Hello, i just received a used xda exec, to me is in excellent condition but the screen is just kinda lose so i was wondering if is should be like that or it should not be lose. Thanks,

They do go a little loose after a while but they can be tightened again... I believe there's a thread on the board discussing it somewhere Search is your friend!

It certainly is. Sadly using reasonable means 'tightening' the hinge simply isn't possible so just live with it, sell the phone or send it back for a warranty fix.

The short answer is - you can't
The long answer: the screws you can see hold the LCD casing to the hinge, the 'tightness' is controlled by the pivot itself. There is a convex washer in the pivot pushing one section against the other. At rest fully open or closed, this is bowed, and when the hinge is halfway opened it compresses.
Your washer has become slackened and is no longer pushing the two parts together as hard as it did. You can strip the unit and try bending the washer back but it's tightly affixed to the pivot post, or you could replace the hinge - I have spares - but do you really want to void your warranty unless you need to?

It is possible..but one has to remove the pivot mechanism fully and tighten it.Removing the pivot mehanism is risky, as one may lose the connectivity of external call buttons..but it is possible

No, it isn't. You can't 'tighten' it - read my post above! It's a bowed washer that needs bending - nothing to 'tighten'. If you'd had one in bit's you'd know as there is 'no risk of losing connectivitiy of external call buttons' unless you are ham fisted and cut the cable which is your own fault...
Rimoving the pivot mechanism is NOT risky if you are careful. It's awkward, but not risky. Removing the washer to bend it further to 'tighten' the pivot could be risky as from the looks of it you won't get it back together again.

I just took my universal apart today.......literally!!!!!
I managed to fix my hinge successfully as well, now it no longer squeaks and rattles!!! Am I happy or what.....you bet I am! ;-)
believe me guys, its fairly easy to open it up and fix things! Just feel confident and don't frce anything, and you should be able to make your way thru!
Will post some pictures later on!

I suppose to fix the screen wobbling problem you neet to fasten the 6 screws on the bottom part of the screen? It's been wobbling a bit, not anything serious but I'd rather fix it it I am able to.

What did you have to do for that? I suppose more than just tightening those screws visible near the hinge, because you had to take it apart... :?:

the screen shake mainly comes from the two metal "tubes" which protrude from the top display. To make things lucid, its the tubes "onto" which the two small plastic covers with the LED indicators ride into and get screwed into the bottom base.
The problem arises when the metal tubes tend to get compressed (deformed?) due to constant opening of the lid. So all you need to do is, use a set of pliers or something to bulge it back outwards, and it should be nice and stiff once again!
The second contribution for screen shake is, the two small plastic pieces (with the led indicators) which are screwed to the base (keyboard blah!). The screws get loose, and you sometimes just need to tighten those...
For either of the two, you need to remove the mother board, display connectors, antenna, keyboard module to get to the part where you can dislodge the top unit...but believe me, its fairly simple and theres nothing to worry!
@Vijay
Do you have the service manual with you?????
I'd love to get a copy of that!!!
cheers!

Stylus went loose

My Stylus went loose and it does not stay in place. It will not extend when pulling it out.
Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks and regards
They have a thread on this on www.modaco.com. There is a newsgroup there for HTC Wizards as well.
My stylus is starting to loosen up a bit as well so I'm getting worried. Anyway, I found the thread at Modaco and here is the relevant info:
There are two 'standard' repairs for this..
1. Blu-tak inside the case to hold the stylus.
2. Some sellotape on the stylus to stop it sliding out (I use this one).
It's a common fault with the k-jam. Not seen cases up for sale anywhere, you would either need to get a repair or use one of the methods above.

