HTC Wizard: early photos and specs [ 02:00 ]
Source: http://www.pocketpcitalia.com/
The web site Pocket PC Italia has posted early photos and specs of HTC Wizard communicator, which is positioned to replace HTC Magician(the model known as T-Mobile MD Compact, I-Mate Jam or QTek S100 depending on the operator). The communicator is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. Its QWERTY-keyboard is pulled out from one side in an unusual manner. Besides HTC Wizard has stereo speakers and a 2.1-megapixel camera with the flash. As this info appeared before the official release, the specs can still be changed.
The specs of HTC Wizard:
* GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
* EDGE
* Processor OMAP 850 by Texas Instruments
* Memory - 128 MB ROM, 64 MB RAM
* Screen – 2.8” TFT, QVGA
* Interface - Mini USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11b and IrDA
* Expansion slot for Mini SD cards
That'll be a shame if it only has a MiniSD hole. I'm sure the 4 & 8GB SD cards will start being available when the Wizard is released. You would have though 128MB too.
Oh well, fingers crossed
Here is the actual link -> http://www.pocketpcitalia.com/cms3/templates/PPC-NEWS.ASP?articleid=2222&zoneid=1
The Processoer seams nice:
http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wt...00&path=templatedata/cm/product/data/omap_850
Hope it also uses the complete 802.11a/b/g Functions and not only b.
The chip has also USB-Host!
Both together with Windows Mobile 5.0 and 128MB Rom would be enough for me to switch from my MDA compact to this baby.
But would prefer it without keyboard...
Not sure about the processor - max speed of 200MHz puts me off.
The IPAQ 6340 has a similar Processor (OMAP1510) also with only 200MHz.
In the OMAP1510 is a ARM925 integrated
In the OMAP850 its a ARM926
Only found this benchmarks:
http://www.ppcreviews.net/news_8130.html
But the OMAP1510 runs only at 168MHz so [email protected] should be a bit faster
XScale MHz != OMAP MHz
XScale MHz != OMAP MHz

Ti seems to be pushing this mode of thinking, after all the processor has multiple cores dedicated to separate functions.
However in real life situations, OMAP MHz are exactly XScale MHz, look at the benchmarks. You won't be running FPSCE on OMAP any time soon. Just because it has separate cores for DSP doesn't mean that other devices do their radio DSP in software on the main processor, I can't think of one that does. The only special thing that the OMAP can do is parallel video/audio decoding, but then who runs something processor intensive at the same time as watching video? A 400MHz XScale makes a better job of it in S/W, and is not tied to specific codecs; plus many video chipsets/cores offer some form of video helper functions in hardware too (although it seems certain chipset manufacturers don't want developers to use the features )
The only advantage I can see for OMAP is the cost to manufacture, which of course isn't passed on to us consumers...
rough release date
How long do they usually take to release these things after the public find out about them?
Another link
Here's another link I found on the Italian website. This should also be the new HTC phone, but doesn't look exactly as the previous posted link?!? (By the way I don't speak Italian. So can't really understand anything else than HTC and the specs.) :?

C'mon - where the transalation!
It's a real pitty Google doesn't have a Norwegian to English converter!
How about a few details Oystein. How does it compare with the Magician and have the buttons been moved to better locations (camera, recorded and 'other' (above the volume slider). I need to know!!!!!!!

I've been walking around with one in my pocket for a few days, it feels kind of plastic, and the keyboard does not slide out in a nicely straight way, it can easily go crooked.
putting it in your pocket always gets it half slid out.
messing up the auto screen switch between landscape/portrait.
and it feels slow.
...
looked inside, it is actually just like the typhoon/sp3 smartphone, same rom layout, and same type of protections.
there is also a smartphone model coming out later this year, that is the same device, but as a smartphone. no touch screen, phone keyboard. 240x320 screen, with wifi.
that, for a smartphone is a really nice device.

