My is Wizard Dead. Please help - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I got a used wizard today,it is a few weeks old I also got a cradle with it.
I pluged in the cradle to the USB port and the charger to power, after playing with it for 1-2 hours I placed the wizard on the cradle to charge and after a few mins i noticed that it was over heating. I removed it from the cradle right away and noticed that the battery was droping 1% every minute or so. After it was down to 27% i removed the charger and left only the usb connection and placed the wizard on the cradle again. it was charging fine, when it was up to 90% removed it from the cradle and again was droping fast.
When it was down to around 25-30% of the battery I did a soft reset and since then I can never get it to start again also the red charging light does not show.
What the heck is wrong with it? I also get a light burning smell from the bottom of the wizard where the connector is located.
Any help?
I need your lights guys.

Don't like the sound of the light burning smell, that sounds like an electrical fault. It looks like your battery has died and the wizard battery setup is well known to do this. You need to plug it into the official mains charger (not the usb one) as this has an output of 1A, enough to kick start the wizard battery into life and start the charging. You need to wait a short while though before the light comes on. If this fails try to get a new battery and try that. Any more light burning smells and it needs to go back to the supplier.

I would suggest that you send it back to replace/repair. The rapid dropping of the battery power suggest that it is using power somewhere (illegally). I've heard cases of battery caught on fire, etc. and I won't suggest you to use it anymore until you sort out the 'burning' smell.

First of all thanks for your replys.
I pluged the charger on it and the red charging light came on after a while.
charged for over 6 hours and its still red? I think after been charged should change to green? right?
anyways after all that still doesnt want to turn on. I got it to start a couple of times but only to the point that shows the splash screen with the rom numbers and then it turns back off.
Should I give it a smash across the room on the wall? done that with some other things and worked just kiding.

Forgot to add that up to the point when i did the soft reset the device was working fine except the charge drop. Soft reset was done while it was working ( turned on)..... if thats any help.

That ain't gonna do jack sh1t to it. If it can't start to get into bootloader, it can't flash....and it's not a flash issue.
Usually the red light means power but not charging - happens to my qtek 9100 when I let it get too flat and I have to remove and insert the battery while the mains adaptor is attached - others have to 'jump start' the battery by directly connecting to a PSU - I wouldn't do this with yours.
From what you have said it sounds like a short somewhere. Any signs of water damage? Warranty? What Wizard do you have and what country are you in?
Richard

I got the wiza 200 O2 xda mini S from a guy in UK from ebay. The idiot sold me a cradle for it with an adaptor that says 12V on it (Like an idiot that I am i just noticed that) but then again how am I supposed to think that he gave me an adaptor that its not made for it when it says on the back of it "for Imate - Kjam". Do you guys think thats what burned the **** out of the unit ?
dont forget that some times turns on shows the ROMS numbers and turns off.

No water damage... I think its on warranty... I live in Greece.

Might not be the cradle - it could be it steps down internally to 5v. Use a meter and check what it outputs to the phone. Warranty with XDA's are 2 years to the *original* purchaser. As they are only supplied with an airtime agreement then that isn't you.
Richard

have you tried changing batteries to a new one? Seriously, thats the easiest thing you could do right now and you could actually get results.

Ok this is what I did.
Removed the baterry from the device,
got a 12V 1 Amp power supply that I had lying around and give it a few shots connecting it to the battery giving it an electro shock.
(If you're going to try this be very carefull.<<<< DONT LEAVE the power supply connected to the battery>>>> just give it a few shots 1 second on and off.
That was it.
It started working, device turned on and now its charging (I think) yellow light is on.
I'm going to leave it on for a few hours and see what happens.
Wish me good luck. I'll let you know soon.

ok... this is what happend.
Battery is drained and its not charging due to a blown fust on the main board.
I open the phone and placed and solder a little wire over the fuse.
Still does not charge. ^%$#%$#$^%$*
Before I replaced the fuse or should i say short it the yellow light would come on for a few min and then red again. Now when I charge the battery with another external power supply the pda comes on for a few mins and then dies again. ( no charging light whatsoever).
Does anyone know where to get a mainboard for it and about how much it costs?
Asking for help again.

