GPRS / EDGE - always "connected"?

I am using GPRS/ EDGE. Sometimes when I have NOT used any Internet program, the G or E icon become a pure square G or E only without the 2 arrows. Does it mean it has DISCONNTED the GPRS/EDGE? Now if I launch IE and click a URL, the E/G icon will flashing with a moving 2 arrows and eventually after 1 or 2 seconds, become a "square E/G icon with fixed 2 arrows".
I am wondering, shouldn't the GPRS/EDGE be ALWAYS connected, such that the "G/E icon with fixed 2 arrows" should always appear? What setting I should change in order to make my Xda neo perform that way?

1) The icons are interpreted as follows:
Solid G/E - GRPS / EDGE network present, but not connected.
Small G/E with moving arrows - connecting to network.
Small G/E with solid arrows - connected.
2) There is no point to keep GPRS\EDGE connected when no programs are using it, since that would only shorten battery life. If I am not mistaken the timeout on the connection cannot be changed from the device side. I know push mail function sends some data (I think 400 bytes every 120 sec) to keep the connection alive, but it kills the battery and racks up the phone bill (unless you have unlimited data).

But for me, "connecting GPRS/EDGE" is STILL costing some time (may be 1 to 2 seconds). so i am wondering if I can keep GPRS/EDGE connected all the time I want, so that whenever I want to check POP3 email / go to any website, then I don't need to wait the 1 to 2 seconds connection time. Now THAT'S would be my definition of "always on"

One or two seconds to establish a connection? How will you ever manage having to wait that long? :roll:

Check the various tweaks n tips floating about, there's always a couple that will force gprs to remain on at all times. The downside isn't battery life, it barely affects that or push mail wouldn't exist. It's that eventually you will lose the signal, the connection will die and you won't notice the difference until you try to use it. Then you have to either toggle flight mode or reset the phone...after you figure out what happened. If you're constantly having to connect to gprs, you may be better served by looking for a disconnect timeout. With that, it'll get the occasional chance to reset the connection, making sure it's active. I have no idea what they are offhand and don't use them but I've come across them in the past so try a search and check the wiki.

The downside isn't battery life, it barely affects that or push mail wouldn't exist.

Sorry, but I have to disagree.
Maybe if you manage to somehow keep the connection without transmitting anything (not sure this is possible) the battery drain will be minimal.
I am using push mail on my Jamin for only 3 days and the difference in battery drain is very noticeable. In fact even with no mail (I don't sync the rest) to transfer the battery life is cut almost in half.
I read an article where the same is reported for the universal.

i have a question about this related topic, i'm a noob, just got my mda on wed and i called them and added the data plan to my existing line, the guy said it would take about 72 hours for the browser to be surfing the web normally, well today is sunday and i still can't surf, my G icon on top is with arrows moving, and it shows i'm connected to EDGE but my browser only says Locating and never loads anything, please help?

Arrows moving means GPRS is trying to connect, but not actually connected.
There are two possibilities:
1) The provider hasn't connected you yet (72 hours??? When I bought a SIM from Orange I was surfing in 5 minutes)
2) Your connection settings are incorrect. You have to contact technical support for exact settings for your network.

Data Connection Problems?

Has anyone else had the problem that you go online and surf the web then maybe a couple of hours later you launch Opera again to go online and it just hangs (the data connection not opera)?
The only way to make it connect is to turn off the data connection then it will log back on...

yeh iv been getting that problem for sometime now, its frustrating, sometimes i even have to soft reset to get the data connection working. It shows that the data connection is fine and everything seems connected, but then when you try and update weather or browse the web (anything that uses data) you end up getting an error,
its very similar to the problem you get on your home broadband, your router shows its connected and your dsl and everything is active yet you get a white page on your browser and then you have to reset your router, very very frustrating, so i understand your problem exactly.

I'm wondering if this is anything to do with changing cells on your network?
When you travel to a different cell location although the network says you are still connected (and you can still send/receive calls) the data network has actually dropped and needs refreshing?
I suppose what we are after is a program that can refresh the data network every few mins - don't know if this is possible though?

Here in Germany o2 has a problem with the Qualcomm Chipset. I also have hanging connections. A workaround is to disable HSDPA. Maybe you have the same problem?

same problem here (also o2 Germany)
the 3G icon is there and the bubble says there is a connection for x minutes but opera or google maps mobile report a missing connection after a short time of usage. i have to kill the connection manually and after the connection is reestablished it works again for few minutes...... this is so frustrating...