Hi Folks,
I need a new smartphone and I love the HTC devices.
I've been reading a lot of data charts lately and I'm really confused.
WHY IN THE WORLD did they cut magicians processor power in halfs when they built his successor charmer??
Magician has an Intel XScale Prozessor Bulverde with 416 MHz. That's about the power I'm looking for. But they downgraded Charmer to a Texas Instruments OMAP 850 Prozessor with ridiculously 206 MHz.
My old beloved Wallaby has almost more power!
Can anybody explain this decision?
I didn't find any benchmark tests of charmer on the internet. Magician's benchmarks are awesome for his size and high enough to play pocket quake or watch unconverted videos, but it seems nowbody is testing Charmer.
Any people here with a Charmer who want to run SPB benchmark (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/benchmark/?en) for me and post the results? or just tell me how many fps unvonverted .avi movies give you.
THX!
Hey. The charmer has about 1000 SPB benchmark points, the Magician around 1600. That's a fact, also for the Wizard and the Prophet. A good alternative could be the Hermes which comes out soon and has the Samsung 400 MHz CPU.
There are Magician benchmark, which is approx 1,200 (I've got that from http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=54370&highlight=). ). As for the Charmer, it is way way way lower than that. See the chart
here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=313810#313810
The only thing Charmer is good at seems to be the graphics. But there is a benchmark on charmer regarding video playback, which is still not as good as the Magician, which I suspect because of the low bandwidth of the Charmer's file I/O.
Take a look here as well
http://www.modaco.com/Benchmark_results_of_MDA_Compact_II-t234674.html
Any idea why they sacrificed so much power?
the data charts don't really say something about great improvement in batery life due to the slower CPU, which appears to be the only logical reason to downgrade a CPU in a PDA.
why did they do that? the charmer seemed so promising perfect with WM 5, long batery life and small size....
is WM 5.0 less power hungery?
Most state that WM5 is slower. I suppose this is mainly due to the new memory layout of WM5.
Why did they include a slower CPU into the Charmer? Maybe due to the cheaper price and HTCs stupid management? If you want a faster WM5 device with phone edition, then look for the Eten M600 (very good benchmark results) or wait for the HTC Hermes which is soon to come and presumably will have better benchmark results as well.
The charmer is a rediculous device as the successor of the Magician.

Another probable reason for the lack in speed in Charmer probably due to the persistant flash memory (doesn't need battery to keep the data) which is usually slower than the non-persistant ones. Think of it as having SD as storage for the Charmer. Someone ought to do a test on Wizard and compare Charmer against Wizard.
I think they reduce the processor speed in order to increase the battery life... because most of the times, fast processor consumes battery life as well. we can see from iPAQ h6365 where it uses 168MHz processor. battery life was very good (apart from its 1800Mah battery, of course)

exactly
the charmer and the prophet are designed as fones with ppc capabilities.
ppc battery life is a day or less, the charmer et al several days.
all depends on what you want the device for really, sometimes the lack of speed frustrates me, but the ability to go days between charges doesnt
Any one knwos the battery life of the Magician? My Charmer last only like 3-4 days with average 1/2 hours of talk and some basic usage, 24 hours phone on - standby
MY MAGICIAN (o2 XDAII mini) can only last for maximum 2 days...
And it 's very unstable when battery is getting low ...
Thoughts: Slower CPU and higher capacity battery seems to be the only solution to extend the battery life.... I rather charge every day and have a faster device

do you know any company who sells them with contracts in germany? I have problems finding carriers outside england on google or ebay.
I guess hermes will take another month (or two).