EDIT: From what I can tell, sellotape is british for scotch tape and it's actually Blu-Tack, not Tak

Damn that sucks I thought those jewellers size screws would control the hinge tightness but your right they are obviously for the screen fastening.
bugger if the hinge becomes loose really is no alternative but to send her off to the shop.
Does that mean that the more you rotate it into the 2 positions, it will get more loose?
Does it take a very skillful technician to open it up, tighten it and put it back, or anyone from the Universal's local distributor's repair shop can do the job?
Honestly, I do not trust those guy's skill/knowledge on Universal, as many question/problems which I talk/email to them, no good answer can be provide by them or their HQ in Taiwan.
Do you have a picture of the parts?
Anyway, the kind of support for this expensive toy from HTC is really bad, I think there is enough complains on this website and other website as well.
I have solved my hinge loose problem.
1. Turn the screen to half way position, that is neither computer (landscape) nor pda (portrait) mode.
2. Tighten the screw (on the body, not on the screen) that can be seen in the half way position.
It is not shaking anymore.

I have already done this and am sorry to say that it will come loose again very quickly! It's a poorly designed hinge imho. If anyone has a more permanent fix then we will be glad to hear it.

How about wrapping it with adhesive tape. LOL (joke)
How about using some of that screw "goo", loctite I think it is called?
Which bit of the hinge mechanism are we saying is loose here? Is it the "lift" hinge that is loose so that when in computer (landscape) mode it has a tendancy to fall backwards as you use it or are we talkingabout the 'twist' rotational hinge to flip the screen around?
Cheers,
Steve
for me its the lift hinge thats slightly loose.
The "lift" hinge I am talking about.
The other hinge seems to be still ok now. Is clamshell open/close loose? Guess this will be difficult to fixed. Can share your experience?
BIG BALLS AND A STRONG DRINK DID THE TRICK!
well i got mine back to new stiffness. How I did it you may ask...well, it took alot of BALLS and a good strong drink. I used the manual from on this board and stripped the device down to bone...bent the metal palte concave to get a better grip on the left right rotations and added tape on the cylinder shafts for the up/down stiffness...I even added a ball of glue in the housing to keep the pointer in secure...took my time and got good results...It is possible but it's alot of work!

How to disassemble without voiding warranty

Hi All.
I just received the faulty part in my Trinity from cnn.cn. it's the keypad panel which doesn't work that well on my device anymore.
http://cnn.cn/shop/p3600dopod-d810-keypad-p-1825.html
Now, I read the excellent tutorial on how to disassemble the Trinity, but I'm worried about the Warranty sticker found on one of the screw hole.
the question is - is there a way to replace this part without unscrewing that specific screw?? Is there any way to avoid voiding my warranty??
thanks in advance

jus slip a very thin blade or knife between the sticker and plastic, keep pushin the sharper egde of the blade between them as centred as possible. without movin the blade up or down. and it wil come off. i easily removed my void label. and put it back. muahahaha.
can you point me to the guide for disassmbly please? I took mine apart but couldn't get the last screen connector cable off.
I'm a bit of an expert at removing tamper resistant stickers, but this one would not play ball.
Usually the trick is to warm them or shear them rather than pull, but this pretty much disintegrated when I looked at it ;-)
Just one point - if it's under warranty why are you fixing a faulty part?

Here's the tutorial:

Regarding your question - sending my device which was bought abroad would cost me much more than the piece+shipping (15$), not to mention the entire weeks I'll be without my device. So I think it's worth the "risk"
nope man! the sticker is not sticky at all....even the stickies on this forum are much stickier than the void label
thanks for putting the link up for Dimantos guide! I've been trying to find it for ages.
The part I get stuck at it removing the screen connector (Red arrow).
I just can't work out what to lift up - it seems like something might break.....

