Hi
Has anybody migrated from the XdaIIs, to the Wizard? is it worth it, or would it mean downgrading to something inferior?
I'm thinking about replacing my blue Angel by the Wizard, but i'm not sure if it's worth it.
Any views very very welcome!
Cheers
I migrate forom Dell X50v and Nokia 6630 on Qtek 9100. Nice! I wondeful!!!

huh?
i'd rather have a wizard than a blue angel.. but i guess if you had a BA then it might not be that much different to justify the upgrade... maybe if the phone was free or cheap.
Wizard is smaller, compacter, keyboard is loads better, but the wizard is a lot slower
thanks - very helpful.
The wizard on TMobile UK is free on Web'n'walk 200, so that's fine.
Do you use avantgo or pocket informant on your wizard? Is it a problem with the slower processor speed?
I've just gone from a Blue Angel to a Wizard. Wizard is much better
Its a lot more reliable, feels much smaller and the keyboard is outstanding compared to the BA.
Just my opinion.

I'm not sure where the lots slower comes from, because I find mine just as fast as my Mini, and the Mini has a faster processor than the IIs.
That is unless you install that crap at hard reset. I didn't, and have a clean device
On my device I have:
* TCPMP
* Total Commander
* PHM Regedit and PPC Plus
* SPB GPRS and Pocket Plus
* Opera Mini (MIDlet one)
* MS Stock Scramble (MS Games Pack)
* Monopoly
* Macromedia Flash ActiveX
* AvantGo 5.7
* Skype 1.2 Beta
* Agile Messenger (the free one)
* AE Uptime
* PocketRAR
I have all this installed on the internal ROM with 12.5Mb free.
I came from a PDA2k and think the Wizard is a much better device. As already stated it's seems to be a more reliable device. Much better keyboard. One handed browsing in landscape (with keyboard open) is also good. I don't really notice is being much slower, but maybe that's just me.
BA to wizard
was always very happy with teh BA (qtek 9090) except the way you have to soft reset every now and then (bless), the battery falls out whenever it wants to (less forgiveable) and the person on the other end of the phone can't hear you.
Oh, and it's like carrying a small brick, and I never use the slide out keyboard.
Do any Wizard users notice an improvement on any of these fronts, and does Tomtom 5 work ok (I assume it has a smaller screen than BA).
Many thanks
Hi pounana
Yes, all of those problems with the blue angel you note are fixed in the wizard, plus the bluetooth is light years better. ano conflicts wit wi fi either. as for tomtom, I am running 5.1 that I transferred form the supplied SD card to a mini SD that fits the wizard. Beyond the Tech on this forum has a Wizard blog with detailed install instructions. I was lucky though, as mine loaded and installed automatically no probs..
As for sceen, yes it is smaller, but very serviceable !
Hope that helps

Same here...so far very good!!!
double double ditto supersized
This is what I wanted from a phone: something phone sized, that also had a good camera and usable PIM/comms functionality.
I considered the universal, but it's too big (like the BA is) so I'd not carry it everywhere. Consequently, as a phone, it failed...
The Wizard is the right formfactor for my phone... I like it.
Why should we not let jasjar get involved?
It got 2 camera's video conferencing, bigger and twistable screen, yeah yeah yeah.,
I wished i had a wizzard to, but i will not sell my BlueAngel to get one,
for only a better keyboard, and somewhat better camera
Maybe in the future i will get one, but i think their to expensive to buy right now,

Well the reason may well be expalianed by your signature block...
I see you have a highly customised configuration that you probably spent hours (if not weeks and months like I did  ) to get it to a state where you had decent functionality that was fairly stable.
Now take the wizard out of the box, charge the battery, switch it on and you have it right away, only better!!
Now I realise that I can never get all those "ROM cooking" hours back and some of it was really quite fun (in a masochistic kind of way  ) but now it just works and I can get on with life!
Whatever floats your boat though... although I think us wizard owners are secretly starting to miss cooking our own ROMS already!!

