HTC are a pile of pants! - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

This is quite shocking and i hate it.
you hear sooooooooo many great things about their phones until you actually own one, then you realise that they make them with substandard parts - im definately getting an Eten device next.
my spv c500 had to be sent back because it got dust under the screen, now my m600's speaker has decided it would just die on me........which is crap considering in all my life i have never ever had a nokia phone do anything at all like this.
so now i gotta wrangle with orange to get a replacement.

Seem's you've been unlucky, HTC devices are though more sensitive and delicate devices. As with most things the more technology you cram in the casing, the more likely it will go wrong at some point. The most reliable phone I ever had was a Nokia 6110i it even bounced when I dropped it, but compared with what I can now do with my old HTC Universal, or Gigabyte g-Smart, I would never go back.
As long as it was a fault not caused by user damage, you should be able to argue a replacement under fit for purpose. I've heard lots of good stories about Orange tech support and customer care, and hopefully your luck will improve.

My M600 speaker died too...it's currently in for repair.

@ jmdrizen where did u get your g smart i128

My jamin speaker died too--still in repair(Imate US) waiting for parts.

Speaker on my m600 has been repaired also.
Orange claimed that the audio circuit had to be replaced. That makes sense to me because sometimes the speaker would work again for a few seconds if I tapped on the back of the device.
It is **** that it happened, but it is the most beautifull device I have had so far and I just love its functionality and formfactor.

MDA Pro woes..anyone experienced these issues?

Hi,
My 1st MDA Pro crashed a lot, so T-Mob replaced it as it was reported within the 28 day period.
The 2nd MDA had the big metal cover bit sticking out, so it scratched me when I used it. T-Mob replaced it.
The 3rd MDA had a knackered hinge, and made big creaky-click sound on opening, so T-Mob replaced it.
The 4th MDA has a blown pixel in the camera, otherwise great, and I am sure the cycle will continue.
I am wondering if it is:
1. Quality control is not good enough in HTC
2. MDA Pro's are not QC'd well
3. The couriers use them as footballs
Anyone else had big problems like this?
Joe
My first MDA Pro was faulty as well. In my case the "a" key when depressed didn't always show - faulty hardware issue.
I went back to the shop who replaced it with a brand new one still boxed and sealed and I have had no problems since. Be careful with refurbs that is my advice.
J
they told me specifically that they didn't send out refurbs.
i couldn't see any evidence of previous activity on them, but now i got an xda exec, and have copied my t-mob ext rom over to it.
i did the jan 06 99 pound offer on data 5, making total outlay 210 quid.
i will get a vario from t-mob since they don't want to give me a decent mda pro and perhaps flog one of them.

 They certainly send out "refurbs" cos I've had some...
External speaker (back of screen earpiece) stopped working. Sent phone back to t-mobile. After 2 weeks I got my phone back apparently repaired and tested... was it hell! Still had same fault!
Send phone back again. Another 2 weeks pass and I get a "new" phone (it had a different IMEI so I presume it was a replacement)... guess what? Same bloody fault!
They then try and tell me that I have to send the phone back for repair again! I politely point out that they've had 2 chances with no effect and in the end they relent and say they'll send out a "new" phone and take my current one away... presumably someone's gonna get landed with it after they "fix" it!
The "new" phone came without any packing and although it worked I was far from impressed by the fact that the hinge was really loose, it was scratched, and it had a 2 inch long crack next to the screen! FFS....
After another few phone calls they swapped the knackered phone for a sealed boxed replacement. So far this one's fine...
in fairness, all my t-mob replacements were fully boxed and sealed.
didn't make them good devices tho; each has been dodgy.
im comparison, the 1st xda exec is fine and i like the blue backlight. i also like the price ;-)
im gonna get a vario from t-mob or something as they are not capable of sending me a decent mda pro. if they insist on the replacement cycle more i will ebay it boxed up and sealed.

