OZ messenger on 8125 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

it is suppose to work? i installed it on my cingular phone, but when i went to sign on. i get a message saying please send ten digit phone # and some random gibberish in a text file.
whats happening here?

isn't OZ that Java messaging program?
If so, I don't believe it'll work on the 8125.
There are better programs that are native to the Windows Mobile platform anyway

As far as I know, OZ only comes on tmobile phones. If it's anything like everything else that comes with tmobile phones, they've done something to lock it to tmobile and will probably prove worthless on cingular. And really, it's pretty worthless on tmobile, too. It constantly sets notification flags, causing the light to blink and the "Notification" softkey to display and there's no turning it off. It uses SMS for messaging, it doesn't close (it hides) and you can't kill it easily, if at all. I've never been able to kill it once I started it, anyway. I use the MSN app that comes with the phone and that crappy old AIM client. Neither is anything to write home about but they get the job done and they're a magnitude better than OZ. Agile is nice but I don't entirely trust it yet and it's still kinda buggy in places.

The Best Instant Messenger (IM)

Thought I would start this thread to identify the best IM for WM5.0 or Wizard. We are looking for a universal IM that connects to MSN, ICQ, AOL and Yahoo.
I have Agile Messenger but it seems to disconnect all the time while in a call or just randomly. Not to reliable. My wife has the sidekick and the IM is flawless.
What do you use and recommend?
Agile Messenger
Pro:
Nice interface that allows you to see all contacts from different services
You can pull ICQ info so you can see who are ebhind those numbers
Separate tabs for each IM window
Alerts when an IM appears
Con:
Connection drops when on call
Connection drops randomly (should be a buffer for lost connections before it disconnects)
The application will randomly close
I use Agile
About the cons:
Connection drops when on call (It uses GPRS/EDGE, which is the same part of the phone that makes/takes calls. The only other way is to use text messages, and that is costly)
Connection drops randomly (should be a buffer for lost connections before it disconnects) (I've never had that happen to me)
The application will randomly close (I've never had that happen to me)
Does anybody use the AIM that comes setup on the MDA? If not, why not? I don't use anything other than AIM, and the one that came with the phone seems to work fine (although I've only had it for a day now).
From what I've heard, the OZ messenger app which comes installed on tmobile mda uses sms to chat. this means you pay for each sms message unless you have unlimitted sms plan. also, i've found it to be painfully slow.
I think agile is great, especially the WM5 alpha build. agile must disconnect during a call because GPRS/EDGE and voice cannot be used at the same time. I also had random disonnects before I updated to the qtek AKU2 rom. Now that i have updated, agile works flawlessly.
the oz communicator does not use sms. i dont know why people start these nasty rumors. the problem i have with oz is that it constantly occupies the notification slot telling you that you ar available. the led will always blink orange when it is on. and i actually caught it disconnected with the available icon still in the notification tray.
if they fixed the notification to only when you get a new message then i would probably use it.
my agile closes its self too.

OZ absolutely does use SMS. I have performed tests on this where the ONLY use that could have been made of the SMS was the OZ client, and the counter got hit for EVERY message.
That's not a "nasty rumor" - its a FACT.
I totally agree that OZ uses SMS. I don't have unlimited SMS, so I never use it. After testing OZ, I suddenly had 45 text messages on my bill. Coincidence? NO! Like I said, I never use SMS, so it certainly was OZ that was using SMS to transmit those IMs back and forth.

I agree, we don't use unlimited SMS either, OZ is definitely SMS-based.
The SMS charges even say "IM" or "AIM" (can't remember which now)

I have been using the T-Mobile USA messenger software. It works, but the incoming messages are very slow. Outgoing ones are fast but the incoming take about 5 mins or so. Where can I download the OZ software?
I went to dl agile and the site says WM5 version coming soon. what version are you guys using?
the WM5 version of agile is due in the next 1-2 weeks...
there's a link to an alpha version of the WM5 agile in another xda-dev thread...

T-Mobile MDA w/ OZ IM client... notification won't go away?

