transfer files over wifi FROM pc - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Is there any way to mount a folder on the Hermes as a windows share so I could copy files from my PC using the PC interface? I know I can mount a shared folder on the device, but it's really fiddly. I know I can do this using activesync, but it's so slow compared to wifi.

The Windows Mobile platform has no active server capabilities.
There are FTP servers out there, but since you seem to be concerned about speed, the best way is probably to just use a card reader.

Thanks; I am concerned about speed, but also convenience, I'd like to be able to do it all witout extra junk to carry about!

Yes there is
warftpd is a solid and completely free FTP server.
Install that.
Then use Resco Explorer's FTP client.
I use it all the time.

File Access between PC and SPV 3001 over wi-fi

Hey
I've had my Orange SPV 3100 for about a week and a half now. 1st impressions is great. Just awaiting for the microSD to be delivered (Tight gits Orange dont provide one in the box ) to take full advantage of the M3100's capabilities.
Anyways
I've been accessing the web through my home wi-fi set up but what I really want to do is be able to access my files on my PC thru my M3100 using wi-fi rather than being conected using the USB and vice versa. Ideally i want to be able to copy files between the two. I've searched on this forum and others but havent come across anything yet I was just wondering if this was possible and how I'd go about doing it.
Thanks in Advance
All Help Appreciated.
Yeah, I"m interested in this too.
I have googling few days with different queries for accessing PPC files over WiFi, but without success.
The only software I have found which can access files from PPC over WiFi is SOTI Pocket Controller Pro, but it is far from ideal (e.g. cannot map PPC folder to drive on desktop PC) so you can only copy/move files between this app and windows explorer. Using file managers like Total Commander isn"t possible or other software (e.g. sync software) which access data by drive letters.
Second solution which I have is to set up FTP server on PPC (like ShareIT FTP Server) and use ftp-to-drive software on desktop PC, but I havn"t test this yet). In this case using Total Commander and other file managers would be possible, but I havn"t yet test this.
The last possible solution would be sharing desktop PC folder as an virtual storage card with microsoft network file sharing service and accessing it from PPC by apps like PocketLAN - but this is accessing PC"s files from PPC - which is not point of interest of this thread.
So finally, I havn"t found easy way to access PPC storage over WiFi.
Anyone have other ideas?

File Sharing over a Network

Does anybody how i could access my Pocket PC from my PC over the network. I could do it vice versa through Resco but i can't do Pocket PC from PC nor Pocket PC to Pocket PC. Any ideas? I would like it to happen just how the PC does it, with no major add-ons. I don't want to have to deal with VNC, FTP, etc. So if you know, i'd really like to know the answer. Thanks
I was looking for the same thing and haven't been able to find anything.
(I know you said u didn't want to use FTP)
So far the only thing I have been able to find for this is an FTP solution.

I can access the local network from the phone, but apparently there is no SMB server available for Wm6
Why can't you just use the explorer function of ActiveSync?

There are multiple reasons for wanting to access your device from the network. I myself am using multiple machines and would like to drag and drop files from my phone without having to get a bluetooth dongle and install active sync on every one of those machines.
If anyone has setup a smb server for wm6 i'd love to know, also if anyone has any other recommendations for a good ftp server that mocha one doesn't run in the background properly and the bottom toolbar for it stays on my today screen.
Not exactly what you're after, but I've seen a web server for WinMo around somewhere...
Or maybe something along the lines of a VNC client?
Yea, there are reasons for the networking thing. I have several devices on the network and i would life to get a NAS device. I don't want to go to the trouble of setting up ftp/vnc. Mapping the device using Resco works GREAT. For some reason, my laptop can't find my Tilt when i search for devices on the network and i was thinking maybe it was because it didn't have the same workgroup name?
useful for sure
Assuming you're on the LAN with WiFi, what happens when you port-scan your device's IP?
Not sure what you mean by port-scan but when i go to file explorer on my laptop and type \\ip of tilt, it gives me some error. I'm really trying to look into this and most advice is using vnc and another program which i don't want.

I don't think you're understanding when i said wm6 doesn't have a SMB server running.
Basically, it isn't running the microsoft networking services to access the file shares. You wont get it to work unless you get some sort of SMB daemon(server) for the phone, which to my knowledge doesn't exist.
look up SMB in wikipedia and u will understand what im talking about.
If using Resco to map shares, will you be able to play media (music, movies) over the wlan then, or will it not be fast enough?
I'm assuming that mediaplayer in wm6 won't have a problem playing from shares...or am I wrong?

I kind of got this resolved. Not the way i really wanted it, but now i use Pocket Controller Enterprise and it does this. Really nice features, i could connect to anybody in the world, just need their host name.
Doesn't the desktop version of total commander do this? The only problem is the desktop version isn't free...