You can get it for example here
Lets wait for the HTC Trinity
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/01/htc-trinity-revealed/
Always waiting - I'm sick of it 8)
The Hermes has everything besides GPS that the Trinity will have. It doesn't feature normal SD cards as well, that may have been a reason for me to wait. Integrated GPS is useless in my opinion. The integrated reveivers have bad connection quality and all maps that you can get for navigation software are only working well for car navigation - my car has enough space for a Bluetooth GPS mouse. No need to wait if you ask me.
OK, but HTC Hermes is not HTC Magician form factor. It has a keyboard and is much heavier and thicker. It compares to the HTC Wizard.
The HTC Prophet I will skip, it is the same form factor as Magician, but has a slow CPU and no UMTS/HSDPA.
And to bring you up to date: in those new devices is an "A-GPS" which means "assisted GPS". This means, GPS data is supported by localization data from the mobile network. That results in a much quicker first satellite fix and equals out some disadvantages of these small GPS chips. However, if your mobile network provider does not support A-GPS, you have a weaker GPS reception than with state of the art GPS mouses.

Mh, ok. I will see how much the difference is in my pocket. I think it weighs 30 grams more than the Magician and is about 5 mm thicker. I think I can live with that, especially because I'd like to have a keyboard and I don't want to wait anymore

Ok, you're right, assuming your provider supports A-GPS (additional costs?). But still there is the point with the standard navigation software which just isn't suited for navigation by foot or by bike. For the car, I can use a GPS mouse without any disadvantage (I already have one anyway). Personally, I don't see a good reason to wait for the Trinity.
omap 850 isn't slow!!! intel xscale is only 416 Mhz arm9 core while omap is an 195 mhz arm9 combined vith 67,5Mhz arm7 mcu(mcu speeds up the main core cause it controles ram instead of main core) so 195 mhz omap is aprox. or more 312 mhz of xscale, it also has 100 MHZ integer and floating point core and 2d accelator.....
So you say charmer is actually faster than magician? I'm having a dilema between these two, don't know which to buy? But would prefer faster...
of course no.
Might seem like a stupid question, but does anyone know if it is physically possible to upgrade the Omap CPU with the 400Mhz CPU found in the HTC Tytn?
Does anyone have pictures or technical specs and diagrams of both the Prophet and the HTC Tytn, so this can be investigated or ruled out? Any helpgul feedback will be appreciated.
The two devices have a different pinout which limits the idea from the physical aspect. Each also has a different firmware.
I hope HTC's next product would be an upscale Prophet with strong CPU, UMTS/HDPSA and a 3.3Mp camera. It will be to the TyTn what the Prophet is to the Wizard.
I also didn't find anything lacking in the Prophet compared with TyTn except for the stronger processor (and speaker volume).

Well if there is a 400 Mhz Omap processor, can that be used to replace its little 200 Mhz brother? I quite like my Prophet and don't really want to upgrade to a newer device if this is at all possible. I'll investigate myself and share my findings.
Looks like we've been misinformed. It's a Samsung processor! Though the Trinity looks very appealing (especially with in-built GPS), I think I prefer the TyTn. See below:

To my knowledge many hardware upgrades can be made to the Universal.
Seeing earlier posts of Universal Motherboards and chipsets...
It is possible to solder and upgrade the Universal.
Upgrades Include:
1. RAM - Suggested Hynix DDR / SDR RAM
2. Processor - nVidia (includes video card upgrade) if you are lucky or the new Intel PXA29x Monahans or Intel Bulverade x270 650mhz processor.
3. Wifi upgrade to Atheros ABG
All these upgrades are possible. If anyone is successful on doing these upgrades or has any ideas from where these parts can be obtained.. we are looking at the next generation pocket pc's and mobile devices to be created on xda-developers.

Why not suggest this to a real company like Pocket PC Techs: http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~O2_XDA_Exec-500~area~repairs.htm
They already have a repair section for the Universal. It might be easier for them to acquire everything, plus it would give us the option of having trained professionals handling our Universal.
But I read sometime ago, someone already tried this and did not work.
Mobile SDR/DDR RAM
I will consult Pocket PC Techs as you say they are professionals.
I will consult Intel, Atheros and Hynix on obtaining the parts. I am highly trained with soldering since i recently upgraded the video card on my motioncomputing LE1600 tablet pc ($5000). This phone Universal costed me $1200 from expansys and I would not like it to get busted. But i am pretty sure i can do it myself. If successful i will post pictures of the new chipset. Most certainly it will fit into the same body. Device Driver flashing will need a new ROM... i guess Helmi's/Ivans/Jwrights ROMS wont work. Anyways this will take me a week to a month to obtain the parts. And a few days to solder.
The hard part is making the ROM. Maybe my new project of Windows Crossbow i can integrate the device drivers into the ROM since they will be provided by the manufacturer for sure. So its not impossible i would say. Getting help from Pocket PC Techs really sounds good.