Hi,
I have recently switched back from using AgileMessenger to using OZ IM, which is the "Instant Messaging" program bundled with T-Mobile MDAs. I did this because I hate how I miss messages when I'm in an area with poor service using AgileMessenger. OZ IM uses SMS messages, so it doesn't have that problem, but it does have one ASTOUNDINGLY annoying feature - it constantly shows a notification entitled "AOL Instant Messenger" that seems to just serve to tell me that its available and let me switch to it. I think this is a convenience for people who aren't using a replacement task switcher like Magic Button, and in that context I can see it being good, but personally I find it quite annoying. Is there any way that anyone is aware of that I can disable that notification? I'd prefer to use Magic Button to switch to OZ IM and use the notification feature for what it was intended for.
I've been having the same problem on my new MDA and just searched to find this single thread about it. Anyone have a solution?
ANNOYING AS HELL!!!!!!!!!!!
i also agree
on another note i checked the oz.com site and it shows that they have a version that does msn messenger too, i would like to get one that does them all wonder how i can get that version??? also would like to get it with google talk...
hey i just found this on HowardForums, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but am going to right now will post results in a few

As for Agile Notification options, there is some bug that appears to constantly be neglected, at least for our wizards. To remove the annoying balloon notification run the client once, look inside of \program files\agilemessenger... and using a text editor (total commander for example) open preferences.xml look for the dual entry of <text_balloons>, remove the first entry and notice the second entry is the option you have chosen inside the client... OFF! "
dumbass me, this was for agilemessenger
sorry jumped the gun..
Does anyone know if T-Mobile OZ works with any other provider? I am with Fido and cannot get it to go.

Oz Cab

Does anyone have the oz cab that is compatible with WM6? I deleted mine off, but have decided that IM+ and mundu take up too much resources for the little I use them. I have unlimited text messaging with my family plan, so I would like to go ahead and reload oz, but don't want to have to do a hard reset in order to do so.
Any help would be much appreciated. I searched, but couldn't find it.
Thanks.
Attached!
Thank you. Unfortunately, now I can't get the darn thing to work. It keeps saying communication error and to check my settings.

I had the same problem, what you need to do is uninstall it, and install it to your device. If you had it installed to your storage it will continue to give the error. If you install to device it will work just fine. Hope that helps!
If you want it to work you're goin to have to hard reset and let the T-Mo customizations run. Remember Oz IM runs off you're SMS and not a dedicated internet app, so there will be some settings that would have to be tweaked in order to sync it. I don't know if anyone has made it work or even tried to yet, but there are other options out there. There's IM+ and Agile but you'll have to purchase them after trial period, and there's also imov and palringo which are both free, but have their share of problems. All run on internet so it's much better than sms based.
I personally use a combo of palringo and imov. Palringo is better looking and more feature rich than imov but disconnects frequently even when there's service. Also, as of right now, there's a problem with switching between different chats. It doesn't save your conversion once you exit out and there's no workaround at the moment. Imov basically has no features, is very basic in looks, and has ads that take up about one-third of your screen, but it is much more stable. You can leave it running overnight.
Hope this helps
You don't have to do a hard reset and let the Tmo extras run, I am running my wing debranded with the cab re-installed to my device, and it works for me with no problems. Although you can use the other programs papito mentions if you have a data plan. If you just have a text msg plan use the oz cab.
how do i choose to install on the device? it doesnt give me an option. i use 8525 btw
or are you guys talking about miucro sd card cuz i dont have one

Whats Is OZ Pocket PC? Just got my wing and I'm looking to trick it out.
Thanks
Okay, I think I have this OZ communicator figured out somewhat. It seems that there is a registry key that makes a connection to a site that (I would assume) handles the IM/SMS exchange for the OZ IM Client (HKCU\Software\OZ Communications\Configuration\1\Network) which points at http://aol.cwmim.com:1171 I would think that it is the conversion here that creates the text message charge. I would think that t-mobile would have a similar site to put in here that handles conversion for their network. Anyone have a t-mobile phone with OZ, and can pass that out to us?

I have a t-mobile wing with a custom rom on it. I wanted to install Oz because i wanted to have the instant messengers. I do have unlimited text and the basic data plan. When I installed the program, it gave me a communication error and to check the settings but it also sent me a text message...which I didnt understand. How can I get the program to work? I have it installed on the device memory already.

AIM for the 8525

i currently have the UK version of aim on my fone and its a hassle to have to login by sending a message and even more annoyin to press the send button instead of enter. ive tried other free versions of Aim such as IM+ and didnt like them except Agilemessenger which was good but last only a week. I saw a link to this site that mods the uk version to work by pressing enter but idk how to install it? it just downloads the file and i dont know wat to do with it? can ne1 help me or give me sum other options for free aim messengers that work on the 8525?
here is the link to the file i downloaded.

thx in advance
I've attached is a modified version of the AIM I use that I snagged off a Treo site back when i had my 700w. Basically, it takes the File Menu that's usually on the bottom, and flips it to the top. It works AWESOME
To press enter to send a message, go into the Preferences and uncheck where it says 'Enter key sends return' or something along those lines.
Other people had problems with AIM staying open.. while using this version of aim and X-Button from HTC (task manager) and my connection 'Always On' in HTCustom AIM runs forever, unless you lose service, in which you have to re-sign on. The sounds and everything work great while it's running in the background, even with the phone off it works. I haven't noticed a big change in battery life either.
Only if there were some type of today plugin for this..
If you need any help feel free to message me..
EDIT: included a screenshot so you can check it out.

