Active sync hard to pick up - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Since upgrading from a XDAii to a xda exec, I have been having huge problems getting active sync to connect to it.
It does, but only when it feels like it.
I'm using the latest version.
Is there anything I am doing wrong?

I have a wizard, and noticed since upgrading to the latest ROM that AS was a bit dodgy, ie sometimes it would connect and other times not...
What i found out was that if my laptop was NOT connected to the wireless network, then AS would NOT connect to my wizard. But when i was connected to a wireless network AS connected ok to my phone.
It appears that the PC you are connecting to, has to have an IP address, ie connected to a network, for AS to determine what IP address to give to the phone. Otherwise AS just keeps searching and not being able to connect.
I could be wrong but this is what i found out and works for me all the time now.

I don't think this is the probelm with mine.
I have a fixed IP address, on my PC and I am using cat 5 connection not wireless.

Internet via bluetooth?

Hi all
Firstly apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. Searching bluetooth returns ... too many results to sift through.
OK, I have this setup. I connect my laptop to the net using either the router OR network cable. My laptop is equipped with BT.
Is there any way to browse the net from my PDA, by establishing a BT connection from XDA2 to the Laptop?
I know it would be a doddle (I hope) if I were to purchase a wifi SD card, but if I can avoid the expense it would be great.
Thanks in advance.
One way would be through BlueTooth ActiveSync. As when in the cradle, when your PPC is connected to your PC through ActiveSync, internet connectivity is through the PC. I use it whenever I am in proximity to my BT laptop. Works well!
If you go to Options in ActiveSync, click the Rules tab, check Open ActiveSync when my mobile device connects. and have the Connection set to The Internet or Work depending how your network is set up. Then establish an ActiveSync connection (USB, serial, Bluetooth or IrDA) and it will allow you use Internet programs like PocketIE, Pocket Outlook, etc.[/b]
I thank you both for your very very quick response.
Yes, both methods work. YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I am one happy bunny.
Cheers
Going insane bluetooth activesync internet
I wish I could be so happy. Let me give a brief overview of the last 6 hours:
Installed bluetooth dongle on the work PC - eventually got it connecting to the XDA2.
I have now managed to get a connection with activesync which seems to be quite robust and synchronises ok.
I am now trying to get on the internet via my active sync bluetooth connection (and tearing my hair out)
My network management is now set to a new connection I have created call 'My Work' no modem set up with the proxy settings set to those required on my work LAN. No VPN set up.
Have set the pass through on the PC to work, internet and open activesync to enable and disable but can't get ti to connect. Please help!!!!!

maybe it's a firewall issue
try messing around with the ping program
on your pocketpc and see if you can ping the ip of your computer
and on it's gateway and dns
also make sure your dns settings on your pocketpc is set to the same as your pc
pocket ping
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=11879
Thanks for the advice. Bit stumped really:
My PC has a static IP address (10.130.16.84) I run pocket ping on the XDA and it says it's IP address is 192.168.55.101 the network is DHCP enabled. Neither of them can ping the other one (so there is no way I can connect to the proxy from my XDA2). Any ideas why my IP address isn't in our LAN range.
Just out of interest I can use a Dell X3i and connect to the network wirelessly no problem at all.
Further to baffle everyone - If i disconnect bluetooth and cradle it. I get the same Ip address but can connect to the internet no problem! So this would lead me to believe that all the connection and activesync settings are correct.
not sure here are some guides
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=449
Thanks for the help but the guides didn't fix the problem.
I eventually got it working (and a better bluetooth connection in the process) by downloading the slightly newer version of the XTND Blue Manager software http://www.windigosys.com/support.htm
I can now suft the internet on the XDA over activesync and syncrhonise files ok. Slightly slow but this I expect with what is basically a glorified serial port!
The only slight niggle I have now is that ActiveSync always reverts back to COM1 as the default port when I reboot my machine. Is there any way to stick it to com3?
it's blazing away at 700K/sec at least so the specs says