Hello to all..
I am a newbie here and I really dont know anything about these pocketPC's..All i want to say is, I am crazy about mobiles and I hav my own mobile forum too for the Nokia. Currently I own a 6600 and 6630. I only use the Nokia S60. But this time, I wanna try out a PPC..I Really dont anything about PPC's..I will hav to learn from here..
I am really getting confused which one to buy..I want help frm you professionals..Shall i go for the Wizard or Blueangel??
I found dat wizard has 3 advantages over the BA
1)Camera
2)Keyboard
3)Weight and Looks
The only disadvantage of the wizard is the
1)processor speed
2)64MB RAM..whereas the blueangel has 128MB RAM
So we can say that the major disadvantage of the KJAM over the PDA2k is the speed of the phone and opening of applications..
Please let me know about the other advantages and disadvantages of the wizard over the blueangel.
Also tell me about the sound quality and volume of the wizard..Is it 3D sound and loud ??
I like the wizard..It looks good too..But the only thing disappointing me is the processor..It has a 200mhz processor which is kinda slow as compared to the BA..The BA has 400 mhz processor..So do you ppl think the speed really differs?? And please let me know which one u all prefer me buying??
Thank you..
Please help me in choosing the best one..and tell me the CONS and PROS of both over each other
I am currently running a ba with wm5 on it and really like it, but am thinking of getting a wizard too but for the edge technology. The processor worried me too until I did some reading. The TI Omap 850 is a dual core type processor, which should show no real speed diff from the 400mhz that is in the ba.

Really thanks for replying..I think ill go for the K-jam.
I had a blue angel, a magician and now the Wizard.
I like the wizard very much.
Blue Angel:
Pros: quick, big screen, internal wifi (crap reception)
Cons: bulky, not comfortable in the pocket, heavy, keyboard not comfortable for lot's of typing - after a while I reverted back to the virtual keyboard, bluetooth worked TERRIBLE !!!! - lot's of noise and static - tried 3 different BA devices and 5 different BT headsets - all carp. No bluetooth voice dialing - major disadvantage. Not stable all the time, had to reset from time to time which irritated me. Terrible camera (!)
Magician:
Pros: lighter then the BA, size was reasonable, quick as the BA
Cons: no keyboard, small screen, bluetooth still crap, no BT voice dialing, no WM5, No wifi, bad camera, no so great handsfree speakerphone
Wizard:
Pros: acceptable size, great keyboard, wifi on board (802.11G - reception signal strength could be better - since i am comparing thr reception to the sandisk wifi card that i had for my magician), quad band, better camera, WM5, bluetooth FINALLY works as it should have all along which is GREAT !!!, very stable, practical and nice, good speakerphone, great sound!
Cons: I'm not sure if it's really that slower than the BA or Magician... however I'm disappointed by the CPU speed rating. Due to the mechanical design - all of the carrying cases in the market so far are a compromise - not great to say the least. Bad stylus concept, design and implementation.
So which one is the best so far?
The wizard. without a doubt.
Go for it.
Ive had my XDA2 for a few years now and finally the size is starting to get on my nerves. Im considering replacing it with a JAMin or equivalent but im worried that the CPU wont be able to keep up with Tomtom5 and Media player running at the same time when im driving. And of course if its worth the cost just to get something thats smaller? Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks
Andy
To sort out any performance issues go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=53084
What starts out as an idea in the thread soon becomes reality as the challenge was taken up. If you use the patch in this thread then you should be fine.
I don't have TT5 myself but a couple of guys in my office do and they are happy bunnies even without overclocking.

It will RUN, but the music experience would be appaling as you will hear gaps and skips, escpecially when driving with Bt GPS ON. I'd suggest u buy O2 XDA Atom aka hp rw6800 in your case. It lacks the quality one-hand contol of Prophet due to 2-buttons-less design, but at least it SHOULD(check this first and dont blame me anyway) provide enough performance for the tasks you seek to run as well as it could be overclocked too. Good luck!

