SPB Weather Data Use - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I was travelling internationally and got hit with 2MB/day roaming charges. I have mail set to download only the first 4K of emails and this is pretty small. The only thing that seems like it could account for it is SPB Weather, which, now that I look, is downloading over 100K every time it connects, which was set for hourly updates. I had read that a 5 day forecase was only 400 bytes, but instead it is taking 30 times that for a 7 day forecast.
Has anyone noticed an excessive data use from SPB weather?

i have it set to manual update, and auto when sync'd
that way i can make sure it doesnt use too much!

Email doesn't check every 60 minutes as its supposed to

I had this problem with my previous Pocket PC phones but never found a fix for it. My inbox (aka Messaging) is set to 'Connect and check for messages every 60 minutes'. Unfortunately, it does not check every hour but maybe once every few hours.
I am using SPB Pocket Plus and set the Messaging to exept from closing - so the Messaging is always up and running.
Anyone have some ideas or fix to this? My old Treo 600 was extremely reliable when it came to checking for emails every hour.
Also, does anyone know if I can change the interval from 60 minutes to 90 instead?
Thanks.
I 've noticed that too. The fact is, that if you have more then one accounts in the messaging, and you always do in fact, since ActiveSnc and SMS is always there. The software only checks email in certain interval when the appropriate account is active. So, for exmple if you have sent SMS to someone and this profile is active when you close or minimize Messaging, it will NOT check another email account

Pop3 data use

I'm still trying to figure out why I use so much more data than I did with the Treo. I installed SPB GPRS monitor, and found that my T-Mobile MDA uses *way* too much data checking email. I have it set to download 4K maximum. Downloading two messages generally uses 50K and sometimes 100K. The record is 200K, when there were about 10 messages, which should have taken 40K.
Uploads are uniform at about 1K or 2K, all the data flow is downloads.
I'm not sure why, but my current theory is that if there are messages that are on the server that have been deleted from inbox but not deleted from the server, the entire 4K is downloaded for each of these messages, but then doesn't appear because once downloaded Inbox realizes these messages are in the deleted folder. But I'm not sure that is the reason and am still testing.
I wish snappermail was available for WM5.
A month of monitoring
I used SPB GPRS Monitor to keep track of the data use on my wizard. I have my device set to download a maximum of 4K. The results are quite peculiar. First, even when the server is empty, there is a variable amount of data used, ranging from 5K to 50K. Second, when there are messages that are already downloaded, they are apparently downloaded again, because even with no new downloads, data use is high and proportional to the number of messages on the server. Third, I'm averaging 50K of data use per message downloaded. Remember that I'm only getting 4K of the message and that feature works, in the sense that the message is truncated. Fourth, it is not downloading very large messages; it is number, not the size, of messages on the server that seems to determine data use.
I've turned off messaging (tmail) and am now experimenting with qmail. It is too early to tell for sure but it appears to be a solution -- data use appears much more moderate (after 24 hours of testing, however).
This is pretty important for those of us who roam overseas.

Push without Exchange?

I was wondering if there was a way to push mail without the use of Exchange.
Everything I have seen leads to no, but if I have noticed one thing around here, is that you folks don't seem to like NO very often... kinda like my wife.
www.emoze.com
I use it and it is close to perfect for me.
It's free, simple, installs on your Desktop PC and a client on your TYTN. I programed it to push every 10 minutes - more than enough for me.
Thanks...
Have to wait for the VISTA version (and probably office 2007 as well)

There are currently problems with push & Kerio. I have submitted a ticket before
Christmas and the bug is being looked into. Hopefully fixed in their next release.
If you have Cingular you can get Xpressmail Personal Edition.
is there anyone who knows if it is possible to change the name from Emoze to something else? (account name)
pb with emoze is you have to have PC connected all the time, otherwise no email is pushed forward ... just my 2 cents ...
Sure you do. Your PC is your server so it has to be on all the time. What is the problem with that?
You could just use a free www.mail2web.com exchange account. If you want to change the outgoing email address all you pay is $1.99. I went from 1and1.com exchange to there service and its about the same minus customer service.

