I just had my HTC Touch HD T8282 with MW version 1.14.403.3(22273) WWE. I have several questions and hope to find answers here.
1. Google maps were not already installed, I installed it by myself from mobile.google.com. The program works fine but it does not find any satellite. Is it normal ? I am living in Turkey.
2. Should I upgrade my OS to 1.19... by using the OliNex ? I mean are there any big differences between those two versions ? I don't see any lag on my device currently. Are there so many new properties coming with the new version ? I am using my pda mainly for business.
3. This is my biggest problem. From Start>Programs>Messenger I open Windows Live Messenger. I choose sign in as Busy, Online or Away, etc. Then I click sign in and proceed to mail&password screen. But at that screen I cannot write my e-mail !! I can write my password thus I cannot click the sign in button because the mail is not written. Its the 2 of the 5 steps. What should I do? If the upgrade will fix this issue I will do it immediately. Messenger is a must for me in pda.
4. What is the best source for downloading .cab game files.
Thanks.
google maps no need any satellite you just take data from the google server, all u need is an active internet connection.
u can try IM+ messenger or ebuddy java.
for games u can try some arcade emulator for classic gb, snes or megasis. its really fun 4 me
Please someone help at least about messenger problem !!
Maybe you should try a cooked rom, with some newer sources.
By default, Google Maps doesn't use GPS, since you don't need GPS to show an address on the map, you just need an internet connection.
GPS is useful is you want to locate precisely your current position on the map. In this case, you can force Google Maps to use GPS by going to Menu > Use GPS. (Note that if GPS is not activated, Google Maps will still be able to locate you on the map. I will use your GSM cellular location and show map the area covered by this cellular and in which you are supposed to be)
Okay I understand but using googlemaps via GPRS outside is not free obviously, that's why I ask if GPS works on googlemaps so that it can be free. But it does not either find any satellite, I think this is because of I am in Turkey. What is the best free GPS program just using satellites not any kind of other conneciton. Thanks.
By the way I figured out the messenger problem !!

As long as your maps aren't cached already Google Maps will have to download it. Therefore Google Maps isn't a good solution for outdoor navigation with GPRS (3g), if you have no special data flatrate.

GPS is avaible on the whole globe, even in Turkey .

VisualGPSce is free. A better solution (based on the source of VisualGPSce is BeeLineGPS, which you can try for free 30 days long.

Maybe you should describe what you have done, so others can make profit out of it.
How I solved the messenger problem;
I opened the windows live program. From the options I selected the ''Switch Windows ID''. After that I had the ability of entering my mail adress !!
Can you also say something about:
2. Should I upgrade my OS to 1.19... by using the OliNex ? I mean are there any big differences between those two versions ? I don't see any lag on my device currently. Are there so many new properties coming with the new version ? I am using my pda mainly for business.

I think its up to you, but if there is nothing you are unhappy with and you don't need some of the functionalities provided with the cooked roms you shouldn't do it at all.
Flashing the HardSPL means that you could use your warranty. Even if there is a way backwards, it could get tricky, so at any rate you will have to read through the various topics, so you know what you are doing.
There is also a USPL, which don't changes your SPL, but your device could get bricked, if you try to flash a non-working rom.
what functionalities are provided with the cooked roms ?? I really have no idea about that..

TMC ist a nice thing for navigation-software to react automaticly on current traffic-situations. Most of the software products use this feature.
For this a TMC-receiver must be implemented in the GPS-receiver. The Trinity and other likely PDA´s have it not.
Now my idea - or a simple question:
-----------------------------------
It must be possible to receive data of the current traffic over the i-net over GPRS/UMTS or maybe per SMS. A download in the office or at home over WLAN should be possible to.
Theoreticaly this data can be used for programming a "software-TMC". This could be realise the using of different data-sources for every navigation-software.
I think about using or re-programming the software-com-port in WM5 or higher (start/settings/system/extern gps) which maps the hardware-port com2: to GPD1: by default (other combinations are possible!)
The Point is now:
-----------------
How to integrate the traffic-data into the data-stream of the software-com-port GPD1: (or any equivalent port)
This is only an idea...
Oh yes, before i forget:
Answers contents "Who wants this?", "Using of TMC is free and mobile-internet cost money!" are not wanted. Please forgive, but thats not what i want to hear. I know this fact!
But the using of mobile-internet becomes more cheaper and many users have mobile-data-flatrates or volume-packages! Mobile-Internet is growing more and more!
PSlease forgive my maybe "strange" englisch, but I write text in englisch not very often!
pps:maybe that there exists an software that could do the thing I wanted, but I searched in many forums and search-engines - nothing found...