Again Spam
The Hynix RAM is not at the bottom right. It is supposed to be on the left. This is what the image is. Which i got from another thread! The RAM is supposed to be soldered on the top right. Right beside those 3, 2 slots are left for RAM to be soldered. And there is no Intel P4 processor. I guess people can use this as a reference to solder.
Anyways i am not going to keep mentioning about your spam. Because wind just adds more to the fire. The rest is upto the forum administrators.

Exactly what i was thinking. Upgrade the RAM and the processor (processor upgrading i think is impossible). And then the video card <-- not great chance of upgrading.
Currently i can only give confirmation based on my skills that i can upgrade the RAM. Getting hands on the hynix SDR/DDR RAM will not be easy either.
I am also sure that these upgrades shall keep our Universals tuned in for another 5 - 10 years along with Windows Mobile Crossbow and Windows Photon. Just like the Windows Vista that will be up and running for 10-15 years.
Anyways after these upgrades are successful i plan on marketing my product of research and upgrade for twice the same price as the universal. I shall post pictures of the device once it is upgraded and what the new ROM recognises.
I am currently working on Windows Crossbow and Windows Photon as well.
Now i base my research on facts from wiki so there is no chance of failure.

would would the CPU be impossible to ugrade? I believe the RAM is the most difficult because, I think, Win Mo doesn't recognize more than 64MB... but I don't have facts for that. would be awesome to have 128MB or even 256, 512 would be tha sh1t! I checked those chips and I have a PDF 'bout it... if it helps. but I haven't seen such low capacity
Now the processor would be awesome to upgrade, too... but why not? maybe pin configuration? or would they be able to compile WinMo for just one speed of a processor? or are we talking 'bout different processors altogether?
I was checking the internet 'bout such things, reflow stations(pro, DIY) and solder paste, but I'm afraid to try with my Universal as I haven't done it before. any ideas?