Contact Details for HTC/Repair

I have dropped my XDA exec (very lightly) and the damn screen has broke. I am surprised at how delicate the damn thing is, when i had my XDA2s i threw that about and nothing!!
The part that is damaged is the LCD section
Anybody got any numbers for repair centres? I have rang o2 but they want £185.00 on 01603269927
Try HTC, but I remeber it being cheaper to buy a C500 (sim free) than get it repaired!
http://www.htceurope.com/
I tried to get my Exec repaired by HTC Europe. Sent it to them as well. They sent it back saying they could not as it was different from the Orange and T-Mo versions.
See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38822
How about SBE? They do Jasjar repairs, not sure about other models though.
SBE 0871 2000 995
Thanks so far. it costs £379 for a new XDA exec from o2, im going to give ema call and see what the other comapnies say.
i have noticed that there is a BIG void in PDA repairs, maybe a new business venture
My screen cracked also when dropped from only 18 inches onto a soft linolium floor. I couldn't believe it. I have never seen a screen that was so fragile.
I bought a junk JASJAR from Ebay and swapped screens myself. I am a pretty good technican. It works fine now.
I have a broken JASJAR for sale for $200 US. It has a broken screen and a bad motherboard. Everything looks physically good though.
I cracked my wizard two weeks ago or something like that, i have had alot of pda phones but haven't cracked a display yet on them and they have been with me on alot of wierd partys.... So said that you can't use warranty on that, we should do something about this
If i crack my Qtek 9000 im gonna start crying
This is scary. I'm thinking maybe I should superglue mine to my hand. I've grown pretty attached to it anyway.
HTC Europe 0871 223 0217- all you get is a damn answering machine - crap
SBE 0871 2000 995 - they said that they do not touch o2 PDAs for some odd reason!!
any suggestions or will i have to fork out £185.00 HELP!!!
I have know some other people who have had the PDA screens damaged on exec, i dropped my old XDA2s on the road at least 3 times, no screen damage, and i drop the damn EXEC on my CAR HANDBRAKE - lightly, and the screen damages
luck of the draw
i think it is just luck whether you get a good one or not. when I bought mine the screen broke after one day. it cracked round the corners when i turned the screen. i knew how dodgy the hinges and lcds were as well so i was being extra gentle with it as well. since having it replaced the new one has taken a bit of a beating and is still ok. touch wood. i think my hinge will go though, or at least something other than the screen just to rub it in.
where did u get yours fixed from? and how much?
Ahh sack it, paid £265.00 for a new xda mini S

Is the Universal worth $200 ?

Like a lot of people I've broken the mini-usb port in my Uni, thank goodness for Blue tooth,. I called the HTC service number to see if I could get them to re solder the port back on they said I need a new motherboard. My Uni works fine except that the batteries are slowly dying, but luckily I have a stand alone battery charger. In a nut shell the mother board is $200 is it worth it? There are so many new phones coming out that it really doesn't make sense to spend the money on it, but on the other hand rumors that TMO 3G network may support it give me a good reason to keep it. I truly like this phone and really don't want to give it up quite yet, so I ask you what would you do?
Oh yeah when I asked the service rep if was a G3/G4 board he had no clue the good part about it is that the US service center is in my town so I could drop it off and pick it up almost the same day.

Of course it worth!!!
Go for it!
how bad is it? and where do you live? send me a pm if you want to keep it private. the reason i ask is if the pads on the board are ok, resoldering the connector is easy. for an experienced tech takes 5 minutes with a coffee break in the middle. lol. if you'd rather, i'll fix it for a lot less. let me know. i'll need to see pictures to confirm too.
Yes,
Soldering is quite easy. If you don't know how to do it, show it to someone with soldering experience.
The other choice is eBay: I bought my second unit for 142 Euro, which is about 200 US$. That was the price for a full functioning phone!
You might try to buy one with a broken screen for much less and exchange the board yourself.
I think 200 US$ for a new board is too expensive.
Cheers,
vma
If its working it surely worth it..
Yeah, I'll keep it...
When I talked to the HTC rep he said it was $200 to replace the mother board; but another rep called me back and said that HTC no longer supports it. The North American repair center is in my area, so they said take it over there and see, i haven't had time but i will just to see what the quote will be. as for the device itself, it still works I need a new battery barely holds a charge for the entire day, but it still an awesome device. But there are some new ones coming out ie. SonyX1 Eten's dual sim phone the Omnia and a host of others
I've had it for about 2 years and very little problems. Thanks for everyone support and will definitely keep it.
You're with T-Mo US, personally, I'd get a G1. $180, and it has Android... It's sickkkk.

