I think you can...
Lets assume, PPC1 has been configured with WiFi Remote Access.
Create an ad-hoc Open WiFi network from PPC2.
Connect PPC1 to this network.
Turn on WiFi Remote Access.
The PPC1 behaves as a server.
Open a Browser on PPC2.
Try opening the server address (as displayed on WiFi Remote Access Interface on PPC1. This is device specific).
A page should open.
Perform the password authentication on both devices, as will be prompted.
Try downloading the file from yor PPC1, the way you download usually through your browser on PPC2.
Its technically possible.
I don't have two PPCs with me to try this.
But, technically speaking, it should run flawless.
But, again you need lots of RAM on both the devices, specially on PPC2.
But, you must have a bit experience to use it properly.
And, only using it can help you know it!!!

i have tried different software on my streak. they all works fine in LAN. but seem none of them can work as normal ftp server on internet. i means i can tell my friends just type
ftp:user[email protected] to access my file on the phone from anywhere...
have u come across any good stuff working as a charm?
I haven't found a working FTP server, but Dropbox (free 2GB account) would work. There's a (free) dropbox client for computers and Android (and iPhone). What you do is create a directory then add your friends' email addresses to it as a share. From there, everybody can copy in and copy out files easily.
Running an FTP server constantly listening to port 21 might be a bit of a battery hog and unreliable as you move around in and out of signal.
but this require everyone installing client software which it not ideal...

There's an app called "Websharing" that when you launch it it tells you the "Http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxort number to access it from any web browser. You can either set a perm password, or it will self generate a new PW for each session.
Definitely not an "always on" solution, but quick way to share files and drop stuff on your phone from anywhere. I use it a lot to drop the odd .apk or other files onto my phone sdcard.

Yeah, I have the full version. And yes, AT&T does seem to block incoming (at least on the ports I've tried) but that problem may exist for any phone on any cellular network. I don't think the telcos want a bunch of web servers running in everybody's pockets.
But on wifi it's great.

What exactly are you trying to transfer? I use DropBox all the time and you can share files with other devices/people as well, follow that link for extra storage.
Ive also used a comp w/ bluetooth to transfer a bunch of pictures to my Atrix one time..

I use ES File Explorer, free in the market. It acts as a file explorer on your atrix, but can also set up LAN locations via ip addresses. With that you can easily copy files from your phone to computer and vice versa as long as both are on the same network.
Just hate having to take my sd card out all the time or moving my charger around. Just transfering music, videos and pics.
Apps Drawer > Phone Portal > Connect with Wifi
In your browser, connect to your phone by typing in your phones IP address followed by :8080 and you will connect to the phone portal which will allow you to manage your phone wirelessly.
Use IE 7 or Firefox 3 if possible as they are the most compatible with the software.

