Whats with WM5 PIE ( Pocket Internet Explorer ) ? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Sometimes when I type in a http address say www.bigcharts.com
PIE opens the link and starts loading in the web page, and before the download worm completes, PIE shuts down, removed from my running programs list.
The Data connection looks fine as other applications are working. It seams PIE only works with a very strong data connection, if its on the low side (2 bars strength) it is dodgy.
Can you shed some light on this, of advise a fix or other application solution.

Internet Explorer (and Skype) Disappear when connecting...

Anyone seen this?
On my Qtek 9000 Internet Explorer disappears (processes vanishes) every time as it connects to any remote internet site (opening a local file it is ok)
It happens over GPRS, WiFi or ActiveSync connection.
Not sure when it started happening, but it was in the last few days.
All other Internet apps (email, nPop, pRSSReader) are ok except for Skype when you go to the 'connected' page to see contacts - but I think that's also using IE anyway (Skype was installed and working before this problem occured).
I was using Netfront until the demo expirered, but it seems to completely 'freeze' for approx 15 seconds every minute or two, so I'm not to keen to register it.
-Steve
PS If anyone saw my post back in the beginning of January, I finally got the Qtek back from repair - after nearly 4 months! New motherboard was needed, and other than this problem it's great

Fixed it (after seeing the thread on phone not ringing on closed).
Removed the System hack in Tweaks2K that fixes the cache size 2Mb, and soft reset. Everything's ok now.

FTP reconnecting

Hi,
I have wriiten an application that FTP's data after connecting via GPRS. The problem is somtimes whilst I am uploading a large file say approx 200KB then I notice the GPRS (big G icon) and the reception bars refresh (they disappear and i get a little cross where the G is and then the reception bars reappear). Soon as this happens I cannot continue to upload the file. What I think is happening is the GPRS is refreshing and as a result i am losing my connection to the FTP server. There is not a set pattern when the connection refreshes, somtimes i have uploaded 80KB other times 30KB of the file. I am using a WM5 HTC panda device.
Any help much appreciated.

Pocket IE connection issue

About once a day my IE refuses to load pages. It will do the Locating... bit and then load a white page with no errors. The only way I can get it to start working again is to either edit my AT&T MEdia Net connection and save without making changes, or bounce in and out of flight mode. Then I get the 'connecting to MEdia Net' dialog and all is fine. Has anyone else seen this? None of my other network enabled apps behave like this.

I have a few questions.. and problems

I was wondering if anyone has some help for these issues:
1. WiFi is very slow. I have my laptop open and using my wifi. The router is 6 feet away and I have a very fast connection. My X1 is also open next to me and I am using Opera 9.5. Yet the web pages load in about 1/4 the time compared to my lap-top. This situation was the same for Internet Explorer and the pre-installed Opera browser so I am sure this is not an issue of Opera 9.5.
2. I installed Opera 9.5 a couple of days ago. I can use the program reasonably well, however every 30min or so the program will not start correctly. In the Windows Bar I see as URL, but the browser does not start. The only way is to re-install it - so I am now doing this every time I need it.
3. When phoning the screen goes blank. A real pain when I need to use number keys to navigate my voice mail.. How can I tell the phone to keep the screen on? I have changed the setting which blanks the screen after a while to 30mins so this is not the setting..
4. How can I tell the phone to NEVER use GSM for data..? I do not want to pay the high data rate that Vodafone charges. I want to use my WiFi for all data transactions. I know the phone is supposed to use WiFi by default.. but I do not think it always does so. Also, when the WiFi has not been activated it automatically activates GSM data packages (GPRS etc.). In Symbian you can set this.
Many thanks!
Thomas
rendering webpages is not just a matter of internet speed
os cpu and mem are factors too
a thing where your pda will have a hard time keeping up with your laptop
a arm 500Mhz is nowhere near as fast as an old 500Mhz p3
about 4
then
settings-connections-connections-advanced-select network and choose
my network in both dropdownbox's

You're comparing web rendering on a mobile device with a laptop... of course it's slow, not the wifi but the rendering.

Opera 9.5 is in beta phase, so it's normal it has glitches.

I prefer this way, so you can't press any button with your face accidentally.
If you need to input some command, just turn on the phone and you're done.

Search for the app called NoDATA to disable your connections.
Thanks guys for your comments.. I think they are all valid.. however..
1. The slow web site rendering makes sense, however the rendering is in my opinion slower than it should be. On my laptop the speed of loading a web site seems to be limited by my internet connection. When move away from the router the speed slows down and pages load slower. On my cell phone the bottle neck seems to be the rendering of the pages and not the internet connection. It would be curious if there is some way to test if the speed of the processor really is the limiting factor. Is there some way to slow down winXP to the speed of the X1 and see if rendering speed is about the same..?
2. Indeed Opera 9.5 is in Beta so bugs are to be expected. I am just curious if this is a bug that others have seen.
3. Fair comment.. I suspect that ear-lobe navigation will never take off. It should however be my choice and a setting I think? Having to turn the phone on each time meant that I had to do so 25 times last time I check my voice mail.. real slow..
4. Ok. But I want to have data enabled, but only for WiFi.. The phone seems to turn "Data" back on without my consent and then picks either GSM or WiFi for data. I do not have the control to stop GSM being used. If WiFi is not available it defaults to GSM. The comms manager is not powerful enough. Is there another manager I can use?

