[REQ] Are there ANY software options for using GPS navigation in the US???

Hi all -
Is there ANY legitimate (non-warez) software for the Diamond that has US maps?
Tomtom - Version 6 doesn't list Diamond as a supported device, not sure it does VGA resolution, Version 7 there's no legitimate source for US maps.
iGo - no US maps
CoPilot - no US maps
Route 66 - seems to require an SD card
Garmin Mobile - requires SD card
Ostia - requires SD card
I just want to legitimately use my Diamond for navigation, but having a hard time finding any options. I've searched through the forums, but had no luck.

you sure about that? i have them on my tomtom7 and they work perfect (aside from missing some new construction)

google maps

My Diamond came with Route66 on a DVD. However I needed to contact the supportdesk since i couldn't install it using the standard setup. They emailed me how to install it without using the setup.exe; search this forum or google and you find instructions how to install route66 on your diamond.

Why don't you just copy the contents of the SD card's maps to your phone's Internal Storage? That's what I did and I've been able to use both TomTom and now OnCourse Navigator (iGO) 8.

Thanks for your reply. I had a couple questions if you dont mind:
I have Tomtom 6 on my old P3600. I'm guessing you purchased a Version 6 DVD and used that to load up your Diamond.
- Does TomTom 6 support the Diamond's VGA resolution?
- When you loaded it on your device, did the TomTom Home software recognize your device? If not, did you have to select a device from a list and which device did you select?
- I'm pretty sure TomTom stopped supporting the Ver. 6 maps. It's a bummer but I can live with it. Can you confirm your experiece / have you been able to update your maps?

Is OnCourse a part of iGo? The reason I ask is because the OnCourse site lists US maps, but the software is apparently only capable of 320 x 240 (QVGA) resolution, while I think iGo 8 is capable of full 640 x 480 (VGA). If I could use the iGo 8 with the OnCourse US maps, that would be a good solution.
Were there any issues with just copying the SD data to your device? Others such as Garmin have required all sorts of finagling to get them to work such as keygens and such, and I really want to avoid any of that.

Just to add another older version, I run TomTom 5 on my Diamond in the USA with no problems at all.

You can definitely get US maps for iGo (i'm running it), but I'm not sure of the legality of it, so it's probably best not to discuss it here.

Hi Nomer -
I like the Garmin software, especially since it has nautical maps available. However, I read elsewhere that the SD card version can't be used with our phones because there is an internal code that prevents their software from being used without the SD. Since I don't want any keygen or other cracks, I don't think this is an option. Anything I do I want to have be fuloly supported by the company and their service department.

Yeah, OnCourse is the name for iGo in the United States. You can use the maps from one for the other since it is the same. For copying the contents, the only problem I ran into was that it couldn't find the directory where the maps are located. To overcome that, you'll need to do a search of the Diamond thread, but the most important thing is to change a certain config file so that it reads from the Internal Storage instead of SD.

My version of TT6 was on an SD card. I just changed the communication mode on the TD from Activsync to USB and connected it to the PC. Then put SD card in card reader and copied all files over. When I unplugged the USB lead TT automatically started to instal (that got me panicing a bit!). Went through normal installation, got correct code from TTcodes and it installed and automically found the internal receiver.
No new version 6 maps coming out, but plenty of old ones still for sale from TT - I bought one for Southern Africa a few weeks ago and could not find any errors in it when I used it when driving around Western Cape province on holiday.
TT6 works fine with the VGA screen - but everything is smaller - I find I now use 3D view rather than 2D I used to as that comes up bigger (as it does on all screens)
Another poster here today says when he installed TT Home 2.5 and plugged in his TD it automatically offered him a free copy of TT7.9 along with demo map. Still have to buy version 7 maps but they are more up to date than version 6 - although there have been lots of reports of them still not showing changes in roads.

Navigon Mobile Navigator 5 works on the Diamond and European and US maps are available. I believe it must be the same for MN6 and 7.

Wow, just saw this, TomTom maps for US and Canada - anyone know if these will work with TT7???

Landshark - at the moment TT are not listing any maps for US or Canada for TTN7 - presumably because no legal version of that is available there. Strangely they do list maps for Mexico and Brazil!
In reality the price quoted for those (presumably Version 6) maps seems expensive - you can download US & Canada maps (version 6.75) direct from TT website for $70.

