I'm wondering what the experience has been for people using Opera 8.6. I installed the free beta version months ago, which is working, and I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy the latest retail version.
Any Opera users care to comment on their experience?
Generally I find this a good browser but there a few problems which I must mention:-
1) One cannot configure it to store its Cache to SD card. There are ways around this but nothing out of the box.
2) For large web pages with graphics and annimations vertical scrolling becomes really painful as the page does not scroll smoothly with the vertical bar. This gets really really annoying at times.
3) There is a slight lag between pressing of a link and the browser responding. You tend to press the link repeatedly thinking the browser has not responded and then it hangs. However this is something you soon get used to so not that much of a problem.
4) Quite often it does not load the page fully and gets stuck towards the last bits of the page. This is more so for pages with annimations. The progress bar gets stuck when the page has almost been downloaded and only a small percent is left. You then have to refresh the page and usually the 2nd attempt gets you through the full page.
4) The worst problem for me which has really limited its use is that once you have used this it stops some other programs to start and you have to soft-reset. Typical examples are Netfront, Planmaker and Textmaker. After using Opera and having killed it these programs will often not start without a soft-reset.
As I said at the start it is still a good browser and so I am not mentioning the good things but these are just the glitches which seriously mar the user experience of an otherwise good product. In fact though I have a registered version I find myself using it less and less and prefering Netfront over it simply of some of the annoying bugs I mention.
Regards
I agree with smrz completely, and have suffered from the issues outlined, but I'd like to add:
- Opera 8.6 can't handle some pages very well (I'm thinking of the Yahoo pages where you need to log in). It just doesn't render them in any sort of useable fashion.
Having said this, I still use it as my main browser, and find that in combination with PIE, then I can do pretty much everything I want on the web.
Cheers,
Steve.
are there any differences between the beta version and the retail version?

Open opera.ini file, go to [User Prefs]. At the end of that paragraph, write that ligne
Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\x with x the folder you choosed for cache on your SD.
For french roms, Storage Card must be replaced by Carte de Stockage
Opera is not perfect, but is largely better than other mobile browers...
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure I will pay for the retail version at this point.
Re: the difference between beta version and latest retail version, I'm sure there are many and would depend on the beta version. Main one that comes to mind is that I understand the retail version has a tabbed browser interface while my old beta version does not.
I wonder if Opera mobile will ever support Java?
opera 8.5/8.6 does not support java & javascript?
what about vbscript?
Where do we copy the opera.dll
I am running a trial version. Have the cracked opera.dll file. Where do I copy this to in order to prevent the 30 days to run up?

Here's an idea: how about *paying* for it? I mean, it's only $24 or about 2% the RRP of an HTC Universal. Don't try to kid yourself that circumventing anti-piracy measures is anything other than stealing. If you use a cracked copy, you are a theif.
I agree I always buy software. I have 50+ apps on my IIs and all are paid for you, shouldn't try and steal money from hard working developers who are trying to make a living.
I am finding Opera 8.60 retail to be AWESOME!
In fact, I ditched the JasJar some months ago and have been using a JAM for some time. I only bought a new JJ cos of Opera on VGA. It's rendering most pages such as my online banking (which PIE cocked up completely), it zooms perfectly, and it's just amazing! If WM5 had come out with a decent broser on day one it would have driven operator ARPU's and internet usage. Now I have google with me wherever I go. I kind of had it on my JAM, but not really with that crappy low res screen.
This is a no brainer app and worth every cent!
Piracy
Nice thinking and have no objection. But if you got something for the first time you simply dont go about splashing money around. It is only fare that I want to make use of it, see & decide. If you check 8.6 is not the latest version it is an old version. By paying I would now be getting v9 (see I checked it and am planning to) but need to see if it is what I need / want.
Stereotyping aint really good. Peace anyway....
PS: Besides doing this kind of stuff is always the best way of learning the logic, structure of how a device works. And that is my main interest in these stuff. Not getting all for free. Thanks for your comments anyway...

I'm using Opera on the trial. 30 days is plenty of time to make your mind up. If you don't really use it enough to make up your mind in that time, then don't buy it. If you do, buy it. $24 really is next to nothing for a product. That wouldn't a decent sandwich, cake and a cup of tea!

