also, does someone have mapquest version for MDA? cant download from tzones site because i have hacked rom and did not install the tzone garbage.
thanks, mike

...i've got no problems using Gmaps. I use Intend Java Midlet Manager runtime JTWI 1.0: version 10.1.7.666 build 20051117...

virtual earth mobile
I use Virtual Earth Mobile, just download the program, install and run it and it works. no java midlet app needed just the program. it gets directions, shows road maps, satellite pics and both together.

Yup,
Check the Macromedia site for the Flash plugin. Is also available on this site. Good luck.
what about a java plugin for the PIE so i can use hushmail.?
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Java/JeodeForPocketPC.exe
It's a Java JVM for Pocket Internet Explorer.
sweet ill let people know if it works with hushmail
plugin fails to load.. i have no clue whats wrong with it.
Just installed it on my Qtek 9000... works fine with Buzztime (www.buzztime.com) in Internet Explorer Mobile.
RE
Hi BeyondtheTech,
I can access buzztime too
Whats there in buzztime that separates the difference between having java and no java installed?
Any other java-enabled sites that can be tested out which cannot be tested by no java installed?
Thanks
The Buzztime games are Java-enabled internet-multiplayer games. I don't know about other Java sites, though.
RE
Hi BeyondtheTech,
Few questions on Jeode for PPC
1) Does it supports WM5?
2) After installing, can internet banking sites be accessed from the PPC? I was informed that because Jeode for PPC does not have security features, hence, banking sites cannot be accessed ie. login in
3) If no, is there any way that internat banking sites can be accessed from the PPC?
Thanks
i can get in desertschools.org and bofa.com
i can access HSBC Banking from my PPC anyway - althought i dont think thats JAVA.
I do have problems playing games that are made with Visual Basic though - gonna look for a plugin/install now
p.s Using a O2 Exec WM5

Recommended Java Midlets?

Can anyone recommend any java midlets? I have had no use for the Midlet Manager thus far, but today I installed Mobile GMaps which is great (although I can't seem to get satellite images from Google).
Can anyone recommend any other midlets as it seems a waste of space if I'm only using it for one application...
Cheers,
Stegz
Opera mini is good java browser = fastest one i know.
Loads of free java midlets out there google it.
enjoy

Has anyone tried out Google Maps Mobile on Universal?

Google released a j2me version of its map service which is available at http://www.google.com/gmm
In order to download the j2me application you must use a mobile device to visit the above link. Choose the high-end version.
I tried this on my Universal and it works fine! (You should use the application as if you were using a smartphone)
Although it does not support GPS at the moment, I am more than satisfied with this initial release of google maps service with a fullscreen VGA display. It's also free from money and storage card space.
There is currently a small issue that the menu sometimes doesn't show up after I tap "zoom -". I'm not sure if this is the case for all universals or not.
It is thereby worth trying this and expecting a Pocket PC version of google maps, which should definitely support screen tapping and dragging.
Having trouble with the Midlet mgr
I have tried and tried to get the google maps to my Universal; No luck what so ever; Its trying to do something but the Midlet Mgr comes up and does nothing ! Is there any reason in particular this happens ??
There was a thread for google maps somewhere in the forums, to make it work you need a IBM java midlet manager which work with google maps java app. It does not worked in my Blueangel. Soon i will get Universal and post the results
I just tried to day (18 may) on my brand new tmob mda pro, and it works... kinda. It's painfully slow and unresponsive. After the initial excitement of seeing the familiar google map world map, my enthusiasm quickly died down when the midlet starting prompting for network use authorization one after th e other. After zooming in around a few times, it completely froze.
Actually...
... I'd like to update my post above. The network I was on was using some firewall/censorship tools. When I tried it again today on my wifi connection, it worked flawlessly, apart from the annoying repetitive message asking for the right to connect. Impressive stuff to show your friends, especially thanks to the VGA screen.
Its not supporting the touch screen right?
I must say I have some issue with it, being pretty sluggish and crashing a lot, plus I cant type adresses. Pretty awful all in all. Do I need another Java VM?
Anyway, it would be cool if it worked, because Pocket streets actually sucks a lot regarding the map layout. Anyone got mor tips for such apps?