GPRS
Same problem in Czech republic with O2 provider.
At this moment I found as a fastest way to switch off and on the radio.
I'm using most of the time GPRS connection and this problem is about two times per day so reconnection every day two times is really annoying.
Hopefully somebody will find solution soon...

My problem is slightly different. Sometimes (after using Opera or not) I try to refresh weather and it says "refreshing" but the data connection won't connect (it shows antenna, no arrows with H or 3G). I must then soft reset the PDA to make it work. Any solutions or similar experiences?

Blackstone data connection problems

Kam2kam, question, What rom are you using, and are you using activesync? If so, have you downloaded any email attachments? I was having the same problem where a couple of times a day I would have to soft reset. The connection would look fine, but if you tried to update anything or browse the net you were met with an error. It was frustrating. I finally narrowed the issue down to activesync and the new manila documents tab. My theory was that when I downloaded an attachment to view in the documents tab activesync would continue to sync the attachment each time it polled for new mail. Since activesync is often slow to sync attachments, my connection to the VPN would timeout before it could finish syncing causing the dreaded "waiting for network". My thought was my VPN connection would freeze thereby preventing my carrier internet from being able to connect; since, at least for me, you cannot have two different data session running simultaneously, i.e. VPN connection and the carrier's connection. The only cure was to soft reset. Ultimately what I did was hunt down any and all email attachments that I had dowloaded, and deleted them all. Since then my data connection went from freezing up twice a day to zero times a day and it's now been over two weeks.
You may not have the same set up as I do, but perhaps there may be something similar going on.

Data Connection goes bezerk/dead!

Hi everyone...
I have an odd problem with my ToucH HD data connection. Usually it happens by the end of the day.
When I arrive home, I disconnect HDSPA/3G and connect Wifi because my data plan comprises only 100Mb per month.
At the end of the night I disconnect Wifi and connect hSDPA/3G again, but the connection goes crazy.
Usually the weather widget still works (at first), but no other app that needs web connection. No Opera, no MSN, no mail... everything with connection error. Then even the weather widget too...
In the commManager the DataConnection is active and when i click on the H on top of the screen i can see that HSDPA is connected and there is a time counter... counting. I've even tried the "Connection wizard" (i suppose it's its name, since my TouchHD is in portuguese), then a soft-reset, but nothing. Is stays the same apparently connected, but no application being able to connect the internet. Just as if some communication layer that serves the applications had been disconnected from the HSDPA network.
The only way I have to "solve" this problem is by doing a restore of an image i created while the HSDPA connection was working. But I suppose having to do this at least once a day does not seem to be a good remedy, at least in my humble opinion.
Do you have any suggestions? I'm running the latest HTC official ROM for Europe, release Apri 7th.

a little confused on network connection

Hi, I'm a little confused and will try to explain.
Today I went to my provider shop and added a 2 month trial for surfing on the 3g (or edge, or whatever is available).
Now I see that sometimes "E" or "G" on the display and two arrows.
Then they dissapear and a little time later it's there again.
On the manual I see that it means downloading and uploading, but my browser is not active and I didn't make connection myself.
What I see is that since I added the trial, the "MMS and data" is checkmarked.
When I unmark it, the "E" or "G" network is no longer showing.
Now finally my question: am I (when it is marked) connected to the network, or only when I start the browser?
Or is one or more apps running in the background retrieving/sending data and so consuming my up or download?
Hope someone can explain a little.

as long as you see E (EDGE) or G (GPRS) you ARE connected on the network, but not necessarily are you downloading or uploading data. when the up and down arrows light up, data is being transferred to and from the phone. even if the browser is closed, data transfer can still occur since Android uses the internet to download information for e-mails, updates, and other info. you need to uncheck MMS & data if you want to completely turn off your data connection.

Guess the download limit would be reached without knowing and is also battery consuming.

hi. I have a problem about data connection (gprs) i have a mobile internet package and i can connect intermet everytime in a day and I sometimes downloading big files on internet. but when I downloading a file if I dont use internet the connection stops automaticly. my device not get sleep and it seems gprs connection on and working but downloading automatcly stops if I dont use it for different think but downloading... pls help my device garmin asus m10-- sory for my bad englsh cant speak well

I tried some programs like netspeed meter and if I test internet speed every minute the connection not get lost but I want to make my gprs con. always on.
can sb help?
