I have repeatedly difficulties in using my German T-Mobile Vario II as a USB modem for my laptop computer.
As long as there was no or few additional software installed it worked fine as described. I started the wireless modem application on Vario II, started the modem, plugged the USB cable into my laptop, installed the driver and was successfully online by using the dialer application.
But after installing some more software on Vario II, such as MS VoiceCommand, PhoneAlarm, Tomtom Navigator 5.21, something seems to fail at its USB interface. After starting the wireless modem application and starting modem mode neigther my laptop nor my desktop PC will recognize the TyTN as a USB device any longer. The PCs even do not detect a USB device being plugged in, similar to plugging in a cable with nothing connected at the other end.
At the Vario II side the power LED won't go on as it normally will do when connected to USB because of recharging its battery. So it seems the TyTN USB interface is totally dead in modem emulation mode. As soon as I will stop the modem emulation on TyTN the PC will immediately recognize a USB device beeing plugged in, so there is no hardware failure with the USB interface.
After re-enabling ActiveSync the Vario II will synchronise normally. Doing soft resets and full power-off/on cycles will not solve the problem, only doing a hard reset with erasing of memory will help. As this problem has ocurred already twice with my device and I will have to do a further hard reset now, I would be very interested in knowing what is really causing this problem and how to avoid it or repair it without need for a complete re-installation every time.
Has anybody else to deal with the same problem or is it unique to my device?
Regards, Gerd
Hi Gerd,
I also have this problem, do you know if this has been resolved yet?
Regards,
Chris.

This happenned to me this week too. I ahve been away and uising the device as a modem all week but it completely disabled my active sync. I had to rr install it when I got home! WHen I ran tomtom it told the modem disconnected and vice verse.

You may try to Un-Check the "advanced" setting of USB conection (Settings>Connection>USB to PC setting.... it works for many other USB related problems.
When you installed the GPS for TomTom did you choose to use COM8?
That breaks wireless modem on Orange UK M3100 and UK T-Mobile VarioII's..(and you get EXACTLY the behaviour shown - as well as an error if you try to turn off the advanced mode for usb connect on activesync) so i guess its the same on all tytn's..
try changing any com ports you have set to different values and see if it works..
USB Modem problems
Hi,
If all esle fails, try pdanet. It can be used on trial free for 10 days and then costs $20 from memory. It works first time, every time for me after weeks of hassle with usb modem.
Highly reccommended for none techies.

pdanet web site
I forgot to add the web site

You may still have the same problem with PDANet. I installed it and it connected without any other changes. I was very impressed until the next time I tried to syncronise as the ActiveSync didn't recognise my TyTn was attached (via USB cable)!
However it appears to be fixed by unchecking the "advanced" setting of USB conection on the PocketPC as suggested previously.

