Scanning for WIFI Spots. - Networking

Hi,
I have an MDA Vario and was wondering how I ca just scan for different hot spots in my area.
I've not used wifi before and would appreciate any help i can get
Thanks
MC_Bob

Download a free program called WiFiFoFum from this link:
http://www.aspecto-software.com/rw/applications/wififofum/
(You will also need .NET compact framework if you don't already have it, just go to Microsoft site)
It has a list view and a nice radar view + it gives you all the info available about each found network.
You can also try Hitchhiker:
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=4465 it can automatically configure your connections, and it's also free.

Thanks mate.
Would you know which framework i need to download?
Im running Windows XP x64
Thanks
MC_Bob

It's not for your desktop.
You need .NET Compact framework 2.0 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6b-356b-4a2c-857c-e62f50ae9a55&DisplayLang=en

Ya I just looked and already have it :S
Ill try on my fathers laptop
Thanks alot.
MC_Bob

Hitchiker kept crashing so Ill try the other program.
Not sure why it did, i tried resetting etc but nothing.

K,
Hitchhiker still doesnt work however, WifiFoFum does.
Can I connect to wifi devices with WifiFoFum ?
I cant seem to figure it out.
The error Hitchhiker has is :
Exceptioncode: 0x0000005
ExceptionAddress: 0x03f81884
Reading: 0x24000010
Thanks
Please help

Ah, That version you gave wasnt the latest.
Found the latest and installed it and works well.
Cant seem to pick much up though.
Thanks

can you up the latest version thanks

You can get the latest version of hitchhiker at
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/

I loaded the lastest version of Hitchiker and got constant errors. I had a heck of a time even getting my T-Mobile MDA to work and then removed the program. Not I can't connect to a network and all my network cards are missing?!
Can anyone out there help me get my device working again?
My advice is to stay far away from Hitchiker.

Blip on the radar?
Hmm. I installed WiFiFoFum on my MDA, because that radar screen looked amazing. However... it doesn't do anything? Windows is ringing off-the-hook with new networks found, but the radar shows nothing. ):
Any ideas?

Interesting too...

Could be that the signal strengths are wonkey. What do you see for the RSSI field in the list view? It should be a value between -100 and 0.

Hitchhiker 0.4b1 starts up OK in my Hermes (Voda 1605) and often starts to find APs, but generally crashes shortly after with an error or two (see below).
Seems a bit unstable at the moment but it looks like a darn fine app and will be excellent with a few of the bugs removed:

NETFRONT 3.3 NOW WORKS!!!

I've just tried the new preview version 1.02 and now it works!
As you know the previous version crashed as soon as you tried to surf the web: with this new version I was able to surf the internet without any problem.
where did you find it ?
sorry....double post
Look here
http://www.access.co.jp/english/index.html
thanx
It works well....but not support for wm2005, not soft keys and slow rendering, etc, ....Much work pending to do for netfront team
Yeah, I know but it's always better then Pocket IE!
The support for WM5 it's not explicitly declared but since it works I think they have added it but didn't update the product page.
It did not work on my Jasjar. By the way I installed on my SD Card and I still need to try it on the main memory.
The problem I faced is that when a webpage has opened and I click on any of the links on the first webpage that opened the program simply shuts itself down. Did any of you experience this as well.
Shall be obliged for your replies.
Kind Regards
not working for me - and I have a clean and solid installaiton. was on my SD card tho...
Here is a direct link for download. http://www.access.co.jp/nfppc/dl_v33e.html
Mike
All okay on the Exec in Coroporate mode except:
- the initial install suggested the install was not successful but when I did a soft reset the install completed
- when browsing this forum I couldn't reply to posts, the edit window did not work
Otherwise seems like a really good browser (not sure how you select "back" when in full screen mode though)
Confirmed working fine in BlueAngel WM5.
Will do some more tests thanks for the info
Now installed on my main memory and working though page rendering needs to be improved a lot as this is still not at par to what I used to get with version 3.2 on my old pda2k.
Also still cannot log in to my hotmail site.
This post is being written with version 3.3 on my Jasjar.
Regards
wokring over 3g not wifi
I have had netfront 3.3 working for the last month on my jasjar but it only works with a gprs/3g connection. It does not work over a wifi connection. Unless there has been an update to 3.3 that I am not aware of can anyone else confirm this behavior?