Which patch?
imo.
Please dont think of buying Prophet, you will get disappoint at its low CPU speed.
I just sold my Dopod 818pro and use my dad's old blueAngle. I found out, blueangle has much faster start windows time( maybe wm5 takes more CPU to start with)
But when I run the Tomtom 5, I found out blueangle is much faster then Prophet ( at least 4 times faster ).
If I were you, I will wait for new TytYN(Hermes), but I dont think Tytyn will be much faster than blueangle or anyother device using around 400 mhz CPU.
I will not buying pocketpc in this year unless HTC boosts the CPU clock and the camera(> 320 mp), at the same time, you can see the GSM phones have much nicer looking and camera.
There r many other chooices, why ppc at this moment?
The HTC Prophet is not a high performance machine, but it runs major tasks well, and TomTom and Media Player concurrently are no problem on my non-overclocked Dopod version. From the German forums we have learnt that there seem to be major performance differences between the different brands that offer the Prophet, and it seems this is mainly due to the use and configuration of ext. ROM programs and settings. So I assume that the ODMs like JAM, Qtek etc. are to blame for the differences between technically identical machines. How else could one explain that TomTom starts within 15 secs after reboot on my machine, but in 60 secs on others. And BTW, Vodafone now sells the Prophet too, from Dopod who is a HTC subsidiary now.

Patch is probably not the right word.
The guy in the thread wrote a small app to monitor OMAP CPU load and call OMAPCLOCK to adjust the speed depending on what the load is.
If you are running a heavy app, the CPU cranks up, if not, it falls back to prolong the battery.
Edit: I've tried it and it works but as it's still beta - use at own risk.
How much faster is this new processor compared to the Wizards? Is noticably much faster, or not much?
Is it worth the upgrade?
yes it is, video streaming, usege of phone, bootup all faster but i must say t-mob rom has som glitches. not obvious but still there
The speed increase wasn't as fantastic as I had hoped, but it makes the device definitely more usable.
I'd say if you are a heavy user of the device and have the "Spare" cash, GET ONE, If not, wait for the next Vario III or whatever its gonna be called.

If you want to use Skype and 3G, then yes. Other not really. Don't get me wrong it is the best device for me, but unless you can get a good deal then as has been said already the speed difference isn't onticeable from the latest Wizard ROMs.
TyTN vs Wizaed? No Contest!!
C'mon guys you gotta be kidding!!??!!
The TyTN/VarioII/SPV 3100...and its other guises, is far superior to the Wizard, even with the latest ROM!
Compare:
Does the Wizard have a commendable 2MP camera worthy of taking on SE K750i?
Does the Wizard have A2DP & AKU2 out the box?
Does it Multitask like the TyTN without lag?
Is it as varied in operability i.e. one-handed navigation plus many buttons?
Does it have HSDPA compatibility?
Is the screen as bright and clear?
Does it even have 3G?
Can it Video call?
NO!
The Wizard is good an everything but the TyTN is Great in comparison. Just my 2 cents worth.
Aye but unless you're wanting to use 3G, want to run lots of apps or use the camera then it's not noticeable better than the Wizard. I still have to see the difference in speed between the latest Wizard ROMs and the TyTYN.
As I said it is better, but not worth taking out a new contract to run against your existing one like a lot of people are doing.
Allow me to step in with a related question: The 3rd party compatible battery charts from Hongkong manufacturers show the HTC batteries from the Wizard and Hermes to be compatible. Can you confirm this?
@Lucas0511
The batteries are completely different.
The Wizard one is much smaller than that of the Hermes.
See attached picture
Cheers,
Drifter
The Wizard was Okay, but not close to the Tytn. I found the Wizard keyboard (Qtek 9100) somewhat unusable, the annoyance of constantly hitting the camera button a nuisance, and the constant speed degredations because it was doing some housekeeping unacceptable, all of these issues are gone with the Tytn. The ability to use Skype on the phone, important to communicate overseas, and other features made this an easy choice. Plus, don't ask me how I did it, but broke the spring holding in the memory card on the Wizard, which made it ready for retirement.
The Vario is a Good Phone, The vario II is definitely a better phone, but the newer version is still very expensive SIM free at the moment and So in my opinion the bottom line is if you use it to its full potentional AND if you have the spare cash.
The Vario II isn't as brilliant as I would have hoped, the 400Mhz processor is FASTER, but you still see abit of lag which I wasn't expecting.
UMTS and HSPDA make the device MUCH faster for downloading, but its still quite slow with internet browsing.
The camera is better but not even in its wildest dreams can it take on the SE K750.
Video calling - How often do people use this ?
You also need to keep in mind that will the pace that phones are being developed and released that the Vario III is possibly going to be released within the next 12 months or less.
So, the bottom line I would say is ..... do you need it and have you got the money.
Hi all,
I've been running the Wizard for almost 9 months now - clocked at 264 MHz thanks to omapclock - without any problem.
I got a TyTN from my job at the end of July and could not see any noticeable difference in terms of latency or execution speed.
The battery lasts only 24 hours when I am under UMTS coverage (48h at least with the Wizard with Edge).
I seriously think I'll get back to the Wizard until a decent french ROM version is available :?

