Hi,
Is it possible for my WM6.1 device to join my LAN Workgroup such that I can view the files on my PPC from my desktop computer and drag and drop files over to the PPC via WIFI? Kind of like using the PPC as a NAS device?
Thanks in advance
Rob
Yes and No
To my knowledge no. i believe that microsoft stopped allowing that feature within active sync quite awhile ago, but what i have managed to do is to create a computer to computer network (ad-hoc) where my PDA was the access point and my laptop could then connect to that.
I could transfer files using explorer on my phone to access my network drives on the laptop, then copy and paste from there, but i could not find my phone on the laptop due to it not having shared folders to my knowledge.
The things i would like to achieve is shared internet over wifi by using the phone as an access point and to figure out how to access files on phone on the laptop. Not the other way round.
When i created this computer to computer network i thought that if i had 3G connected it would automatically pick up the connection on the laptop but i was wrong.
Which means i am no expert on the matter, but im sure there is a way
the same rules goes for pda's on the same net as for other computers
if they got the correct rights to access shared dirs
it can access them and map them if one use programs like total commander
and know a bit about network in generals not really that user friendly i guess
It can be done, I use a program called WMFTP. Google it.
Yea i get some of it

Some of it i get but others bits i dont. Like is it possible to set sharing rights to directory's on the phone? If that is possible great.
Also how do you find out the device name or would you have to use the ip address for mapping those directory's?
I have a touch diamond and would love to map the internal storage on my network, but have failed at that.
Still not figured how to share the internet connection of the phone over wifi either

Hi forum,
I have a WiFi Connection in my office premisis & was womdering if I could create a VPN or a similar p2p connection between my laptop & my universal...
Any comments or ideas..
Thanx,
mOrph
yes you can
but not an activesync connection.
you basically have to get on the WIFI network (VPN not necessary unless you are external of the network and/or behind firewalls).
then its a question of what you want to do, the WIFI network gets you on to it using WEP or WPA SPK I think (we use WEP at home and work).
if you want to connect to your laptop, create a mapped drive then you can copy and paste backwards and forwards.
you can run terminal server to control your PC or connnect to a terminal server, or connect to SBS with administrator priverlidges.
The question is, if you connected, what do you want to do. You cannot activesync, but you might like to try streaming music or other bandwidth consuming activities...
ok
got your PM.
Question: If you created the connection using WIFI between your laptop and your PDA, what do you want to do/achieve?

Hi
Answer:
Hi Simon... The reason i was wanting to connect my laptop & my ppc through Wifi is that i cannot activesync (like you already know).
I was thinking maybe i can have a data trasfer between the devices if nothing else.
Is that possible?
If not, what can the connection be used for?
Thanx buddy,
mOrph
Activesync cannt be done over WIFI, 2003 allowed it not WM2005.
You can share a folder on your PC, and thus place files in and out of that using WIFI. Generally though, I found it more efficient to use an SD card with a USB memory reader to transfer files, much quicker read/write. Usually I want to put pictures or videos back the other way anyway. some pc's and laptops come with memory card readers anyway.
ON your PC' find a folder, right mouse click and share it with a share name. Make sure you know the name of the machine, eg my computers name is TLA-DELL1 for work, and home is the name of my daughter. If you havent named your machine it will have some dodgy obscure pathetic name issued by the manufacturer. You can get this from system in control panel.
On your PDA, start your WIFI.
Using Resco explorer hopefully you have it, map a net work drive. You can try the standard file explorer, but I dont like it. Total commander can also do it. In the share address use:
\\computername\foldersharename
note the double backslash.
Enter usernames and passwords as appropriate.
Now, the pain in the arse bit.... do you have a firewall? This is where it can get tricky.
The other thing you can do is if you are running XP Pro (if not, I recommend it), you can also go into control panel > system on the tab called remote connection, you can tick a box that allows you to take control and use your machine on your PDA using Terminal Server. This allows you to access all the resources and facilities that your machine has as if you were sitting at the console, including the power and processing speed of your computer.
Only downside, the screen is much much smaller than your computer, so getting around it can be painful.
Once you have enabled your machine to allow the connection, its simply a matter of starting wifi, programs > terminal services, and enter the IP address or computer name of your laptop to connect to it, and it should open then a log on name for you to start using your machine.
A further feature, which I dont use and cannot advise how to, but read about it here, is to "stream" mp3's from your laptop to your PDA so you can play music on your PDA based upon music on your machine rather than having to copy it.
In relation to sending files to your computer, if all else fails, I ahve two extra email accounts on my PDA a hotmail account, a POP3 account, and if in times of need, a GMAIL account, all of which allow me to email particular files anywhere I want using any WIFI connection. I use this when all else fails.....
Hence my question, what did you want it for....
Dont worry mate, we'll get there... one day. We just have to challenge MS, and what is life without a challenge or 100 from MS.
can you use wifi to send files like bluetooth or can u browse other wifi cable phones or pc file system or hard drive what can you do with two wifi fonez can you lyk ad hoc the 127.0.0.1 to share filez or something like that

