Goodbye Windows Live Search, I hardly knew ya.

I love windows Live search, I can't believe somethings better, guess I'll have to download google and give it a spin
cab downloads, but install is unsuccessful no matter if its from the storage card or device
It seems to install and work ok for me from my storage card. FWIW I'm running ROM 1.35.255.2.

I liked Windows Live Search a lot, but mainly because it just plain worked. The java midlet version of GMM was instable if it would even work at all. Google just works better. It also allows you to look up contacts and use them in your searches. Windows Live Search doesn't have that option. I'm sure future versions of Windows Live Search will up the ante and Google will, in turn, raise the bar even higher. Yay for competition.
FYI, I'm also running the SA 1.35 ROM and it installed without any issues. I just went to www.google.com/gmm and opened/ran the installer from there.

Same rom, but no success, "cab installation unsuccessfull" message, even tryng to close ALL active processes
archive corrupted!
Install and all worked fine for me this morning. Maybe save it somewhere first... then try the install? (That's the method that worked for me.)
worked for me too
what about google talk for mobile ???
download the cab on ur PC, active sync and move it to your phone. Their OTA download is messed up.
I tried it a couple times and noticed the file sizes were different. the cab file should be approx 607k. I kept getting 300k when I was getting it over the air directly to my phone.
I went to www.google.com/gmm on my pc, got the wm5 version cab, put it on my phone and installed from my phone just fine.
It doesn't have hybrid map view (streets on the aerial pictures) which Live search has. Actually, live search feels a bit better to me still.
works fine copying the cab over for me on the Vario II, pretty neat.

sure it does, just hit Menu, Change View.
I cant get my Bluetooth GPS to work. After i hit track with GPS, it errors out and brings up some help file and talks about editing settings in the control panel if you have a BT gps, but i have no idea what its talking about.
what the heck. There's no detail at all for Japan, although google maps has the detail and so does the midlet version.
The midlet, however, can't do searches in Japanese which is why I was glad to try out this new thing.
wow, what a great app. i already used the java midlet before but that didn't work so good. this one does! even the satelite view is quite quick via umts!
the install was ok in one try. i used iexplorer on my tytn and went to the link www.google.com/gmm there i installed the cab file.

hello
has anyone got the .cab for GMM's new 2.3.1. i tried to get it by going to m.google.com/maps but i get an unassociated file type error "gmm" during install. also when i try to DL from my PC by windows mobile (download binary) link and i get an old version 2.2.0.19.
here is the proof it exists.
http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps/streetview.html
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/...bile-gets-street-view-and-walking-directions/
it looks quite good!
Its not available as a cab file yet, only the java enabled (jar) version is out.
Looking very much forward to this one... finally walking mode
If anyone has the jar file can you post it as I cannot seem to download it....always 0k....weird
Cheers
Aidan
This I want. I've been looking around for a link to try and find the java version.... our Diamonds do support java after all...
http://google.com/gmm/apps/v2.3.1/L1/gmaps-231-m2_L1.jar
Got it working and installed. The java version isn't up to much though...no gps or touch screen support.
The full screen view of street view is not supported, and the app crashes out a fair bit too
well google's android OS will have street view incorporated into its maps system, there is a slim possibility that someone can extract that when it comes out next week.
I'm sure google will post the winmo cab soon(er or later).