They provide a trial for that purpose. If they didn't, I still wouldn't agree. Afterall, I can't try out a holiday before I buy it and if I don't like the terms, I can simple boycott the product.

I'd hardly call it stereotyping. Stereotyping is painting a group with a broad brush and, in doing so, encompassing more than rightfully fit the description. However, calling all pirates theives is not stereotyping as all piracy is theft.

I know I'm on a very high horse here, but I cannot and will not tolerate piracy. It *does* hurt people (developers, distributers, support staff, everyone in the chain and their families) and they only reason why it's not as widely regarded as wrong is because everyone knows they will more than likely get away with it. Steal Opera is no better than stealing a wallet or an item of jewellery or anything else. It's ALL theft.
I'm using an early beta that does not have the 30 day limit.
Am I stealing?
The reason I posted the question is because I am not averse to paying for a good finished product. It seems craigiecraig4 (if I have the name spelled right) would say that Opera 8.6 is a good finished product.
That is the type of opinion I was soliciting.
I think anyone who has a beta version of software on there device have in a way paid for it because they put there device on the line to test the product.

Hey all. I'm really new to HTC and PCC. I had a Nokia 6682 and new how to tweak it and everything. I'm lost with my Wizard though. Do I install programs and stuff just like a regular computer? What tweaks do you guys recommend I perform? I only use the phone for watching videos, listening to music, taking pics and video and of course talking on the phone. I have a PQI 2gb memory card and I just found out that I should've gotten a SanDisk instead. I read the WIKI, but I'm still kinda lost. Somebody teach the young grasshopper!!!!
PQY, SanDisk, Kingston ... - ... believe me: all of those cards are produced in one and the same factory in China!
About what you should do with your WIZ200: this question you should have asked yourself before buying it! It is a PDA, an organizer, a mobile computer which lets you do stuff on the go while away from your desk - and it has for sure its limits!
The Wizard is not the ideal device for watching videos! A little bit research before buying would have told you that! All through it is possible to watch videos; if it is 'enjoyable' is another question ...
Music:
yes, it plays! But already my SE K800i has a much better sound than the WIZ!
There are some cool games out there for PDA's which really run excellent on the WIZ! You can take a closer look at www.handango.com for that! They have also trial versions available for download!
Tweaks:
Some of them are nice but many produce even some issues on your device! So, be carefully by tweaking your WIZ and always ask yourself if that particular TWEAK is really necessary or of you could even live without that!
Am I able to have pictures and ringtones for certain callers and all that? I fell in love with the touchscreen stuff man. I couldn't help it. Plus I only paid $60 through cingular. I have 30 days to return it. Do you know of any phones that might be of interest and usefulness to me?

Ringtones and pictures for callers is no problem! Just check your contacts list in the phone and you will see it offers much more than nokia's symbian would ever be capable of!
About your second question: I have absolutely no clue what phones would be of interest for you! You might wanna figure that out by yourself? www.gsmarena.com
You da man! One last question though. Is there any way I can put P/W protection on my pictures and videos?

I am sure there is a way with 3rd party software. Maybe some real good FILE EXPLORERS are capable of that!
I just wonder why you need to put a password protection on your pic's? Do you rent your phone or give it to somebody from time to time? Then a better solution would be to work with 2 MiniSD cards: put your personal stuff on one SD and the public stuff on another one ...
SOme things i feel that are needed for new wizards.

^^^ that page lots of good stuff.
But the first thing thatmakes installing programs a breeze. is Cabviaacticesync
What it is. when you download the cab file(program) you want. you right click the cab file with your mouse. and there will be a new menu called cabviaacticesync. click that then folow the steps.
http://www.modaco.com/CABviaActiveSync-FREE-Edition-now-availableand33-t243034.html
Also Omapclock and Omapclock plus. you can download those sepratley. or you can download something called batterystaus that has ompa built in. really nice program. All free. dont overclock over 260. i leave mine at 240.
thats all i have for now.
skype me if you want help. toodeep2360
ALso put all your programs on your sd card. will let your wizard run faster. the only downside. is prgrams will start slower.
Thanks for all of your help. I'm gonna go through all these threads over the weekend. I just really gotta find a P/W program.
You better be carefully with OMAPCLOCK and BATTERYSTATUS! It does not really do any good and lots of people had problems with that! Just search this forum or others online!

