I have most of my programs on the SD card of my Exec. Any programs that are running are closed if the Exec is turned off and then back on. I even see this happen when reading ebooks if the Exec auto powers off and is then switched back on. Never had this problem with the XDA2!
I'm having trouble finding a solution or even obtaining much info about this problem but I gather than the Exec loses focus of the SD card after a power off and the running programs close. I've tried this registry hack but it doesn't seem to kake any difference:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\]
"PNPUnloadDelay"="8192" (originally set at 4096)
"PNPWaitIODelay"="8192" (originally set at 4096)
Anyone have any suggestions for a fix? I can't be the only one who finds it annoying having to restart programs every time their Exec is turned off and back on again.
Applications on SD closes after XDA EXEC is turned off
Has anyone face a similar issue as above? I have been trying to look for a solution for a long time but I can't seem to find much information to date.
I hope this is not an isolated issue by a few people. Appreciate anyone with information to give some advice on this.
I'm using XDA EXEC on the AKU2 rom
For me this problem sows up with windows media player, if I'm listening to music and pause it for 5 mins, the exec falls asleep !! when I wake it up again, it has forgotten what I was listening to
I even had the problem with MS Reader installed in the device memory - so not just a problem with apps on the SD card
Just to add my voice to the chorus. I have the exact same problem. I'm running the MDA Pro with the Qtek aku 2 rom.
Ive taken to installing all my software to main memory, and now I only have 3 MB free in main storage, while my 1GB SD card goes wasted!
Surur
Same problem. Exec goes idle, switch the power back on, press play and get a popup "unknown error" with an ID code.
Anyone got a fix? Haven't noticed a problem with TomTom5 so far but as for MP3's i have to reset my playlist every so often.
I too get thsi problem occasionally, sometimes even when the unit is still on, the storage acrd disappears. I've even seen it happen when TomTom is running  I simply pop out theSD card, wait a couple of seconds, pop it back in and all is well again. Its a nuisance, but I think its related more to the quality of the SD card than anything else. I have an ADATA 4Gb 150x card
this problem is not new
and it's not isolated to just Exec.
Just google for "wm5 storage card disappear", you'll find lots of discussions on this at aximsite, pocketpcthoughts, etc. The conclusion seems to boil down to HTC coming out with a SD card driver fix in a future rom.
Has anyone been able to install Card Export on the Wizard?
Keep getting Unable to creatge startup shortcut while installing.
Copyed the wm5 .cab file to my unit and installed to internal storage.

I had the same problem, but i heared that some guy got it working on a K-Jam brandet device i have a Qtek Branded device so maybe its the branding ?
I just installed using ActiveSync, and it is working.
Andreas
I tried to install yesterday on my K-Jam (ROM 1.1.9.3), and had trouble. It repeatedly hung on install, requiring a soft reset (after waiting more than 30 minutes for it to complete the install. it never did). The program icon was in Programs folder, and it appeared to connect to my desktop. It showed my K-Jam as another drive, and I was able to browse files. As soon as I tried to copy/move/delete a file using Card Export, my Windows shell (on Desktop) locked up. That's bad. Seems strange Card Export would affect the Desktop, but it did.
So I said to myself "Self, you can't use it with your Windows machine (Windows XP SP 2), but ActiveSync works well enough, so no worries. This looks like a good bit o' software, so let's take it home and try it on the Mac, and see if it works there". Well, didn't get to it last night, so I can't say.
Final problem: Alarm went off this morning (as usual) BUT no Notification window, so I can't Snooze, I can't turn the Alarm off, nothing. I used MemMaid to remove all the notifications, which sort of solved the problem (the alarm stopped going off). Soft Reset, same thing again. Alarm went off, no Notification window, so i can't turn off the alarm. Delete all notifications with MemMaid, don't mess with the Alarm anymore. Get to the office and do the ugly. I had to HARD RESET to clear everyting. I hate that.
It's possible it wasn't Card Export, but everything was working until I installed it yesterday (it was the ONLY thing I installed yesterday), and everything is working now without it.
Good idea, but didn't work for me.

it took about 4 or 5 soft resets to get the prog to work, but no problems since.

Hi guys,
My TyTN appears to freeze up EVERY night while on charge, which is a pain if I have alarms set. The only way to get it working again is to soft-reset it. There is usually nothing running in the background, and it has the standard Orange today screen set.
Any ideas?
Are you using Sprite Backup? I found that mine would freeze at the start of the backup (with option to backup to PC) until I disabled "advanced networking functionality" under Connections... USB to PC.
Never got a clear answer why, or for that matter what that "advanced functionality" is...
No, not using Sprite backup. I might just hard reset the thing and make sure its not buggered!!
Have you got a minisd in. If so you could try leaving this out.
BTW if you gave complete info about your device [ROM, software, sdcard,...] you may get more help.
I have the same problem, every night freezing
I have the I-mate Rom, APPZ running are: SBSH pocket wheather, batti, activesync
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=59007
i have the same thing happening on mine, from what i can tell the problem only occurs when you Dont shut off your device and it is on for some time. If you press power and let it bee it always works fine, but for example when you talk on the phone for say 30minutes, during these 30minutes you dont turn the pda off, then when your done talking you will notice it is hung and you have to soft reset it. so remember, turn the pda off!
i am also led to believe this might be because of the strange battery meter, maybe someone can test this: use the phone so it sais 90% or less, start mediaplayer and play music for 1hour or so, with the screen on (set it so it never turns off in settings), then after 1hour check if the device works? i think the screen freezes when the battery drops from 90% to 80%...
sorry for the long post
This happens to me as well, I never had it running through a single night.
But for me, it is related to this problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=60543 (TyTN does not detect any SIM cards).
My device detects the SIM card with a probability of 1:10 and then runs for 5 minutes or 5 hours until it locks up (while still draining the battery), e.g. overnight. The TUF (time until freeze) obviously depends on the signal strength (i.e. the number of failed connection retries), which is why the problem is hard to explain in the mobile shop downtown.
At home, most of the time it already hangs on the PIN screen (device PIN, not the SIM card's) or during the blue "Windows Mobile" startup splash screen, shortly after the left LED flashes.
I have to return it.