Yeah, Android looks good but I've learned a long time ago wait for all the bugs to go away before diving in. When Android has a form factor like the Uni I'll be all over it, I'm not a slider fan.
Me neither - either a candybar or a mini-laptop for me. Repair enough slides and flips not to ever want to touch one. As far as Universals are concerned, it's all in the definition. Once you will stop thinking of it as a cellphone and instead think of it as a mini-laptop and introduce it as such to your friends - you'll feel the advantages. You won't believe how many comments along the lines of "Wow, that's a tiny laptop you have there" and "How cool is that" I get every time I get my JasJar out. And then, of course, I go on and on about how it's so much better than a laptop, how I have everything I need not to use my computer, how I chat to my friends overseas on SKYPE, and on and on... haha
No doubt it is worth every bloody cent.
HTC customer service sux...
So this will be my last rant on this subject. I call customer service to get an RA# I explained to the rep what the problem is (note I have an O2 Exec in North America), she said that they didn't support that model, So I explained that its the same thing as the Tmobile MDA Pro at which point she says they support that model and gives me the RA#, but explains that they may not have the parts for it? I go to the repair center give them the RA# and wait after about 20mins. this lady comes out and says that we don't work on that phone but will have somebody else talk to me. The Product manager comes out and tells me that my phone is European and they don't work on it , at this point I tell him that its a MDA Pro with just a different housing he still disagrees that its a different phone that its not an MDA Pro(I'm in disbelief) so I asked if he had a motherboard for an Imate Jasjar or a Qtek or Vodaphone, basically every derivative of the Universal. He still argues that those are all different phones and they won't work, well since I was on my lunch break and did want to get pissed off i explained to him that he needs to understand the previous product line and that when I come back I want to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about.
I too can repair the USB connector for you, I'm UK based.
If you want it fixing let me know.

Sad Day - HTC Diamond 2 is gone...for repairs

Well...today, for no reason whatsoever, my speaker went dead. it had been crackling (a few other threads about that) but suddenly, no sound. loud speaker works fine...infact everything else too...
so, it's off to get a new speaker put in right now with HTC (5 day workaround...like that is going to happen)
but i'd like to know if anyone else has been having issues with Speakers dying on them/crackling. I am considering taking it up with HTC if there are a few people who seem to have the same problem(s). (i got them to give me a brand new mTeoR 3 years ago because of the joystick not working properly...you just have to complain/petition enough!)
Sorry to hear this!
Are you doing this through insurance.
If not, would you mind letting this guy know what steps you took to initiate your repair?
Thanks!
The faulty speaker seems to be a common problem, I had my phone replaced because mine was crackling too. I went to the store where I got the phone only 2 or 3 days after I bought it and after demonstrating the issue they gave me a new Topaz right away.
mine has been in the service center 3times and today i sent it again.
firs time the phone wouldnt connect to the computer. they replaced the board.
got it back and the phone was scratched. sent it in again and they replaced the digitlizer and outer housing. got it back and there was a shadow when i took pictures. this time i sent it in and i mentioned that there was a lot of distortion when the earpice was in use. i told them to replace the phone and they told me that htc is not a company that replaces phones. seriously i will never buy an htc phone again. this my first time and i actually liked it more than my iphone but with all these problems the iphone is simply better. if you have owned an apple product you will know that if they cant fix it they will replace it.

whilst i agree with many of your other points regarding HTC customer service (they treat the devices like crap) i have to point out that your comment regarding apple is FALSE.
I had BOTH my ipods (older generations) returned to me with new hard drives in, but brand new scratches all over them. Apple gave me so much grief, i swore (at them/to myself) never to buy an apple product again.
as my post above says, my Diamond has gone in to be serviced (in the UK, although i live in Germany...sigh) so i will comment on how that goes when the phone is returned.
ALSO: HTC *did* replace a phone for me once (after i faked a story about leaving the country soon, and needing the phone NOW! )

the thing is that i live in the usa and i have told htc many times to replace the phone because they cant fix it + its cheaper to just replace the device rather than mess around with it and replace all the parts one by one.i also told them that dust was getting into my screen and when i received the device the dust was still there. my iphone had this problem and i took it to apple store and they just gave me a new one( non referbrished) i don't know how apple treats costumers out of usa but here they treated me much better then any company.