I think you would be in a minority there Junner2003 - the majority of people on the forum with omap devices overclock their devices and have no problem - it certainly makes the device alot more responsive.
It makes skype useable, videos smooth etc...
It is very rare to cause any damage through overclocking and most stick around 240mhz.
I find the device fine for watching a movie
Even if I am in the minority - still sticking to my opinion!
I am glad so many people have no issues with it! Research in the web tells me another story! How ever, every1 makes his own choices - and I always try to keep my stuff as original as possible! Others like do change every single bit and byte - multiculti!
Have it your way!

Wrong. Between my 2 8125s and my brothers 2 8125s. overclocked to 240-273 we have no problems running them for a year now.
Yes there has been a few people who thought it was ok to overclock over 260.
and everyone has said not to overclock over 240-260.

I partially agree, I hate the slow stock roms (I think Junner2003 is on one(?)). But i used to use batterystatus and even clocked to 312 permanently for a while. The last version I tried froze my device and my current rom is quicker than anything else anyway.
Running the official German T-Mobile AKU3.3 Rom - performance is quite good - sure: videos are not enjoyable with the 195MHz but it is enough for everything else I do: some office work, internet, email, database, writing some software (and compile it later on a desktop) ... and a bit gaming!

i don't know about this "revue software" and the description of what it does is not very clear to me, but i have tested another tool that does the same thing (i suppose. i'm french so my english is not perfect) named trakax on a htc vox and it seemed fairly good for a slow device (200 cpu) and non-tactile.
it should be very cool on a decent pdaphone with good cpu.

I agree, it may be difficult, but when you see someone asking for a copy of a retail piece of software on here, insisting they have it for free, (as if that's a right), then find a near identical request on a warez site asking for the crack for the same software, its not difficult to see where that activity would lead to if we all took that stance.
WB
I don't have a problem paying for the apps that we use on our devices and i'm willing to pay a whole helluva' lot more but we should @ least have the trial option to see if it's worth it or even if its compatible with our devices. Most developers give you that trial because they stand by their product and they know it'll sell itself once the word gets out, so maybe them not giving a trial offer says something about their product. Just my opinion.
I've done trials of and loved:
Resco Exlorer
Memmaid
AEButton
Ultimate Launcher
Vito Screen Capture
Phone Weaver
...And paid for:
Resco
Memaid
AEButton
UL
Vito
Phone Weaver
It wouldn't even occur to me to use a cracked copy. Weird since I've used warez for some windows PC software, but being on a forum like this you see how the programmers are good people, just like me (only smarter) and it puts a face to the theft and I wouldn't consider doing it. Now I don't do cracked stuff for PC software either. I guess its part of growing up.
Anyway, I think there are a lot of ppl like me that if they like a trial they will be HAPPY to buy it.
I have just found this video!
Hi
I found a video of Revue.
It seems to be fantastic even with an application to manage the files with the PC!

I want to test this program for my HTC Touch, but I canĀ“t download it from anywhere.
Anyone has this program?
Can you tell me if it is fast and useful?
Anyone knows where can I download Revue?
Thank YOU ALL
I just took a quick glance at the site you listed and looks like something I used to use on my Palm, I think you can use this for free, don't completely remember, but know I never paid for it. I remember now, you have to keep your pc online and you can access it for free, think that was the deal, and you had to pay to store your files online to access them while your pc was offline.
Anyway to the point its Avvenu, check it out.

