecalls are OK).
Graphic chip is by ATI and I'm not sure about XviD...
And finally - peeling: mine started peeling off after almost two months, but a friend of mine has it (black one, too), and his one started after just a couple of days (maybe his fingernails are a bit longer ). It peels around reset button and around stylus 'compartment' (cannot remember the exact term for it right now...). You can read here that the problem exists with black ones only, but the white one is hard to find, unless Orange branded.
Networks here in Croatia are both 2G&3G and when I set the device to choose them automatically, it ocasionally drops calls (when on 3G), so I keep it manually on 2G and turn it to 3G just when I need to make a video call or surf using 3G speeds (which is not so often because of prices here...).
Where are you from?
polaris look sweet imho
If you are going to get any asus wait for the p750. It is going to be great. I have the 3600 and it has been a good little device. Its not the best at everything but it does everything well enough. I am going to wait for the p750 to come out in Oct/Nov.
I have the black p3600 for 3 months now and mine hasn't peeled at all yet! I have been really happy with it. Definitely worth the money. I use the wifi loads at home and it works a treat. (I am using it right now)
If that screen is 2.8", then it must be too big because it has a non-sliding keyboard
Buy the Trinity
Well I'm really concerned about the skype and that peel off.
Actually I've read that the skype for Samaung CPU is still in beta version.
Could be that the problem?
What kind is that chip by ati?
Imageon what?
Is it possible to use it for 3D accelerator?
Thanks to all of you!
Здравеи!
Don't worry about Skype. As I've told you - it works, but v2.1 which you can download from www.skype.com. Skype is probably working on a solution for Samsung processors. The graphic chip appears to be ATI The Imageon™ 2282 according to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1068170&highlight=ati+imageon#post1068170. Someone here posted a photo of Trinity's motherboard, try to find it, and you'll see what chip that is.
3D games work as well.
What's the price of P3600 in Bulgaria? Around 700€ here, that's why I bought it in Germany.
p3600
The best pda, smart phone i've ever had! Its got the best features about! It will do me fine until the polairs comes out

In BG now the trinity is sold for arround 500 euros, and I've heard that the cost will drop to 450 till christmas.
The graphics aren't teriblly fast but I hope to work for unconverted Xvid.
What about he Flash content viewing with the Trinity?
Is it true that there is fullyt functional plugin from Adobe wich makes possible viewing the flash objects inside the Pocket IE or Opera?
Have you tried this, and does the Trinity's hardware managed to render the flash content reasonably well-like desktop PC?
What about the sound quality from the stereo handsfree-bad, good, perfect?
I'm keeping asking a lot, please keep answering !!
I would wait for Polaris or maybe for Ipaq 600 / 900.

Yes, there is Adobe Flash available and it opens flash movies, but I just cannot make it work within IE or Opera. I always get a message that a plug-in is missing. The headphones that were in-the-box are nothing special, but I've found them to be OK after playing with Audio Booster.
Thanks Dubart!!
Is it possible to listen music with a standard 3,5" headphones using somekind of miniUSB-3,5" connector?
Does anybody can tell where can I read about performance tests of HTC p3600 or Asus P735 (CPU, graphics etc.)?
On GLbencmark and jbenchmark's sites there wasn't any.

Yeap, it is. I bought one of those adapters from eBay. They're very cheap, altogether with shipping it costs around 6 €! The sound on Sony's megabass headphones is great.