Route 66 Navigate 7 or 8 and TomTom does just that.
In Route 66 Navigate 7 it's free of charge, in Version 8 and all TomTom Versions it's not.

That´s the point !
I use iGO. This and many other navigation-software has tmc implemented. Using of TMC is free.
I knew the feature of TomTom. TomTom go its own way in providing traffic-information by money. Route66 and Navigate are not my way - I personaly favorite iGO or navigon.
And: I don´t want to change my navi-software.
My endeavor is to use every traffic-information with every software for free!

You sure about Route 66? I've been using Route 66 Navigate 7 for several years, and I could never get traffic to work. I ended up switching to CoPilot Live 7.
Besides the programming of the tool as such I'd expect you'll run into the following issues:
- locate a TMC server that provides the regarding Data for free. Myself I don't use it but I presume e.g. the Route66-Server at least requires a login and that might could be locked to owning the software. TMC-Pro normally is NOT for free!
Alternatively you maybe could grab the Data from a free Traffic Server from HTML, but those normaly don't provide TMC-Pro Data, only the stuff officially announced on the Radio (the "ordinary", free TMC data; at least it is like that in Germany) and hence are not really very useful.
- reprogramming/hacking of the regarding Routing Software so it accepts the Data from a Com-Port or anything. At least the commercial Programs hardly are free so I'd presume you'd need to hack it - and that is illegal, anyway.
I'm not aware of any routing Software provided under the GPL, but maybe I'm mistaken there.
Hence I think this is gonna be a very difficult task, though I definitely like the idea!
Cheers,
Markus.

Sorry, but you can not use TMC with TomTom...
But with Igo an Navigon, so it would be real a great thing,
when we were able to download the tmc data.

That is not exactly correct.
While you can't use a TMC receiver with Tomtom their online Traffic Service provides just those data.
If I got it correctly that's just the bit Jassi_1975 wants to be replaced by a free of charge alternative.
Cheers,
Markus.

Using Navigon I'm very interested aswell. Before Navigon I had Alturion and it worked great. Since Alturion stopped marketing I miss it. Navigon has the option TMC it only doesn't work with GPRS, just with a BT mouse. Having a Kaiser I find it ridiculous buying an extra BT mouse only for TMC (I have a flat free GPRS abo). Being a noob I have to rely on the experts on the forum, so please have a look
The idea is great.
I had this idee a while ago but aint that good programmer.
My idea wat to use a website in the NL (where I live) and get traffic data from that,
store it on your device in a file, next emulate a TMC port for fo rinstance igo and you dont have to hack the program.

That´s right, there are some services in html from where we could free collect the traffic-informations. Maybe it´s usefull to plan an "ONLINE-Collector" or so ...
But think about:

I don´t want to reprogramm/hack any Routing Software - I want to reprogramm (or hack) the given "port-switching" in Windows-Mobile!
So ANY Software which uses TMC can use ANY provided traffic-information. Ok any information we can collect.

Great idea! There are plenty of free sites with traffic info available, so if you can get this to work it would be awesome. I'd love to test it if you ever get it going. Good luck!
When you think further, it would be possible, that the programm runs in backround an updates every 5 Minutes, perhabs, so you would be able to have the latest traffic messages on your device!
I was looking for the same thing as I used MIO Map. I gave up and now I'm using Garmin Mobile XT which uses I-net and downloads realtime traffic. I don't have any idea how it does it though. Hopefully someone can come up with a solution!
Chris
I don't thing that this is really a big problem to make, the only programm is to someone to do this!
Add me on to the list of people wanting this solution. My personal favourite navigation software is IGo, and ONLY reason I sometimes switch over to TomTom is because I have traffic subscription and it works. If it works with IGo, it would be bye-bye TomTom.
If someone comes up with a solution, i'm willing to donate/pay for it.
same here, if it's worldwide
i will also donate round about 10$ , what about you other guys?
Some devices have built in FM Radio with RDS. Why not use this feature for traffic info?
greetings

You'll need a GPS app that uses full map sets, I think TomTom used predefined maps.
but where

any one know how to get WM 6.1 on my HTC Touch
You'll have to flash a custom ROM with a 3.XX radio that will enable GPS. All Touch's come stock from carriers with a 1.XX radio. Check out the Vogue forum at PPCGeeks, there are tons of ROM's available. Just be sure to read EVERYTHING before you do this or it may end in you having no phone at all!

