I read in a pamphlet that Cingular has that I cannot use any VoIP things with my unlimited data plan. What are they going to do with the unlimited data plan? Block ports that Skype uses?
Have you tried it yet?
If Cingular does start blocking ports then I'm sure skype will figure a workaround.
I've been able to get it to work with my data plan with cingular. not well though..don't know if the data rate is fast enough to handle skype...
even when on wifi and oc it doesn't run extreme great
@kyphur: I haven't tried it yet, I don't even have the phone or PDA package yet. I'm asking because I just wanted to know what to expect.
@guyver2077: Is your data plan unlimited? I didn't expect Skype to work well at all because the CPU is so low. I read up on that already though.
I have the MDA and overclocked it to 240 and tried Skype over WIFI and it worked pretty well. An occasional pause but not bad at all for being free.
I use skype on my wizard over wifi clocked at 252 and it works perfectly. Also about using VOIP on cingular's network was OK last week, which pamphlet did u read it on?
The Wireless Report
And heres the same article just reworded EngadgetMobile
The pamphlet was one I nabbed from a Cingular store. It was about the different data plans that they offered. When you open it all the way, you see a massive collection CYA text about limitations and stuff like that. I read that unlimited data plans cannot be used for VoIP, server like stuff (installing Apache on your Pocket PC), etc...
I plan on using it for VoIP anyway because I'll be paying $40 a month for the data plan alone. I just wanted to know if that Cingular has gone so far as actually blocking specific ports to prevent people from doing so.
No they haven't. Cuz as that article states, data is data and it would take a lot to block a voip service.
Also will VOIP run clear enough on edge? I'm waiting till i get a UMTS device to get the unlimited data plan.
If they state no VOIP and monitor the traffic on your plan and see VOIP traffic they have the option to cancel your data plan, but thats about all they can do.

I've been thinking about switching from Tmobile to Cingular to benefit from their UMTS network.
Since I already have a TyTN I figured I would order a 3125 and get their Unlimited Smartphone Connect Plan.
I was wondering if this would work with the TyTN and what the settings are.
From what I've been reading online it seems that the Smartphone plan uses Cingular's wap proxy. I was wondering if this would affect the 3G performance.
I wouldn't use the TyTN for tethering (my monthly usage runs around 200-250MB, mostly mail and RSS).
Smartphone Connect Plan
I have the TyTn and have added the Cingular Extended Roms and all is working well... You can add the Cingular Wap settings via cab and depending on the Rom that you have installed, you may or may not have issues with the Express Mail settings and Phone Keypad...
Took me several days to figure out the right combination of Rom and Extended Roms, but I am happy at the moment...
debonairone
I thought I could manually configured the connection... I already have 2 mail accounts setup (one is my work Exchange (push) the other is my personal pop)... don't care much about XpressMail.
I'm running WM6 latest rom.
-If you need XpressMail, go with the SmartPhone connect.
-If you want 200 text messages/month, go with the MediaMax 200 Bundle
Both of those are $19.99, and give you unlimited internet
If you need VPN or isp.cingular, you'll have to get the more expensive PDA connect (or laptop connect) plans.
3G speed is not much worse on wap.cingular if it's worse at all. It's not difficult to setup the data accounts. There are actually very good tutorials on Cingular's website in the help section.
Thanks!
I have no use for the VPN at this point. Xpress mail may be a nice addition since right now I am pulling mail from my personal pop every 30min. Having the push option on this account as well would be nice.
I was just worries that the Smartphone connect plan would not work on a TyTN and that the wap proxy would make things slower (or prevent access to certain pages) but it looks like I'm getting a much cheaper deal yet retain pretty much all the functions I need!
Hi, I have the smartphone connect plan and am running it on my 8525. I bought the phone off eBay new in December and didn't want to get locked into a data contract for 2 years since my contract was up, so I bought the device outright and added this data plan.
I got the smartphone connect unlimited plan. I have been using this since then with good results. On my Cingular account section it actually shows that I have the 8525.
I am actually using it right now as a wireless modem. I have checked the speed and it's around 750 to 1mb overall. I believe it is using the wap.cingular and have full function. I have it pushing my email through my works exchange server and also use it for my personal msn account.
I am on the Cingular MediaNet plan....$19.99 works great here. One thing I would like to point out is that if you have t-mobile...you can just get the $4.99 t-zone..and you can surf all you want and checking emails. Too bad T-mobile's data speed is slow otherwise I would had kept my service.
wow thanks for all the tips! I didn't realize I could get the much cheaper tmobile plan as well.... i'm currently paying $30/month for unlimited data plus wifi which I never use anyways...
In any case from speaking with a few people i think the media max 200 seems like the smartest options as it offers unlimited data plus some text messages and i could use their media (TV) features if needed...
I just gotta figure out how to get the plan since it doesn't seem available to purchase with the Cingular 3125.
You can just add the features/plans you want online after you sign up for Cingular billing at the website.
I used to use T-Mobile as well, and I thought the $4.99 plan only gave you port 80 (http)? I was on an old $19.99/month plan which was unlimited GPRS/EDGE with no Hotspot, which I don't see as an option anymore.
I'm not sure, but i want to ask if is anyone experiencing some GPRS problems. I can connect to inet w/o probs, i can browse web...., but i cannot connect to IRC(using wmirc or pirc), ICQ or MSN(im+435) or i have troubles with ftp(resco I tried passive and active mode) Am I tho only one or something similar is happenig to others? I'm using HTC-Uni(latest WM6 build 17....)
IRC is blocked as far as i know, unless you use wnw+ or wnw-max. IM apps arent allowed just as much as VoIP over webnwalk.
i use wnw, on contract dont know if its wnw+. it worked a week ago?suddenly stopped. ****ing t-mobil.(maybe because they had to pay £200 for inconvenience)will call them
ive heard a few reports of this today, seems tmob might be cracking down on it??
I havent been able to use irc / stream music etc.... since getting my contract (about 3 weeks ago)
i cannot use ftp as well, just thinking if those bastards didnt start blocking all ports except for 21, 80, IMAP, SMTP, POP3 :-( if yes i'll chec my contract and will take some legal actions ( I love compensation for inconvinience)
Stuck
Hello everyone, ive been trying to follow these T-mobile UK GPRS problems, related post because im in the same boat. My msn messenger wont work and ive given up, (use webmessenger: works fine though). Yahoo messenger will not allow me to make pc 2 pc call any more but works for chatting.
However strange, i am begining to suspect T-mobile UK as they are obliged to do, are cracking down on VOIP / IRC protocols.
Also need to mention that skype and msn messenger works fine from my SPV M3100 so its does confuse me a bit.
Now im wondering should i delete this post A.S.A.P before some t-mobile network engineer see's it and gets to work ? Im only a student(as good as pensioner: financially) who lives on his own, so wNw MAX is mostly out of the way, might need to get a broadband connection
Don't delete the post, they probably wouldn't care what you say. (A t-mobile dude was telling me to flash a different rom to my xda, so it would be fully compatible with them!)
Unfortuneatly on t-mobile they do not allow IM services on their web 'n' walk internet I think you'd have to find a wifi point.
i read fair usage policy, its not alloved for w'n'w but for w'n'w plus is no mention of IM. i sent them a letter via their web, so i'm awaiting answer