I thought you can set your pop3 email to check it a certain interval in minutes...like..1, 2, 3 miniutes, etc...
I have it set up on mine...so it does log into your pop3 server...and it is free with no additional software. I forgot where to go and set the time interval.
Wratran,
I forgot where to go and set the time interval.

If memory serves correctly, it is in the "Accounts" tab of the program.
Yep its in accounts then follow the setup thing until you get to servre information and then click on the options button
I wish there was a way to make it check every day though instead of the max being every hour.
Cheers
Beware Emoze...if you leave the default settings you might end up draining your battery if you're constantly in a 3G area. My wife's 8525 was like this...it checked almost constantly and the 3G use would drain the unit to half battery about 3 hours after being unplugged from the charger. Thankfully she's on unlimited data so I don't have to worry about the bill .
Install her EMOZE on a memory card instead of the main memory. This will make a difference and also it won't drain the memory. Also have her install the Band Switch program and stay on GSM most of the time. If she requires large downloads she can switch to UMTS for a limited time.

+1
that is what I usually do, except I don't use emoze but the trick is worth been mentionned.
You can use OpenPush by ivorh, see this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279369
on most of the latest ROM's, the messaging client will check at least every 5 mins. Im on Black 2.5 and I am someone that goes back and forth with people with Sidekicks and its enough for me to check every 5 mins vs. spending money and setting up new accounts.
Go Mail messanger > Options> highlight and select the account you want to change >Next till you see advanced settings> under automatic send receive select interval.
I stayed on WM5 til this was available on WM6. Why pay for push?

Weather report without gprs

Hi guys!
First official post!;-)
I was wondering, and looking around on the board, but didn't find anything.
Since GPRS and other mobile internet is expense in Belgium, isn't there an application that loads the weather report for the next week, everytime you sync your Touch Dual (or whatever HTC...) to your PC/Laptop. That way, you wouldn't have to use GPRS
In my case it would drastically lower my gprs cost(since I sync every day!), and still have the eye candy
Grtz & thx very much!
also interested in this!
anyone with ideas?
spb weather is decent. i used to get a 5 day forcast from the bbc website everytime i synced.
yahoo go 2.0
yep
Yep SPB Weather i use to, and onesly is prety 95% acurate. I m for SPB.

Synchronizing with >3000 appointments and contacts takes forever

hi,
i have a colleague who also has a touch hd and over 3000 contacts and appointments in his outlook.
the synchronizing takes forever and doesnt even come to the end after several hours. he left the hd over night and the next morning it wasnt finished.
does anybody have that much contacts or appointments?
it think it should be possible to use the hd with these amount of items.
he cant possibly be the only person who has his customers and businesspartners in his outlook(?!).
with me the sync takes quite long too.
when the calendar is synced it updates the appointments "xx/yy" and after that the synchronisation stays and takes a few minutes.
how about you?
Only the first sync takes so long. I also have in excess of 3000 items to synchronize (about 300 contacts, 2800 appointments, tasks, etc). It took about three and an half hours (!), but now syncs in about 30 seconds. So no, I don't think this is unreasonable at all; there should however be a warning for the user to wait this long (as there is hardly any indication that synchronisation is actually progressing). The same number of items only took about 10 or so minutes on a PPC (Loox 560) that I had before HD. It only takes a couple of minutes on a Nokia 6500 dumbphone though. Sigh. Well, we all know that AS actually stands for ActiveStink(tm).
Cheers,
Rok
How to Increase Synchronisation Speeds
Hi Guys
I had the same problem. The way around this is to disable your Touchflo 3d from the today screen.
I was then able to sync with for the first time with outlook over 5,000 calendar appointment and over 1200 contacts in about 30 mins. After that "daily" syncs should only take 30 seconds to a minute.
Hope this helps
Kaid
ah, great tip. i will try that.
do you deactivate the tf3d for the daily syncs too?

Works 100%. Struggled with that for days, solved now. Thanks m8!
works really great!
that is awesome!.
i am so glad you told me.
by the way: is there a way to disable the tf3d calendar?
i think that should be the problem. disabling the calendar should solve it.
Try removing home tab in customisation options. It should help.
not possible
