How do I replace my lost JasJar? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Well, I'm officially an idiot....I left my JJ on the Eurostar on Sunday. And some lucky train sanitation agent has obviously seen it as a good opportunity to make a couple of quid (despite the offer of a reward )
Fortunately, apart from a couple of photos of Paris everything was backed up. I've managed to remote wipe it (Thanks to AKU2), and IIWPO is installed in the ROM (Thanks to XDA-Dev!!) so I'm waiting to see if my wife gets a text message that I can follow up on....
For now though, I've been relegated to using my trusty Tornado. (Although I keep finding myself prodding at the screen with a pencil in a vain attempt to recreate the happy days of PPC ownership....)
Anyway, my question is this:
I found the Universal to be pretty bulky. Not too bad, but I'd prefer something a bit smaller. My choices as I see them are:
1) Get a replacement Universal now and put up with the size.
2) Get a Fujitsu Siemens T830 in July and put up with a puny screen.
3) The HTC Hermes - pretty much exactly what I'm after, but God only knows how long I'll have to wait...and I'm impatient!
Any other sensible suggestions would be very welcome. Are there any other Universal replacements on the horizon that I may have missed?
Thanks!

I think I'm jumping ship to the Mio A701 tomorrow I want more toys (GPS), and can live without keyboard.
Hermes still seems an incremental improvement to me. Nice idea, but not quite what I'm after. And I think it looks a bit poo...
But then, I've still got my Universal, Magician and P900
V

I did consider the Mio. it looks nice and more toys are always good, but I use a lot of 'connected' functions so the lack of WiFi or 3G kills it for me. Looking at that device that led me to finding the T830...
If only the screen of the T830 wasn't so rubbish, I think this would be a no-brainer, but as it is I may stick with a Universal variant (and it's bulk) until something better comes along.
And the Hermes is pretty ugly, It's only a consideration over the T830 because (again) of the better screen. I think I've just been spoiled by the VGA lovliness of my dear departed JasJar, so I don't want to downgrade too far...

Fuji looks very nice. But screen is 240x240? Sigh...
I don't use my Universal much, but I really want a proper handheld with VGA. I'd go blind (it's hard enough to see on the Universal), but 240x240 is bad
Wifi isn't so bad for me, I've got a wifi card. 3G - useful, but I don't use it in the UK really. Does the Benq have a qvga screen? It's old skool, but if screen space is a priority...

Well if i were you i would stuck with the universal, because there isn't another similar phone/pocket pc with the same specs and a VGA screen ! I bought one because it was the only one with the darn VGA screen !!
It only the Atom had a VGA screen... ohh well !!!

He probably also wants something he can actually buy.

I'll be able to live without a VGA screen. Just not sure I want to go as lo-fi as 240x240. Mainly because of software compatibility problems...WM5 has precious little decent software already, without complicating matters further.
If the T830 was QVGA it'd be perfect (well...close enough to perfect!). I think I need to do some research on the problems with square screens, then I'll decide on whether to wait for the T830, or just get another Uni.
Thanks though, I do at least know that I haven't forgotten anything. You wait, when they start releasing Ultraportable PC's with built in 3G and voice capabilities, I'm really going to struggle...!

What about:
Advance TC M.A.G.I.C.?
How about a list of what you REALLY want to be there (at least)

All I want is a PPC with:
-AKU2 (for Push-Mail and A2DP)
-3G and WiFi (for decent connection speeds)
The most important NON-essential features are:
-Keyboard
-QVGA screen (or better)
-GPS
Obviously, I'd appreciate anything over and above that, so the more bolt-ons the better. And yes, something that I have a chance of buying in the UK within the next couple of months would be good.
I realise that limits me to roughly one device that's currently available, but the T830 is on it's way, the Hermes is possibly on it's way, Shame the Trinity will take about a million years to surface (if ever).

Get a Universal NOW or wait ?