AS 4.0 kills wireless connection

Just got an XDA Exec, first time PPC user, moving from Palm.
Installed AS 4.0 - no problem
Synced - no problem
Wifi connection to my router - disconnected when Exec plugged in
When I plug in the Exec, a new ip address is created for my laptop in the
169.xx... range. (Local Area Connection , Device: Windows Mobile Device shows up in Network Connections)
Then when the sync starts, the firewall asks if activesync can communicate with another IP address in the 169.xxx.... range (I assume this is the Exec's address)
Sometime during this process, the wireless connection drops. When I unplug the exec, the wireless connection starts working, but drops out every few seconds, and then connects again.
I have to reboot to get a stable wifi connection.
Using Windows XP Pro, 802.11g, Kerio Firewall
Anyone with any ideas ?
Thanks
I have a simular problem, i have a toshiba Portege with built in WiFi, it also has toshiba software than when you "dock it" or plus in a RJ45 network cable, it will disconect the wireless, and vise versa, if you "un dock it" or unplug the RJ45 it will enable the wireless connection.
the has worked for years using activesync 3.8, 4.0 and 4.1 with my XDA2i and XDA2s.
I just got my XDA Exec and just pluged in the usb cable to sync, (activesync works fine) but my laptop then thinks i have a new 10mbs wired connection, so it disables my wireless lan, if i then disable the new conection made, the laptop reverts back to wireless but then it kills the activesync.
so agin Activesysc 4.1 did NOT do this the 2i and 2s but DOSE with the Exec
John
I would not care if it did not work only while the exec was plugged in as it is usually only for a short time while syncing. The big problem is that the wireless connection does not work properly after I unplug the exec. I need to reboot to get it to work again in a stable manner.
Have searched all over the place, have found no info, but did run into a post by a chap in Japan that seems to have a similar problem:
http://www.pocketpcjunkies.com/Uwe/...veSync-4-0-disables-wireless-networking-on-PC
I agree its not a bad problem of it disconecting whilst AS is syncing, but i leave mine in to charge.
at least my WiFi works fine as soon as i remove the USB cable. So i just plug the jasjar into a mains charger and activesync over bluetooth. Could you not do this as well as a tempory solution
John
I charge my Exec on mains so that's not a problem. I'm going to try solving this for a little while longer and then will have to try using bluetooth. Don't have a BT dongle for the laptop so I thought I would try to solve this first before going out to get one.
Lucky for me my laptop also has Bluetooth built in. I did on the XDA2i once manage to do activesync over wireless lan (the xda and laptop both connected to the same router/access point, even after doing some port forwarding i never got to work from other locations back to my laptop at home
cant remember how to set it up, but maybe this is a tempery fix for you rather than getting a BT dongle
Here's a followup
Tried the following things:
1) Disabled the wireless connection, and connected using an ethernet
cable.
Then plugged in Exec and synced. Wired connection held up fine throught
the sync. (When I plugged in the Exec, AS said that the exec was
already being synced to another pc called "Windows PC" so I should give
this pc a new name "Windows PC 2", to separate it out. However, it's
the same laptop! I guess this is because the wired connection gave my
laptop a different ip than the
wireless? - not sure about this). ANyway, no problem witht he
connectiong, before, during or after syncing/connecting the Exec.
2) With a freshly booted laptop and a working wi-fi connection Killed
the wcescomm and wcesmgr processes after syncing. Made no difference.
Wireless connection stil out. Had to reboot.
3) Finally, with a freshly rebooted laptop with a stable wireless
connection, I
- diabled the wireless adapter in Network Connections
- plugged in an ethernet cable, got a good connection
- plugged in the exec
- synced with the wired connection on
- checked that the wired connection was okay
- unplugged the ethernet cable
- enabled the wireless adapter
And no go, no stable connection to the router - until a reboot.
Then finally narrowed it down:
This may seem strange, but the problem with the wireless connection
only occurs if I am using WPA-PSK encryption (which I was using when I
started) on the wireless net. It does not happen if I use WEP or no
encryption. I have changed the security settings (and nothing else)
repeatedly and can recreate this at will.
Also, it has to be the AS 4.0 /Exec causing the problem as I have no
issues with connectivity until I connect the Exec. This too I have
repeatedly checked to ensure that I rule everything else out.
This issue is less to do with ActiveSync 4.X than the version of your Win Mobile OS. Are you running WM5 in your device because if so, it will do exactly that as you described.
For WM3 devices, you can have both AS (both V3.X and V4.X) and WiFI active concurrently. My guess on this is that the MSFT designers are trying to simplify the network side for multi-home devices (to borrow an old IP term here). If both network adaptors were allowed to be up as in the case of WM3, how does the device decide which is the preferred route when you can active sync to your PC via WiFI also ?
What happens to existing sessions when network routes are dynamically altered within the device, etc and so on?
This raises a whole host of issues which need to be thought through.
For that matter have you tried to configure your XP PC with a fixed LAN and WiFi connection and just try telling it to route intelligently by your LAN card instead of WiFi ?
I can confirm mrandery's findings. I had the same problem. Setting the wireless encryption to Web instead of WPA solved the problem for me as well.
This is bad. I can set my router to use WEP, but can not set my office's one, I'm not authorised to do so. It's default is WPA-TKIP.
as4 conflicts with Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG
I don't know if any of you realize this, plug in Exec to your note book does not kill your wireless connection, but it affect the whole network, everyone connect to the same router as you will also have connectivity issue, not just you alone.
Don't Microsoft have any solution for this?