Hi my friend.
What you have to lift up (using tool No2) is the black lever so that the cable ribbon can slip out of the plug. What you have to be careful with is not to accidentally cut the cable ribbon.
I hope its clear now.
Best regards!
Nice Tutorial
First of all i'd like to thank for this great tutorial. Just followed it and managed to disassemble trinity without breaking anything.
Just wondering if you guys know where to buy the nuts where the screws fasten on the front cover (those little golden pieces, inside the plastic). Bought a black cover from ebay that doesn't have that, so i cannot fasten the screws to reassemble
Thanks in advance

Desire HD GPS Fix

After having no GPS for about a year and getting annoyed with it not working I accidentally found a post about soldering wire to the contacts.
Well, rather than soldering I wondered if I could make a little tin foil antenna. Works a treat!! Pics below:
Nice

Seems like a great idea,, much easier than soldering,,,, did you sandwich the foil between two pieces of paper ,, was it easy to clip it back together with this mod.
Very tempted to try it.
hi,im struggling with enanche GPS signal too. just two questions..is it just aluminium foil ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/12/Folie_2007.jpg ) or some other foil? and behind,is a piece of paper to cover motherboard contacts?

Any conducting foil should be good enough if you ask me. But look at other threads - about resistance/lenght of the antenna etc. - this one is quite a guess, but should be better than not having antenna at all. By the way, if you have broken antenna (the cover), you could apply this patch to the cover leaving the spring contacts to do the resto fo the job.
And more... A new cover (antenna) on eBay is about 6 pounds? (10 euros?) - is it worth of making this by yourself when you can get a new cover?

Template
Is it possible that you could upload a folding and cutting template? Also, (and I believe it was mentioned a bit back) it appears that you have a piece of paper behind the foil to prevent accidental contact with the board other than on the antenna points. Would something like this also work on the other antenna points?
Nice idea .. but i am afraid of shorting motherboard contacts... Perhaps any more detail from you in the long run would be appreciated...
Also my spring contact broke as soon as i tried to pull it up. so may be soldering a wire would fix my GPS!!!
Tried this. It helped a little but couldnt get a good connection and as soon as i moved the phone it would go
probably try to soldier a wire onto it

Damn, sorry I missed all the replies!!!
So to make the template I used a craft knife and a board and trial and error cut the paper until it fitted correctly, once I have that done I used that as a template to make the foil.
I used the paper to prevent the foil from touching the motherboard. Its just regular kitchen foil.
To remove the cover I CAREFULLY used a razor blade to lift the side of the cover closest to the camera, its very tight the first time you try and open it, once it been off a couple of times its really easy to do.
To update this methods results, I found it worked for a while but then I started having GRP issues again. I was going to solder a wire in the instead but was due a upgrade so ... HOX ftw.
Soldering a wire in there would be pretty easy using a fine tip on a gas soldering iron, may be a bit more fiddly with a regular fixed bit electric iron but certainly doable. This would be a better fix, though have a look on fleaBay, it may be worth trying a new GPS cover ... I'm certain the issue lies with a really ****ty connection between the motherboard pins and the antenna points on the back of the cover and nothing else.
Sorry again for the slow replies guys, I posted and set for notifications and then forgot about it, was only by chance I found the notifs in my spam folder.

EDIT: Please dont jump into conclusions too soon as I did! At first I thought tha this fix was working 100% but I then noticed that although I (at last) had a signal it was too weak compared to a 'healthy' gps receiver and the phone lost it as soon as i got in a moving car or changed direction.
I used tinfoil from my kitchen, plain printer paper, a pair of scissors and a cheap modeling knife. I used the 'trial and error' method just like you said and cut out the paper for insulation first. I trimmed holes for the two flash leds and the strange circular part right next to them.. I then cut the tin foil a tad larger than the papers area and I folded its edges all around to keep it from falling apart.
Congratulations for thinking so cleverly. Thank you for uploading and sharing this fix.

EDIT: My spring contact also broke apart but it seems to have little on this fix. If the tinfoil has enough width then it should lie correctly on what remains of the broken spring on the main board. The problem is that after a few days the tinfoil looses some of its width due to continuous stress that we apply on the phone (while holding it or having it in our pockets) and thus loosing contact