Hello people. I hope you can help me here!
I'm from the UK. I've been looking for a PDA/phone for AAGES. The closest 'ideal' is the HTC Universal, or more specifically, the O2 XDA Exec.
I require VGA, WiFi, Fast CPU, headphone jack, Bluetooth, GSM/UTMS, WM5.0, SD/mini, etc. Basically, everything that the Universal has. I intend to use it as a phone, web browser, audio/video player and games.
HOWEVER, the thing thats stopping me buying is... well, two things. Firstly, its the SIZE. I've held it and tried it in my jeans pocket. My friends look at me weird. It's massive.
Secondly - its been out for a while now. I'm worried something new is around the corner. The closest match i can see is the HERMES. However, lacks the 640x480, headphone jack and has micro SD.
I would definitely appreciate some help in this sticky situation.
Regards.
Kev.

Man, I wish...
No seriously. If you want VGA, options are virtually nonexistent I think.
V
Get it now.
Reason: While the successor to the current Universal will offer true VGA and much more (also probably running WM6.0), it could be as much as a year's wait. It still offers more than current and foreseeable future options in many aspects.
I don't think that this Willcom es is going to be anything great, the specs did not boast anything to make my jaw drop.
Hiya!
when it comes to electronics, theres ALWAYS something around the corner!
While we all like to have the latest gizmo's and gadgets, I prefer to buy my items after the initial furore dies down. The last Xbox 360, forthcoming PS3, the PSP, various PDA's, PCs, LCD tellys etc etc have new designs and features every few months. If you waited for the next best thing you'd never buy anything at all !!
The universal is quite large, however, I 'usually' find it's users who are stepping up a little from having normal mobile phones and testing out PDA's who say this.
Because were' all so used to having much smaller phones, carrying and seeing the exec makes it look like a brick!
The Xda Mini S (and it's other names) is a good alternative for people like this - the Exec seems to be for more experienced and/or power users mainly.
Just so happens I have a brand new '4 week old' Exec for sale!!!
Cheers! Dennis! West London UK!!

Yeah they things look freakin awesome, I would get one if it wasn't for the lack of WiFi- I mean like why have a QWERTY keyboard and VGA screen if you can't go online with WiFi?
What are the names of the known devices that are to come out in the next year or so with similar or greater specs than the Exec/M5000?
I basically want to know what I can look forward to....
No one knows about a VGA replacement.
Surur
get it.
i'm still somehwat new to all this and got alot of advice before diving in and buying mine. i pretty much live by it now. really, the size factor is more a current perception of what is too big. i don't even notice mine anymore. it may seem an eye sore at first, but large screen it well worth it - like a little tv. really not all that big. i see people with nintendo sidekicks and such which is just as big. keyboard though no laptop, can really get you buy for majority of mobile computing. nothing overall had as many features either. it does everythign i need.....and i got my off ebay for around $600.
The prices of second-hand HTC Universal are falling now, so have a look on ebay (I got my refurbished unit for 240 pounds!). Then it should last till whenever the next VGA replacement comes out.
Yeah, you can now get a secondhand Universal from a relatively well-known chain for £300 with a 12 month guarantee if you're in the UK (which I prefer to do, rather than risking the whole ebay thing).
If you're lucky it'll be in mint condition, but in any case it won't be too battered and you have peace of mind for a year. That's how I've replaced my lost JasJar with a nearly-new Exec, anyway.
Back to the original post, I seriously considered waiting for the FS T830, despite it's puny screen but decided against it mainly 'cause I'd rather be stuck in the middle of nowhere watching movies on my VGA screen, than using GPS to find my destination with a 240 x 240 pixel eye-strainer.
Nothing else really on the horizon. The Hermes looks nice, but it'll be practically the same price as the Universal, and of the two I'd rather have the Uni. Of course, next summer there'll be all sorts of competition, but who wants to wait 12 months....?

LOL agree. But then wouldn't watching "Lost" make you feel nervous?
The T830 looks rather thick too. But hey, that's what everyone says about the Universal.
And what shops sell second-hand gadgets? I know you can sometimes get refurbished items from shops like PC World (who don't sell phones, I believe) but they are rare and are often battered.