Hey man, sorry to hear about that.
The best you can do is to claim your money from ebay.
You probably killed it when you pluged in the 12V PSU. That's 230% of the normal Volts! Otherwise sell it for parts.

I'm in the process of claiming the money back from the IDIOT that sold it to me.
Lets see if that part of Ebay works as good.

Doubt it. Did you ask the seller for help before opening the phone and voiding the original warranty on the device?

Not a good idea IMO as now the blame is on you as previously he may have been able to get warranty service from the original vendor.
Richard

I did ask.
He is not the original buyer.
what was I suposed to do.... track back 2-3 buyers to find the original... send it to him so he can have it repaired? Anyway it was out of warranty because of the burned fuse that says that some other charger was used with it.

I had a similar thing happen but fortunately not as bad as yours. Twice now my battery has mysteriously drained completely. The last time when I tried to turn the unit on, it flashed the boot screen for a couple of seconds then poof, no more juice. When I plugged it into the USB port, nothing, no lights, no charge, no recognition from Activesync, I thought the unit was fried. I use Tmobile and got to admit they did send me a replacement fairly quickly. Before I packed up my unit I thought maybe I should plug it in using the wall charger and presto, it came on and is working fine. I have no idea what causes this but do know that if the battery is completely discharged the USB port can not over come this to put a charge on.

Same thing happened to me, kind of strange though. The charge was perhaps 70% to the best of my knowledge. I flashed it with Mr. Clean ROM and booted it up.. it came in fine into WM5, then it started the installation of the 3 progs or whatever comes with Mr. Clean.. after the second finished the unit just died *poff*. Screen blank, no responce to power buttons or any other buttons for that matter.
I've tried taking out the battery for different intervals of time, no luck. I've tried using the AC charger, no luck. No lights, sounds, telepathy or matrix ****.. it just lies there like a dummy phone.. hmm what to do. Bought it from a guy in UK (im in sweden) on eBay, don't think I will have much luck there.. even though it's brand new...
Any thouhgts?

I have had this problem - I bought a replacement battery and all is now fine. Another thread in this group states that the battery cannot charge without the OS up - so if the battery is completely discharged then it is impossible to charge through the phone. The only solution seems to be somehow to charge the battery directly - as appears to have been done earlier in this thread.
Chris
p.s. if anyone knows of another way to do it I'd be interested to hear as I'd like to revive my old battery and keep it as a spare

60 Day old Orange M3100 DEAD

I bought my Orange M3100 about 60 days ago and it has been working well until today. Last night I plugged it in to get charged and this morning I noticed that my alarm didn't go off. When I looked at the phone I saw that the charge light on the phone was red; I had never seen it red befor. When I tried to turn on the phone....Nothing, I tried to do a soft reset, hard reset, remove the battery and the sim card put them all back in....still nothing.
I tried hooking it up to the computer, car charger, wall charger and still nothing. The only time i get anything is when i plug it into power and even then the only thing i get is a red LED light at the top of the phone.
Does anybody have any ideas as to how to fix it??
I really appreciate any help as I paid $575 for this phone 2 months ago.
Thanks,
David

There have been other instances of this problem. I had it once and it eventually came back after lots of fiddling. The last thing I did was to leave the battery out for half an hour - whether it was this that corrected fault I don't know. The issue ssems to be around the battery or circuit that monitors battery. I've not heard a definitive solution other that time!!
Edit: Also not unique to Hermes - seen this on several other phones PDA or otherwise.
Mike
Thanks for responding. I will try that now and let you know if it worked.
**Keeping my fingures crossed**
This happened to a wizard. really frustrating. I just had to exchange. But my m3100 ha sissues charging. sometimes when I plug it in it will behave like it is not plugged in. I fiddle with the plug and wiggle it and nothihng. let it sit and then on comes the charge light...but then some times it goes out. really wonky and scary cause I too paide 650 for my hermes and can't ecahnge it with my provider
Well I waited only 30 min and that didn't work...I will try 2 hours and hope it fixes the problem....