Best Sat Nav software for HD?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, not sure where to post it.
Anyway, does you guys know which is the best software for the Touch HD?
I've heard TomTom Navigator 7 seems to work really well (but I can't find it on their website) and that Garmin has lag issues.
I currently have CoPilot, which I was really happy with on my previous phone (XDA Orbit 2), however because of the Touch HD's resolution, CoPilot is all blurry as it tries to fill the screen.
Any suggestions, or ideas on getting Copilot working fine?

Personally ive used tomtom from my old N70 upto the HD and its great.

I would suggest you check with CoPilot as they now list HD as compatible and probably have a new version.
I personally use Route66 which is very good and does not need any special Tweaks, like TT, etc.
I would also suggest to search this forum as there are several Threads that deal exactly with your question.

you could also try navigon mn7, thee's a free 30days trial available on their website... i really like it, however to run it on the hd you have to do some tweaking (exchange 3 files), which is described in the corresponding thread

Do I need data service to use the GPS?
I apologize for my ignorance question, but let's say I get one of the softwares, (tomtom) on my HD. After that do I need a data service to work on the GPS or it can work by itself ?

Data is not required for them because they use space on your SD card to hold the maps unlike google maps which downloads the maps as necessary.
My tomtom map of US and Canada takes up 800mb of my SD card.
Tomtom 7.910.9185 comes with a VGA version so it looks perfect on the HD.

That's correct. BUT:
1. You do need a good size SD card - 2 gig is really a minimum as the navigation maps typically are around 1 gig
2. Most of the navigation apps do want to access the internet (normally you can disable that) so that the app can check for updates and ALSO useful stuff like POIs or traffic updates.

I have TTN7, Navngo iGo8 and Copilot installed on my THD.
Though it's the easiest to use, I rarely use TTN7 because their "Supported Devices" policy meant that they effectively 'stole' 9 months of my Traffic subscription when I upgraded to the THD and wouldn't let me activate any new maps I would have purchased - stupid really as TTN7 works beautifully on my THD and they could have got £80 out of me. I have similar problems with them with my SPV M3100 but I managed to beat them into submission in the end, but it took a full 2 months of fighting. I'll not be advising my parents to replace their dying TTOne V1 with another TT unit either - there goes another £150! Traffic and other value added services (Weather, Buddies are supplied via GPRS/3G.
iGo8 is only supplied on a 2GB SD card and is tied to it so there's no room available for any other stuff (media, etc.) which may not be a problem when you have ready access to the SD card slot but is utterly STUPID in my opinion for the THD where you'll have to constantly be taking the back cover on and off. Natively it does not appear to come with a 800x480 skin for the THD either. It is possible to move it off the SD card but then it becomes a ***** to set up and doesn't seem to store any of the setting changes you make from the menus. It doesn't have full postcode addressing, is a bit of a learning curve to use and perhaps isn't that intuitive. Traffic is supplied via TMC (requires receiver but otherwise free in the UK) and other services are limited. Terrain awareness is interesting when you get into hilly areas as are 3D buildings when you get into populous areas. All in all a bit of a geek's app.
Copilot I would say sits beween the two. Not as easy to use and customisable as TTN but not as much of a head-fit as iGo. It comes on CD (or download for the THD version) so you can use whichever SD card you like, does have full postcode addressing and traffic is supplied via GPRS/3G + subscription (half the price of TT too). The customer service team get a thumbs up from me too - over and above those 'A*!$HOLES' at TT (my opinion and not necessarily the opinion of the Xda-Developers team). Other value added services that are offered by TT are lacking. The THD version of Copilot does not come with, and I believe is incompatible with, the Copilot Central PC app.
All are supported by the defacto Speed Camera Database from PocketGPSWorld (other databases may be available! ).
I hope this has been of some help.

I find that TT7 on my HD is very reliable but basic while mobile navigator is far better quality but not very reliable atm (real view is amazing, but everytime it comes up it throws an error). Once I get mobile navigator to play nice, I think it would be the best navigator for the HD

I have a garmin nvi in my car but I rather use my HD with Igo8 when on foot. used it in keacow, Poland last week and loved the buildings thats are added to the map

AFAIK the Tomtom software is free, you only pay for the maps, but I could be wrong. I'm using 7.915.9196 which is VGA and works fine
I don't think there is any TP2 specific software on the market but there is loads of WM6 stuff

same here, no problems at all. already tookm a trip, relied on it, and trip went perfect

TomTom is shipped with some devices. But it's not freeware!