HTC TyTN French (HERM200)

Radio: 1.03.03.10 - Proto: 32.34.7010.01H
I think i will stick with my Wizard for now. From what i have read on these forums and elsewhere, the differences, while nice, are not compelling enough for warrent the spend.
Thanks for you input.
I use Slingplayer. Will the tytn make a difference? I also live in Dallas where umts is active.
What would the major differances be between the TyTN ie Qtek 9600 model phone in the performance area as opposed to the Wizard model phones ie.. cingular 8125/T-Mobile MDA phones? Does the processor speed of the two model greatly affect the running of the phone or is it reduced due to the fact that they really arn't apples to apples on the processor as one is a samsung processor and the other the omap.
Also am considering the HP hw6945 model as well. If any one has any insight on that.
Thanks for any insight.
pschmidt
well, I own both of them (moving from the wizard to the tytn). The tytn seems snappier in general, but I don't run any CPU-intensive program so it's hard to say exactly how much faster it is. Maybe some of the other forum members have a more informed opinion.
Moved to TyTN from k-jam (wizard) and I'm convinced it's much snappier and generally more stable -- I rely on my phone connection for internet access and email and have found the TyTN up and downloads msg. faster than my k-jam and I can surf the web comfortably with it at EDGE speeds (Cingular USA hasn't delivered 3G in my area yet). As far as I'm concerned this has been a really good move and I might end up keeping my TyTN for a longtime (as a gadget geek I generally get caught up in the next technology moves so I buy and sell pdas pretty often).
From a display response perspective, my TyTN feels about as fast as my 8125 which I overclocked to 240mhz. Internet browsing on Cingular's Edge network is much faster though. Here's a quote from eeter which may explain this:
EDGE on the TyTN is supposed to be faster than the 8125. It has a new feature called Extended TBF Release which improves the overall throuput