You can give this one a try. It came with my ATT Tilt. It has all three messengers in one. AIM, Yahoo, and MSN. Hope it helps

GChat on desktop with phone nearby

Has anyone cracked the code on when Google chat on the phone ignores desktop chat and when it doesn't? I have seen that sometimes when I chat with my friends on my desktop, sometimes my phone beeps for every line entered by the other party and sometimes it doesn't. I think in a perfect world, the phone should beep for the "first" line of text, and if I answer on the desktop, it should ignore the rest (but still record them for posterity). And if I answer on the phone, perhaps it should just haptic vibrate for each line of text received after the "first". I say "first" in quotes because I imagine that would be difficult to manage pragmatically. When is it the first chat of a new "session", and when is it just a delay in between chat lines of the same session? Maybe a customizable interval, like say five minutes. If no text is received within five minutes then it is a new session, so beep on the first line?
Lat night I was chatting with a friend (I was on the desktop) and every time he sent something, my phone would beep. Not the best solution in my opinion.
From what I can tell, your phone will receive the message when you do not have the gchat window active on your desktop.
If you click in on the area like you were going to type a message and leave your cursor there, when your friends send messages they don't seem to get sent to the phone. On the other hand, even if you have gchat open on your desktop and you say use a different program or are on a different tab in your browser, then your phone will receive the messages.
At least this is my experience. I think this is the correct behavior as you don't need to get messages in two places when you are actively chatting.
From my experience I use Gchat on my pc everyday when i am at work and I have my phone on my desk near by. When a friend of mine messages me it hits both for the first message, but if i answer on my desktop, it does not hit my phone ever until I sign off of gchat on my pc. Even if it is not focused on the gchat window. I am however using Trillian for my gchat, not sure what you all are using.

This is what happens for me as well. Messages go to my phone on the first IM or if I don't have that window active on my desktop.
I am using the built-into-gmail-dot-com google chat. This has definitely happened to me several times before. Last night it happened again. The entire conversation I had with my friend, every time I received a message on my desktop, my phone also beeped. Other times it worked like it was supposed to (beeped the first time and that was it.)
I will see if I can get my wife to help me troubleshoot tonight.
perhaps a topic for a different thread...
I found the chat behavior to be exactly the way DLarva stated:

My question (perhaps a dumb one ) is how/where to turn off the notification that you got a chat all together?
I don't want any notification of a chat receipt while I am on the phone.
Any help?
Maybe:
Try (within setting of google talk) turn off notification bar, no vibrate, and set ringtone to silent.
That might approximate no notification.

thanks for that - have tried to "approximate" no notification, and that's all well and good. . . but not the same as turning it off.
I have looked around in my mobile settings in the google account but can't find it (thought it might be similar to turning on/off notification of appointments in the calendar)...
might just be missing it, but this seems like fairly simple feature. I am nearing feeling ready to root my phone and thought maybe this would be a feature that was only available after doing that. It would have been the final encouragement I need to take that (admittedly not very big) plunge!
I have a rooted Nexus One (CM6 with KOR) and that is as close as I can get to turning them off (that I can find anyway).
This was happening to me, too (when I used Gtalk on the PC, the phone sitting on my desk would sound the alert, with every chat message I rec'd) -- so I just manually signed out of Gtalk on the phone, and it stopped happening. I mostly use Gtalk on desktop anyway. (Though when I check "running processes" on the Vibrant, I see Gtalk always seems to be running -- must start up automatically -- even though I'm signed out...)
exactly Pevvy -
but signing out of Gmail kinda defeats the purpose of having the phone constantly synched. Guess the same argument could be made as to why you want chats saved/synched... anyhoo - I just don't want chat on my vibrant, period. I don't want them saved (so transcription is turned off in gChat on the desktop) and I would never chat from the phone. OK, never say never, but I would rather have to enable that, rather than always having it running using resources.
When I root that would a fun thing to explore to see if it can be deactivated through some custom start-up (so it doesn't show as a running service - I see the same thing) and only starts if I manually start it.
That said, if it is server side associated with the google account (its a hosted domain and that may further change things...) it may not be able to adjust even with root. Interest how this shows the blending/blurring between the net and the synch to the phone - and should data and synch be more push or pull.
Oh, I didn't sign out of Gmail on my phone -- just Gtalk (the chat service)... seems it was keeping me signed in automatically before, and I had to go into the app, and manually sign out.
