Battery at 0% / howto do full backup? (HELP!!!) - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Something rather scary happened to me yesterday. I have the original car charger for my K-JAM and have been using it frquently (for TomTom mostly). Yesterday it blew its fuse, and I replaced the fuse and plugged in my wizard, which then promtly reset. Once I got it back up, it claimed my battery was empty, and even after a full night's charge it still claims my battery is at 0%.
I assumed I'd zapped the battery and got myself a new one. However, to my surprise, once I started it up again with a new battery (after having charged it - the orange led was blinking and it looked like it was recharging) it still reports 0% charge on main battery - both from the internal battery meter and my Resco Today plugin (the backup battery seems fine though)
Resets have not solved my problem, and now I'm considering a hard reset as a last ditch effort. The repair time for the K-JAM in Norway now is over one month (!!!) and I need it for a long drive through Europe in two weeks, and cannot wait for a month to get it fixed. For some, a hard reset is not all that dramatic, but I've spent a LOT of time tweaking my wizard into what it is today, and I'd very, very much like to keep everything. So, to my two questions:
1: Is there any possibility that something is funny in software than can be fixed here?
2: If I have to hard reset, can anyone point me to software or a thread that describes how to preserve all setting, registry tweaks, windows startup/start menu, settings etc. through a hard reset? (i.e. what to back up and how to do it in practice? I've used SPB Backup before, but there has been warnings that it will not work as a restore after a hard reset, can anyone confirm this?
I'm a little desperate here guys, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

One more thing: when the Wizard is in the charger, it does recognize the fact that it is being charged (and thus does not turn itself off), but at the very instant I pull the plug, it dies. Another strange thing is that the little battery icon at the top of the screen indicates a full battery, but if I click it and get to Windows' poer settings screen, it claims the battery is empty.
Does the battery meter read some registry values I can manipulate?

1. I do not know what can be done with for software for this, but probably your battery has to be calibrated.
2. Sprite backup can do all that. When you run Sprite backup, the default settings for the "backup" button is enough to do retain all your tweaks, data and applications. unfortunately, they stopped shipping trial versions. So you cannot "try before you buy".

Second that, buy Sprite back up program. It is really a good program that is now supporting the upgrading of ROM's which is something that can make your life SO much easier!

Usually if a fuse blows it's not for nothing. It might have fried the charging circuitry in the Wizard by the way...

I'm afraid you're probably right on the spot there. I've tried a charging both my batteries, and neither of them seem to get charged, even after a hard reset, so I have now admitted defeat and scheduled a repair, which means no GPS navigation through Europe this summer
I did manage to make a full backup with SPB Backup, but since the device won't stay on long enough for me to restore now, I'll have to wait and see if it works. I'm not doing a upgrade, so it might work flawlessly - only time will tell.
Thanks for the fedback though, it's much appreciated!

Olesk. Were you successful with restore using Spb-Backup? I use Spb-Backup buy had not heard the rumour that it might not restore after a hard re-set. I would be pleased to know how yours worked. Thanks.

I haven't tried yet, as it decides to die from loss of battery power in the process. No idea why it suddenly decides to do this, and I'm not convinced it's SPB's fault, so I'll try again once the Wizard is back from the repair shop. I'll post the results hare and send you a private message as well once I try it, but it might take weeks in the worst case though.

Panick

Just had a major panick!!! My Xda2 would not power up, at first I thought it was just the battery that had died even though I thought it was ok, until I got home, tried to put it on charge and nothing! just dead.
Anyway, I panicked and tried a hard reset and it worked,( albeit I lost all of my settings and programmes) but at least it came back to life.
Does anyone know what could have happened to cause this to happen? If so please let me know so I can avoid it happening again and losing everything.
Many thanks
This happened to me one time about a month ago. Restoring from my Sprite Backup got it back into shape quite nicely in short order.
I never did discover the cause.
I know, really freaked me out, thought £300 had just gone down the swanny!!!!.
Also to make things worse, although I did a full backup the other day, I cant find it anywhere on my pc!!!!!
XDA1 behaves same when the battery is absolutely empty - doesn't charge and doesn't react at all. But apart from XDA2s, XDA1s don't have backup battery...
Thanks for the reply Bob,
So it looks like you have to keep an eye on the charge then, cos if it completely discharges, then u think thats what might cause the problem??
The same here
I had this problem already several times. I must say until now I was not able to pinpoint the cause. With me it occures once a week and I can say I'm getting fed up with it. Once I had it completly charged and the next day the Qtek was completly shutdown. So only a Hard Reset could bring it back :-(
I think this may be related to a faulty battery, I ordered a new one to see if occures again but the battery is out of stock :-(
Does anyone have another idea what could cause this.
Try searching the forums for "hard reset". There is already some discussion about this.
Had the same problem 2 in 4 days. I was working on excel once, and the second time I went to make a call (can't remember what I was doing before).
Both times it took a hard reset, and when it re-started I checked the battery level - 32% the first time, and 48% the second.
The odd thing is that the screen wasn't completely blank whe it crashed.
The first time I had to return home to load Sprite to restore. Then I set Sprite to backup as .exe, which was a lifesaver for a job I was working on.
The second time I had more time to play with options, but even taking out the battery and doing a soft reset didn't sort it out.