I don't think Tmo will be sending you a replacement since you got it through CL. I'd suggest calling up HTC directly and seeing if they can help you.
I've come to believe there is no hinge issue. Yes, I've been brainwashed.
I doubt tmo is going to replace a phone bought from cl, this is a risk you take when buying this way. The hinges on mine do the "auto open/close" thing too but in the month I have had it it has not been an issue. The hinge itself is strong just not spring loaded.... non issue.
Spotty service you can do 1 kof 2 things, 1 temp root and do the manup themed rom I found it more stable or 2 do the ota update I did both and the update is better for service....

I am on my second G2.. and I can confirm that this second has a much crappier hinge. The hinge on my first phone would spring open or closed. This new one doesnt snap into place like the first one. I will be sending mine back. Not sure if I am going to get a new G2 or a mytouch.
I bought a motorola cliq on craigslist 2 months after the person had purchased it. But it still had the 1 year manufacture warranty from first purchase date. I dont know if the border will be an issue but the purchase will not be an issue. They have the record from the IMEI number.

You should try getting the mannual update link on this forum. I did it yesterday, and since, I have not had any reboots, nor freezing that require battery pull. Signal strength is much better, being that I barely get signal at my desk, and now I can actually hold a conversation. Also, battery life seems to have improved a bit...where I was getting maybe 40% by Noon, it's 4:00 PM as I am writting this and I have 32% left.....

I have an issues...I have never been able to be hypnotized.....much less brain washed....my hinges still suck!!!!!
I just purchased the thin plastic rubberized cover for the phone (I think you have the same one) bcs the OEM T-Mo gel is very heavy...I think that had something to do with making the hinge problem worst.
It's really not a non-issue, except for the fact that I paid $250 for this phone plus hipping and taxes and I really find the hinge to be a POS...and not really acceptable at those prices. Now with that said, It really annoys me when I walk I can actually hear the phone "slapping" as I take strides....that really gets under my skin!!!
T-Mo will not stand by the product as defective, that pisses me off even more...they know that they sold a defective product and now are calling it a design feature.... I wonder what would have happened if Toyota said that about their break issue.....lol!

Couldn't have said this better, kudos to you, man the hinges are defective! Seriously I can't believe the people who agree that its a feature lmao, yea let toyota said the break issue was a feature too, only imagine... lmaoooo. But its just a phone who cares right let people pay their money and that's it, yea iight I want this hinge issue solve by htc or tmo I'm sending it back htc so they can put stronger magnets on the device. In case y'all didn't know someone found weak magnets on the G2 with a paper clip I think on the sides of the keyboard I read this on a tmo forum like three people found the magnets. Well I guess ima send their piece if ****ty hinge G2 for a fix and they better put stronger magnets
Tmo has been a total disappointment on this device for me. Can't believe they're trying to be like apple with the iphone 4 as they refused to admit it was a design defect/flaw and the phone just wasn't been hold the right way lmaoooo. Things like mass production of defective device can happen guys just because the majority of G2 got this problem doesn't mean it was ment to be like this. Look at toyota, do you think the break issue was a feature?
That's cool that's a lovely feature a car that has a not always functional break, yea and they targeted for crazy people if a normal people buys it and they don't like our new feature they can return their car. Its the spontanious break feature, your breaks may not work at times and at times it will, enjoy our new feature it is targeted for people who love to die

No kidding.....I sent back my first phone for two reasons....the hinge was absolutely loose, and multiple freezes a day, with at least one batt pull a day!
They sent me a second phone....I really tried to deal with the issues, but I called (Day 14th), they told me that my Buyers remorse period had already ended, that there was nothing they could do about the hinges nor the reboots!!!! I received my phone on Oct 15th, on the 29th I called to have it replaced. They told me that the 14th day had been the 28th, bcs they count the delivery date as the first day....I pretty much lost it at that point and told the gal that she was full $#it!!!! I told her that it was like saying that the day a bay is born, they are already a day old!!!!
I am certainly beginning to doubt TMO claim for #1 on customer service....I seem to the same lame service I had with ATT when I left them 10Yrs ago!...i guess not sucking like ATT is the new definition of great cust serv....shish!!!