TomTom just made TomTom 7 available on their website for PocketPC's.
TomTom works just fine on the Rhodium probably.

TOM TOM software is not free. and will not currently work with TP2. well the home software dont work. So i cant get the map i purchased. And they wont refund as i was not using a licensed version of software so definitely not free and not officially working

tom tom navigator works purfect on the TP2, have it on mine

I Have tomtom 7.450 installed on my tp2 and its working well for me.

I had version 7.910.9185 which didn't install.
I have now installed 7.915.9196 but it is asking to activate the map and wants an activation code.
So I went to ttcode.com to get one and it needs the product code. I can't find the product code anywhere, tomtom.com myorders doesn't mention one and tomtom home just shows the map version.
As far as I can make out from tomtom's help version ttn7 onwards don't use product codes.
So how do I get the activation code?

iam new here and from germany.
Last week i got my new TP2 (branded by T-Mobile, now called "MDA Vario V")
i tried to install following versions:
Mod Edit: NO MENTION OF WAREZ PERMITTED
so,
if i install the programm on my "phone-storage" i got the warning "BTTrayCE is not a valiued application..."
if i install it on my sd-card i got NO warnings.
but in every versions i got the problem that the software do not find my extractet maps. I searched for a long time and tried different folders, and now its 11:00PM and i dont have any nerves left
i hope somebody can help me and gimme a detailed instructure how to get my tomtom running.

There should be a ttnavigator.bif file on the root of the storage card which you can open up in notepad and find the code in there...I think.

if you have live services like traffic and speed cameras then 7.915 is useless as you cannot enable traffic (bug). There is also a definate lag on the GPS side of things compared to my TYTNII. Tomtom at present do not officially support the TP2, although when i phoned them they were more than happy to assist. TTHome is not worth bothering with till they release a version that is compatible with it. I kept on getting errors about device id not matching even though you select to change it and TomTom had reset my account. Gave up in the end and have copied speed cameras manually and traffic is now working.

You can indeed install Tomtom 6 on it, but BEFORE you do I highly recommend you install a utility called WVGAFIX3. What it does is allow you to change the resolution on your TP2.
Change it to VGA (640x480), then install and run TomTom. It's a bit of a pain toggling between resolutions at the moment, but once a WVGA version of tomtom is released then problem solved.
Got the radio working thanks to the CAB on here, and the 1% batt driver!

Why TT6? TT7.915.916 runs great on my Rhodium. No hassle with resolutions or anything.

[APP] TomTom Navigator 7.916.9189.1 [QVGA/VGA/WVGA]

TomTom has been posted on the forums for years now. This is the latest version (specifically the VGA/WVGA version) that works with the Touch Pro 2. I have custom packaged it so that it will not mess up an existing Bluetooth stack, as well as removing the Today plugin (which I personally think is garbage).
If this package somehow violated the TOS of this site (I can't imagine how, a quick search produces multiple links on these forums), then I apologize. TomTom doesn't seem to make available/support the software for Windows Mobile PDAs on their Website (iPhone is there though, how odd). Their policy has always seemed to be the sale of maps, so I'm releasing these packages with that in mind.
Note: DO NOT ask me for maps. Do not ask any question about where to get them. Purchase v8 maps from TomTom. If you use software, support the developer (so they can keep their job and make better/new software) by actually PAYING for it. I know, its a novel concept.

just curious went to the tomtom site to purchase the maps for this app. options it gives me is for maps for touch pro but not touch pro 2 does it matter would it have mattered if i p icked anyone arnt the maps all the same?