SPV M1000 Resets completely for no reason..

Dear All,
I have had my SPV now for about 4 weeks now and very pleased with it. However, twice in the last week it hasn't responded when I turned it
on and ended up removing and re-inserting the battery. When it comes back, it starts with the "Welcome to Pocket PC" setup wizard and all my data is gone.
Has anyone else had this problem. This problem has happened with both
versions of the ROM. The only s/w I am running is
Tube (VisualIT)
MS Arcade Pack (Pacman, DigDug etc)
MS Voice Command
Agenda Fusion
CityTime
Regards & Thanks
Chris
Yeah i got the same problem. But it happens when I upgraded my ExtRom from Orange.com. Sometimes it stays at suspend mode, then i have to perform a hard reset to wake up the device. Very odd.

I have had my M1000 for about four weeks too now and although it occasionally soft resets it never fails to respond to the power button. Maybe you have a faulty phone?
On a different note, you say you have Voice Command, I was looking for places that sell it in the UK but it appears to only be available in the US, if you could let me know where you got it I would be really grateful.
Hope you sort your phone out!

Got the thing for two months now, running in this config for about one month.

Yep, I am having the same problem or much the same problem. The unite works fine until every four or five days when I notice that the bluetooth light and the green phone radio light are flashing (even though bluetooth is turned off). It does not respond to the power button and then lights go off when I try a soft reset. The only way I can get it back on it with a hard reset.
It does not seem to be a battery issue as the battery is fully charged and when I try plugging in the Charger (before doing the hard reset) the charging light does not light up. I have had the same problem with several M1000s from Orange.
Anyone have any ideas at to what might be going on?
Thanks,
Steve

With Orange Switzerland SPV M1000 I experience the following problems:
1) Bluetooth lights (blue light) and the battery lights flashes even though
bluetooth is not connected and the battery level is fine.
2) Once every other day the device (though fully charged) freezes and I end up doing soft reset.
3) Removing battery already puts the device to soft reset. Orange
4) The activeSync is running without me having to start any activeSync session.
5) Abruptly I get message the memory is full and the device then freeses.
Is anyone having the above problems? How do i resove this?
Many thanks

SAME PROBLEM AS THE REST OF YOU WHO HAVE THEIR SPV FREEZED UP VERY OFTEN. IN MY CASE IT'S EVERY 3 OR 4 DAYS, POWER BUTTON AND SOFT REST DOES NOT RESPONDE, SO IT'S EITHER HARD RESET OR SOMETIMES SIMPLY REMOVING THE BATTERY DOES THE WORK. I HAD MY PHONE REPLACED 3 TIMES ALREADY AND STILL THE SAME PROBLEM EVEN WITHOUT INSTALLING ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE BUT WHAT CAME BUNDLE WITH THE ORANGE PHONE. IS THIS A ROM BUG ???
SPV M1000 FRANCE
SD CARD 1 GB
OMEGA ONE BATTERY PACK PRO
OMEGA ONE JOURNAL BAR
SPB GPRS MONITORS.
FORTUNATELY I USE THE X BACKUP PROVIDED WITH THE PHONE TO SAVE MY DATA, BUT IT'S TIME COMSUMMING AND REPETITIVE AS AFTER EACH TIME THE PHONE RESETS ITSELF, I HAVE TO RESTORE IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
IF SOMEBODY COULD IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, THIS WOULD HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE ME
THANKS
RICHARD
There have been frequent reports of this problem- Orange are aware of it, and are replacing M1000's as required. They are currently testing a new ROM, so it appears that they think it may be a ROM problem, though it could also be a batch of faulty hardware.
Another possibility
Turning off the record button seems to have helped, could it be that this is being caught and filling memory / draining batrtery?
3rd phone 3 weeks.
Great when working - anyone using a GPS receiver? Tried a TomTom with an XDA 2 lead is not recognised

Remember you have to turn of the IR in settings>connections>beam before a GPS will be recognised.