1. Steps to upgrade the processor.
a. Remove the existing soldered chip off the motherboard (most likely will damage the motherboard while removing the existing processor chip)
b. Obtain the next processor chip. Probably will be from the same family of processors or any other compatible chip and solder it on.
c. Make a ROM that supports this hardware.
Higher End processors:
PXA27x (The universal one)
The PXA27x family (code-named Bulverde) consists of the PXA270 and PXA271-PXA272 processors. This revision is a huge update to the XScale family of processors. The PXA270 <-- (((this one is ours))) is clocked in four different speeds: 312 MHz, 416 MHz, (((520 MHz))) and (((624 MHz <-- (((this is what we can upgrade to most likely))) and is a stand-alone processor with no packaged memory. The PXA271 can be clocked to 312 MHz or 416 MHz and has 32 MiB of 16-bit stacked StrataFlash memory and 32 MiB of 16-bit SDRAM in the same package. The PXA272 can be clocked to 312 MHz, 416 MHz or 520 MHz and has 64 MiB of 32-bit stacked StrataFlash memory.
Now this is the processor we are aiming for:
In August 2005 Intel announced the successor to Bulverde, codenamed Monahans. They demoed it showing its capability to play back high definition encoded video on a PDA screen. The new processor was shown clocked at 1.25 GHz but Intel said it only offered a 25% increase in performance (800 MIPS for the 624 MHz PXA270 processor vs 1000 MIPS for 1.25 GHz Monahans). An announced successor to the 2700G graphics processor, code named Stanwood, has since been cancelled. Some of the features of Stanwood are integrated into Monahans. For extra graphics capabilities, Intel recommends third party chips like the Nvidia GoForce chip family <-- ((NOT AUTHORIZED BY NVIDIA)).
******NOW CHECK THIS OUT:: YOU THOUGHT THE PROCESSOR WAS EVERYTHING RIGHT? WELL SEEMS LIKE YOU WERE WRONG::READ WHAT WE CAN DO WITH THE RAM********
This is why i chose Hynix and not Samsung
Hynix Semiconductor Inc. (Hangul: 하이닉스 반도체) KSE: 000660 is an electronics company founded in 1983 as Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. In the 1980s and 1990s it was mainly focusing on marketing DRAM, and then later SDRAM. In 2001 the business sold their TFT LCD assets for $650m, of the same year they developed the world's first 128MB DDR SDRAM for graphics.
Hynix is among the Worldwide Top 20 Semiconductor Sales Leaders.
In 2004-2005 an investigation was carried out into a worldwide DRAM price fixing conspiracy during 1999-2002 that damaged competition and raised PC prices. As a result, Samsung <-- (SEE SAMSUNG IS A LOSER) is to pay $300 million fine, Hynix was to pay $185 mln in 2005, Infineon: $160 mln in 2004. Micron Technology cooperated with prosecutors and no fine is expected.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now getting to the RAM
The RAM is an addon in the universal and not a replacement. Replacements are very damaging to the device and decreases the life of the device.
So all we got to do is addon the RAM.
Now i am going to personally speak to a Hynix manager and ask him if our devices are upgradable. I will also ask him about the pricing and how we can make bulk orders. I will read on more about RAM and what should we buy exactly? They manufacture so many products and you dont want to pick the wrong one.
Ah yes and they also manufacture better LCD screens for the Universal. In case some one wants to take on that project most welcome to. I would love a Anti-glare glass screen for my universal.
RAM,processor or WiFi of Universal cannot be upgrated, though RAM of HP4700 can be upgrated to 128MB.but the camera of Universal can be upgrated to 3.0MP.It costs only RMB200(USD25).There are already many people(except me) upgrated their camera of Uni.I will post the pictures later

$25 USD Sounds too unreal for a 3MP camera upgrade for Universal. What is the optical zoom/digital zoom/lens mm? We here at xda-developers.com are looking into technical and specific details. I dont want a 3MP camera with barely any optical/digital zoom and images that cant be taken in a sunny day.
Also RAM upgrade is possible. Why else do you think those two empty solder spots are left on the motherboard?
I was sure that the camera can be upgraded too. I will find out more camera details and keep the forum posted. Since i am a professional SLR photographer i can provide the best camera's to the Universal device.
This means a stronger high beam flash can also be upgraded.

This means a stronger high beam flash can also be upgraded.

Maybe $25 USD Sounds unreal for you,but in China,it's real. But now I can't find out the pictures of it on Chinese forum. It has optical zoom.
The battery costs only $25 in China, the imitated one costs only $7.And the 3200mAh battery costs less than $15 now, though I bought it for $19 5 months ago.I bought my T-Mobile MDA Pro for about $530.
Two empty solder spots are left on the motherboard is because the Universal was fist made for Windows Mobile 2003,which must has 128MB RAM.Do know CeBIT 2005?CeBIT 2005 had a Universal(T-Mobile MDA PRO) on show, which has WM2003 and 128MB RAM.
But someone had his HP4700 upgrated to 128MB RAM said that the Universal couldnot be upgrated to 128MB.He didn't tell me the reason. And so far,I have never seen any one have his Universal upgrated to 128MB RAM.
Battery and Camera
yinfo you might be correct about the battery. I actually bought my Universal for around the same price as yours. Just $100 more. My 3200mAh battery also costed around the same price as yours. All my items came ofcourse from Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh and Hong Kong.
But my RAM is going to come from South Korea, Seoul.
Some good stuff is also being sold at Hanoi in Vietnam. Better check that place out.
Camera upgrade cannot be so cheap. It really sounds too unreal. I mean camera is not equal to battery. Maybe $100-$200 will be more realistic. Anyways I am still looking into this camera upgrade on the net, will find some results soon and keep the forum posted.
hehe, it all sounds so exotic! I got my universal for £150 on a rainy high street in the UK!
loving the chance for a camera replacement, though. also, i had a browse through the universal's disassembly manual, and the flash LED is just stuck-down then plugged in. i bet even I could upgrade that!