has anyone seen a relese date on this or is it one big **** tease?
I just had my HTC Touch HD T8282 with MW version 1.14.403.3(22273) WWE. I have several questions and hope to find answers here.
1. Google maps were not already installed, I installed it by myself from mobile.google.com. The program works fine but it does not find any satellite. Is it normal ? I am living in Turkey.
2. Should I upgrade my OS to 1.19... by using the OliNex ? I mean are there any big differences between those two versions ? I don't see any lag on my device currently. Are there so many new properties coming with the new version ? I am using my pda mainly for business.
3. This is my biggest problem. From Start>Programs>Messenger I open Windows Live Messenger. I choose sign in as Busy, Online or Away, etc. Then I click sign in and proceed to mail&password screen. But at that screen I cannot write my e-mail !! I can write my password thus I cannot click the sign in button because the mail is not written. Its the 2 of the 5 steps. What should I do? If the upgrade will fix this issue I will do it immediately. Messenger is a must for me in pda.
4. What is the best source for downloading .cab game files.
Thanks.
google maps no need any satellite you just take data from the google server, all u need is an active internet connection.
u can try IM+ messenger or ebuddy java.
for games u can try some arcade emulator for classic gb, snes or megasis. its really fun 4 me
Please someone help at least about messenger problem !!
Maybe you should try a cooked rom, with some newer sources.
By default, Google Maps doesn't use GPS, since you don't need GPS to show an address on the map, you just need an internet connection.
GPS is useful is you want to locate precisely your current position on the map. In this case, you can force Google Maps to use GPS by going to Menu > Use GPS. (Note that if GPS is not activated, Google Maps will still be able to locate you on the map. I will use your GSM cellular location and show map the area covered by this cellular and in which you are supposed to be)
Okay I understand but using googlemaps via GPRS outside is not free obviously, that's why I ask if GPS works on googlemaps so that it can be free. But it does not either find any satellite, I think this is because of I am in Turkey. What is the best free GPS program just using satellites not any kind of other conneciton. Thanks.
By the way I figured out the messenger problem !!

As long as your maps aren't cached already Google Maps will have to download it. Therefore Google Maps isn't a good solution for outdoor navigation with GPRS (3g), if you have no special data flatrate.

Maybe you should describe what you have done, so others can make profit out of it.
How I solved the messenger problem;
I opened the windows live program. From the options I selected the ''Switch Windows ID''. After that I had the ability of entering my mail adress !!
Can you also say something about:

I think its up to you, but if there is nothing you are unhappy with and you don't need some of the functionalities provided with the cooked roms you shouldn't do it at all.
Flashing the HardSPL means that you could use your warranty. Even if there is a way backwards, it could get tricky, so at any rate you will have to read through the various topics, so you know what you are doing.
There is also a USPL, which don't changes your SPL, but your device could get bricked, if you try to flash a non-working rom.
what functionalities are provided with the cooked roms ?? I really have no idea about that..
Hi
Having tried TomTom 7, Copilot and the "try before buy" Navigon; I found all to be wanting in some way. I have not tried: Garmin XT is fixed to a SD card - I don't want to swop cards; IGO 8 looks good but seems to require lots of fixes.
Is there a GPS application (not google or similar online app) that just works from the box or cab ?
I like the google app but I don't like the high data rates which could get expensive when I'm roaming.
I just want a GPS app that has its own maps on my SD card (16 gbyte card so loads of space available). Does this really exist ?
When I check the official GPS provider sites (e.g., TomTom and Copilot) then they say their product is not compatible with the HTC HD - I guess that explains all the various hoops people have to jump through to get an app working.
I suspect I have to wait until spring next year for the app companies to provide a working HD compatible version ? Or, does anyone know better ??
Thanks & holiday greetings to all, Dave.
You can't compare Google Maps with a navigation solution like TomTom, IGo or Navigon. Google Maps is just showing the area around your current position, whereas the other programs can navigate you through the country.
As far as I know TomTom works just without any work, all others need to be configurated. How to do that is mentioned in the various threads here, so it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Come again? I've been using Google Maps for over a year to navigate me around Brisbane. (No that's not the country but I'm sure it's capable of that.)
Well I can use google to navigate as it has a "show directions" option. I know it is not as sophisticated as the other GPS apps.
My problem with google is it needs a data link which gets expensive when I'm out of my home country (hence need often a GPS) because I have to make a gprs link to have google working.
TomTom does not work on the HD - Version 6 fails to work. Version 7 works fine but there seems to be no way to legally load maps except the single trial map of one city.
Thanks anyway for answering.