NoData doesn't touch Wifi. Also the other suggestion about changing the selection in Connections should work (although using Live Messenger on a Vodafone ROM will only work over Vodafones GPRS).
artesea - you are a hero - thanks!
1.
you can try and turn on internet information server and add a local website to test speed diff
you can try to connect the x1 using usb to your computer and see if there is any speed diff compared to wifi
you can also try out the wm emulators for windows (not sure if those also emulate the correct speeds of the wm device though)

Pre installed Opera 9.5 Build 2682 connection problems.

Hi, I am new to this forum and am having a few problems with the Opera browser that comes pre-installed on the Touch HD (9,5 Build 2682).
I have tried searching the forum but can not find any reference to the problem I am having.
Quite often the browser will not load any page. The green progress bar at the bottom starts to move then just sits there and the page is not loaded. (Every other data application will work so its not a data connection problem)
If I soft reset it will browse ok again.
Another problem is that when I connect via wifi, the browser seems to not use the wifi connection. When I search on Google for my ip address it returns a 212 address which belongs to Vodafone (my network). If I then open IE and do the same I get the correct IP of my dsl. I have tried this on a number of wifi points. This problem also shows up when I browse to the BBC iplayer web site as it will display “please connect via wifi” when the wifi is connected.
I have on a few random occasions streamed the iplayer material ok so, I assume it was then connected to the wifi ok, but most of the time it will say “please connect to wifi”
I tried installing the latest Opera from their web site (9.51b2). It shows up in the programs folder as Opera 9.5 Beta. This seemed to work ok on both GPRS and wifi, the first time I run it, but then after running the factory installed version it does the same thing and some times crashes and will no rerun until after a soft reset.
It is possible that having both versions is causing problems but I don’t see any way of removing the pre installed version as it does not show up in the “installed programs” list?
Anybody else get these problems?
Thanks
Regards
Jason
Further to the above, I have found that the only way to get the Opera browser to definately use the wifi is to turn the radio part of the phone off so there is no GPRS data connection.
If I just turn the wifi on the browser almost always ignores it and still connects via the GPRS data connection, then when I turn the wifi off again the browser will then sometimes fail to load any page until a soft reset.
I do not have any of these problems with I.E or Opera Mini but they are no way as good as the full Opera 9.5
Is anybody else having these problems with Opera or is it just me?
(P.S a colleague of mine has just installed the latest Opera version from their website on an old Vario and it did the same thing with wifi connected, ignored it and connected via the GPRS data connection. Does Opera have a big problem here?)
I have no problems with wifi access (it works ok), but I have experienced that Opera hangs while loading over the data connection (regardless G,E,3G and HSDPA, it actually doesn't load anything).
The trick is when it happens to go to the opera menu (the one in the lower right corner with Settings, Downloads, Page info etc...) and choose Exit. You will need to confirm that action. Start Opera again and voila it works. So no soft resets anymore. And it has no connection with the Opera config - I tried default and my settings for numerous things in config and it still hangs.
IE works fine anytime, any connection - so that eliminates windows or data connection problems.
I use WkTask and close Opera by its little x - perhaps sometimes it doesn't close Opera properly after the successful surfing and on the next run opera hangs while loading. I think that before WKtask I didn't experience such problems. I haven't tested it without WKtask once I noticed this hang so I may be wrong about the good old WKtask. Perhaps Opera needs to be closed through its Exit function?
I hope this trick works for you - cheers!
Opera 9.5 versions thread
To easily find all opera 9.5 versions in a single place go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=486502
So you can choose the one that fits you
Thanks for the replies. I have sorted this problem now by flashing the rom with Duttys HD v1.9b XTREME.
This rom comes with opera version is 9.5 build 15613 which so far works as it should, uses wifi when its available and GPRS when its not. It also to date has not “got stuck” and failed to load a page (obviously when wifi or gprs is available)
(In fact the whole phone now works better with this rom but there are numerous threads already about this and how to flash!!)
Looks like build 2682 defiantly has a bug to me.

I think i've found the solution! Im using build 15613 so i don't know if this will work for the version that comes pre-installed. If it doesn't it's not hard to find build 15613.
In the TouchFLO interface:
Home / Settings / Communications / Settings / Wireless LAN / Power Mode tab / move slider to far left ( Best Performance )
I've tested it a few time and now opera uses wifi whenever it's available.
wifi works on some browser not with others
Hi All , I have a similar problem but mine is that when I use Opera browser it would use my wifi connection but if I use.. say Iris or Skyfire it uses my 3g data connection even though the wifi is still on. this is frustrating as data connection is expensive for me and I usually the wifi hotspots to do my surfing when I'm outdoors
any advice on how I can configure all browser to use wifi when available and only use data connection when its not available ... pls point me in the right direction on this, Im using stock ROM for HTC HD.
Cheers