No, the new version 3.3 (102) works excellent over WiFi on my MDA pro!
Imho you should download the new version from the website and try again.
I got it crashing asap I try to open a page protected by username and password.
Hope next release will fix it.
Best regards
Installed it on my JJ on the SD Card.
Works OK, a little slow though. Will try it on main memory and see if it is faster (anybody have experience ?)
Cheers
hrb
EDIT: tried it with installation on main memory - practically no difference in speed - so: back to the SD Card !
@rpingar
Some password protected pages work though. For example I can log into my g-mail account and also my local ISP e-mail account. However when logging into hotmail netfront closes. Similarly some other password protected pages also show similar behaviour.

The same here!
The problem is pop-up related. Every time it tries to open a pop-up window, it crashes. The same happens when you try to access the advanced settings window.

works a treat! definately a must for those working in connectivity, networking etc and also those into warchalking (with a gps)
Yup, great bit of software. Can anyone recommend an indoor GPS device for use with WiFiFoFum when War-walking?
Cheers.
Massive install
Bloody hell!
The CAB file for WiFiFoFum is just a few hundred KB, but the installer for the .NET Compact Framework is 5MB!
You've got to *really* want this software to suffer that kinda hit to your storage, IMHO.
Is there any other free warwalking software that works well for WM5? I can store locations in TomTom without WiFiFoFum's radar display...
Thanks in advance
This version was great. Thanks

Hi SiliconS,
I stored NetFramework and WiFiFoFum in my SD Card. It runs great, a little slow to start up but saves you the internal memory.
Plus from what I read, most new free warwalking software needs NetFramework 2. So there is no escaping it. Sorry.
If you want to try HitchHiker: http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/ feel free, but the last time I tried it on my EXEC, it did not work.

Thanks for the reply, Christian.
Maybe I'll try WiFiFoFum if it installs OK to the SD card. I was just shocked at how much MS bloat was necessary to get it working. Even installing the .NET 'Compact' Framework via my PC required a 24MB download and a 59MB installed size. Seems crazy to me, but I guess it's necessary for something.
Just a pity that WiFiFoFum requires the complete .NET framework and can't just cherry-pick certain libraries. I'm not a coder so I don't understand the reasons, but I'm sure the developers don't choose this situation happily.
but where is the advantage compared to the version before, that makes it worth installing the huge framework-stuff...?
the 0.3.3-version works quiet good on my mda pro

So, you mean to say that the previous version worked well with the UNIVERSAL, so we don't need to install NetFramework 2? Does the old version of WiFiFoFum have Windows Mobile 5 support?

Previous version works on Universal, but you can't see all the screen in landscape mode. Since I use it once-in-a-blue-moon, I'm not worried by switching to portrait mode. But the loss of 5MB of main storage makes the latest version with .NET v.2 a non-starter!