Darn!!
Curiously had this exact issue with a cheap office mobile a few weeks ago. Nothing would work. As it was chaep I took it apart- nothing loose or such like, put it back together and worked straight off. Not that I'm suggesting you try that!
I still think it will come good but what a frustrating wait. One post I saw was from someone whose TyTN never charged from the day he got it. How's your warranty/guarantee situation?
Mike
Well I am in the US and I bought it from a guy in the UK. I have sent him an email but didn't get a response. I am not sure if Orange in the UK will honor the warranty. As I said it is only 60 days old.
It is very weird. I think I will go to my local Cingular store and try a new battery, maybe that will help. I would rather it be a battery issue than something with the phone itself.

Sounds like a good idea. (guy in the UK - not a scotsman I hope!!)
Check this link. I know he's talking about car charger but the bit about having charger plugged in whilst soft re-setting might be interesting. Second last post page one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=277742&highlight=reset
EDIT Just tried having mine plugged into charger and removed battery. Light instantly goes red. Suggests your problem most likely battery and not device. Might be worth trying also taking battery in and out whilst connected to charger.
Mike
Mike - Thank you for your help in this issue and the suggestions....looks like we are getting closer to a solution.
I don't have my wall charger here at work but i connected it to the PC USB cable while the battery was OUT, then I poped the battery in and the red light changed to Amber to indicate it is charging. The phone powered up after a soft reset. The battery shows 0% charge even though it was plugged in all of last night. It now seems to be charging, I will wait to see if the battery holds the charge or not.
Now I don't know if the problem is with the battery, charger, or phone
I guess I will be able to narrow it down in a few hours and see if the battery holds a charge.

Brilliant!!!
Sounds good. so the secret here maybe, taking battery out and in whilst connected to charger or usb?
I'm confident it will hold charge and things will be fine as mine is.
Like I said earlier it takes time and in the end it works fine again, BUT what precisely caused it to work again so we can help others? Because like me you've tried quite a few things.
Mike
I just hope that this will not be a regular issue.
What finally worked was:
1) Remove battery
2) Connect phone to charger or USB (USB in my case)
3) Insert the battery while phone is connected to charger
4) Red light should turn Amber
5) Soft Reset
In the 20 minutes or so that it has been charging the battery went from 0% to 10%

That sounds positive. Well if my experience is anything to go by I've only had it once in 4-5 months.
With your permission I think this may be worth a spot on the Wiki. I'd be happy to use your points above and also Cieplowski's points which appear similar but have a couple of other observations, and put these up as potential answers to this not uncommon issue.
I would not do this until over the weekend just to see how you get on, though I have every confidence.
Mike
I think putting it on the wiki would be an excellent idea.
Right now it is at 70% charge so things are looking good....
I will post back on Monday and let you know how the weekend went
Thanks again,

Dead magician...? Red light!

Hi all,
Need som urgent help. The backcover of my device is not fitting well any longer. Guess I´ve bumped it to many times...
As a result (Iguess) I cant turn on or even charge my magician!
The only thing that is happening when I try to charge is that a red light is turned on. What does this mean?
Any solution of how to get it work again?
Is it possible to buy a new back-cover? Live in Sweden.
Thankful for some ideas!
Regards Emil
Most probably the notch on the battery cover that hits the microswitch lever has broken. You will find the microswitch on the lower-right corner of the device when facing down. Put something soft but strong enough (ie. foam) to keep the microswitch in the ON postion then mount the battery cover and temporarily fix it with tape. Be sure to keep your device plugged in via USB or charger in order not to totally discharge the backup battery. If the backup battery gets depleated, then it's like doing a hard reset.
You can buy parts from ebay but I've always bought from Brando and is very reliable dealer (shop.brando.com.hk). Delivery is quite fast too.
Hi Zerimar and thanks for your answer!
Unfortunately that didn´t do the trick. Still the same red light when trying to charge. And I can´t turn it on! I am pretty sure that the battery is flat out by now but even so I would think it would load and then after a while, I would be able to turn it on.
Am really frustrated abt this!
Any more ideas maybe?!?

