Weather report without gprs - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

Hi guys!
First official post!;-)
I was wondering, and looking around on the board, but didn't find anything.
Since GPRS and other mobile internet is expense in Belgium, isn't there an application that loads the weather report for the next week, everytime you sync your Touch Dual (or whatever HTC...) to your PC/Laptop. That way, you wouldn't have to use GPRS
In my case it would drastically lower my gprs cost(since I sync every day!), and still have the eye candy
Grtz & thx very much!

SPB Weather Data Use

I was travelling internationally and got hit with 2MB/day roaming charges. I have mail set to download only the first 4K of emails and this is pretty small. The only thing that seems like it could account for it is SPB Weather, which, now that I look, is downloading over 100K every time it connects, which was set for hourly updates. I had read that a 5 day forecase was only 400 bytes, but instead it is taking 30 times that for a 7 day forecast.
Has anyone noticed an excessive data use from SPB weather?
i have it set to manual update, and auto when sync'd
that way i can make sure it doesnt use too much!

I used to have Yahoo.go installed on my WM5 Hermes (HTC TyTn, cingular) for quite some time. I love it, it kept my device in sync with all my yahoo services.
All my phone contacts where saved to my yahoo address book, all my calendar entries where sync with my yahoo calendar, and of course the mail as well. Also every time I took a picture with my phone camera, it will back it up to my yahoo photos, so that even after I deleted the picture from my phone it was still saved on yahoo photos, and I could download it back in to the phone any time I needed it.
I am very upset at the moment because I just superCID my TyTn, so that I could install the newest Cingular Rom in it, witch I did and it worked fine, but when I went to install yahoo go, so that I could have all my contacts, mail, calendar, etc. I find out that yahoo upgraded yahoo Go to 2.0, and that new version has not been released for PPC's yet, only for regular phones.
So, since I don't have outlook, because I always backed up my data and info to yahoo, now I have no way to sync it all back to my phone, so I have to do it manually.
The new yahoo go looks great, I can't wait for the PPC release, but until then, I will have to make do by manually importing all my contacts and calendar entries, and accessing yahoo mail by pop3.
check it out here: http://mobile.yahoo.com/go
My bad....
ok I found the link to yahoo go 1.0 here it is: http://us.rd.yahoo.com/mobile/conne...ad.go.yahoo.com/sm/ygo/win_mobile/ygo_ppc.exe
I just installed it and I am synchronizing my data as we speak.
Looks cool, worth a try...downloading.
Great find!!! However, I get an error message when I try to access stocks, weather and movies...anyone else?
It is working fine for me ... weather/movice/finance/driving directions etc. just link in (by opening up PIE, which is my default browser) to my already set preference on my "my yahoo" page.
I like the email integration --- much easier than trying to view my yahoo mail via webpage (and I never wanted to pay for the service to allow pop email access)
thanks for the link! I didnt know we had a working edition for WM5, it kept telling me no version was available!
I've been using this for quite some time. Makes easy backups of photos. It automatically uploads them to my yahoo Photos.
And backing up my calendar, and contacts is always good.
i have issues (here in the UK) of accessing Yahoo Messenger via Yahoo Go - it loads a blank page and will not take me through to the IM. i tried changing the part of the url from 'uk' to 'us' and got through - anyone else having the same issue?

I've just tried it here, it takes me to a web-based yahoo messenger. It sucks, but works!! I'm using the PPC version on a Wizard BTW.
Yahoo Go! for the PPC has a big memory leak problem.
Its been noticed before on this forum as well as the Cingular HTC forum. The application hogs all available memory (if set up to auto sync every X minutes), and forces a soft reset every other day.
I switched to using the POP3 yahoo account (premium service).

Are you using the one from this link http://us.rd.yahoo.com/mobile/conne...ad.go.yahoo.com/sm/ygo/win_mobile/ygo_ppc.exe
or this one
http://download.go.yahoo.com/sm/ygo/win_mobile/ygo_ppc_wm5.cab
This first is yahoo go v1 and the second link it yahoo go for WM5 for the Moto Q/Palm700w.
Maybe the old version 1 is bad, I havent tried either yet.

Thanks for clarifying, I wont try it now.
I am still using it ... I soft-reset once a day anyway ... it seems to work fine for me (but I am now going to keep an eye on memory to see if I have the leak issue).

Business people out there?