we got almost 30 of these at our work, it seems the only one to have this problem is... my one! so i swapped it for another one and it did the same problem... hmm, they must not like power users, the other users are idiots so they dont really mess about with the settings n all
anyhooz, ill be upgrading all of em to SE very soon and i doubt that rom will have the same glitch...
who knows... now that we can confirm (99%) that SE works on the xda II maybe the operators will now make an official upgrade to SE... they have no reason not to

Hmm. That is interesting. Only having one here - and having problems - I do not have much to compare.
Do you think the problem comes from changing the standard settings or using extra software then?
By the way the new ROM does not seem to make much difference in terms of this problem, alas!
Exactly the same thing to me...
Every 5 or 6 days... it goes of for no reason, and the only way to wake it up is to hard reset it! weird SPV... maybe some day a nice guy will come up with a solution to our problem! Hopefully...

Those experiencing issues with this device going into coma (requiring Hard Reset to clear)please would you post detailed accounts of when the issue occurs.
Please confirm power settings, what applications were open on the device and whether the radio or BT was on.
Does the problem occur off or on charge, if on does same problem occur if charged from travel charger not dock?
If off charge, if known - state both internal and external battery charge levels when problem occurs?
What is seen on the handset at point of coma?
Working from soft Reset through battery off to hard reset, what was necessary to restore the device and did soft reset or battery off result in a dump?
Could ROM V's and bootloader V's also be stated.
cheers guy's, together we'll crack it
To keep an old Thread Alive
 I have had my phone from about June last year. The first reset occurred about the 3rd Jan this and two more occurring in the past few weeks the last one on sat 12th Feb
The history as I can recall with the last reset is as follows. I took the phone out from work (cradle) Friday afternoon after 4pm don’t think it was put to charge again before the incident also the phone was not used very often as its a work phone. It was on stand by all day Saturday with the green light flashing but no signal input was being received as I was expecting a cal which never came only to find out the phone was off as mentioned by the caller when I called them. Got home about 530pm with the light still flashing and tried to switch the phone on after finding out no signal was received, the light then went out. Could remember this quite distinctly as it happed on the previous occasion. To activate the phone i have to take the battery and sim card out as with the previous occasion put the card in another/different phone to activate it (make a cal) then put the card and battery back in for the phone to work when it would then go through the reset process. Once working on checking, both battery powers were very low think less than 50% as when i checked some time after they were up to 75%
Am in an office with 3 other users and the only one with this problem and am on my 3rd phone since the year started. It seems to be linked with low battery power (both) and extended stand by when it completely shuts down. Trust this would help to get us a stage further.
i have had two m1000's with this problem,
orangecare stepped up for the replacement and i upgraded the 2nd to win2003se and it still does it!
i make scheduled backups now and have learnt to live with it until my contract expires..
on another seperate note..

MORE ON THIS
I had an M1000 that worked fine but a small problem occured and orange replaced it - the new one had this problem every 7 days or so - the bluetooth light was flashing although not switched on and when I try to turn phone on it wont - remove/replace bat and resets - I upgraded to ROM 2.02 from this forum but was using origional orange extended rom and it made no difference - if it is a rom problem its in oranges extended rom
I was on a 166wwe - boot loader 1.06 - dont know radio version but was still happening after DCM 2.02 WM2003SE WWE from this forum with radio 1.18.00 and original ORANGE ext rom so if is on ROM is definatley oranges ext rom that has a problem. - HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN WHILE ON CHARGE????
THEY REPLACED MY PHONE WITH A REFURB - ITS NOW FINE BUT IM NOT HAPPY
guys lets think here
were all orange subs so its got to be an orange thing (so unlikley to be hardware) - there are people here (myself included) who have upgraded radio and OS so I am begining to think it is in the extended rom on these machines - has anyone who has replaced extended rom had this trouble - I would experiment but no longer have this fault - I never thought Id wish I could get it back but now I think I can see a resolve
we need an orange customer who does not have this trouble to post extended rom on here for us all to try????? - - - Please ??????
it would be nice to crack this one guys keep plugging on
Had my M100 nearly a year now and after many many resets decided to call Orange as I would have thought this was a known problem with them. But according to technical they have never seen this before!!!
There response was ... backup your data! doh!
I told them I did and it was unacceptable to say this as the thing is faulty it takes over an hour to reload the data and it's happend 4 times since I called them 4 days ago.
PS: has anyone got a copy of the original 1.66 rom as you can no longer get it from Orange.