Performance gains with TyTn

The HTC TyTn (Orange M3100) will have a 400 Mhz processor. Does this mean that the whole system will operate considerably faster than the Wizard / Prophet, or is the 200 Mhz leap not as massive as it appears (different processor manufacturers)?
I love my Wizard, but it is quite sluggish sometimes and that really is my only criticism. (When sliding the keyboard, the rotating of the screen is really lethargic.)
Cheers
It all depends. I'm not sure on the processor in the Hermes, but it will make a major difference if its a dual-core design like the Wizard running at 400 Mhz versus a single core.
I trust HTC, and its definitely a worthy successor to the Wizard.
Hopefully there will be a way to overclock the Hermes, if it does run a bit poky.
Got my Tytn!
Hey Folks!
On the last weekend, I 've got my Tytn! In Germany it's the O2 Trion. My father has the Wizard and I have to say, that the Tytn is up to 4 times faster then the Wizard.
The 400 Mhz Samsung Prozessor is the fastest Prozessor I 've ever seen on a Windows Mobile Phone!

Well, it's kind a hard to explain. Because you know, the first days you will use the device a little bit more as usual. The Battery has lost 45 % of Power after 3 days with factory charge. And I don't have a Storagecard yet. I don't use Direct Push, but use the WLAN module with full power. I also took some pictures with 2 MPixel. HTC has still not the quality of Nokia Phone Cameras but a Macro function integrated.
I only have one Problem so far. The Tytn loses the display calibration 3 times a day.
expansys has a completely different unit! I like the unwired picture best cosmetics of the Tytn so far me thinks....[/quote]
xdaer/Facedanzr: I was at the Modaco meeting. I have to say, the Hermes (or "Herpes" as it was lovingly called by everyone) is a great device - better build quality and feels more compact then the Wizard, but great spec, nice keyboard, wifi etc, 3G - squeeze in a VGA screen and it'd be pretty much perfect. It felt "adequately" fast to me; faster then the Wizard certainly, but I use a Mio A701 and Magician, so I'm used to fast.
A nice device, it'll do very well I'm sure.
However, I have to say, the Samsung was an amazing beast

fyi.. this is NOT the TyTN.. this is the O2 Xion XDA.
Same stuff under the hood yes.. but different casing and the keyboard is german, not english style.
Mario could you tell us how low UMTS signal is?
hmmm... at least AKU2.2. Note the clock in the title bar (its not AKU1 btw because this phone is advertised as being Direct Push capable). Could you give us a quick screenshot of the version tab in settings/about please? Also, what are your IPL/SPL revision numbers?
I bored of taking some pictures again!
But I can say, that I have the Aku 2.3 on my device. So says the Device Info in the Settings Menu!
@El_Mar1ach1
What do you meen with "how low UMTS signal is"? It depends on the location. Sometimes I have 3 bars and sometimes I don't have any UMTS Signal!
Maybe I can tell you on September what signal strength I have in Italy on Vodaphone, when I visit my italian aunt!
I'm jealous too... i'm gonna grab one probably in mid august. i like the HERM200 more than the HERM100(pictured in previous) and of what i know so far cingulars gonna be carrying the HERM100 so that means i have to start getting ready to fork over $900 for this beast!

If you hate your universal or if you wanna buy one...

If you hate it :
I've bought myself a NOKIA E61 few days ago and I can say : no Windows Mobile powered phone, including Universal, is even in the same league as E61!!!
If you're fed up with a size and weight of an universal, if you want a RELIABLE and excellent working 3G/Wi-Fi enabled smartphone then look no further.
I was using Windows powered PDA/Phones and smartphones for last few years and now I still can't get used to not having to soft reset my phone AT ALL, that the battery lasts THREE DAYS, that it doesn't hangs up with no reason, that IT JUST WORKS the way it should with brilliant reception and call sound quality.