Hi
I have my HD for already a week and it's amazing!!.
but I decided to buy it because I needed a tool like this for business purposes, by now I'm using it for mail on the go, and of course like a powerful agenda with Pocket Informant, but due my short experience with a pocket PC, I know that there must be much more uses and software that I don't know yet, then I would like to ask for advices about this matter, may be software or even tips to be able to to take more advantages of this incredible phone!
BTW I found this two thread, but are quite short

hi, im not quite sure what you are asking for? but, i use mine for work to. i dont find the need for anything extra than what is already included in M$ mobile office
i use the calendar and outlook which is synced through my organisations exchange server though activesync over the mobile network. in the main i do this manually but also by setting it up to do autosync at intervals.
you can set it to have pushmail too if your companies mail server will allow this
pocket outlook does all that the full pc version does (near as dammit) email, access to my corporate address book, meeting scheduling and invites etc etc
is that what you wanted to know?
OK, here is the "business" oriented sub-set of all my apps:
apMemo 2.3 http://www.apsoftsystems.com/apmemo/index.htm
apMemo allows for alarmed note taking on the go
Ilium Listpro 5.0.0.2016 http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/lp/listpro.htm
Listpro is great - I use this for whole loads of lists on the PC and HD and swop the lists back and forth
Metro 5.71 http://www.nanika.net/Metro/
Metro is useful for business trips (and pleasure)
MxCalculator 2.1 http://www.trancreative.com
NewsGator Go! 2.0.0.25419 http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals...o/Default.aspx
I use a RSS feeder for business news
Pocket Informant 8.51 http://www.webis.net/index.php
RCX Lexipedia 1.2 http://www.revolution.cx/Lexipedia/Lexipedia.htm
Yes, I know this is an old app but it's still there when I need answers and don't want to go online
SBSH PocketBreeze 5.4.15 http://www.sbsh.net/products/windows...c/pocketbreeze
Fantastic today plugin to view my calender (must be used with SecondToday)
SPB Finance 2.7.0 http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/finance/?en
Not really business, but keeps track my my finances
From my thread comment: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3117017&highlight=secondtoday#post3117017
I use keepass for securing those important but (sometimes) easy to forget ID's & passwords:

thanks, well yes something like that I was looking for, but may be a little more focused in meetings and projects, I'm using list Listpro for this two purposes but I can imagine there are better and specialize software for this.
about meetings I need to lead meeting sometimes, and write down some ideas or comments in each topic on this meetings.
same with projects, I start a project, and I need to write down all the steps of it, and the progress of each one too
thanks Cheesy Dave, there are really useful app there!
thanks audscott
i guess im a caveman when it comes to such business things... i just use ms word to make lists
notepad for basic notes
i find that the ms mobile office suite included does all i need (along with the other software in pocket outlook such as tasks etc)
small tip if you do want to use a different front end like SBSH PocketBreeze or spb pocketplus etc
dont need to run secondtoday type progs which just chew up more memory, just untick manila from the today plugins screen and do away with manila. personally i find it to be just bells and whistles and not much function, uses loads more system resources than other after market apps with nothing more (less in my opinion) on offer
i use spb pocketplus together with spb weather and spb phone suite all sat as my front screen. i can access all my needed software with one touch, make calls with one touch, switch ring profiles with one touch fire up wifi with one touch... in fact 99% of what i need to do with my HD i do with 1 touch using this set of software. the only time i need to use the stylus is for typing (im kak handed using my fingers to type and am pretty fast with the stylus)
as i said up there^^^^ i use MS office for all my other bits as i can bang it stright over to my laptop to use the full versions if necessary
i guess its down to what you need, what you like and what you get used to. ive been using this combo of progs for 4 years now so am a bit stuck in the mud so to speak
ill try to do a screen grab of my today page to show you what i mean.... but you might not like it as i am very much in favour of function over form
(ive trialled spb mobile shell and spb diary but again find them unecessary.... why do you need a diary on your today screen when it is one touch away and a hell of a lot more confidential if your diary isnt open for all to see all the time (i work in healthcare so confidentiality is a big requirement! )
business
I have been using pda in my construction business for many years to keep appointments. I tend to forget them and rely on the alarm. I have most of the incoming phone calls redirected to the phone. I use agenda one because you can link contacts to appointements i.e the alarm sounds to tell me to meet Mrs Smith. I click on that and it brings up Mrs Smiths address.
We are trying business contact manager for outlook in the office as a CRM and have tried the pda add in to view them. It just does,t work. I have heard over other software that makes the contacts visible in outlook mobile.
I also use mine mainly for Business (and pleasure), work in an Australasian role with travel in Australia and New Zealand.
Must admit I am VERY impressed with the function and accuracy of WorldCard mobile. Sure beats the manual data entry of B-Card info
A few of the apps I'm using on my HD
SPB Traveller - to manage my flights, accomodation and rental car bookings.
GarminXT - with Australia and New Zealand maps to help me get to the places I need to.
SPB Weather - helps me know what to expect and what to take when I travel.
SPB Time - My travel alarm clock etc.
SPB Wallet - Helps me remember the multitude of logon details for company (and private)
systems access as well as credit cards and so on.
SPB Finance - Tracks my out of office expenses for me.
Pocket Investor - Mobile management of my stocks.
Softmaker Suite - A really great set of applications which provide me FULL edit and formatting alignment for my Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.
Pocket Informant - Replaces the PIM
RESCO Utility pack - Great file management for shifting documents around, deleting etc.
A few other general apps.
HD Tweak
Gsen
Sprite Backup
MSS Convertor
SKTools
SPB Mobile Shell (but using the "ChangeSKIN" application to provide multiple contact photo screens etc. )
SPB Phone Suite
SPB Brain Evolution
Opening multiple files in Excel Mobile