I want to upgrade the flash LED to the flash in the SLR digital camera. So that i get better image quality while taking photographs in the public. Also i would like a 3MP camera. I have printed images on photo paper before and they came out nice. But 3MP would be the best.
nuclear You foolish !!
You absolutely do not understand in electronics and PPC.
1) You can not change the processor since this not PC. Mobile processors PXA 270 and PXA2XX to have other points and other auxiliary elements.
2) Such reasons and about graphic chip.
3)The Camera can be theoretically modernized -but if have an alike connector and electrically parameters.
We conducted the modernization on typhoon c500 cameras. This device was delivered on european and chinese market with miscellaneous camera.
When installation of the other camera -you need other ROM with the other driver for this cameras. You can not simply change this driver - necessary to build in this in ROM.
I did this on typhoon c500. But this in a complicated way.
4) Theoretically you may add on Universal RAM - my friends conducted modernization and tried to enlarge RAM - but you may use only such RAM as it is used in Universal.
My friends concern with the repair PPC to have specialized device. In home condition you will not be able this do.
After they were added chip RAM - a system does not see these chips. We thought that probably system does not see additional RAm since does not enter the signal CS ( chip select ) -we have found this signal on board. But probably system does not see RAM since is not installed specific driver which will be able to service additional RAM.

Be enough to carry the foolishness and tell about that that you do not understand - you probably foolish young person who wants to raise its rating in this forum.
I heard that the P3600 is discontinued b/c of too many bugs. They came out with a P3600i to replace it. Is that true? They didn't say much about the bugs.

The P3600i is just the new model, it has nothing to do with bugs. They are running the exact same rom. The only difference that I can see is the processor is a bit faster at 500mhz instead of 400. The Trinity is not a buggy phone.
And the P3600i is the same CPU, but just OC to 500mhz....I am pretty sure of this but not 100%
who said it was because of bug?
trinity dont seem to have more bugs then other htc devices so i doubt thats the reason
about it being the same cpu overclocked then that would be a risky thing
as running components outside their specs will shorten their lifeExpency
and can cause stality as no 2 chips are 100% alike so even if one cpu could manage then another one might not
which would lead to more "bugs"
I'm sure I read it in some PDA magazine....time will tell....unless the CPU was already capable and it was planned.
Hey. I just bought a p3600i last week.
The main differences i have found are:
WM6
GPS enabled
500MHz Processor (NOT overclocked)
256MB Ram

Tell us more: What about the GPS, is there a quickfix program included? Is this the same or a different GPS chip (since the processor is new too...) ?
Overclock may be a misnomer, processor speeds frequently go up as yields of chips capable of operating at higher speeds increase. That is due to a variety of factors some as simple as the people on the assembly lines getting better at their jobs. Frequently processors rated at diffrent speed come from the same line and dies, they are just test at different speeds. That is what makes the whole overclocking movement possible.

I use Trinity more than six month and i have only one bug - painting at the bottom of the housing

I concur this bug. My Trinity is 36-hours old, and I managed to chip off part of it for miss insertion of the stylus

Same GPS chip to the best of my knowledge. No quickfix program, i'm afraid. I don't have a problem with the fix time anyway. 30sec to 1 min
And yes, my paint's almost all gone from my phone. 2 months old and it looks like it has a bad skin disease. Who paints over chrome plated plastic anyway!!?? Well, once the chrome wears away it'll look fine again i suppose!