Mine is for sale
Used, boxed with all accessories, factory unlocked, Windows Mobile 6 installed and running
plus brand new spare battery
plus 4GB Mini SD card with SD adaptor !!
COLLECTION ONLY IN LONDON!!!
Please PM me with your price offers.
Wait few more days or weeks and You ll see how reliable E61 is. My friend bought it few months ago and he have problems with it - mainly with not answered calls and signal drops during conversations. I ve checked many different mobile platforms - standard Symbian, UIQ, pocket pc and palmos treos.
All of them have their own problems. And I always considered windows as the most unstable platform but it really turns out theres no difference. Even few days ago We spoke with my friend about his nokia comm. 9500 and problems he have with this phone.
Seriously - I think those devices are too complicated for now to be absolutely flawless. Such a geeks like us can play with them, upgrade rom countless times etc . but if You need something strud buy normal, simple phone.
In fact I am also tired of endless small problems in my Universal and I am considering to exchange it with IE Motorola K1. Of course I am not completly out of mind and want to buy additionall Fujitsu P1610 as a "neccesarry" addition.
Best regards,
Piotr
I like Symbian phones, but as phones, for PDA devices you still can't beat Windows Mobile.
It's comparing a bicycle to a car, yes, for short distances, they are both good, and in city areas a bike will get you there faster and cheaper, but there are some things you just can't, or at least wouldn't want to do on a bike.
Every device has it's place, if you're so happy with the E61, I would suggest you were using the wrong device for your needs for a long time, rather than the PocketPC's not being very good.

how true... how true... I've had an HP h6315, and now an iMate JasJar... Ever since the HP, I can't get along with an "untouchable" screen! I even put my fingers on my friends Sony Ericssons' screen before I say "sorry for the fingerprint, man, I though I was a touchscreen" ;-)

As I could tell, the only thing that is a step back from the Uni is:
Smaller screen
No GPS (although there's an inline headphone GPS version, from what I can tell, without replaceable headset)
Memory Stick =/
However, it does have features that set it apart from the Uni:
800x480 VGA screen. Widescreen, not 4x3 like the Uni's 640x480 display.
Slider (not clamshell). This depends on your preference, but for me I like to see who's calling without having to open the phone up
Optical joystick - this is really awesome. You just slide your finger on it and it guides and onscreen pointer. I've gotta see this.
Headsets have an inline media control accessory. I haven't really found one that works with the Uni.
Camera is 3.2 mp.
Bluetooth 2.0/ADCP by default. Assuming this won't be buggy.
Wifi G - nuff said.
Assuming better battery life.
Smaller. I guess this could be a benefit depending on your opinion on the size of the Uni.
No wonder Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 is so good: HTC makes it
please be advised there is some posts about sonyericsson x1 on off topic thread and ,.....
and i think you should to know: this device will be MANUFACTURED by HTC
the X1 is all HTC-built
http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/no-wonder-sony-ericssons-xperia-x1-is-so-good-htc-makes-it/
it seems there is no further than HTC
It also has a-GPS
I think it looks the dogs danglies, I don't care who makes it. Just look at that screen (dribble dribble)
That damned Sony Memory Stick is the only thing holding it back (I so hate Sony's proprietary garbage). But if it lives up to its promises...I guess that'll be forgiveable!
Hi,
we heard it through the grapevine that the X1 is all HTC-built....
This is what engadget wrote . But i also think it is true. All these htc devices all around....
I think HTC is some kind of reference for the mobile market.
Although some things very crappy in the past
So from my point of view the X1 is really nice device. I noticed it a few days before and of course there's GPS inside.
Although the sliding mechanism looks very comfortable.
The Uni is very universal but in fact it is too big, to use it as a real phone or take it everywhere anytime. At least this is what i do at the moment
The Kaiser is also a good mixture for an everyday device
Maybe the X1 will do it even a bit more better.
But first let's rip off the memory stick interface and integrate SD cards....
scholbert
Sony does make some damn fine electronics, but their customer support is lousy. But the phone looks good, memory sticks suck and the last I checked don't have anything over 4GIGS the touch interface looks neat, and if the keyboard is anything like my old UX then it will be a great keyboard my only concern will be Sony's support of the product.
So basically it is the same thing as the Toshiba except for the video call is that correct?
GSM arena has it with a micro SD slot so it will be interexting to see what it actually has when its released. I like the security of the Clamshell design of the Uni but i might be drawn away by the X1 if its all that it states....