Hi jonajuna, I am a new Touch HD user (and this is my first PDA). Since you use the Office so extensively, could you please help me - how can I open more than one document e.g. in Excel? I often use Excel documents in my work and I constantly need to copy&paste info from one Excel file into another.
Thanks!
I'm also useing mine for business and pleasure. Works well with appointments, addresses, GPS, etc. during business hours.
I've picked up an HTC Touch HD, and I'm a semi-business/pleasure/personal user.
Here are some of the items that I found were useful for me.
As far as the MSDict and MSPhrase apps go, you can find English -> Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Russian, Malaysian, Chinese (trad and simplified), Korean and so on!
Here are the links for the Japanese one since I've been up all night downloading these.
http://htc-touch-hd-t8282.handster.com/product.php?id=3113
http://htc-touch-hd-t8282.handster.com/product.php?id=639
And SPB Traveler is great when it comes on converting common knowledge from overseas such as units, clothing sizes and linguistics as it helps me identify and use the right phrases.
http://htc-touch-hd-t8282.handster.com/product.php?id=439
Also, since I'm both in class and at work, sometimes I'll need a really powerful calculator and the Touch HD does not disappoint with it's capabilities.

There you go, hope this helps.
Hi there,
i´m also one of those guys who using the HTC HD for business.
Maybe the programms i use, would be helpful.
At least it depends on your special needs.
Main focus for me:
Mail -> BBconnect
ToDo list -> MLO ( My Life Organized )
Calender -> Calender Touch
Travelling -> SPB Traveller
If you need further information, just let me know.

Application Query - Scheduled email and 3G control app?

Hi everyone!
I don't post on the forum mush, but I'll fistly say thanks for some great help over the years with my HTC phones.
I'm looking for a way of having my email synchronise at certain times and actually switch the 3G/HSDPA/GPRS connection off afterward.
At the moment I can set up M$ Outlook on my Ignito to check mail (successfully) say every hour etc.. but I dont see the point in in synchronising over night and I would specifically like the 3G connection to disconnect after the synchronise to save battery power. Is there an app / fix / easy way to do this?
For example, I'd maybe like an app that will sync hourly, between the hours of say, 9am and 5pm, then close the 3G connection after each.
In the meantime, I think I'm gonna get one of those 2000mAh batteries!!
Thanks everyone, I look forward to reading about possible solutions!
Outlook Scheduler... tho it doesn't support changing 2G to 3G. you can use G-Profile for that.
Cheers nir36!
I'll check it out!
I don't need to be able to change between 2G and 3G, just switch it off after the synchronise has taken place.
Thanks ;o)
I have found that I can use Advanced Configuration 3.3 to turn off the data connection after a set amount of time.. That's handy!
I've been looking at command line actions that could be scheduled. I'd like to find out more.
tmail.exe has a '-sync' switch that would allow me to synchronise the account in question. I'm going to have a search to see if there is someway of using a command line to force the data connection closed too.
well, outlook scheduler and g-profile actually allow you to do everything you want regarding mail... when used together.. connecting.. disconnecting.. and so forth..
Excellent! Thanks ;o) - I ran out of time yesterday to have a closer look.