Click to collapse
I know this now.
Plugged my exec into my laptop when at my brothers and it threw his PC off the network too. If anyone does find a solution to this it would be great.
No body can fix this??
My frind using Wizard and have the same issue.
See http://www.airscanner.com/blog/blog.php?blogid=0601040857
I tried this airfix, but it could not solve the issue.
Ditto same problem.
Hi guys ..
have just read through this post and it is exactly the same issue as a friend of mine.. i thought it was an isolated case however it would appear not .
If possible could all of you that have this issue please reply with the make / model of your WiFi Router and the Wifi card in your laptop .
other info like Router firmware may be good also if you know it ?!
maybe we will see a pattern ?
thanx all
There is a pattern -
- Intel wireless cards (2200 & 2915) & drivers
- Using WPA encryption (WEP and unencrypted not affected)
- it knocks off all wireless computers on the same network (not just the one with AS installed)
Router / PPC / laptop models seem to be unimportant.
Search google groups for a thread entitled " ActiveSync 4.1 kills wireless"
Wonder if this is ROM issue?
I have new (two weeks old) M5000 and only ever charge with usb.
I have d-link wireless router at home, and connected to it are two laptops and a desk top.
I can surf all night without have connection issues from all three PC devices, and from the M5000
All this with AS4 running to keep my sms messages synced up with Outlook (using Jeyo)

WiFi and GPRS frustration

I have a belkin router. It works well with several laptops.
I can connect to it with my JASJAR and get an IP address.
If I sync pop3 email it uses WIFI and works as expected.
If I sync journal bar it uses WIFI and works as expected.
However if I try to use internet explorer it alway tries to start a GPRS session and refuses to work through WIFI. Why??
Ive sent hours trying every setting I can find.
Anyone have any suggestions? :?:
Jon
At least your Wifi network doesn't crash as soon as u connect the JJ. Mine doesn't even get that far...
Anyone who can help???
Hmmm I wonder if this is something in the Telstra settings Cab.
Re those having problems all on Telstra?
Might try a hard re set and then manually build the settings.
Jon
Try de activating the phone. this allows you to use IE via your wireless router.
Tried that, thanks.
I just get the "Cannot Connect" message and if I dismiss it. Nothing!
However I can sync the weather without getting the "Cannot Connect" box. SO the WiFi is working, its just that Explorer can see it.
Im running the O2 UK firmware and it works fine (auto gives prefernce to the WiFi if I am in range, try loading on the genuine Imate firmware.
Jon
I know how you feel. I can't get wifi to work. Heck, I can't even use IE when synced to the computer via USB
Have you tried messing with the settings in start/settings/connections/connections?
I finally got it working.
You have to chose the "Telstra Internet" setting in Network Managment.
Its in Settings, Connections, Advanced, Select Networks, select "Telstra Internet".
I then did, Settings, Connections, Manage existing connections, Modem, and set it to "Auto"
It uses the WiFi first and then only uses GPRS if there is no WiFi.
Hope this helps someone else !
Jon
Can anyone help me with just getting my JJ connected to the wifi network without crashing the router?
Have you tried turning off any encryption etc and re booting the router.
Then try to connect at the most basic level?
Now I'm totally confused
I don't know what is going on!
I have finally managed to use IE via Activesync, using "Telstra Internet" as my My network connects to...
I tried again to hook up to the wifi network. The router is connected to my desktop via a physical cable, and my tablet pC is connected wirelessly (my JJ syncs with the tablet). I turned to tablet off, and then connected the JJ to the desktop wirelessly. On the desktop, I am no longer able to connect to the internet, but for some reason, the JJ is able to connect to the internet
But, even if I disconnect the JJ from the network, my desktop is unable to connect back to the internet until I reboot the router. What does this all mean????
I have the same issue with my MDA Pro! i done even have the sutp option in the modem settings. I can connect to my belkin router with encryption but no response when in IE!
Anyone else got any other suggestions?
I'm beginning to think that nobody has a solution to such connection problems. Is there any hope on the horizon? Any chance of something being sorted out by MS?
BTW, how well does BT syncing/internet connection work?
Ok frustration rising.
I can connect to my Belkin wireless router with no problems but I can only log onto the router and not browse the internet!
I have checked that the proxy is not configured.
Anyone got any ideas?
Nope