Well, that´s what I´m trying to get around... Thats why I´m hanging around here
If have have my device charged via USB or charger, the LED becomes as soon as I remove the battery cover. If I hit the microswitch lever then the LED turns green and start to boot up. If main battery is removed the LED stays red even though hitting the microswitch's lever.
It looks like it's not charging your main battery or your battery is already defective. If your device is over a year old and you're still using the same battery, then its time to change it. Bulges in a battery is a sign that it needs replacement.
Before sending your device for repair, why not look for someone you know who also has a Magician or equivalent device and quickly borrow his/her battery?
I had red LED when plugging into a main charger - and then the phone reset.
Red LED + loop booting-poweroff = dead battery
If the LED is RED when you charge your device for hours
If the device tries to boot sometimes, but powers off by itself some minutes after (it means, at least, that your device CAN boot! )
Your battery may be dead, I bought a new one for 10Euros on ebay...
Those batteries are perfectly compatible with HTC Prophet or HTC Beetles (Ipaq 6515) and maybe other devices... easy to find!

very dead exec

Having not use my exec for a bout a month I now find it will not start or take a charge (battery has 3.8v ) but it will not power up ,it is still in warranty BUT I have changed the rom ,so don’t know if o2 will repair it
If I use the wall charger a LED flashes on for about 1 second ,if I plug in to usb lead on pc (with battery removed) red led comes on any ideas appreciated

Problem indeed.... Firstly, I wish I could offer some constructive solutions, but afraid not.... it does sound like a worn battery, and maybe worth trying (or borrowing) another one to flash?
I take it as you refer to it as an 'Exec' that it is the O2 branded one? If it is, from my experience with the O2 technical support, they really don't have a clue. I would assume that they would send an exec straight to HTC for testing. It's a complete last resort, but if you were to tell them that your unit was dead and they were to take it in, they wouldn't be able to solve the problem before they sent it back to HTC. This is of course after you have clarified it's not just a dead battery cell.
Best of luck with the thread and hoping someone a bit more experienced can help.
So, let me get this straight, your universal does not turn on (and by turn on I mean that you see the familiar wm5 screen with your apps, etc.), no matter what have you done, and the only way to have the charging led on is by connecting it to USB port with the battery removed?
If this is the case, you might have a dead internal battery charging/power supply circuit, i have repaired some old Ipaqs with this failure, most of them failed due to a defective battery, easily recognized by overheating when the unit was placed in charge, usually the overheating increased slowly in time (months usually).
I don't want to be misunderstood, but all these devices have a way of turning of the LCD backlight, a long pressure on the on button does this, it can restores with the same long pressure, see if this is not your case.
If you have some electrical problem with your PDA you might take it to repair or you could try to do it yourself -if you're able to do it obviously-.
Anyway, try to get yourself another battery (you might ask for it to someone else with a uni), put it on and see.
I'm also assuming that you have tried to hard reset your device.
good luck

Look maybe this will give you some hope. Yesterday I took my Htc Typhon (smartphone) after a long time, the battery was die. I tried to charge via usb, and nothings happened, then I tried to use a usb charger and nothing happened neither. Finally I charged the battery alone on an universal battery charger and after 30 minutes my phone was alive again.
Hope it will help you!

This is something I've had happen in the past.
Try taking the battery out, and put it into a ziplock back, and place it in the freezer for a few hours. I know, I know, it sounds ridiculous. But sometimes, just sometimes, it will reactivate the cells, and you'll be able to charge it after that.
well done o2 uk
well as said before took my phone back to the O2 shop and sent it off to the service centre. The report came back that the main board US .not only did i get a new exec but But a new boxed one and a full set of all original parts !!