Quite welcome. You can also do this while plugged into USB if you are low on battery or whatever else.
Ever since the .83 update I have horrible signal in my house. I typically just leave my phone in another room lately where I get decent signal and use the BT headset for calls and then use my desktop or laptop for txting.
I have been using PhoneExplorer.. its free from the market. It will sync Outlook if you need that, it lets you run your texts in chat windows, and it syncs files and pictures as well as lets you upload and download to the phone. It supports wifi, bluetooth, and usb connections.
When I tried PhonePortal, I couldn't get to my files... I might have to try it again.
This guide will help transfer files from an Android Phone (HTC Desire running 2.2 Froyo) to the Transformer - using only Wifi anywhere.
I have only quickly tested this so the technique will probably simplify as I try more combinations.
This example will transfer files from Transformer to Phone as that is what I tested yesterday very very quickly!
Step 1:
Install "File Expert" from the Market on both Phone and Transfomer.
Step 2:
On the receiving unit for the file transfer, i.e. the phone. Start a WiFi hotspot so the phone is creating a wifi signal. (I am not sure yet how important it is which device does this step so standby for an update). Set a password to prevent unauthorised access to your phone!
Connect the transformer to this WiFi network (i.e. to the phone) using the password you set above.
Step 3:
On the receiving unit (phone), open file expert app, click "Share" in the toolbar at the bottom and press "Enable WiFi File Receiver".
Step 4:
On the Transformer (the file sender), open File Expert too. Long press on the folder or file you want to send, scroll to the bottom and select "Send via WiFi". It will search the WiFi network for a few seconds and should find the other device (phone). Accept any confirmations on the phone/Transformer and the files will directly stream over WiFi.
Notes:
+ This does NOT require an internet access, so if you are on the train or somewhere without internet, you can still do the transfer.
+ It is totally secure as long as you use a password on the WiFi hotspot.
+ I need to test if it matters which device sets up the WiFi hotspot, or which device is doing the file sending/receiving or if you really need to press Enable file receiver in the receiving device. This process will hopefully simplify to allow you to simply click a shortcut to wifi hotspot activation and the other device will automatically connect if WiFi is turned on - then hopefully just open File Expert on the sender device and it will send. This info will come or you can try for yourselves.
+ If your phone cannot do the device hotspot, look in the market as I think there are apps for it, Froyo has this built in so I didn't need any extra app.
+ This is the ONLY WiFi direct method I have found that works for me with my phone and transformer, the apps that claim to create FTP servers where you type in ports and things do not work properly in the android browser, only on your PC/Laptop browsers.
+This is faster than Dropbox because you are not hindered by your upload and then download speed connections.

It does not matter which device runs the Wifi hotspot, they can both send and receive files.
Small files like PDF's etc have worked quickly with no problems.
Larger files like 175mb videos have caused crashes and taken very large tims to even partially complete. I think the app needs an update for larger file transfers to work more smoothly.
i have not yet tried multiple small files like a music colletion etc.
You do for sure need to open up the app and click "enable wifi reeiver", else it doesn't detect the device when you search for it to send to.

Which web browser are you using on both the phone and the TF to be able to enter the IP of the other device?
Teradesk - I had not seen this app before, it is in the market to download for free FYI.
Tried Teradesk - its pretty good! It allows you to sign into an account with teradesk and then login in both devices to the 1 account and then you can view files on both devices and push or pull files from one or the other.
This allows for easy transfers. You CAN use your home wifi router broadband to do transfers, but this does it in Proxy mode, which means the files go to the teradesk servers and then back to the receiver device, this is fine for small files but slow for large ones.
You can tether one device to the wifi hotspot of the other which puts the transfers in direct mode, so the files transfer directly over WiFi but it means when you navigate the file browsers it is very slow because for whatever reason you use 3g on the mobile phone to search the file directories.
So if the file is large, use a wifi hotspot. If it is small (like <50mb) then use the home broadband proxy method.
I'm to lazy, I just use scp or SMB/CIFS, and thus trivially get other devices in the loop. Probably should try Bluetooth but don't need to.

I've been using wifi transfer pro just with the stock browsers on my transformer and sgs2. Both work very well. I haven't tried a big file yet, but hopefully shouldn't be a problem.

Same app as I stated above, it gives you an IP address to put into your browser. works with a PC as well.

Teradesk allows this too, it allows you to navigate both phone, TF and PC at once so you can transfer between all 3 just on the PC.
WiFi Explorer doesn't require root... and I just use the stock browser to navigate to the opposite device. Quick and Easy. Launch the app, it pops up with an IP and port (ex: 10.10.50.1:8000) that you type into a browser on another device. Launches quick and works great. App gets updated often too, so support is there.
It is a direct transfer, so doesn't require internet access... just wifi.
I have just used SwiFTP and it works fine for this purpose. And it is free.