Hello.
I have a week to present my homework, an app for WM5/WM6.
Description:
Two screens.
Screen one: a Calendar showing one month and arrows to move to other months. And a button to take you to screen two.
Scrren two: a list of whatever (let say, accesories for X7501 currently on stock) that feeds of a DB. And a button to go back to screen one.
So basically is creating a DB (item, stock) and a calendar.
I would need you to give me:
1. The code with commentaries (*/this is the button to change month*/ etc).
2. Your paypal account
Who can do it? For how much?
Thanks!
dude that is so cheating. why you gonna pick building an app for wm if you dont even know how to build one.
Hello.
1. The teacher was not supposed to ask that of us.
2. I know how to make an app, but not that one. I can make basic stuff, like coin toss, dice roll, among other stuff. I could learn to program that, but I do not have time, I sleep like 4 hours a day... learning to do that would mean 10 hours.... I don't have 10 hours.
3. I'm not going to live by making apps for WM.
4. Somebody could use some extra dollars. And some might even enjoy building that.
I don't think it's such a bad Idea.
Well.... once again, any one can help me with that simple app?
Regards.
Maybe you should've started this a lot longer before the deadline? I can't really poke holes given that I had to do a 3 minute composition (for my music GCSE) in one night...

All:
I'm asking for help, and expecting replies about "I can help" or "here's this links that will help" or a Private Message with something along those lines.
I know you can reply with "that's wrong", but could you please not obstaculize?
And could you please not reply with "it's better for you to learn" because it's not and you do not particularly care about me learning to build a DB or a calendar.
And it's not like I'm a greedy student who offers $5 or $10 USD. It's a job and it's better paid.
Once again.... anyone that might be kind enough to help?
Regards.
I'm curious as to how much you're willing to pay. A low-level code monkey can probably get $20/hr. You're better off looking at how tene implemented PCM calendar (or similar).
huh? http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/obstaculize
Sorry, English is not my first language.... I meant something like "not-help", not as much as deter, restrain, discourage... just like being an obstacale...
I'll prefer to let the programmer set the price for the job done, not by the hour of course... and then we'll talk about it.
But probably it will be way more than $20 per hour of real efficient work.
Go download eMbedded Visual Basic from the MS Website:
Not that I want to discourage developers getting money, but the fact is, the two things you are discussing (Forms and calendar) are already available as code samples in eMbedded Visual Basic. Most, if not all developers know this...
So basically, if your teacher doesn't understand that making this project is as simple as writing your own name, than it won't matter whether you cheat or not. Besides, you will still have to make the program yourself, even with the two code samples.
The calendar is called DateTimePicker
And from memory, the page sample is just called Form
Hope This Helps
This is just a Test to show you what i have made..if this is the kinda stuff you want..send me the details for the About page
NOTE : This requires Internet Connection to be activated before Starting the application
See attached
Jadel:
Well now there's some help. It actually got me started with the calendar and the app itself.
You can watch progress here http://www.tech-medellin.com/TempUploads/advance.wmv
Ather90:
And that's even better. More like I was hoping for, unfortunately I lost hope with first replies and started myself.
Any way, perhaps you could help me with accesories. I've watched what you did and it's great, but not what I'm looking for... although I could add it...
The teacher asked for a database stored in the app (not updatable nor modificable by user). A list must be created based on the DB. I would fill it with data (I actually sell devices and accesories)
Can you help with that? For how much?
Thanks!

Some apps (Twitdroid is a good example) alerts you if there's a new update; and most apps have contact details for the developer, so maybe drop them an email and ask for some auto update code to be added into your favourite apps? Bummer though, you still have to go into the market to update them.

Either way I don't see any real reasons to not use it except that you should know it may show a beta version. The updates are fast usually everytime I open it there is at least one program on there.

True, I suppose it is a matter of personal preference. Since I only have a half dozen apps installed on my G1, it's rather trivial to just check the download list. I balance that against having yet another app installed, not to mention having my app installation habits data-mined by aTrackdog.

I am not a developer but can see a potential for an exploit on this maybe? Sending out info isn't ever really a good idea. Even if it's set to only send out this and that data, I have seen exploits take advantage of less.
Both valid points, but then again look at the stuff I can't uninstall LOL that can send out just as much info. Everything is a risk, and honestly maybe application mining my G1 is a good thing, might lead to more big name developers wasting money to make quality apps for cheap/free. Never know might make MS want to make an office suite... or better yet... openoffice doing it.

Everything is a risk, and honestly maybe application mining my G1 is a good thing, might lead to more big name developers wasting money to make quality apps for cheap/free. Never know might make MS want to make an office suite... or better yet... openoffice doing it.