If Sony is reading this I hope to god they:
Use STANDARD SD size so we can store large amounts of data, to be comperable to iPhone
Include GPS so we can use tracking apps that are becoming commonplace
Both pdadb.net confirms the microSD and Sony's own site confirms the GPS

I think that's it. Thoughts? I, for one, certainly welcome the more capacious battery and higher screen resolution (though that's hardly a big deal on such a small screen). I'm a bit bummed that they didn't use this opportunity to make the screen a bit larger, and include directional keys.
Quite disappointed actually - what is this? A facelift?
This could have been a serious opportunity for Motorola to really create a "grim reaper" for the new Blackberry - and they are just giving it away with something that is already out-dated before its even out! No dual-core cpu? No front-facing camera? Only a VGA screen?? I mean come on .. once in a time, Droids were top of the line Android devices with the latest tech and now Moto just seems to retreat and leave that job to Samsung and LG ... Oh and something else, it doesnt look half as attractive and cheeky as the original Pro ... just my 2 cents ..
No front camera + no screen size increase = FAIL.
I mean come on, how hard is it to make that screen a 3.5 inch? Or at least a 3.3?
I just wish I could get it here in the US. I really don't want to go to Verizon just to get this style of phone.

I've read in several places that it's anticipated to come to the US as well. It evidently has support for both AT&T and T-Mobile: http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/08/30/motorola.pro.plus.unveiled/
Even if it doesn't get an official release in the US, it should be fairly easy to get an unlocked one from overseas.
The phone is definitely a disappointment for me. I love my Pro, and I was looking forward to some sort of significant bump up. Oh well, I guess I'll start looking elsewhere.
Great. I want the better resolution. My BB 9780 had SUCH a glorious screen, the Droid Pro aint bad, but it aint stellar either. Can't wait for this to come out.
Getting my MOTOROLA PRO+ (AKA: MB632, "Elway Plus", apparently...), on Monday, from the UK... Very disappointed to see that there is very little (practically nothing), about said device - and even about its predecessor the DROID PRO - but yet other "not-so-good" (but similar in a way) devices (ie: Samsung Cha-Cha), do even have custom ROMs available at this stage!
This is a very good device (on paper at the moment, I will find out more in 48h when I finally have it) but for those of us that want a "bar" type, qwerty keyboarded, Android smartphone, for mostly emails, texting, calls (obviously) and - most important (at least as far as Im concerned): one of the best battery lives amongst all Android devices! - this is a dream! ...but of course if you are one of them people who use their smartphones more like a tablet (movies, games, music, etc.) than a phone, then this device is not for you...
MOTOROLA PRO+ "Temp Forum"
Im hoping not to be contravening any rules here but since there is barely any info on the MOTOROLA PRO+ at the moment (not much info either on its predecessor MOTOROLA (DROID) PRO), I though all little bits of infor around (I have posted a few things in different places) could be gathered in one place - HERE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19973225#post19973225 ...at least until when (and if) a dedicated section is created for this device...

everyone should go to: Link and vote +1 for a separate Motorola Pro+ Forum
I just got mine ordered and should be here soon. I'm actually excited. I've been using blackberries for 5 years and selling phones for just about the same length of time. I switched to android but after a year I still find typing to still be a pain and a blackberry just can't be fully replaced due to their amazing keyboards. All keyboard android alternatives are horrible. After reading all the reviews this phone sounds exactly like a perfect combination of android meets blackberry.