I could get my TyTn to sync with my computer occasionally after installing AS 4.2, but ActiveSync would still disconnect itself from my device after a few minutes (I could get it to sync most times though, but I'd have to shuffle round USB ports etc)... Installed ActiveSync 4.5.0 beta (build 5509 BETA) last night, and now my phone won't sync AT ALL with my PC. AS can't even see the device, it can see it's been plugged in because it kicks into action, but nothing more ever happens apart from the (useless) Troubleshooter coming up.
Just a word of warning... Don't install 4.5 beta unless you're absolutely certain it'll work. I've gone from a somewhat-functional sync ability to absolutely nothing at all, and now I'm going to have to rollback my ActiveSync installation (if I can!)
That and the fact my TyTn won't even see my bluetooth headset (an Avro GW-BT-002, which my Alpine can both see and use absolutely fine), I'm beginning to get a little frustrated with this device.
Further proof that more often than not:
BETA = BROKEN
I've had the beta AS 4.5 for a week now and no problems whatsoever with dopod CHT9000 (hardware) using latest i-mate, dopod, or cingular ROM's.
All of these ROM's all work perfectly with sony-ericsson hbh-ds970 bluetooth headset.
After you upgraded to 4.5, did you delete your PC from the activesync partnership and rebuild a new partnership?
* Activesync > Options > press on desktop computer's name and delete it. Then, delete mobile device from desktop AS. You'll then be asked if you want to keep your file directory. Afterwards, reboot pocketpc and connect with usb cable or over bt.
It does work.
Cheers
Yep, did exactly that.
AS 4.5 works perfect with my prophet.
Issues:
Had to set-up my device again (old settings disappeared)
All programs that I installed via active sync before were gone
Top:
Improved speed of syncing files
Easier change of settings
Robin
Hmm. Beginning to wonder if I have either a dodge device, because my Alpine always synced fine
4.5 works for me with my TyTN. (slow as hell - but works).
/Martin
I can't get it to work, either. It completely blew away my partnerships...
I've gone back to AS4.2 and will wait for this to go GA before making this mistake again...
Dopod 838 Pro
Worked a treat on mine. No issues whatsoever. Biggest difference I can see is a different looking AS icon
Bloody hell...
... Beginning to think it's my computer, might end up reinstalling Windows on it this weekend. Annoyinggggggggg.
After a crap installation of AS4.5, downgraded back to 4.2, but it's still not seeing my TyTn at all, so I'm figuring that it's more likely to be a PC problem. It's not the best Windows installation either, it's become bogged down with stuff, and it never worked right after I made a couple of 'tweaks'... That's me, always fiddling with things when they work fine in the first place
I'm having similar issues with my TyTN, installed 4.5 on my PC, plug in my PDA and it starts charging (via USB) but ActiveSync can't find it, although does state that USB is available, just keeps searching?!
ActiveSync needs rebuilding from the floor, its always been a rather 'naff' featureless product.

I had the same problem. Hard reset of my XDA Exec and it worked. draw yor own conclusions.
Have you tried turning off the "USB advanced network functionality" - this seemed to sort the same problem out for me;
go start - settings - connections - USB to PC - untick box "Enable advanced network functionality"
You are aware that AS 4,5 REQUIRES Outlook 2003 !?!?
otherwise it will not work at all
That beta works fine. The only problem I've had is related to remote NDIS interfering with my soft firewall, even after all access rules allowing it. Only workaround is to disable smart ARP filtering in Outpost Firewall or change transfer mode of phone to Serial and everythin is gravy for sync.
Your problem seems related to device manager misconfig of the device or something else.
why don't you try this from start --> run --> cmd line
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
Then, once device manager loads, click view --> show hidden devices. From there, scroll down to network adapters, expand, and delete any instance of Windows Mobile-based Device. On the phone, delete Activesync relationship with PC. Then reboot computer, and plug in your phone again. Let us know if that solved your problem.
I had numerous issues with AS4.2 and AS4.5 Beta initially. And I had issues with Vista RC2 (both x64 and x86) syncing with the WMDC B3 as well.
Then it dawned on me that I was connecting my 838pro to the computer via a Belkin USB hub. So I removed the sync cable from the hub and directly attached to the computer. Now I have no more problems whatsoever (that's in the past 2 weeks.....)
So the moral is: DIRECTLY CONNECT YOUR Hermes TO THE COMPUTER'S USB PORTS!
Just put AS4.5B2 on today - no real probs - no real improvements

Hi christopherwoods
I am sorry if this is the wrong forum but its the only one I could find with reference to my bluetooth headset.
I am the owner of an Avro GW-BT-002 bluetooth headset which was free with my old mobi. Unfortunately I can no longer remember how to set it up or any of the other settings to use with my new Motorola V3x 3G phone. Is there any possiblity that you could post the instructions of its settings etc to this forum for me.
Many many thanks