File Expert gives you many ways to directly transfer files via WiFi. Let me explain it in details:
1. WiFi File Receiver/Sender -- this is just what you were using, we recommended to use this feature when you have small files or you just want to send single file/directory quickly via WiFi
2. FTP -- File Expert is a ftp server and client, which means you can use FE to manage (not just transfer) files on two devices. First on the host phone, start FE, choose 'Share My Contents', choose 'Start FTP sharing', then FE will give you FTP login info like IP, username and password, then on another phone, start FE, choose 'Network'. choose 'FTP client', choose 'Create A New Account' to input the FTP login info, then connect to host phone. You now can completely manage your host phone via WiFi.

The web sharing feature of File Expert features a desktop like web environment and are much easier and powerful than WiFi File Explorer PRO.

Does File Expert have built-in WiFi Direct support?
FTP,WiFi and Web sharing capabilities are all good, however WiFi Direct might be easier to use IMO. I have Android 4.0 devices, however I could not find a way to use WiFi Direct between them.
If File Expert have WiDi support, how it's used? If it does not have, would you consider implementing it? It would be a BIG plus for your wonderful product, xcxin.

I like AirDroid, it has a really slick interface on the computer. And it had tons of other uses besides transferring files. You wont need a IP address to connect, the website automatically creates a QR code that you can scan on the tablet for a connection.

Yes, there is. You can just use ES File Manager and connect to the share across the network.
If you want it to work anywhere you are, then you'll have to configure your router and firewall to allow this.

Not sure if your WHS has FTP or not, but if it doesn't you can install a simple FTP server like FileZilla. Then you could use one the many ftp sync apps to sync the photos folder of your phone with the server.

Thank you! This looks like exactly what I was looking for. I have never set up an ftp server, is filezilla a good one to use? Also do you have a recommendation for one of the apps to use?

OpenVPN + ES File Explorer.
Or any combination of VPN + SMB aware file manager.
Or as others have mentioned, you can simply do FTP. Remember though, FTP is not encrypted, and is a heavily targeted default port for script kiddies and professional hackers alike. At a bare minimum run on a high number non standard port, and preferably also don't allow access from the entire internet address space... That's still just security through obscurity, aka, not real security, but it'll help a tiny bit. Seriously though, if you've never run an FTP server before, I'd at least use a VPN, then go in over FTP, rather than just opening up to the entire internet.
Personally... I just use S3, and use that to store my files in the "cloud". It's cheap, just as fast to upload to, and you get the benefit of extremely reliable storage. Aka, if your server crashes, house burns down, etc etc. You can also use reduced redundancy storage on S3 if you wanna save a few bucks.
I then regularly sync certain S3 buckets to my local server from S3 for fast network access. Really up to you though... Lot of different ways to achieve similar outcomes. The biggest benefit to me though is I rely on S3 as a backup, and hence don't have to worry about backing up locally/off-site a 2nd time.

Filezilla is very easy and intuitive to set up. They also have very good instructions for beginners

Agreed. Also, for the app side of things, Foldersync is great. Ive used it in the past. You can read about it here:

As for the whole FTP being insecure thing, yes and no..... By changing the default por from 21 you should alleviate most of your problems. Even then I doubt youd really have any issues. Ive been running a web server with ftp enabled ON THE DEFAULT port for over a year and have had no issues. Im pretty sure youd be fine.
I use app called Sweet Home! You dont need to install anything on your WHS just set up configuration on your app with your WHS logon credentials.
Once complete, it syncs all of my photos and upload them to my designated directories on WHS when your phone is plugged to charge.
I also made a setting so that any photos older than 3 months are to be deleted on my phones but to be remained on my WHS (I knly have 16GB and always full of photos). thats the beauty of having WHS, it acts as your own cloud storage.
I have a WHS 03. This app also works on NAS if you have it.

You don't need OpenVPN. Windows7 and Server 2008+ both have pptp vpn servers built-in.
That's true, they totally do. But Windows VPN solutions are incredibly unwieldy.
And I wouldn't wish the pain of configuring it properly on my worst enemy.

Check out AeroFS basically what you asked for in your original post. Provides the app to set up hosting on your home network and an android app for your phone. Interface and use is incredibly similar to Dropbox. Plus for individual user it's free.