hermes and network tools

Hi,
I am a new Hermes owner and I am a networker.
So I am loking for anything related to network on Hermes to play with
unfortunately I am very confused with so many non-working applications for PPC. This is my first PPC device and I still couldn't go further then seeing my IP address on the device.
Of courser I can use it for any network application but I want to sniff, analyze, collect info...
So far, I've heard the following applications:
- VxSniffer
- PhatNet and Phatnet Pro
- Hitchhiker
- Commview wifi for PPC
- Windows Mobile Network Analyzer PowerToy for WM5
- Pocket Warrior
- CENiffer 3.0
- wififofum
- wifiknife
VxSniffer:
didn't work on my Hermes - don't know why but it says that it can't load driver.
it only worked once but then after a reset it gave the same error.
do you know the cause ?
PhatNet Pro:
didn't also work. but it never works. VxSniffer worked at least once.
Windows Mobile Network Analyzer PowerToy for WM5:
It works but really does nothing other than giving me obvious information.
Wifiknife and Wififofum aren't really doing anything sensible. Maybe just for fun.
I didn't try CommView, Pocket Warrior, CENiffer, Hitchhiker yet. But I really have no hope.
I've read the following article :
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1226&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
But it gave me no hope...
So I am still looking for software.
Which one really works on Hermes and really is useful ?
How do you use VxSniffer ? (I ask this because it was the only one that seemed like it would work and I see some people on this forum talking about it)
Does hitchiker or commview work ?
Please help me
????????
Well erm..... what is it you want to do?
Hitchhiker works if you want to connect to a network. Wififofum that you say does nothing sensible gives you info about networks in the area. That is what these sort of apps. are designed for. If you want more then you have to be more specific in stating your purpose.
At random I might suggest something like logmein as a network tool to control your PC, but I live in fear that you will say that's not what I'm looking for it does nothing sensible!!
You ask for apps that really are useful - and that's the point, useful for what?
More detail please?
Mike
ok; detail...
I am looking for network analyzing, packet capturing, sniffing tools.
also talking about wifi, wep key sniffing would be nice.
also, I am looking for an emule/edonkey client for PPC.
I have mobiphant but a better client (if exists) would be nice.
btw, what information do you get from wififofum (I mean information that standart builtin wlan tool does not supply) ?
logmein is a pc controlling software as far as I know from my readings throughout the forum. I need this kind of application but my limitation is that I can only use remote desktop protocol. (formy work pc)
now, you'll say "use the built in TSC" but it is not usefull with 320x240 screen size. So I tried Nyditot to achieve a higher screen resolution. Then it made my stylus unuseful (screen alignment problem)
you see, there are too many problems that I need to solve with my Hermes.
emule/edonkey, wep key snifers - get a life!!
Come on ...
Want to use your HERMES as a hacking tool?
Forget it ...
why not ?
hey guys, why not ?
I don't understand you.
there are these applications...
mobiphant is a working emule client. I used it and I even downloaded someyhing on the go.
I just couldn't find the right sniffing application.
commview and hitchhiker should be working. I just don't know how to install and use these.
if phatnet, commview, hitchhiker, vxsniffer, and other tools are written. then there is a demand. and also there is possibility.
so why not we don't use it ?
I don't understand why you are negative about this.
I think there is negativity because the combination of applications you seem interested in suggests that you want to drive up to someones house or perhaps detect the neighbours network, crack their wep key, and start downloading their files.
Or maybe you have just given the wrong impression??
Mike
I think it's wrong impression.
I am a network expert in a serious network and telco company.
I have high bandwidth internet access both at work and at home.
I don't need to crack my neighbour's wep key.
It's just that I love network tools and now that I have a new toy which can access wifi, I want to play with it.
I need network sniffer to troubleshoot my voip applications on the hermes.
I need the emule client to download ANYTHING from e2dk networks while I am connected with my hermes.
there is no evil idea. I just want to use tools that are available. I am not familiar with this pocket pc OS (I was a PalmOS user for 6 years) and I need help.
besides, if I need to hack my neighbour's network I could use my laptop with many available tools.
That seems fair comment to me.
Unfortunately not being an expert in this area, we'll have to wait for replies from those who are.
Mike
I've found another one: ministumbler
it's available at :
http://www.stumbler.net
and
http://www.wardriving.pl/new.php?nr=193
it seem like a new application however, it didn't work...
Maybe I am doing something wrong.
Should I enable wifi card or disable it before using such applications ?
as soon as I enable my wifi card it connects to my wifi network.
maybe this interrupts the sniffer application ???
I use WiFi Companion, so you can chack that out if it suites you
Here is the link: http://www.jiwire.com/socket-wifi-companion-product-review-1.htm
wifi companion seems like a nice application. should I install it to devşce or the storage card ?
any special instrucions ?
You can install it on storage card, it works fine from there..
No special instruction needed for network experts..
here is what i have on my Hermes.
btcrawler - bluetooth snarfing/scanning tool (not really that useful but fun none the less)
mtoken - serial/telnet/ssh client
pocket tty - ppc version of putty
sniffi - wireless scanning tool (btw ministumbler doesnt work on the hermes)
wififofum2 - wireless (not sure which one i like yet)
vxipconfig - release renew etc..
vxutil - ping/traceroute/finger/nslookup etc...
Others
CE Sniffer v3.1 - packet capture (like ethereal, i have used it on my old ppc havent installed it on hermes yet)
vxSNMP - read/write snmp (havent installed it)
vxSniffer - packet capture (havent installed it, but Cambridge software generally is very good)
WEP cracking - havent seen anything for ppc running windows. Generally you need linux on a IPAQ or similar.
thank you
I will try these...
However, I have a very generic problem:
when I install something related to wifi adapter, I generally can't run it.
all of the apps I tried say that :
"can't load driver"
"driver not loaded"
"driver not available"
I got these for most of the apps. Now I try the Socket Wi-fi Companion as suggested and I get a similar error:
"one or more components of WLAN tools were not found, or there are too few resources available to start the program. please verify proper installation of WLAN tools and try again"
I tried several times and the result is same.
My wifi is working. I am connected to my home wifi router now.
So what is the problem ?
Should I start these apps when my wifi is on or off ?
should I run them when I'm connected to a wlan or not ?
maybe there is a conflicting application I think but the only continuous running app is Wisbar Advanced.
What do you suggest ?
most of the wifi apps were written a while ago and dont contain drivers for the wifi in the hermes. A good example is ministumbler, it has not been updated for years.
You dont really need a wifi scanner to do more then tell you a network exists, if it is secured, what channel, power of the network, and if your lucky what brand of AP it is. sniffi and wififofum2 both do this and have gps tagging too.
There are plenty others out there though.
senergy,
I understand you but I can't run any of the apps that you (and others) report working.
I have a problem using these drivers on my hermes. what could it be ?
anyone using any of these sniffing applications successfully on Hermes ?
which vxsniffer version works on Hermes ?
vxSniffer.hpcPro_arm.CAB
vxSniffer.hpcPro_I486.CAB
vxSniffer.hpcPro_mips.CAB
vxSniffer.hpcPro_sh3.CAB
vxSniffer.hpcPro_sh4.CAB
vxSniffer.ppc3_arm.CAB
vxSniffer.ppc3_mips.CAB
vxSniffer.ppc3_sh3.CAB
I still can't get further than "cannot load driver"
I'd go for the PPC ARM cab