The java applet does rely highly on the quality of connection though, otherwise it is easy to get stuck on the screen. Likewise, some functions do not seem to work properly since it isn't a stable version. Based on Java, it is also reasonbly slow.
This should originally be designed for a phone and I guess there would probably be a PPC version which supports most of the WM + touchscreen features.
It can't be said as a fantastic tomtom replacement yet but I can foresee that in some near future.
well, If only opera allowed the user-agent string to be modified, we could actually just browse maps.google.com and be done with it. But noooooooo.... for some reason the user-agent string can't be changed. Arrrrg.

actually I can visit maps.google.com normally with PIE and get a simplified version of map service which provides the map as plain graphic files (like jpg or gif). The graphic map cannot of course be dragged or tapped, and is in broken colours.
It won't be a good way of google to improve maps.google.com since this calls for too many modifications in PIE and hence can't be eligible. Comparing with the slow pace of MS I would rather believe google will be a bit faster to produce a reader to their own maps.
Well, Google Maps Mobile works on my T-Mobile MDA Pro, but just barely...
For every single keystroke, it asks me:
"Google Maps" wishes to access the network, which might use call time. This MIDlet suite is not from a trusted source.
Allow this time?
[ No ] [ Yes ]
Click to collapse
I can't find a way to permanently allow it to access the network. In the midlet's security settings, I can only choose between "No" or "Oneshot", for network access.
Anyone know how to permanently allow this? Or how to make a MIDlet "trusted"?
I'm running on the built-in MIDlet manager (intent Java MIDlet Manager, Runtime JTWI 1.0: v10.1.7.666 (Build 20051117)).
Thanks,
- Michael
Google Maps was working fine on my HTC Wizard before I upgraded to a newer ROM, now it's also saying the same thing:
"Google Maps" wishes to access the network, whic might use call time. This MIDlet suite is not from a trusted source. Allow this time?
I remember when I tried it previously it only asked this once, not it's asking so often it's impossible to use google maps properly.
If anyone has an idea please post!

Are you talking about Virtual Earth Mobile cos this is brilliant. I used to use a version that required a java plug in but I reckon this is better excellent in fact.

This gives a cab file so dead easy to install.

Java version

Sorry if I was a little dismissive re Java version, and as I'm feeling guilty, here's a link that will help if you really want to pursue the Java, Jar, Jad, Midlet thingy route.
Note "Google Local Mobile got renamed to Google Mobile Maps (gmm) and the main Java class is now called GoogleNav."

Also some more info on Java on PDAs here:

I use the IBM J9 java emulator. Works well.
BTW You might like to have a look at MG Maps:
http://www.mgmaps.com/
It can access Google Maps, Google Satellite, MSN Road Map, MSN Aerial, MSN Aerial with labels, Yahoo Maps, Yahoo Satellite, Ask.com Maps and Ask.com Aerial. It's GPS aware (although this doesn't seem to work with my BT GPS) and can access KML overlays (although I haven't tried this out yet.)
Very nice.

People still use java??? I haven't used java on my phone since I last had a SonyEricsson! I haven't bothered with Java on WM phones.
java and flash are the future of mobiles, they just haven't realized it yet (aside from Japan ) and ajax...
I think the original poster was referring to javascript, not real java code. A lot of Banks and online sites us javascript and it used to be a big problem with ce and wm2002 and wm 2003. WM5 seems to handle some of the basic javascript and then there are several apps for addon such as IBM's j9 or websphere or what ever the name is this year. Also, midlet's are becoming more available

You mean JavaScript? Very few pages use client-side Java and I don't think this will change.

Nope, Google Earth is Midlet-based; see my Midlet & Google Earth -related articles.
Is there any way you can get a pluggin that makes java midlets (J2ME) Work any better? The ammount of midlets that install and then just do nothing is appaling? Sony Ericcsons and Nokia's have multiplayer Bluetooth Midlets that work on either device, why not on ours?? Also one in particular is REPORO (Awesome Program) They have a midlet specifically made for the Wizzard wchic works fine on the Tytn but I have found it is massively cut down! On a Nokia or Sony Ericsson or Motorola (I work in a phone shop so have everything readily available) They can all access the phones contact book and Pictures and Camera so you can send free picture messages to other REPORO users! Now Ive installed all the other brands versions onto my VARIO and they all install fine but then they dont run and crash my phone! Can I get an emulator or a pluggin to fix this?
www.REPORO.com
(Awesome if only for the live football results)
Chat rooms
Free Texts
Free Picture Messages
MSN, YAHOO, AIM, Google Messenger!
Shopping
News
Horrorscopes
And the list keeps getting bigger! Awesome software!! (MAke sure you select the O2 XDA MINI S as your device as its the only Wizzard derivative on there.
Install the J9 VM like others have mentioned.
Oh, and remember: "Write Once, Run Anywhere"...HA!!

Touch HD Google Maps

Does anyone know if the HD Google Maps ships as the version with street view? I've just seen that it's available for WM with Street View (just as per the G1 and iPhone) or do we need to upgrade it manually with the latest cab?
--Edit--
Sorry, didn't see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=457479
The built-in Google Maps is without streetview. At this time there is no WiMo version which includes streetview, so upgrading will not help either. I tried that a week ago, it will install a version but thats without streetview (not even sure if it was never as the rom-built-in).
I dont know about G1, but the iPhone has a specialised version of GMaps.

Google Maps update, as of today I believe, includes street view for WiMo. It is version 2.3.0.9.
Navigate to m.google.com/maps using mobile IE and just install the new version. It will ask to delete the old version on installation.