Does CoPilot work on the HD?
I've got Version 6 currently on my XDA Orbit & was thinking of upgrading
Garmin Mobile XT works great on my HD
Cheesy Dave / Gulioth - I have used CoPliot v7 from day 1 on my Touch HD without any problems. Transferring it from my Touch Cruise took 5 minutes over the air, deactivating and reactivating (something you cannot do with TTN6).
It looks really good on the HD screen and is very easy to navigate through the menus (no pun intended). I am currently using v7.7.0.134 and ALK are bringing an even friendlier version out for the Touch HD shortly. I have used this, TTN6, TTN7 and Telmap Navigator in the recent past and various others going back to routeplanner on a Psion series 5.
Whichever gps software you use, it will always be "short" in some way or other. As far as the HTC Touch is concerned, CoPliot is by far the easeist overall to install, register and use with a touch screen & the maps are fairly up to date. I can also import my own POIs and safety cameras from TTN.
I also gave Garmin XT a try.
One problem though, up until now, i am feeling that there is Lag or the cpu is not following up too fast to show changes, so if i am making a turn in a roundabout, you can see a strange thing happen on the screen.

Thanks davast. I actually got a copy of CoPilot which was sold to me as CoPilot7 for windows mobile. It turned out to be the specific version for the HTC Diamond.
I think I will wait for the new version and double check this time that the supplier knows what they are doing.
Regards, D.
What's latest CoPilot version? Is it v7? Does anyone know if the next one is imminent?
I own v6 for my XDA Orbit 1 and will probably upgrade rather than purchase new version as think it works out cheaper.
Upgrade = £48.93
Dealer = £59.95
I'm going to try a new one when I get a minute, beta atm but works on my hacked Hermes to wm6.1 and is nice

Hi Gulioth, I received version 7 "for the HTC Diamond" which will only load to the internal storage of the Diamond - hence, I returned it as this would not work on the HD.
I don't know the specific current version other than "7". If you have CoPilot Central then you should be able to find it. Unfortunately with the Diamond version there also is no copy of the CoPilot Central.
I have returned the Diamond version and I'm sitting waiting for someone (PLEASE !!) to make a legally correct version work.
If you check here: http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/compatibility.asp you can see that ALK says the HD is not yet compatible.
I've been using OCN8 (on course navigation) on my HD for a month. It's beautiful and has TTS for enhanced street naming in turn-by-turn directilns. The only problem, out of the box, is it only runs in portrait mode, but it does it beautifully in all the HD high res glory.
There's a thread in the Blackstone section with workarounds for running landscape.
Thanks - that's a new one to me - I will investigate "on course navigation"
Ciao, Dave

Hmmm - this seems to be only USA & Canada according to their site:
Map Coverage USA and Canada.
The latest maps and up-to-date points of interest for United States. Full road coverage with over 10 443 000 kilometers of updated roads, and over 12.3 millions points of interest. Includes maps of Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico.
http://www.oncoursenavigator.com/ocn8_intro.aspx
I did not specify in my original question that I'm based in Europe.
I'm looking for a legally correct GPS application that works "out-of-the box" or direct from the cab without having to tweak xml files or anything else and which is recognised by the software provider as compatible and acceptable. TomTom and CoPilot do not yet list the HD as a compatible device. I also don't want a software that is linked to one micro SD card (like Garmin XT).
I believe that CoPilot will be the right choice when it is HD compatible. I like also TomTom but it seems so difficult to make it work - there are many threads here about the tricks needed to make maps work. I do have TomTom running but only with the sample map. Trying to get TomTom home to accept the HD and legally download new Maps does not seem legally correct now - maybe next year ...

WOW - this seems to be a first, a GPS app that claims the HTC HD is compatible:
http://www.66.com/route66/index.php?cid=UK&act=1&prodid=5723
TomTom has been posted on the forums for years now. This is the latest version (specifically the VGA/WVGA version) that works with the Touch Pro 2. I have custom packaged it so that it will not mess up an existing Bluetooth stack, as well as removing the Today plugin (which I personally think is garbage).
If this package somehow violated the TOS of this site (I can't imagine how, a quick search produces multiple links on these forums), then I apologize. TomTom doesn't seem to make available/support the software for Windows Mobile PDAs on their Website (iPhone is there though, how odd). Their policy has always seemed to be the sale of maps, so I'm releasing these packages with that in mind.
Note: DO NOT ask me for maps. Do not ask any question about where to get them. Purchase v8 maps from TomTom. If you use software, support the developer (so they can keep their job and make better/new software) by actually PAYING for it. I know, its a novel concept.