I liked Windows Live Search a lot, but mainly because it just plain worked. The java midlet version of GMM was instable if it would even work at all. Google just works better. It also allows you to look up contacts and use them in your searches. Windows Live Search doesn't have that option. I'm sure future versions of Windows Live Search will up the ante and Google will, in turn, raise the bar even higher. Yay for competition.
FYI, I'm also running the SA 1.35 ROM and it installed without any issues. I just went to www.google.com/gmm and opened/ran the installer from there.

archive corrupted!
Install and all worked fine for me this morning. Maybe save it somewhere first... then try the install? (That's the method that worked for me.)
worked for me too
what about google talk for mobile ???
download the cab on ur PC, active sync and move it to your phone. Their OTA download is messed up.
I tried it a couple times and noticed the file sizes were different. the cab file should be approx 607k. I kept getting 300k when I was getting it over the air directly to my phone.
I went to www.google.com/gmm on my pc, got the wm5 version cab, put it on my phone and installed from my phone just fine.
It doesn't have hybrid map view (streets on the aerial pictures) which Live search has. Actually, live search feels a bit better to me still.
works fine copying the cab over for me on the Vario II, pretty neat.

I cant get my Bluetooth GPS to work. After i hit track with GPS, it errors out and brings up some help file and talks about editing settings in the control panel if you have a BT gps, but i have no idea what its talking about.
what the heck. There's no detail at all for Japan, although google maps has the detail and so does the midlet version.
The midlet, however, can't do searches in Japanese which is why I was glad to try out this new thing.
wow, what a great app. i already used the java midlet before but that didn't work so good. this one does! even the satelite view is quite quick via umts!

Wifi-Sniffer for Hermes/Tytn with WM6 ?

Hi everybody,
trying to find a working app that is able to sniff tcp packets on my wlan (yes, only for learning purposes! for those who suspect otherwise...)
I was trying to install vxsniffer earlier - to no avail. tried both ppc arm cabs which come in the zip file.
It keeps telling me it can't load the driver (even after soft reset & switching off the device).
I came across cesniffer, but found no way to download it anywhere...
The other one I found was phatnet pro - which seems to be not developed any more by the developer...
Maybe, somebody can point me into a direction on where to obtain a working sniffer for my hermes running WM6?
It would be ideal, if it would be able to output into ethereal format, for later analysis.
You guys can also PM me, if you wish to give some advice..
Help would be highly appreciated,
regards,
trial
Hi,
I got vx sniffer working on WM5. I think I had to remove one or two installed apps, perhaps the antivirus to avoid conflicts.
Take a look at airscanner also.
Be aware that these sniffers will not be promiscuous as the ti wlan driver does not support promiscuous packet collection.
regards,
chris
hey chris,
thx for your quick reply! which version of vxsniffer did you use (and which cab)?
installed airscanner earlier - but it seems to me, that i need to buy their external network card also - so it seems to be impossible to use the tytns/hermes built in wifi - or am i misunderstanding something here?
regards,
trial