Yeah I wouldn't really hold my breath on OpenOffice for Android. Aside from the fact that most desktop apps have to be completely retooled to function in a mobile context, i'm sure Sun isn't too happy about Google brewing up Dalvik based on Java (which quite directly competes with J2ME). Dataviz is already working on an Android version of DocsToGo.
Of course if Google were to put more of their engineers on Android/mobile development, maybe we could see Google Docs for Android. Let's hope those Christmas Bonus Dreams lead to more apps Googlers make in their 20%.

Isn't openoffice made publically? (not the source but the actual development is by the general public) wouldn't that mean if enough got an android they could do it? LOL
And I bust up over the G1 for all Google employees. But then again that article made it sound like every employee normally gets 20,000 for Christmas *cough*bull*cough* I bet only the high ups got anywhere close to that and probably the lowers got 100 dollars and maybe some free software or something.

Actually it is an open source project. However project leaders have very broad discretion to guide the direction a project takes. A good example would be the Android Open Source Project.

Yeah the average Googler received a $1000 holiday bonus last year.
wow 1000 dollar bonus... that is really good... but I understand why that is cut in half this year especially with the way the economy is.
Im not new to WinMo and I'v had the HD2 for about 3 days now but coming from Android like most of u, and was wondering what solutions you have found for software. To me the Windows Market SUXs big time right now. nothing good worth downloading (free anyways) and i have noticed theres not manny, to no choices when it comes to photo editing or manipulating software
where can i get some software to make the phone more usable. seems very limited right out of the box for me and i wanna "Android it up" a bit if its at all possible... and i dont mean install android apps
i miss the:
photo editing apps in general, not just android ones
googlesky - i know, i know, its a google app but something similar should be out there.. no?
googlemaps - (see googlesky note) (winmo doesnt have turn by turn on the included googlemaps...). however, i dont blame google for the limitations, it is their software.
extra messaging apps
a working barcode scanner - very useful app
any type of flash?
so whats everyone doing/using??
thank

Take a look here for what you need, this is the real marketplace for WM 6.5.x!
For Flash Skyfire browser helps, and Smaberg has a version of Opera 10 with flash enabled.
I know there are several barcode readers, don't use it, but they're available, as are alternate messaging apps/UIs.
Don't know about photo editing apps, but I'm sure they must be out there too...
Windows mobile is a far easier platform to get software from. You just search the internet, as you would for PC software. You can always look on xda too, and remember that if you do a search in the HD2 forum, you're only searching a very small portion of the site. You're better searching the whole forum. Wacky.banana kindly posted a thread about searching. It's stickied in this forum.
Hi, You could try http://freewarepocketpc.net. It also has it's own app that you can install on your HD2 to download applications directly to it. Yes the WinMo apps are fragmented all over the place with no single point of download. A lot are crap, but the same can be said for Android and iPhone. You hear stories that developers are giving up on WinMo 6. For bar codes i use i-nigma and Mobiletag but they are far from perfect.
Not sure about your impression that most of the HD2 users come from an Android background, interesting point of view A lot are interested in porting Android to it though
NZtechfreak thanks for the replies, trying out the skyfire browser right now.
johncmolyneux, im far from a windows noob, but for this phone i have searched the web, both through yahoo and google, have searched through forums and all the software i find either isnt compatible or i dont find what im looking for exactly. As i posted above, picture editing software should be common but there is not one single app available that runs properly.

Thanks for that link - installed the appstore from that site. Cool
As someone moving from Android, I've been a little disappointed thus far too.

i didnt mean all but alot of us jumped onto the bandwagon in hopes that android will be available to us in the near future
and i wouldnt say im disapointed with the HD2, in fact i think its awesome! its just different from what i've been using for a year and a half. but this phone has features that would make it hard to go back to android hardware so lets load up the sofware and see what happens!

yeah i have seen the evo but that's coming to Sprint not to t-mobile so my options are a bit limited cause I'm still under contract with them. i got hopes that the evo will help with the development of Android on the HD2.

Resco Photo Manager - not free but not expensive either and has reasonably good photo editing capabilities. Certainly enought for mobile devices, given the assumption that hardcore editing would be done on a PC