I have tried accessing my networked PCs and it works if you use Resco Explorer. Couldn't get it to work with the standad File Explorer.
There is almost nothing you can do with two WiFi phones.
You can connect them with ad-hoc network but Windows Mobile does not have the server components for file sharing.
I use Total commander to access files on my PC and even controlled it with remote desktop.
I had no problem accessing shared files on network with the built in explorer but it worked a lot slower then TC. Some kind of delay in the protocol or something.
How The Heck Do U DO That ConnecTin Via Wifi
CAn U Explain How To Get Resco Explorer Or Total Commander Since I have Never You Used Wifi Before I Can Pick Up Wifi signals From Nokia Devuces All Over And at My School Theres Some Sort OF signal Coming From the Offices and my fone picks the up 3 diffrent ones but when i press connect nothing happens can You Tell Me how i can Connect it to access files on a pc when the 2.0GHZ Signal Is Unencrypted I Went To Resco Explorer But theres No Wifi Options anywhere and This One Company said its Creating a applications to allow file transfer via wifi checkHERE! i Dont Know how thats possible can u connect to lets say a psp or Nentendo DS Or Iphonw or any Wifi enabled Device. Whats The Difference Between wiMAX and wifi coz they both use 2.0ghz? Wha does WIFI Stand For It Cannot Be Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). Tankz Yall

Wow thats a lot of questions!
Ok, in order:
1) Just because you see a WiFi signal does not mean you can connect to its source!
It could be another device (mobile / laptop / PC) that does not allow you to connect to it.
The network could be secure so you need a key.
The network could show as "unsecure" but use MAC (thats hardware address) filter so only authorized devices can connect to it.
2) If you managed to establish a connection, it does not mean you can access anything!
To transfer files from PC to Mobile using total commander you need the HD/partition/folder where the files reside to be shared and have the rights to access that share. (On windows PC you can right click a disk or folder and select 'file sharing'). Than you just access a network folder. In total commander for example, you click on the '\\' (top in the file list) then 'LAN', then enter a network path and password if needed.
To serf the internet the network you are connected to must be connected to the internet and allow computers on it access. You may need to manually enter gateway or proxy settings for that network.
3) I did not see any WiFi related tool in the link you provided. In any case it all depends on what software is on the device you are trying to connect to. If there is a server for sharing files (like on PC running win XP) than you can transfer files or you may need a special server program for that device.
4) WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity - that means the connection is reliable and unlike with analog radio signal which you might here distorted if the reception is not good your data will get through correctly or not at all.
5) WiMax does not work on the same frequency range as WiFi and it is designed for much higher data transfer rates.
You can read all about it here.

That's called theft and illegal intrusion of a computer network. People go to prison for that.
Yes it is very much possible.
Hi guys,
I am extreamly happy to say that i have been able to share files from one windows mobile to another windows mobile that too at the speed of up 450kbps.
i had been trying to do this for atleast 2.5 months with no luck(u may check the related topics, nobody had a idea, Even using xda, google, bing, yahoo, altavista found that nobody has done it before...) but yesterday i made it to work the way i wanted to.
All you need to do is create a adhoc connection(e.g P2P) and download FTP server (Yes your mobile will act as a FTP server) and FTP client.
For FTP server download mochasoft and for FTP Client download resco.
**Once you install resco 2008, go to menu-->options-->addins--> then download ftp plugging(and it will make resco to work as a ftp client)
Mobile A
Start--->settings-->connections-->add new ->name it p2p-->select the option "this is a device-to-device connection(adhoc)...once it is done, turn on wifi on Mobile B it will detect this connections, connect to it.....Now two mobiles are connected with each other via wifi(Without router).....Till this point you can find it in google.
Now to share files open mocha soft on Mobile A(It will show that it is "online" with a specific IP address(Note down this ip address), Anonymous login will be on but preferabaly create a user name (File--->settings--> Add[*give it a read/write permission]) and the password.
Then decide for yourself what exactly you wanna share with the other mobile, in this example i am going to share my SD CARD. Go to file -->settings--> other--> and in the "Login Folder:" put in "\\storage card"
Once that's done open up resco ftp on Mobile B. Go to My ftp locations-->New ftp session--Give a name to ftp session (like abcd), In the host type in the ip address address that you noted down earlier--> let the port 21-->Login:ut in the username that you created-->Password: put in the password
and Hey there you go!!!, you will have the Sd Card of Mobile A and you will be working on it as if it is in your own
....Cont...
On mobile A moccha will notify you that a user has logged on to your server. You can use all FTP commands on mochasoft.
I downloaded the 700Mb movie which was stored in my frnds mobile while we were having beer and it got downloaded at the speed of 450kbps(it started off with 350kbps and was fluctuating from 380 to 450kbps), Just before doing this i tried to copy a 10mb file using bluetooth and resco showed the speed 20kbps........
So next time when you go out to meet your frnds you can transfer all their stuff at the lightning speed via WIFI file sharing......
Good Luck!!
How to browse the internet using Wi-Fi?
I have a new AT&T Tilt and I've just installed a WIFI access point on my home/office LAN. My WIFI laptop was simple to configure as member of the Windows WORKGROUP. I've been struggling with my TILT. Some questions:
1) Is this supposed to work?
2) How do you assign the TILT to a workgroup?
3) I can see other workgroup PCs from the TILT, but I cannot see the TILT from other PCs. I am able to ping the TILT from a PC both by ip address and by device name (which happens to be "tilt").
Thanks for any help,
From what I understand you want to be able to browse phone files over wifi?
Yes. On any LAN PC, I would like to click on "My Network Places" and see the WM6-Phone listed with the other WORKGROUP computers. Then I would like to be to click on it to browse its directorys. And also drag & drop files to/from the phone. Thanks.