Same Issue - Fixed
I had a problem with ActiveSync after upgrading to 4.2.
I am now running 4.5B and it is working after deleting prior partnerships from my handheld.
(I am running Outlook 2007)
ActiveSync 4.5 finally working!
I had the same problems with ActiveSync 4.5 (beta) until I actually put in the original install disk I had with the phone (it had ActiveSync 3.7 on it) when I first tried to connect my phone and it wouldn't detect it. 4.5 (beta) is now working fine for me!
Hi!
I'm new to Universal, but I'm getting along with most of the features.
The only problem is: I cannot sync using WM6.
The problem:
I plug the USB in, the PDA connects, Activesync (on PC) starts and setting up itself... and stuck! When I check the AS on my Universal, it says:
"To synchronize your device with a desktop computer, install the synchronization software from the Getting Started Disc included with your device on your PC:"
And then something about Exchange Sync.
The connection is OK, the device gets IP, and so on.
I installed the original (4.1) AS, but (no surprise) it cannot sync with WM6.
Must I revert to WM5? I don't want to...
Anyone any sollution?
Install Version 4.5 of ActiveSync! Only this one is able to sync with WM6!
Look here!
Sorry, I didn't emphasize that I have AS 4.5 installed.
This way goes the message like I wrote.
So thank you for your reply, but sadly, this is not the sollution.
(I installed/uninstalled AS several times in the last two days... But for WM6 4.1 isn't good, for 4.5 it says use the GS Disc... The only way out (as I think) is to go back to WM5 to use 4.1... But that way I will miss some new stuff from Crossbow.)
Almost solved
Hope somebody still reading or finding this topic.
What I discovered that the error message mentioned was not because of the wrong ActiveSync version. It was because the AS on the PDA cannot communicate with the AS on PC. I explain. I flashed WM5 back and installed AS 4.1, but the error message was still there. But the text went like "install ActiveSync on PC..." So it connects, gets IP, but cannot see that AS is installed. And the sollution?
Bluetooth sync
Yeah, AS over BT works. Connects, syncs without problem. I think I'll have to stick to that option.
Why doesn't it work over USB?
Switched the cable -> still no luck. Tried WM5torage with USB -> it works!
So it looks like it's a software problem, just a rare case (?). I'll work with the troubleshooter later, until than: BT.
Good day to all.

in your first post you said you cannot sync at all using wm6... and then in the next post you said you can sync using bluetooth... seems like you already found the solution to your problem... use BT...
just a thought though... if BT sync is really working and usb is not.... then there's a problem with your cord... otherwise, its the software.... its either activesync version... or a firewall is blocking a port that prevents the sync during usb connection
Thanks for reply.
I tried swithing the cable (so use another miniUSB) but that's not a problem. And WM5torage works, so...
Firewall could be wrong, but I don't have problems with other PDAs, so I think it is other software...
Anyway, yes, the sollution for me is BT. I use it since than, but until I realised that only USB is not working... I spent days with this, just because before the first succesful sync, AS only tells you: "use the AS from the CD..."
It should say: "Connected, but cannot sync. The problem COULD BE wrong AS version..."
So yeah, BT rox...
Hi there,
I'm using a TYTN (from SFR v1605).
It used to work well when I was on XP but since I've upgraded to Vista, in most cases the USB connection does not work.
As seen on some threads here, I have tried to tick / untick the "advanced network" option in the USB to PC settings panel: sometimes it works (rarely) but since few days I'm not able to synch through USB at all.
I don't know what to do.
I'm able to charge the TYTN, but I cannot see the panel displaying "USB connection..." on the TYTN.
Also the TYTN is recognized from Vista (I see it in the USB ports) and I cannot see any specific error message in Vista, just the mobile device center says the TYTN is not connected.
Any help would be appreciated.
Best Regards,

I had the same problem a couple of times. After a considerable amount of searching this forum, and other sites, I stumbled across a routine which fixed it for me.
With your TyTN connected by USB, on your PC/Notebook open up System Properties, Device Manager. You should find an entry, Portable Devices, showing the TyTn, It will probably have a yellow triangle with an asterix, showing that there is a problem. Right click on that and select Uninstall.
Then disconnect your TyTN and reconnect it. The PC/Notebook should then rebuild the USB driver, and everything should then sync.
HTC USB Sync with Vista
Thank you for your kind help.
I can see the HTC in the device manager, under mobile devices, but with no yellow triangle.
Anyway I've uninstalled it, and then disconnected and reconnected the TYTN.
It reinstalled the driver, but I still have no UBS Sync recognized on the TYTN.
Best Regards, Eric.