Universal crashing after charging overnight

Twice now I've put my device on to charge overnight, as I have for the last 8 months that I've had it, and it has not been responding when I come to get it in the morning.
I plug it in, device closed, around midnight then come to get it the next day and when I open it the screen is black, pressing power does nothing and the only thing I can do is reset. This has been happening since I did a hard reset 2-3 days ago. I have it set so that it doesn't turn off when on external power, and so it turns off after 2 minutes when on battery power.
Can anyone think what's happening to it?
Given the number of threads I've made recently you can probably guess I'm starting to regret getting this phone.
Could be freezing due to unstable ROM, could be battery... which ROM are you on?
The one which it came with out of the box from O2 in July 2006. Don't really know anything about ROMs, if there's more info you need me to retrieve I'll be happy to - just let me know how.

What programs do you have installed? Specifically, which ones are used as today plugins?
It's interesting it only started happening after hard reset... sometimes a hard reset will go 'wrong' and install funny and the best thing to do is another hard reset. Might be worth considering.
Non-standard today plugins that I use are SPB Pocketplus, SPB Backup and SPB Time.
I have just taken it off charge now and pressed power and it has just turned the backlight on full but there's nothing on the screen. The main difference between now and before the hard reset is I'm not using the SPB Time today plugin. I'm going to try disabling that.
This is quite a worry for me as I'm meant to be using it to wake me up in the mornings and I don't have another method at the moment...
It happens to me too...
my problem is related to the battery (I have 2 batteries and it happens only with one)....
soft reset first thing in the morning ;-)
It seems disabling the SPB Time today plugin did nothing.
Also, yesterday I had it plugged in for around half an hour but nothing happened. It seems it only crashes when it has been plugged in overnight.
did you try with another battery?
to me it happens only when it stay connected to the charger after it reached 100%
I don't have another battery to try with.
Another member of the 'normally I have to softreset in the morning' brigade... but then I have an alarm clock
Now this is totally unfounded and just a complete and utter guess, but based on logical thought processes of some kind anyhow... try if ya like.
1. Place in bootloader overnight hoping to discharge the battery by morning.
2. Soft reset and fully recharge BY WALL CHARGER.
3. Once fully charged, hard reset.
Reasoning:
1. Apparent way to recalibrate battery to full charge
2. Possible findings that USB charge will never charge to full capacity
3. Just in case there is some funky little OS setting that screwed up on your last hard reset.
Logical to me, but then I'm an 1/8th Irish... Hmmmm Let us know if ya do and hope it helps.
Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to try that for another 3 weeks - I'm home from university and I left my wall charger there (I never use it)
i've had the exact same problem - its a faulty battery, trust me.
you're welcome to follow my thread on the subject:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285147
after ordering the right battery from ebay - the problem was solved.
I'm a little confused by your topic, this is what I've got from it - tell me if it's right:
You had the original battery - that's the top one in this picture that you attached. That started crashing at 59%.
You then got the bottom one in that picture from ebay and that battery had the same problem as mine is having.
You switched back to your old one, which solved the problem.
...What is it you're suggesting I do, get a battery from ebay? I am confused because it seems it was the battery from ebay that caused problems for you.
nekdo123 posted in my thread that he bought a different battery from ebay, which worked great.
i can now confirm that, because i recently bought the same battery as he did - and it really does work flawlessly.
it is a "PolarCell Akku 1800mah battery". the only problem in buying it is that it's on a german ebay version, so it is hard to understand the terms and conditions, because i don't speak german...
i managed to understand it by translating it with an automated translating site, which helped.
the link is on the thread... good luck!

You'll probably find that the other battery was made in China too... most things these days are...
It's probably not what country made it, but how it was manufactured.
Today I received a package from the ebayer I ordered it from. It contained a receipt but no battery. Why would they send a receipt over without a battery?

My backup battery = 0% ????

Can i know is this a problem with my Wizard or with the WM6.1, i was using SK Tools that i found out that my Backup Battery was 0% anybody know how can i charge it??? Thanks.
Reading your post made me wonder about mine. I'll give you back-story as to why, or it may not be too clear (as some people have told me I'm full of it for this complaint before).
On the few (more than half a dozen but less than twenty) times I've had to pull the battery to do a reset, either because it became unresponsive or because it freaked-out. I say freaked-out because on at least four occasions in the last six months when I was in the middle of a data session and received an incoming phone call it would show me the incoming call window but I couldn't press the answer button... no matter how many times I pushed the soft-key or the screen it continued to ring - even after the call was forwarded to voice mail it STILL rang endlessly until I pulled the battery. Just last week it freaked-out with my morning alarm, the alarm went off every minute for and hour and a half complete with vibration until I gave up trying to clear the notification queue and just yanked the battery. The difference between the incoming call panic and this was the device got really hot, like I could feel the back panel get hot in my hand and my BatteryStatus panel showed 104°F. I got worried for the electronic components so I held it in-front of my window A/C unit and then it went up to 107°F at which point I figured that didn't work well and yanked the battery to prevent any internal damage.
What clicked in my mind with your post was every occasions when I reinstalled the battery, my device had forgotten EVERYTHING. Not just the clock , but also my contacts, my calendar, my text messages, my email messages, my email account settings, my activesync partnerships, everything. It was like I had done a hard-reset even though I didn't.
I just installed SKTools and mine says:
-------------------------------------
LION
On AC Line: Yes (charging via USB)
Main battery: 79%, 4096mV, 155mA, 27 C
Backup battery: 0%
-------------------------------------
I'm hearing this from some people but not others, I'm wondering if this is specific to Cingular 8125 models as maybe a way for them to cheapen the price by forgoing the backup battery? Just in-case anyone is curious about that theory I'm running the stock Cingular ROM 2.25.11.1 WWE and it's never flashed.