Bricked, perchance? - TyTN won't boot

Hey all,
Having served me faithfully for 18 months now, my TyTN has finally given up the ghost. It refuses outright to boot.
Not a splash screen, not a backlight, no response at all no matter how long I hold that power button down.
When I plug it into the mains it displays reddish on the right hand LED, having left it plugged in for a while it stops displaying even that until I unplug it and re-plug it.
I've tested the battery with a voltmeter and the power on the phone with a circuit checker, there's not broken circuitry and the battery certainly generates a current.
Though it's not TOO urgent, as I have a backup phone (Nokia 3220, ugh) unlocked and in use, and it's not TOO horrible as I was about to order a Touch Pro anyway, I'd like to keep it strictly unbricked either for sale or for backup.
Any thoughts on either:
1. What the problem is, I'm absolutely baffled.
2. How I might go about fixing it.
Thanks, Forlornity
If its only displaying a red LED when you plug it in that generally means that the power sensor has been confused or the battery isn't touching the contacts properly.
Are you using the supplied charger or a 3rd party one/usb connection. The usb and most 3rd party chargers don't deliver the right charge. If its underpowered it may not trip the charging sensor.
Try pushing the battery tightly against the contacts, I had a problem whereby the contacts had been pushed in so the battery didn't connect properly.
Clean the contacts with a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol (surgical spirits) to remove any corrosion. DON'T USE METHYLATED SPIRITS!!! It leaves a residue.
Thats all I can think of now.
Cheers...
Isopropyl you say?
It's a pity, I've actually got meths handy.
I'm using the stock charger, I suspect I might be suffering a RLOD, but none of the usual methods are working...
I'm gonna see if I can get hold of a charging dock for the battery from expansys or suchlike (unless anyone knows anywhere better?), see if that does the trick, if not, new battery, then if THAT fails I'll have no idea
Thanks for the tip on the isopropyl!

I have the same problem, and new battery didnt help! anyone got solution for this problem? I menage to charge battery with 2 wires, and phone starts, but it wont charge! i mean orange led is on, and it says CHARGING, but battery % is going down down until it reaches 0%!

CHARGING ISSUE - shouldi be worried?