I have an unlimited data plan but I will be away this summer to another country. So I did a bit of search and found this solution: offline Google Map. The google map application won't cache the map (called tiles). You need (a) a software on your pc to download the tiles and (b) a software on your phone to display them.
(b) can be done using this software http://www.mgmaps.com/index.php. It will also do Yahoo, Live ... maps as well when you are online.
(a) can be done using the combination of the web apps here http://www.mgmaps.com/create and the gMapMaker application.
The process is described here:http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?t=1116
It is labor intensive. I only need one city map in India so it works for me. But it won't be a reliable solution for the long term.

Great find! I haven't looked at, or plan on it, but looks like a great solution for anybody without the data plan.
Hi Iam looking for geocaching software for my touch diamond, has anybody experience with programs or can recommend an app ??
Thanks for help !!
I use tracky. www.trackthisout.com
It is a little confusing to use at first, but it uses GPS, downloads maps from google, downloads near caches from geocaching.com and when you click a cache it will load the info in a web page.
Like I say though, its confusing to use at first, but I like it.
try fugawi its a pc app with ppc software built in to sync maps routes etc in the uk it uses ordenance survey maps and has a geocaching feature.
i've not used the geocaching bit but the navigation is great ! you can buy it from amazon uk but make sure you get at least version four as last time i looked they where still selling version two !
Hey guys.
Im looking for GPS programs/softwares that are compatiable with the X1.
I heard many like TomTom, Garmin, etcetc..
Just wondering if there are any other recommened GPS softwares that do not require any internet connectivity. (for use especially in Asia countries)
Thanks!
TomTom doesn't require internet connectivity. I have TT7 on my X1 and do not use any data while navagating (I have not enabled QuickGPS which would use some data though).
I find TT7 very good and prefer it to my cars inbuilt gps.
I also use run.gps uv trainer as an exercise log - again no data connection needed.
A lot of GPS software don't use data. Garmin, Tomtom.. all you have to do is pre-load what maps you need on the card and your good to go.
I have tried all of them and IMHO the best one is IGO8.

I really like the UI on TomTom and I've been using it in both my WinMo's. Currently v7.910 in my X1 with the latest European maps and it works like a charm.
QuickGPS is set to automatically download data only when I attach the X1 to a computer.
I am pretty convinced that other nav software like Navigon and iGO will work fine too. Stick to one of the most popular because you will be able to find much more resources on the web, POIs and such.
Are they free? Or do i have to pay for the softwares?

Some are free, some you have to pay for.
Here's a good index of a lot of free GPS programs, you can read about them and see what fits your needs best:
http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfw.html#WindowsMobile
what im about to request is quite demanding...
so.. please do not take it to heart.
Can you provide(or spoonfeed) me with one thats is totally free, with all maps downloaded so that i do not need internet connectivity when i use my GPS. Best is it comes with Asia maps.
(the list Flying H4x0r gave is too confusing.. and i couldnt figure which requires interenet, and which doesnt)
Thank you.
There are GPS Tools for free but there is no free navigation system on the market that does real offline navigation like TomTom, Navigon etc. So, forget it.
Google maps require an internet connection right?
mobile gmaps (google mgmaps) support online and offline maps. it is a java app and similar to google maps in operation. It does not do turn by turn navigation - but its better than nothing and its free.
garmin is your best bet. There are ways to get it free, but that would be highly ILLEGAL and i dont recommend it.

The backlight doesn't stay on, the phone keeps entering stand by. That's really annoying, and it doesn't happen with Tom Tom 7.
Is it just me not configuring something?

go to settings (on your garmin) -> Display -> backlight override -> tick always on
otherwise just go to your phone setting ->system -> power -> advanced -> untick the "turn of device if not used for...."
when the system goes to sleep, it cuts off the gps connection. It took me a while to figure that out. LOL

Do you mean GPS (Global Positioning System) or GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)!
If first, simply search and install HTC GPS Tool for activating your intenal GPS! The Tool is really self-explaining! If you meant GPRS, yo'll need a special data option from your provider for a fixed amount of money each month!

It uses the Internet connection to download Google Maps data.
GPS is used for getting your actual position. With that position Google Maps will download a card snippet representing your actual position.

Dude... there are 2 types of GPS technology. GPS and AGPS(AsssistedGPS). programs like Google maps uses AGPS service, means, they use a packet service (GPRS/EDGE), to get a faster GPS fix. If you choose a GPS program, say Satguide etc.. they completely rely on GPS (can work without GPRS/EDGE), but you have to pay for the service and maps. You might get trial versions of these softwares, but i dont think any of them provides it for free.
Alternatively you could try GPS cycle computer, which would track ur path, speed, directions, altitude... , but it is not designed to overlay your current location on a map. However, it can provide you with a graph details about your route.
dude download map my india software....i will send u india's map........its free to use and dosent need any gprs connection