so if your using skype, msn,etc on the basic WnW and they block that, no point in complaning as you wont have a leg to stand on
i'm on wnw+ so im pissed off. i sesnt them a mail on sund. i do not use skype as viop client only for IM. but i cannot use im+(icq...), mchat, msn messenger, irc. pinkies in callcenter are stupid, they told me that they dont provide supp for 3rd party apps (except the **** in tmo's rom - and U must have extrom installed-so no way to have icon for msn). they sent me back nice letter that they recieved my complain and i will get ans within 5working days. its friday 2:11am and still nothing. BTW IM was reason for wnw2wnw+ upgrade. they are ****ing bastards.
Go to connection settings and clear the checkbox beside "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet"
I have a T-Mobile Wing running Open Touch.
Everything on my phone is set... except for internet.
What are my available options for internet plans for my wing?
I want unlimited internet usage and unlimited text.
What is available and what is the best/cheapest plan to get so I can use it for Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Maps, Weather, etc.??
I just have unlimited text and unlimited data. I figured that's what every wing user had.
So, that's $14.99 for Unlimited text and $19.99 for Unlimited data..
Is there any other option? Or is this the only way to go..
Can I use the $5.99 T-Zones plan for internet?

You can but don't expect it to be there when you need it. My daughter does the 5.99 and I on average 2 times a month I get asked to see if I can figure out why she can't go to Myspace in Opera Mini. It is usually her fault changing a setting but still I do expect the day that the loophole will be closed. As for myself I have unlimited text and data. I just like to use my phone as I want when I want. As a matter of fact today my ISP (Comcast) was having difficulties with the ambient temps around here so web was slow or not loading. So I used my phone's ICS to browse the forum.
it's in my signature
Thanks for the input..
So the Unlimited data is the best thing to do, but the $19.99 hurts, haha.
Say I get the T-Zones $5.99, once I get that activated, will my internet explorer, weather, google maps, etc work automatically?
Or do I have to change some settings and download some cabs before they work?
Can someone shed some light on what steps I have to take to get T-Zones internet to work my internet explorer, google maps, etc. after I activate it?
Unlimited will require no configuration changes. "If" you already have T-Mobile configurations present.
T-Zones will not work right away the proxy configurations are listed all over the forum and can be found via google. There is a decent amount of configuration edits. It can be tedious or work right the first try all a matter of how well you follow the directions and if the directions you find do indeed work.
Good Luck!
p.s. If you plan on using palringo (all in 1 IM) ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) the proxy did not work for me. Can't say that is true with everyone.
I just tried the proxy settings 2 nights ago with a friends sim card on my Wing just to show him what the benefits are of paying for proper service and not.
My opinion is get the Full Service it just works.
Thanks for your response.. really helpful.
I'm going to try the T-Zones for a while, if I hate it, then I'm going with the Unlimited Data Plan...
I have 1,000 texts for 8.99? and unlimited internet for 19.99. Get the internet, it's connected 24/7, I get all my emails, weather, browsing the web, downloads,