Treo 750 WM6 and Bluetooth PAN for Internet sharing

Hi, I've got a bluetooth adapter for my laptop. I've tried setting up my Treo 750 that I recently upgraded to Windows Mobile 6 to tether to my laptop for internet access. Looks like Bluetooth DUN is disabled in AT&T's WM6 rom. So I figured the PAN route seems better anyway since I think it doesn't drop the connection when a call comes in (although it takes more steps to initiate it every time, kind of a pain...). So it looked pretty easy to set up. I paired the devices, set up Internet Sharing on the Treo, and set my laptop to connect to my phone through PAN and all seems to connect fine, but I can't ever actually get on the internet. The phone shows connected, the laptop shows connected. The phone offers three options for internet sharing - AT&T, ICS, and proxy. AT&T or proxy both seem to connect, ICS does not. I noticed on my laptop that my IP address for the bluetooth PAN is 0.0.0.0. I don't know if that matters or not for this type of connection. Also, I've tried this with both the MS bluetooth stack and Toshiba bluetooth stack with the same results. All seems to pair and connect perfectly, I just get no IP address, no DNS servers, and (because of that, I think) no internet connection.
Also, if I try to do an ipconfig /renew I get "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 3 : The RPC server is unavailable."
My Local area connection 3 shows as "Bluetooth Personal Area Network".
DHCP shows as enabled, but ip, subnet, and dhcp servers show up as 0.0.0.0.
And you know what else, come to think of it is that a couple of times it complained about there being an IP address conflict on the network. I can't guarantee that it's related... at the time my wireless LAN was on and working correctly.
Solved!
Well, I'm sure nobody else is likely to have this same problem, but it so happens that my DHCP Client service wasn't running. I'd gotten some windows update that screwed up my laptop and was spitting out Generic Host Process Errors. If anyone cares, see here - http://motls.blogspot.com/2006/08/generic-host-process-for-win32.html
Excellent and thanks
I few days ago this problem happend with my Laptop, three day trying to find something... And almost change my phone, thanks

Can't connect to wifi at home?

Hey Guys....I'm new to this forum, and it's already been a great help to keep my wizard going!
I have a new problem, that I'm not sure how to approach...I'm using IPL/SPL 3.08 + 2.71 Radio on the T-Mobile version of 5. (I'm at&T tho...)
Whenever I try to wi-fi into my home network, it finds my network, and tries to connect, but never gets an IP address assigned to it. I know it's not a hardware issue, because I've connected to other networks in the past.
I'm pretty sure there's a configuration problem some where (I'm using WPA security, but I couldn't connect even when the wireless was wide open) but I don't know if the configuration problem is on my router or on my phone. Any ideas??
Thanks for the awesome forum!!
Can you get hold of a laptop or another wireless device and see if this connects to your kit at home?
If it does then you know you have a problem with the phone, if not then it's the wireless router.
Yeah, I have a couple other wireless devices that connect wirelessly to the network already + I connected my phone to my parent's wireless a few hours ago...so it's gotta be the router, but I don't know what I have to change. Any ideas?
I myself have the same problem, I can connect, and MAYBE look at one or two pages, my phone then loses the IP and never re-leases it from the router....I aswell have other wireless devices that connect fine(such as this laptop that im typing this on lol)
Phone specs:
Cingular 8125
TNT 6.1 Pro/with TouchFREE
IPL/SPL 2.26.olip
SIM Unlocked
I have the same problem. phone connects and gets an IP but as soon as i try to go on the Internet, it stops working and then eventually tries to dial a connection.
I wonder if a static IP address would work for these issues?
Could you update the phone's Wifi profile for your router to a static address instead of a DHCP address then configure the router not to lease the phone's IP address to any other device.
any idea where to set static IP/DHCP on the wizard running 5.1?