I bought a second hand HD2, however it arrived with a third-party chinese battery. I contacted the seller who apologised and said that battery was a replacement because the original didn't hold a good charge, and he would send the original through the post. The battery however was fully charged so I flashed all the neccessary files and installed NAND Android (my reason for buying it in the first place), however today - the same day it arrived - I noticed that the orange charge light was going off, usually when the phone screen went off. This necessitated plugging the USB lead back in again, and within sometimes less than a minute the same problem would occur. I have checked the battery prongs, reset the the phone, changed USB settings etc and the problem persists.
Just wondered of I should be worried...I am unable to find an identical problem to this on the forums so I'm assuming it's not a ROM issue. I am currently using the Desire port from DFT.
Would a cheap Chinese battery demonstrate this sort of problem?
The seller says he never had an issue of charging the phone.
My next resort is to flash Windows Mobile back on, but I'm at work and a bit anxious so was hoping for someone with some experience to reassure me!
All USB syncing etc works fine...it is literally just charging that's the issue.
Maybe it's your USB that's faulty. I had a faulty usb that would go on and off sometimes too. However I don't see why the battery would affect the LED light, as the battery has to be connected to the phone for it to stay on, and so the battery can't be losing it's connection with the phone randomly, so it's either your usb cord, or the port.
Word of advice, don't let your phone lose power cuz of the faulty charging. I assume you know that MAGLDR doesn't let you charge the phone while off, so a dead battery in our case, is a dead phone. Happened to me once cuz of my usb, luckily there was still a small amount of charge left after i took the battery out and placed it back in.
It's definitely not the cable as I've used an official HTC charger with it which does exactly the same thing. I've also tried with a Samsung MicroUSB charger from my Galaxy S
Maybe it's the usb port then... That's the worst case scenario because you'd have to get the whole motherboard replaced...
However if in winmo you don't experience the problems, then it was just some software problems, so try a different radio and build, and see if they work.
Edit:
Or maybe it's the LED that's faulty. (never heard of such a situation but anything is possible) >.>
Does it still charge even if the LED is not orange/on?
Thing is though I can pretty much get it to stay charging if I don't let it lock and the screen go off? Could this still be a problem with the USB port? I'm getting worried now as I don't like the hassle of sending things back through eBay. I'm wondering if the seller bought a spare battery thinking it was just a battery problem and isn't telling the whole story. Foolishly I didn't test the device with Windows Mobile, I just went straight into flashing as I had put Android on my friend's HD2 the other day in exactly the same way...his is even an ex Virgin Mobile phone like this one. Needless to say, he is having no charging issues.
Dude dont worry , the problem is the battery ! i got two chinese battery ones and both cant charge with the phone, i have to use eksternal charger Dont worry the red and orange led flashes constantly when i try to charge it
Just buy a cheap charger from ebay , and buy a oem htc hd2 battery
Hi thanks for your reply. Mine doesn't flash red and orange though: the orange light comes on as normal and the phone reports it as charging, but after a while (seems to be when the phone goes to standby most of the time) the orange light turns off and the charging symbol disappears. If I unplug and replug again the light comes back on for a period. I've not tested thoroughly but I THINK it will stay charging when I leave the phone out of standby with the screen set to stay on for 30 minutes. I really HOPE it's a battery issue but it sounds slightly different to yours as mine does at least charge to a degree. I'm worried there's a blown capacitor somewhere on the logic board that's making the phone charge malfunction but obviously there's no way of testing until I get a new battery.
It concerns me that the seller said he had no charging problems...he must have been able to charge it somehow as the battery was full when it arrived...could I have burnt something out when flashing?!
Mine do charge to about 50 % and then it stops
Im 100 % sure its the battery becouse the battery has a circuitboard inside of it, and thats often messed up considering its made cheap in china . But test it with your friends hd2 original battery You can 2 see if the wet indicatior has been activated
the " white " paper next to the battery poles should be white and not pink, alltso where the skrewholes of the phone that should allso be white just to make sure your phone is not waterdamaget
I don't think flashing could have burnt something out. Overclocking and generating a lot of heat can burn something out though.
Didn't you receive the stock battery? Why not try it with that, and if the problem stilll persists then it might not be the battery. Either way, it will help you to test out the phone with a stock battery.
I tried it again after a few hours and it charged for a fair while before the light went off again.
I don't have the original battery as the seller has yet to mail it to me.
Does anyone else think it's worth me trying out a stock Windows Mobile ROM to see if it works? Might be that Android ROMs are less forgiving of cheap batteries with dodgy circuitry..
UPDATE
Ok so I've flashed Windows Mobile onto the device and wiped Magldr. The phone now alternates between a green and an amber light on the charging indicator. Looks like Windows Mobile won't charge it at all!
Does anyone know what this means?
I've checked for water damage in the areas mentioned and there is no sign.
Well your best bet is to send it in for repairs. But I'd suggest you test the phone out first with a stock battery.
Well I Only bought the phone yesterday so I certainly won't be paying for any repairs.
Got a replacement battery today - a genuine HTC one.
Plugged in, switched on....flashing between amber and green
I have a nagging suspicion this is going to be an eBay refund nightmare.
have you checked that the pins on the phone is not bendt? pins where battery poles connect to phone
problem solved? fingers crossed
OK so as a last resort I flashed radio 2.15 to the device. Seems that this has completely fixed the problem as without even restoring the phone is now charging properly. It seems that a corrupted radio flash had affected the charge somehow....at least I hope so.
The same problem has not come back again today at all.
Might be worth throwing this solution in a problems and solutions section as I haven't found any reference to it on the net and it might fix things for others panicking over their handsets.
That's nice.
Good for you, since it's a hassle to deal with sending back the device and shizz like that.
was just searching is anyone had a similar problem like me. to the OP yours sounds like my problem.
Had these fake OEM batteries for a while now. Until recently they have been charging ang turning off in 1 1/2 minutes. put a genuine OEM battery in and the problem is gone.
My solution was OEM can charge thru phone but fakes cant, use fakes as backup and charge it thru a desktop charger. goodluck