Yeah, I'm too cheap for that too, but now I'm starting to rethink the 5.99 tzones though. Although, wi/fi works fine and anytime I need it, I can usually find a hotspot.
Because of work, I HAVE to have unlimited internet and the worldclass service, so that I can use my phone and internet from any country... If I wasn't always traveling on a monthly basis.
I got the Tzones set up the proxy like in the tutorial loaded up a few pages fine then i had to go to work...a couple hours later tried it again and this is the message that I get on internet explorer now...
"Error:request content '(website here)' cannot be accessed. You do not have access to the site."
wifi is fine for me it saves me 20 dollars a month...lol
I had t-zones for a while on my wing, one day it stopped working and couldn't get it to work for after a few days, I had to call t-mobile and asked what happened. They told me t-zones is for regular cells, not smartphones. I had to go with unlimited data.

you goofed by not just telling them that you swap your sim out with another smaller phone once in a while that you DO use t-zones with. If they ask you why, just tell them it's none of their business Or if you are feeling nice then say that you're 2nd phone is for times when you want to use your smaller Samsung T-809 or whatever to keep in your pocket when you're out... like clubs, ect. The wing is not pocket friendly so that's what I actually do sometimes.
Bottom line is, they have no business canceling your t-zones without your permission.
Im on a $2.99 offer for Unlimited T-Zones and Unlimited Picture Messages
I use the T-Mo Proxy =]
With the economy getting worse I'm trying to tighten my belt as best as I can. Right now I'm paying a lot to talk on my HTC Wizard using T-Mobile. One idea that popped in my head was to just get unlimited internet access to my phone and then use Skype to talk all I want, given that I pay for Skypes service to make calls to landlines. Course another beauty in this is that I can cancel my home phone number as well.
Here's my questions.
#1 Are there plans to pay for only unlimited internet access, doesn't have to be T-Mobile it just needs to work with my Wizard.
#2 Can signal quality really cause a lot of trouble with Skype?
#3 Does Skype work flawless on my Wizard, and if not explain?
If someone already does this can they give further input about this?
(bit late to reply maybe)
I tried skype in my wizard with T-Mobile.
It works but the processor is a bit slow for skype.
Sometimes I even had to reset the phone...
So, it's not an ideal solution, but it does work.
(for me at least )
skype is free with unlim inet
apart from if you call to real phone numbers
rather then to other computers using skype
if you use skypeout which is what skype call it when you
call a normal phone from skype rather then a skype user
they charge you and to be able to do so at all you
need a skype out account
Isn't there alternatives to using Skype software? The Wizard is buggy is general.
I'm also curious about this for my HTC Diamond.
Here is my solution, it's not free but I think it's resonable! I am using Kaiser with software called AGEPhone mobile 2, and I have a 3G connection with 384k speed, which cost 9,8 euro/month, with a voipstunt account, every deposit like 10 euros, I get 120 days free call to the landline(Finland), and 1 cent/min. to call China from Finland. I am pretty satisfy with the sound quality.
Unlimited Talk time
Try the new data network: zero1mobile. Unlimited data for $70 / month.

Hey everyone. Hoping someone can help me with this. I'm trying to find a way to use my truly unlimited phone data plan. All of the data plans available that I have access to are capped. My phone plan offers truly unlimited data without any overage, cap, or throttle so I'd like to find a way to do this if possible.
I've searched the forums, but everyone seems pretty focused around needing to use the phone feature on the device. I have no need for that and plan on using google voice and skype for my phone features, I really just want to be sure I don't hit any limits with my data usage.
Any ideas?
If your phone has android you can enable wifi tethering so your phone creates a wifi access point. You can connect then with your Nexus 7 to it and use the data plan of your phone.
Thanks for the tip InvaderX. I do have android, however I'm looking for a replacement to my phone rather than carrying two devices. Also, as soon as I add tethering to my plan I will get a throttled data plan at 5gb. I am aware of how to get aroud this requirement, but really don't feel like carrying two devices.
Well I don't know anything about the plan and how the restriction works.
You can try to use a VPN or fake the user agent string. If it doesn't work they detect the tablet by checking somehow the capability to call / GSM - in this case you can't do much.