Access PPC from PC via WIFI

Hi,
Is it possible for my WM6.1 device to join my LAN Workgroup such that I can view the files on my PPC from my desktop computer and drag and drop files over to the PPC via WIFI? Kind of like using the PPC as a NAS device?
Thanks in advance
Rob
Yes and No
To my knowledge no. i believe that microsoft stopped allowing that feature within active sync quite awhile ago, but what i have managed to do is to create a computer to computer network (ad-hoc) where my PDA was the access point and my laptop could then connect to that.
I could transfer files using explorer on my phone to access my network drives on the laptop, then copy and paste from there, but i could not find my phone on the laptop due to it not having shared folders to my knowledge.
The things i would like to achieve is shared internet over wifi by using the phone as an access point and to figure out how to access files on phone on the laptop. Not the other way round.
When i created this computer to computer network i thought that if i had 3G connected it would automatically pick up the connection on the laptop but i was wrong.
Which means i am no expert on the matter, but im sure there is a way
the same rules goes for pda's on the same net as for other computers
if they got the correct rights to access shared dirs
it can access them and map them if one use programs like total commander
and know a bit about network in generals not really that user friendly i guess
It can be done, I use a program called WMFTP. Google it.
Yea i get some of it

Some of it i get but others bits i dont. Like is it possible to set sharing rights to directory's on the phone? If that is possible great.
Also how do you find out the device name or would you have to use the ip address for mapping those directory's?
I have a touch diamond and would love to map the internal storage on my network, but have failed at that.
Still not figured how to share the internet connection of the phone over wifi either

Easy Remote File Access Idea

Let me start by saying this: I do realize there are other methods to accomplish this, and that this method will not work for everyone. But for me it's simple to set up, as well as neat and tidy.
I've started combining the use of Dropbox with Wyse PocketCloud for Android. I'm sure everyone is already familiar with Dropbox. Wyse PocketCloud, if you don't already know, is a fantastic RDP client for Android.
With this setup, I'm able to have access to any file on my computer at any time from anywhere, with acceptable levels of security.
Using Wyse, I remote logon (yes, even over 3G) to my desktop at home. I then use Wyse to find the file I need on my desktop, and then copy it onto the Dropbox folder on my desktop. Through Wyse, I've remotely added a file on my home computer to my Dropbox cloud. I can then logoff from Wyse, open up Dropbox on my phone, and download that file to wherever I need it. I've already been saved by this - I was able to obtain a copy of an important PowerPoint for work from my desktop, download it to my SD card, then mass-storage it onto my work computer.
There are other great uses for Wyse, but this is my favorite. I hope and pray they expand the Beta.
Steps:
1. RDP compatible OS (I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate)
2. Download Wyse PocketCloud from Android Market
3. Sign up for Dropbox and install the client to both your home computer and your Android device
4. Enable RDP on your home computer
5. If you're home computer is behind a router or other type of firewall, don't forget you'll need to set up an appropriate port forwarding rule!
This was a fantastic solution for me - I hope it helps others as well. If anyone else can think of creative uses for Wyse, I'd love to hear them.
i use wyse all the time. for the above mentioned use and i run a dlna server on my pc to feed media to other devices in the house, so if i need to share a new folder etc, and i dont want to go to the computer, i just wyse it.
Alternative - e-mail the file to yourself (using Wyse or another RDP Client)
Another alternative is to use an RDP Client to e-mail the file to yourself, and then access the e-mail on your phone.
RDP is vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle attack unless you are using certificates. I've also seen many a winbox hacked via RDP in the past, not really sure if they just used dumb passwords and accounts or what, but in each case the box was owned by a bot. As a result, I don't allow RDP anywhere at any time to any box.
If I want remote access RealVNC with encryption (Only in paid version) but don't think there is a Droid app for that yet, or I use something with an SSH tunnel.
As for files, I have files on a network share which is then mounted via NFS on an internal network to a Unix server which I can then hit with something like AndFTP using an SSH connection to get and put.
This includes access to all MP3, ISO, Movies, data, web etc.. access
This is not limited to use via a smartphone though, any SSH file transfer program will work from any Internet facing box.
I've used dropbox in the past and it is okay, but the above gives me full access to files without pre-planning what I am going to need.

That's really helpful information. It sounds as though there may not be a fully secure method to access your root that way? Wow, even just typing that makes me glad I don't really have sensitive info on that box.

Best DHD2DHD file transfer method

What is the best way to transfer large amounts of data between Desire HD's? My girlfriend got herself one as well after playing around with mine for a few days =) We see ourselves sending each other files ranging from 10MB to 100MB (occasionally more). And by this I mean when we're together away from home like when we meetup on Friday nights after work so no access to a PC.
Is Bluetooth suitable for transferring files of such sizes? Even if it would, wouldn't that take forever?
Will wifi be an option? If so, how? Are there apps that facilitate Andriod <=> Android file transfers?
Thanks in advance!
in my opinion the fastest method is to connect both of the DHD to a computer and transfer the file.
in another case wifi is pretty fast but i dont know how to transfer with it.

Samba. Never tried it on android but should work a treat if you can get it set up, though it does require root.

The easiest way is to get an app called Bump. Download it to both phones, select a file and Bump the phones together, and the transfer begins.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/bump/com.bumptech.bumpga
You can also turn one of your DHDs into a file server a browse it with the other app. There are quite a lot of alternatives. Search appbrain for "file server".
E.g:
SwiFTP FTP Server
http://www.appbrain.com/app/swiftp-ftp-server/org.swiftp
it turns a DHD into an FTP server, you can then use the IP address ti access it with an FTP client from the desktop or DHD (Astro, AnyFTP, etc.) and transfer files. The transfer will be as fast as the Wifi or network you are using.