No, the phone you have doesn't matter. You just have to make sure the maps you are using will work with the version of Navigator you are using.

so im guessing based on that version 7.9 the version 8 mapps will work. However on the site i go to maps for HTC touch pro and under US it only gives me brazil or mexico I cant seem to purchase v8 maps for US. It couldnt be that difficult could it? Also i installed the app from the post but at the end it tellsme the voice options are not avail- was that stripped from this version? So if i can get my hands on the maps will the voice options all return? by voice I mean the person giiving the directions you can pick from anyone and all say no avail to me

Thanks for posting that. I'm another who's been looking for a while to get this to work on my TP2. Tomtom say it won't work & is not compatible with the TP2 but I've just downloaded the one free area map they allow and it works well. All my customers over the next few days are within this map area so I'll be testing it heavily. If it passes that test, I'll pay for the European map from TomTom.

OK, I have bought TT7 on microSD - prefviously used on my Kaiser.
I have been trying to install on the TP2, but until now it always gave the 'This product is not compatible with your device' message.
I have copied the contents of the TT7 disc onto my 16gb MicroSD, then installed this cab over the top successfully.
I can now get into the application, but it will not accept the activation code - either that code that came with the TT7 disk, or the code from the maps I previously bought for TT6 (which I migrated to TT7 on the kaiser).
Any ideas? Has anyone successfully used their TP2 with TomTom Home to activate maps etc.?

When I try to link to TomTom Home it says I have an 'invalid version' - so can't transfer my subscriptions. This makes this pretty pointless - as I can't activate a map and can't use TomTom 7 at all.
Has anyone managed to use this successfully?

CoPilot is the way to go for GPS Navigation. I just purchased mine for under $40. I've been using TomTom for a couple years but for those of you interested in going the legit route. Copilot Live 8 should suffice.

How did you activate the maps?

just curious and this is a noob question. why would i need the data plan i presume for the maps or routing? when i open the tom tom it never gives me gps signal however if i connect to wifi within seconds i get gps signal? i cant seem to rout anywhere the maps all show blank until i connect to wifi?

OK, to make looong story, short........that was about 2-3 years ago i owned a Kaiser and then i had a Navigator 6. Therefore i had an account with TT. I tried iPhone, G1, MyTouch, then few days ago i got Rhodium, and now I needed my TT back. I found that link to d/l TT7, installed it, downloaded a free map, worked well. Then i downloaded a TomTomHome from TT website, after installation, it prompted me to get a newer version, so i did. Unfortunately, that new ver kept showing me that my ver of installed software is not a good version, and i couldn't do anything. I wasn't even able to link my Rhodium to my old account . So i have unistalled that new ver of TT Home, got the older version again from their website, when it prompted me again to get newer one, i just pressed "no". Then i bought new maps, downloaded it, created a new "yahoo" email address, created new account with TT, linked me new phone to the site, installed new maps, tested, works perfectly! It seems like big effort, but it was worthed to get new TT7 for only $69, wasn't it?
That way might not work for everyone, i just wanted to share with you guys, how i did it. The only pain in the ......., was that i had to wait close to 1 hour to get those maps d/l, and another 30 or so minutes to get it installed. But, what the hack................

Interesting - which version of TomTom Home are you using? Is it version 2? (I don't think version 1 even recognises TT7). You don't know anywhere I can download a previous version do you? Thanks - you've given me some hope!

Copilot

Normally I`m using Navigon but Copilot is much faster and is getting quicker a fix...but it always stopps when the HD2 - after 1 minute - stopps. With Navigon it doesn`t stopp - do I have to change it in Copilot software or at HD2 ?
How content are you with Copilot generally?

If you mean it goes into standby, you can turn that off in the settings in Copilot. (It's in menu, settings, backlight).
If you don't mean that, can you explain a bit more?

To be honest, I've only used it a couple of times. I've always been a TomTom user, but Copilot is so cheap that I'm probably gonna get it. I don't really use POIs either. I simply use it for getting from A to B!
For that, it's nicer than TomTom. It looks better and seems more accurate (despite the fact that accuracy is probably very little to do with software, and more the GPS!)
I also like the pinch-to-zoom in it. It just looks really nice.

Copilot is much better than Navigon and of course TT !

Sorry to hijack this thread slightly (!), but can Copilot be used for navigating on foot?
I am a TomTom user via PNDs in vehicles normally, and would only ever really use my phone to navigate if I was on foot - for this TomTom is no good with.
Also, on a related topic, does Copilot make use of the built-in electronic compass - ie. does it know which way you are facing before you start moving (again a key thing when navigating on foot!)?