Two final suggestions from me.....
Firstly, ensure that you have the updated version of WMDC on your PC/Laptop. Mine is Version 6.1.6965.
Secondly, try deleting the existing partnership(s) on your TyTN. To do this, go to Start, Programs, ActiveSync. This will show you which partnerships are active. To delete them, go to Menu, Options, Delete.
When you reconnect your TyTN, it should set up a fresh partnership.
If this doesn't work, perhaps someone else out there could offer more advice.
Still not working
Hello Syd,
Thanks agaon for your kind help.
I've been travelling a lot these last weeks, sorry for the late answer.
I'm using the same version of WMDC as you.
I've also reset the partnerships.
It still does not work. Each time I reboot my phone it will loose the ability to establish the USB connexion with the PC. Fews days (sometimes weeks) after the connexion will work and I don't know why.
I'm sure this is linked with the phone, not the PC.
I've read somewhere in this forum it could be linked with the automatic time zone adjustment. I have the feeling it is linked with that, as my problems initially started while I was travelling in foreign countries.
I've seen somewhere that I should disable the automatic time zonbe adjustement, but I cannot find this option.
ALso, since I've created user defined alarm clocks, I have a very long list of alarms when I reboot the phone. I think some "events" are locking the phone, I just don't know how to fix it.
Maybe I should perform a full reboot, but I dislike doing it as I've installed many applications on my phone.
Thanks again for your help.
Best Regards, Erix.
Have you tried going into the usb to pc setting on the device (setting - system) and unticking advanced networking support?
advanced network
Yes, for sure I've tried this option.
Sometimes when I enable / disable this several times, it will eventually activate the USB connexion.
It used to be a workaround in the past, but it does work any longer.
A little bit like if there is a growing list of "events" which prevent the USB connexion from being activated. I really would like to understand what happens.
Are you using SP1 on Vista? If not, there is a USB update that you need to apply that fixes communication issues with USB devices and the host controller. I would HIGHLY recommend updating to SP1 ASAP. It makes Vista worth using.
If you are running SP1, I don't have any more thoughts other than replace the mini-USB cable. I actually had a bad one recently so it can happen.

No I don't use SP1. I let the system installing updates and fixes automatically, so I don't know whether that USB patch you mentioned has been installed or not. I'll have a look at it... I'll also install the SP1 ASAP.
Thanks for the tip.

Hello,
I have got a real annoying problem with my HD. When i hook it up to a PC via the usb cable the phone is not detect, and i have tested it out on 3 different laptops. I tried a soft reset, turning the phone on and off and my last resort was a hard reset but it still dosent work.
When connected to my laptop the phone can charge via usb, and when the screen is turned off and i plug in the USB cable the screen turns on so it does know it connected. Is there anything else i can try to get it working? or would it possible be a hardware fault on the phone?
The rom version installed is 1.56.405.1(43972) wwe, radio version 1.13.25.4, protocol version 52.62.25.34u. I baught the phone from mobiles.co.uk, has anyone had ay experience with sending there phone backs under warranty to get problems fixwd?
thanks

Do you have under 'Connections' settings tab (the three Windows Mobile settings tabs) a USB-PC Icon, if you do go into it and change the USB behaviour to/from advanced connection, if you have it !
That solved it for me, didn't like the advanced settting on mine.