Thanks Sleuth - that's interesting and explains a lot. I also use a Slingbox and have found my TyTN works pretty good even though I don't yet have 3G speed on the local Cingular net. Push email is also faster.
FYI - Anyone considering upgrading to Hermes
I have been using a universal for the last 18months and have now sold it and upgraded to the HTC Hermes.
The universal served me very well and the only thing I miss is the larger screen and VGA resolution and standard 3.5mm jack - however - I don't miss the bulk.
The hermes is everything the universal is minus the VGA.
My default Rom on the universal was Helmi's v1.3 which was AKU 3.5 and was a very very stable/solid rom.
I later installed PDAVIET 2.04 pro (Crossbow/WM6) which was a little temperamental but solid never the less.
I have installed XDA Live 0.20 which is a Crossbow rom on the hermes and it is very fast, I mean very very fast in comparison to the the universal.
In actual fact the hermes feels like an overclocked blue angel. (Normal operation, responsiveness, games etc)
Before I had the universal I had a blue angel that I used to regularly overclock to 530mhz (XCPUSCHALAR) and I can tell you that the herms feels very close to this.
I actually wonder what the hermes is capable of if overclocked slightly - As I don't have any figures (Pocket Hackmaster performance Index, SPB benchmark, etc) I can only speculate - but I'm looking forward to investigating this further.
Incidently the hermes has the Imageon gpu that was present in the blue angel so it runs films in TCPMP with hardware acceleration something the universal lacks.
Now I'm not sure whether the Universal had slow ram, or it being a VGA device slowed it down or what but I do know that the hermes is orders of magnitude more responsive in every day operation than the universal was...
Wireless connects at 54mbs on the hermes instead of the 11mbs maximum thoroughput the universal supports even with the 802.11g hack.
And the Hermes also supports HSDPA (1.8mbs theoretical - if your network provider supports it). Admittedly this was a deal breaker for me as umts is cool but connecting at 1.8mbs to the internet whilst on the road is edging very close to nirvana LOL!
Now while I will miss browsing servers at 640x480 using ts client in WM6 (WM5 tsc was atrocious BTW - LOL!) I feel the hermes features and performance more than make up for it. Plus I recently purchased a Sony u50 (1st generation umpc circa 2004) which has a 800x600 5 inch screen and the u50 allows me to TS into server using the hermes as a modem (Bluetooth or serial comms)
Last but not least I need to mention the hermes 2MP camera - OMDs - LOL.
It is head and shoulders above any HTC Camera I've ever experienced and I have seen them all...
SPV to wallaby to alpine to blueangel to universal I've had them all and this camera is the 1st USEABLE camera in terms of how responsive the camera app is, the picture quality and the overall experience!
Granted it's no replacement for my Canon SLR BUT (BIG BUT) it's definitely useable and supports typical camera functions such as self timer, darkness controls etc.
All other HTC devices had a fairly decent camera app but a piss poor camera sensor that only operated remotely correctly with good light. The pics I get with the hermes are of comparable quality to recent nokia and sony phones.
Hope this information is of use to anyone considering moving from the Universal to a hermes.
haha funny enough I was looking at the hermes last night.
My contract has run out, im in the UK and o2 are no longer doing free gprs so I need to jump ship as its damn expensive! Three are offering unlimited (1gig) a month for £5 so that's my main option plus they have a HSDPA network. But the downside is they don't offer the hermes so i'd have to get it seperatly I want a hermes
Thanks for the review, I want a hermes more now
Thanks
Stu
actually, just a thought... with WM6 PIE has the option to view in VGA mode, this makes website VERY easy to view as if they were on a desktop pretty much which makes browsing actually possible on these devices. Is that function still available on the hermes ?
thanks
Stu
IE VGA
Hi Stu,
No that feature is not available in WM6 IE for the hermes as it is a qvga device (320x240)
Just checked the menu options in IE and noticed that option was missing whereas it was there in WM6 IE on the universal.
Cheers

O2 are just about to bring out a new XDA which is similar looking to the Hermes but appears to have a faster processor. It is apparently out on 26 March.
ooo in that case I may hang around to see what it's like.
But saying that the data is a huge issue data costs on o2 are huge plus i'm a student so we can whine more lol

Or you might like to hold out for the I-mate Ultimate 7150 - more ROM, more RAM, faster processor, VGA .....
not made my mind up about the design of the new ultimate series, dont know what it is, they look at a little funny :? will have to see it in flesh.
This is what I hate about these things, its always add a little bit of extra time on and wait for the next device
The very mention of microSD in these devices is enough for me to overlook them and appreciate my Universal even more - despite the superior performance of the new devices over the Universal. Since the Universal is VGA, has a stable performance, and uses SD Cards - I am pleased with it.
Only when SDHC readers start becoming more mainstream in PDA Phones will I start considering a successor to the Universal.