Yes it can, also by automobile, motorcycle, bicycle and RV (whatever that is).
I don't think it does work with the built-in compass, which is probably no bad thing as the compass is not that accurate.
I've been using CoPilot Live for two years now and I find it excellent. On the HD2 screen it's brilliant and is very smooth with the fast processor. Don't forget to also download CoPilot Central Live which is a desktop application that lets you plan your routing on your PC and send it to the phone & vice versa. You can download it for free HERE although you'll only get the most out of it if you have CoPilot installed on your phone. Have a look at the CoPilot User Manual HERE[url].
For the money, it's a superb bit bit of software.
Edit: Sorry, my mistake. You could do planning on version 1 of CoPilot Central but it seems they've removed that on version 2. But you can still plan journeys on the desktop using Google Earth and import them via CoPilot Central version 2 though in KML format..

Purchased yesterday, and for the price, cant fault it.

CoPilot 8 Live Au
I've been using it for 2 weeks and like it. Pinch to zoom is great and the graphics are better than TT.
The trial allowed me to download an Au map but unfortunately I can't purchase it here in Aus so I've loaded TT7.
Will buy Copilot 8 when it becomes available here if the price is right.
Copilot 7 was outrageous at over $200Au.

Had co-pilot since 3.5 days.
It has always had odd issues just as Tom Tom (I used the latter when it was Palmtop Route Planner and City Maps for Psion and Palm) has ... dodgy post codes and some addresses and sometimes very odd routing.
It is a shame that they have removed the old desktop s/w ... but given I have the full CPL6 ... I still have that.
In 8, it also appears that the free traffic camera integration from PocketGPS is missing ... I think they are going to charge for that when available in the UK.
I love the fact that in 8, you get speed indication for the road you are on. It probably isn't completely accurate ... but a nice touch.
It is prettier ... but slightly less configurable than previous versions.
Lock with the HD2 is incredible ... 7 satellites in my study when I used to struggle for a lock with the TyTNII ... not sure how HTC have managed that.
As someone else mentioned ... for the cost .... it seems mad not to enable it. I have 7" Sat Nav in both my cars ... so I don't need it unless I'm in someone else's car ... but it's still worth it for planning routes.
Perhaps the best thing is it's ability to have multiple stops. This can be used to guide CPL not to use stupid routes.

QWERTY and Contacts search?
I'm agreeing that for the price it seems like a winner. I too am a TomTom user and have sat nav in all the vehicles I use regularly, but well always a nice-to-have!
Two things that I can't figure out with it though:
1) How do I change to a QWERTY keyboard for address entry etc?
2) When I'm searching my contacts - it doesn't actually search - I seem to have to type it in exactly.. can this not be changed?

I want to know if you can change it to QWERTY too.
For the price, you'll struggle to beat it, however I do prefer TomTom, the quick/shortcut button on the screen on TT7 is damned useful..
Also can you change how it plans your route, speed/distance etc the same as on TT?

I'd love to get a QWERTY keyboard on Copilot too! It does bug me when apps have their own keyboards in them. I can't see it happening though. REALLY would love to be wrong in this case though!

I've got a question about CoPilot.
How the heck do you remove it? There is no uninstall option in the Remove Programs
Can you just delete it from the storage card and remove the icons? This seems a bit ham fisted.
I need the space for my TT maps

1. According to the faq on the website of CoPilot the querty keyboard is planned for one of the updates of CoPilot 8 in the future.

I bought and activated the trial of Copliot 8 that was on my hd2, and I like it.... I've run it alongside Tomtom too and it sometimes chooses slightly different routes, but it's not failed to get m eto my destination yet. For £24.99 you can't go wrong. However There is a problem that I can't add custome poi's such as the gps pocket camera database... seems to be a bug with a specific version of 8, which is a little annoying.

I bought it when it first appeared in the early beta roms...
I really like it, although bicycle mode does seem to want to send me on some bizarre routes and round the wrong way on roundabouts.
and some streets don't seem to have house numbers (mine included)

I tried Copilot several days in Paris.
What I can say is that this software is really really bad.... Except you like to be lost or are fond of wrong way streets.

I have contacted the customer service about this question and they told me that canary ARE present in europe map.
Are you planning holidays in canary? Me too I'm ready to go in about 15days for 3-4 months in Fuerteventura