It depends what OS you have on your PC is it XP or Vista
Sometimes the software isnt up to date so the phone charges but doesnt sync
Try downloading the latest drivers/software for your PC
This is active sync 4.5
By the way what are you trying to get done on active sync? are you trying to sync to outlook?
Or do you just want to look at your phone like a disk drive?
i have windows xp sp3. Active sync version is 4.5 as i did read previosly other version did casue problems with syncing.
I am trying to copy some music over to my memory card and some cabs so i can install some software. Only strange thing i last night the phone connected fine as a disk drive when i copied some music across, and since then i havent installed any new software or done any software changes on my laptop and my phone when i connected it today, firstly i tried to do it as a disk drive but it wasnt detected, so then tried active syn with the tick box selected but it didnt work so diabled it but it still wasnt working.

From what I have read the sync may have been messed up from the music or other files transferred sometimes it due to calender Im not sure what the prob is.
Have you tried deleting the connection in activesync? then reconnect
also your SD card may be causing it Try accessing your card on your PC, take the card out of your phone and use the adapter for the card
Have you also checked the options in Activsync on the phone are they all ok?
hi all, I also have the same problem with my HTC HD...
ROM version: 1.18.707.3 (23358) WWE
ROM Date: 12/10/08
Radio version: 1.09.25.14
Protocol version: 52.49a.25.26U
My problem is the same as what SST had described. All my PCs and laptops in my home and office are unable to detect my HD phone when I connect the USB cable on it. The HD screen only showed a battery charging icon while my PC/Laptop doesn't show any device connected. I am using Ms Win XP Pro SP3 on my laptop and Ms Vista Ultimate on my desktop. Active Sync 4.5 and Ms Mobile Center has been installed respectively on each computer. I have change to different type of mini USB cable as well.
Before this, everything was fine. This only happenend 2 days ago. I have tried to soft reset for few times and hard reset for twice. It can't solve my problem. I even tried to delete all the Windows-PC that is available on the HD, but still the same problem.
When I take out the mini SD card and try to read it using the SD adapter on my computer, it cannot detect anything on the media. This is very weird, but when I insert back into my HD, it works properly in the File Explorer and I can access all the files inside. I repeat a few times and the same thing happened.
Without ActiveSync, I can't even upgrade my ROM if there is a new update available.
I really have no idea what happened on my HD. Appreciate much if anyone can enlighten me on these 2 issues.
Thank you in advance!

Can you access USB when in Bootloader?
you probably know this but if you dont.........turn off phone, hold volume down button then turn phone on it should show tri colour screen
with serial written on bottom, plug your usb cable in hopefully it will say USB
atleast then you can flash
Try also deselecting faster connection on comm settings and you can also look here
hi ozmoran, the white portion screen only shown "serial" even I have already plugged in the USB cable... any idea?

this may sound a bit basic but are you using the usb cable that came in the box ?
I've found certain cables won't connect my phone to PC/laptop, they'll charge fine but no connection.
For some reason the phone seems picky about which cable it uses.

When in bootloader, disconnect usb and then re-connect it to phone. If bottom of bootloader doesn't change from 'Serial' to 'USB', you may find that your usb drivers need updating. Here is a guide to update drivers.
Also, before updating drivers, ensure that all correct settings in activesync have been selected i.e. 'allow usb connections' in connection settings.
Hi, Spartan. Thanks for your help.
I tried to update the USB device but the device manager doesn't show any USB-WinCE drivers at all. I guess my HTC HD USB port is faulty. Anyway how, my set is only few months old, I think I will sent it back to the dealer for a warranty claim.
Will update you guys again! Thanks!
quick update....in the end i gave up and took it to carphoneware house to get the problem sorted. They sent it off to their repair centres, who would have just flashed and updated the firmware. That didnt work so they sent it off to HTC who replaced the main board. so it looks like the mini usb connection was the source of the problem.

Im having a similar issue. USB connections were intermittent, i updated the windows drivers and everything was great. Now for some reason is stopped working, havnt been able to connect by USB at all. The device doesn't show up in device manager and the bootloader screen doesnt change to USB. it will charge tho and i can access the SD card from my card reader and it works fine in the device. Its quite frustrating tho, looks like my phones going back to orange
Just goes to show that similar problems don't necessarily have the same solution.
Thanks everyone for there input. Hopefully this will help others with 'similar' issues