Wow how does the delivery day count as day one SMFH you still was on your remorse period is just been 14 days since you got the device they are so full of it, if this was to happen to me all I would've lost it even worst than you did
All I can say is
1.they really messed up badly on this device: hinges are crap, nothing they can do about that for those who already have the crappy hinges but exchange for crappier or better hinges
2. They're trying to cover their **** up by brainwashing people to believe the hinges are built that way, I feel bad for those who were brainwashed.
3. Tmo badly fail to explain the storage to people before they realese the phone. It does have a 4gb internal mem but the thing is due to froyo the memory has a limit for downloading apps, mytouch 4g and galaxy s phones are also showing the 1.15 gb available mem even tho they obviously come with much more. Damn was that really hard to explain before the device launch! But they better learn from this.
4. This phone probably has the most exchanges and returns in tmo history. And the saddest part is that is only due to the hinges, for the most part and for the storage, some people were very angry at this I could tell from visiting numerous forums regarding the storage. I really didn't care much for storage tho I knew there mustve been an explanation for this and there was, some one took the device apart and found the mem to be a 4gb.
5. Could've they avoid this? Yes maybe if they explain storage, and made sure device was better built on hinges they wouldn't be experiencing these issues. Some even found magnets on the device on the sides of the keyboard, this means that they used the wrong magnets.

I think this hinge issue is crazy, I mean yea what a great feature so it was basically made so it opens easily LOL I makes me imagine tmo making cars and me buying a car that has loose doors that would open on a turn lmao, and the excuse for that would be: this is a brand new feature that will allow you to open your car door easier than ever, no need to sturggle opening your door just barely pull the handle and it'll smoothly open lmfao, I only laugh at the people who believe tmo on this. That's a lovely feature

thanks for the responses guys, the seller agreed to refund me the money. I'm wondering if I should get another g2 after seeing all these complains
To everybody including PandaBanana I agree there's a hinge issue. Except in my case probably not that serious. I don't hold my phone upside down and when I do to show people the problem it barely hangs down as much as other people. Its unfortunate but I would rather this then the phone be even more bulkier if they would've went with a regular slider mechanism. Especially since I was an original iphone user I can say I'm mostly satisfied. Battery and the android keyboard is my only concerns. I like the hacker friendliness with the OS and I must say besides the hinges which is not bad on mine I'm really satisfied with the build quality. If anybody doesn't believe me about the hinge problems I can take pics and show y'all.

You mean you hinges are tight and they don't pop open when they're held upsidedown?....
Lucky Guy...........
Regarding the spring thing. Is there really some visible spring in sight?
Total Fail.
While the G2 is snappy and fun to play with, it's a piece of crap. The amount of problems that people are having with hardware and software is just ridiculous.
If you're thinking of upgrading to the G2, don't so it!
I went back to my Nexus One and couldn't be happier.
Screw you TMobile and your weak-hinged, missing-memory, daily-crashing, dead-pixel piece of crap phone!
I think it's HTC, it's not all T-Mobile's fault. After all this phone is marketed as the desire z in europe. What a shame this phone is in my opinion. I will be selling it soon. Such a great build quality: brushed aluminum with silicon coated plastic, but with loose, wobbly hinges. I find using the hardware keyboard too uncomfortable for daily use because of the hinges. I'll continue my wait for the perfect android phone. Or perhaps if the iphone does come to t mobile, I'll settle for it.

Total Fail.
While the G2 is snappy and fun to play with, it's a piece of crap. The amount of problems that people are having with hardware and software is just ridiculous.

You win the "retard of the day" award, I say day and not week because I'm confident you'll top this one shortly.

LOL too bad you got a dud but the truth the G2 is a successful phone and another win for HTC. What are you basing this speculation on? I doubt very much that the return rate is above what to be expected for a new smart phone. Here's advice for androidfeen809 - get an iPhone - no hinge problem!