Not sure that's going to work unless you can find some other way of connecting other than by using Activesync
I understand the "Not sure that's going to work..." part. I don't follow the "unless you can find some other way...". I'm not using Activesync (at the moment) I wish to use a WIFI Access Point to join a LAN WorkGroup. I call that "some other way". It would seem that this desire would be widely shared by the wider community of users. It's a logical thing to want to do. There are enough parameters to tweek that given the proper expertise, I would guess that you could connect anything to anything else. I just don't have the expertise so I thought I would pose the question...
As far as i know, windows mobile doesn't include a smb (file) server. You have only a client. This means that you can browse your desktops' shares from the phone but not the contrary.
Windows CE 5.0 and 6.0 actually have a smb server but i think this is not shipped with the Mobile variant.
Unless you find some 3rd party software of course (i don't know of any but i've never really looked for it).
Bye
EDIT: if you want to be able to share files in the PPC with the desktops in the network, you can install a FTP server in your PPC. Then you can use a ftp client on the desktop to browse the PPC.
Try this one: http://www.mochasoft.dk/freeware/ftpd.htm
Nice solution. Thank you.
Seeing LAN shares with Tilt
I have the same goal (to share both ways between Tilt and LAN), but some additional issues.Have had the Tilt for only one day, so forgive me for any dumb questions!.
Can't even see the LAN shares from the tilt (nor the other way around). The phone indicates it is connected to our WiFI, and other LAN PCs can see another's share \\Titan for eg., but when I type //Titan into the Tilt browser it says it can't connect to that. Any suggestions why?
I wondered if its a syntax problem. Seems the Tilt does not have a reverse slash (\), but I would think forward slash (/) should work equally well.
In some circumstances, the phone invites logging into a VPN, but we dont have one established on our LAN. Would this facilitate sharing files? Does setting one up require running a server or is a simple Peer to Peer network sufficient? If so, how do you set one up?
Once I am sure I hve a Wifi connection I will try the ftp client solution.
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

hi
Probably some newbie questions, please don't mind if they seem silly but i`m stuck
I wanna to connect my polaris to company network via wifi in order to transfer some files. At least it could be bluetooth
But HOW?
Internet connection works fine but i still cant see others computers
How to establish connection with other computers or (the best) with whole company network and then copy some files
any other way to easy wireless transferring files from pda to pc?
hey
no kidding
nobody transfer / share some files pc - pda?
Can VPN work
Can you setup a connection to a VPN network?
But that means your company network would need a VPN server.
Just talk to the people who log-in company network remotely, they would have an idea how this works.

hey i found this program after years of searching....it says it won't work right with windows 6.1, but it is working great in my Touch Diamond US version. just click on options and then start adding your shared folders on your server. type "//servername/sharedfoldername"
ok
i have found another solution
in Total commander in catalog \\Plugins\Lan you can map some discs in network. Its not so easy to enter the right name/path but after some time its possible. Works fine. Problem that you dont see mapped disc in tree.......
Other problem that you still dont see pda on pc..

its sounds interesting...
does it works wit TC? (does total commander see mapped drivers in tree?)
Its automatic -you map disc only once?
I'm sure this question must have been asked and answered before, but I have searched and can't find it, feel free to point me to the right topic.
I would just like to access the storage on my HD2 wirelessly on my wifi network at home. How do I get the HD2 to show up as a network drive?
Try MyMobiler or WIFI Remote Access http://www.julien-manici.com/windows_mobile_wifi_remote_access/
I don't think you can make it as a shared resource in the network, but you can always share folders from the pc and access them on the phone (for moving files from the pc to the phone and vice versa in case you give full access to the folder).
I hope it helps.
PS: I use resco explorer to access network content over wifi.
Wifi remote access as mentioned above, or theres also Mochasoft FTP server.
But I don't know of a network drive/samba style server.