Several problems

I've had several problems with my new HD2.
The most recent and most worrying was it not coming out of sleep, pressing or holding the power button did not wake the device, nor did any other button or screen presses for that matter. I had to remove the battery in the end. It had happened overnight when I woke up this morning it wasn't working and then 20 minutes later when I got to work the same problem, charge is at about 71%
I read on another forum that there was a firmware fix for this on these forums but couldn't find anything...
The others are configuration problems im sure, I'm with T-Mobile (UK) and just selected TMobile during the setup wizard, all the basic stuff works like phone/sms/email (google and exchange) and browsing, but I've noticed twitter won't log in with any account...nor does MSN messenger, I've read somewhere that it's because some services expect the connection called "Internet" but with T-Mobile settings it gets renamed to "The Internet"...Still I changed the name of the service and it caused more problems than it fixed...is there a way to change what network that messenger and twitter use?
Other than these problems it's a really nice device, very pleased with it! Oh and great forums by the way, very helpful, the tips thread is fantastic.
*edit*
I should also add that I noticed sub folders in outlook don't sync, for example the inbox syncs fine with exchange 2003 but all my subfolders inside the inbox are all empty.
For the power problem see This thread . The problem may well be with the 'notification queue' and installing some software to manage this has helped a lot of people with the same problem
Your connection problems may be related to T-Mobile's connection settings, though I'm not certain as I don't use T-Mobile. It used to be that by default, T-Mobile add a Proxy Server entry in their connection settings. This is OK for standard email and surfing, but may not allow access to other services. The old trick was to simply remove the tick from the 'Proxy Server' tab in Settings/Connections/Connections (accessed from the Sense Settings tab, then Menu/Show all Settings.
For the Outlook sub folders, you need to go into your Messaging program, then hit 'Menu' then scroll the window up to see a 'Tools' submenu. From here you can access the 'Manage Folders' list where Inbox should have a '+' to allow it to expand.

I used to have the exact same problem with "waking up" the device, until I removed some program links from the StartUp folder.
It seems to me that for some weird reason that folder is processed each time the device comes back from suspend mode and some of the apps in there just didn't play right with my HD2.
Or maybe the apps started in there just don't like the suspend mode in general.
So after I had reduced the number of apps started upon boot-up to an absolute minimum, I no longer have any issues with waking my HD2 up.
Also, you should implement the GPRS reg hack to reduce battery consumption.
I found that auto-disabling the GPRS data connection after 5 minutes inactivity made all the difference on my HD2 for preserving battery power.
Finally, disable that brain damaged "two step" unlock procedure of the HTC stock ROM either via a Registry Hack or by flashing Tom's or Leo's ROM from XDA (requires SPBL to be installed first).
For most of these tweaks you can also try the "BsB Tweaks" program (also to be found on XDA), w/o the need to flash or hack anything.
Sorry, but I don't use T-Mobile, so I can't help you there.
Thank you both, I've fixed my outlook now and looking through the other fixes. Much appreciated!

WM is still troubled with the notification queue problem? I used to have problems with that on my first WM phone, when my alarms wouldn't go off in the morning. I gave up in the end, and so never used my device as an alarm clock. And having come from Psions that had (and still do) the best alarm clock and calendar feature, I found it really disappointing.
I'll have to have a look at that thread. Thanks.

Agreed- it is a lot better than it used to be (till now!) but I resolutely refuse to use the built in Alarms due to their unreliability, and have been using Chronos for the last 2 years (much better than Spb Time, if less graphically pleasing!)
I dont have alarms set only for ones generated at work through calendar items, so I disabled calendar item sync
Yup...unticking proxy server lets MSN connect, again big thanks for this!
Anyone know the implications of this, will it stop other services from working or end up charging me more or something (on an unlimited data tarrif from tmob)

It shouldn't make any difference- T-Mobile just use it to limit the connectivity to their own servers, but there's no penalty for not using the 'feature'.

Yes it is a bit flaky around here! That is why I now have a Vodafone Access Gateway femtocell at home, so I now have 5 bars of 3G signal!