I guess its in the WM6.1 ROMs because its said that they dont need backup batteries so maybe they dont charge them as well. Seondly it cant be limited to the CIngular cause i own a T-Mobile and Third thing is that my Backup Battery was always full in the Stock T-Mobile WM5 ROM. I dont know hat is this????????
The backup battery is similar to the CMOS RAM battery in your laptop or desktop. If it goes bad when you power off the settings like type of HD are lost. This is a hardware issue that will require a service center or 2M Micro-Miniature Tech.
I had the problem of losing my settings when my 8125 used to be a G4. I have no idea what the backup battery status was then, but I can only assume it was 0% since it wouldn't save my settings. I bricked my G4 and the replacement motherboard I got from an MDA is a G3. The backup battery on this one is showing 100% and I have successfully pulled the battery without losing such things as date and time. I would suspect the new motherboard had a good battery more than it being a G3 vs. G4 issue.
This thread should now be CLOSED
?????
Ok, maybe this thread should be closed....but...
Don't flame me here please...does the Cingular 8125 have a BackUp battery?
I'm asking because I used to have a Dell Axim x51V that DID NOT have one...all the infos were kept on static memory, so no need to have one.
Even if you take out the main battery, everything would stay there.
And, with the 8125, when you restart the phone, it would take the time and date from your cellphone carrier network....unless you don't have coverage!
Just wondering...

Yes, i guess it does have it......i guess soooo but still wait for the any seniors advice
Backup battery its a little round battery (like in watch). It helps to save the settings in memory - time, timing zone if you replace main battery or charge level of main battery is zero.
To replace backup battery is hard because it is used point soldering.

Blank screen crisis

During synchronisation, I found that the screen in my HD had gone blank. It could still receive calls. A soft reset didn't solve it. I rang HTC support, and all they could say was to send it in for repairs.
I then used mDesktop to look at the screen from my PC. It seemed there were some programs still to be installed. After installing these, I did a Sprite backup. This must have fixed the registry as the machine came to life during the reset.
I'm just leaving this in case someone else has this problem.
There's a way out.
I wrote too soon. Blank again. I suspect an intermittent hardware problem.
Try turning off device and removing battery overnight. Then re-insert battery and turn on device.
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
Tried this, but didn't seem to make a difference. I'll try a hard reset.
Strangely, after one last kiss of life with nDesktop (a soft reset controlled from the desktop), the HTC seems to be working fine. It's lasted more than 12 hours now. I hope for more.
What does disconnecting the battery overnight do?

Other users have experienced similar situations as yourself with screen going blank but functions still working. One fix for this was to remove battery and leave device off overnight. I'm not sure why this worked, possibly letting device cool off, but it has worked for others. This is why I suggested it
Going blind slowly
Well, there seems a pattern. With time, the screen eventually fails to turn on. I then sync with the desktop and use mdesktop to re-boot the device. It works for up to an hour, sometimes more. Then it lapses back into blindness.
It can't be a software fault, as it happens even after a hard reset.
I don't think it's a faulty component, as it wouldn't fix after a sync.
It must be some strange electrical thing going on that responds to the reset process, but then eventually fades.
Perhaps I need some sorcery.

If it is indeed hardware why not return it under warranty? Just make sure you have a stock SPL and rom on device before you return it
It's just out of warranty. That's why I was so keen to find a solution first.
Is the warranty 2 years?
Warranty is generally 12 months. Found this similar thread which may help
I assumed it was 12 months, but when I looked at the warranty pdf file from HTC's website it says 2 years.
http://www.htc.com/www/support/warranty.html
Western Europe, Windows Mobile

date of original purchase for mobile devices, and twelve (12) months
for accessories (whether included in the mobile device sales package