great thanks been looking for a version that works on tp2 for ages now does this work with tomtom home?
just curious went to the tomtom site to purchase the maps for this app. options it gives me is for maps for touch pro but not touch pro 2 does it matter would it have mattered if i p icked anyone arnt the maps all the same?
No, the phone you have doesn't matter. You just have to make sure the maps you are using will work with the version of Navigator you are using.
so im guessing based on that version 7.9 the version 8 mapps will work. However on the site i go to maps for HTC touch pro and under US it only gives me brazil or mexico I cant seem to purchase v8 maps for US. It couldnt be that difficult could it? Also i installed the app from the post but at the end it tellsme the voice options are not avail- was that stripped from this version? So if i can get my hands on the maps will the voice options all return? by voice I mean the person giiving the directions you can pick from anyone and all say no avail to me
Thanks for posting that. I'm another who's been looking for a while to get this to work on my TP2. Tomtom say it won't work & is not compatible with the TP2 but I've just downloaded the one free area map they allow and it works well. All my customers over the next few days are within this map area so I'll be testing it heavily. If it passes that test, I'll pay for the European map from TomTom.
Thanks again.
curious do you need a data plan to use the gps function tomtom? I mean if i bought a tomtom i dont need a data plan so it seems it wouldnt need one on the phone either right since the gps is built in and you just need to capture the satellite signal?
thanks a lot!

For the moment you can receive GPS signals for free
The rapidshare link has exceeded the limit.
OK, I have bought TT7 on microSD - prefviously used on my Kaiser.
I have been trying to install on the TP2, but until now it always gave the 'This product is not compatible with your device' message.
I have copied the contents of the TT7 disc onto my 16gb MicroSD, then installed this cab over the top successfully.
I can now get into the application, but it will not accept the activation code - either that code that came with the TT7 disk, or the code from the maps I previously bought for TT6 (which I migrated to TT7 on the kaiser).
Any ideas? Has anyone successfully used their TP2 with TomTom Home to activate maps etc.?
When I try to link to TomTom Home it says I have an 'invalid version' - so can't transfer my subscriptions. This makes this pretty pointless - as I can't activate a map and can't use TomTom 7 at all.
Has anyone managed to use this successfully?
CoPilot is the way to go for GPS Navigation. I just purchased mine for under $40. I've been using TomTom for a couple years but for those of you interested in going the legit route. Copilot Live 8 should suffice.
thanks

Hey is the VGA version the same as they WVGA version?
TT7
OK, to make looong story, short........that was about 2-3 years ago i owned a Kaiser and then i had a Navigator 6. Therefore i had an account with TT. I tried iPhone, G1, MyTouch, then few days ago i got Rhodium, and now I needed my TT back. I found that link to d/l TT7, installed it, downloaded a free map, worked well. Then i downloaded a TomTomHome from TT website, after installation, it prompted me to get a newer version, so i did. Unfortunately, that new ver kept showing me that my ver of installed software is not a good version, and i couldn't do anything. I wasn't even able to link my Rhodium to my old account . So i have unistalled that new ver of TT Home, got the older version again from their website, when it prompted me again to get newer one, i just pressed "no". Then i bought new maps, downloaded it, created a new "yahoo" email address, created new account with TT, linked me new phone to the site, installed new maps, tested, works perfectly! It seems like big effort, but it was worthed to get new TT7 for only $69, wasn't it?
That way might not work for everyone, i just wanted to share with you guys, how i did it. The only pain in the ......., was that i had to wait close to 1 hour to get those maps d/l, and another 30 or so minutes to get it installed. But, what the hack................

Interesting - which version of TomTom Home are you using? Is it version 2? (I don't think version 1 even recognises TT7). You don't know anywhere I can download a previous version do you? Thanks - you've given me some hope!