Hmmmm interesting...I bet some of you experiencing this problem have Agile Messenger installed?
same here, but only since 2 days and during the day, with or w/o BT on.
My Orange SPV M3100 freezes with no reason at all. I've done a hard reset & loaded no programs whatsoever. I've enabled push email & normally have wifi & 3G activated. My device is freezing upon waking it up from sleep mode & when charging overnight. It doesn't happen all the tme but it does happen quite regularly.
At first I thought it might be a program I loaded but even now it still does it. I'm reverted back to using my Wizard as main phone until Orange can get this sorted out.
I want to try a different rom but not until there is way to go back to the original rom.
I'm a user of a Dopod 383 Pro.
Also experiencing the hanging every night problem. Also trying to isolate what is causing it. I suspect it is either:
1. Bluetooth (it seems to hang when I leave bluetooth on)
or
2. MicroSD card (I am using a 2GB Sandisk card, it didnt seem to hang when I was using a 1GB Sandisk card)
And yes, I do have Agilemessenger installed - although not sure if that has to do with anything.

I inserted the card using the adapter into my PC SD slot and checked it.
It (FAT 16) was heavily fragmented, I've defragmented and since today (2 days) non more overnight freeze
anyway ny tytn doesn't freeze overnight, BUT i don't use BT on during sleep. probably i had freezes during the day when BT was on, so... could you please check if freeze occours with BT on?
Progress in freezing problem analisys... Never used BT overnight, I've checked and stopped any app using SD card and now I haven't see any freeze.
Also I have the storage card disappeared from windows media player menu.
Checking the card my MSMETADATA dir is "invalid" from Total Commander menu. If I select "update library" all storage card files are detected, but not added to library
I delete it , update and the storage et voila', the card re-appears!
I am almost sure that the freezing problem in my device is a storage card writing problem, NOT related to storage card.
In stand-by mode the storage is "unmounted"? No power? Low Power?
Same happens in first wizard ROMS...
Update: I was experiencing overnight hanging problems on my Dopod 838 Pro (with the Dopod ROM).
Recently I flashed it with the imate ROM - and no more overnight hanging! I tried it with Bluetooth on as well - its okay.
It Agile Messenger! i have had all the roms and found my phone crashed over night and i missed my wake up alarms and if someone tries to call, it will ring on their end, but my phone will not respond so i dont even know who's called.
anyway, i reinstalled the imate rom afterwards again, without Agile Messenger and it's fine.
but now have a new vodafone v1605 with the voda rom and so far so good.
DONT install Agile Messenger.

The first question, does installing tons of applications on storage (memory) slow down your device? (I'm not speaking of running several programs at once but, essentially installing softwares on the device other than SD.)
Second question, the theory of, anything that goes on your TODAY'S SCREEN, should go on the device, however, is there a specific limitation as to how much should go onto the device?
In other words, I noticed that my memory runs roughly between (from soft boot) 28m and an average of 20-25m. Usually the device starts feeling sluggish around 20-25m. It's tolerable but this is only having basic applications on the device. I noticed that once I went below 20m, I'm prone to crashing and severe slowdown on applications launching, closing, etc.
I currently have all my applications on the SD card. I won't focus on the non-today screen applications but I did install those softwares as well on the SD card. The only thing I have installed on the device are Resco Keyboard, Tengo, Flexmail.
Needless to say, my device runs pretty fast. I do get occasionaly lock ups. Lock ups such like when I press the Standby button, at times, when I press the standby button again to wake it up, it won't wake up. Lights are still blinking as if it was active but nothing. I have to actually remove the battery and turn it back on.
This issue could be caused by? (Today screen items installed on SD card?)
I will probably try to reinstall all the todays screen item on the device later on but I'm still testing as to what is the best thing to do. Obviously, there is no way around having certain applications on the SD card but this obviously leads me to my first question.
Here are my current software (there are more but non-essentials are no issue and are on the SD card).
SBSH PocketBreeze
SBSH Contact Breeze
Pocket Informant
SBSH Ilauncher
SBSH Pocket Weather
Flexmail
PhoneAlarm
These are all on the SD card.
What do you think?

To be honest it sounds like you have this pretty well thought out already. You know the theory - anything that runs allthe time should be in Main Memory the rest on SD etc etc.
My experience is that yes, if you over-crowd Main memory it will slow down and crash.
I largely ignore the rules about not storing certain apps on storage card. My only exceptions are Wallpaper and my regular Ring tone - (all the rest on card)
I did notice frequent hangs while I had Phone Alarm installed. (However it has several settings which perhaps could have been changed to make it work more smoothly)
I do not get many lockups but I have run all the usual precautions such as "The Fake Server" for Active Sync automatic soft re-sets, Task manager to shut running progs., etc etc
Overall I guess it's a trade off against speed if it's installed to Main Memory and slowing things down if you overfill Main memory. You find your own balance. I favour virtually everything on SD Card.
Mike
If I had it my way, I would store everything on the SD card. Unfortunately some applications will not work on it, however, some are so and so. It will but it won't. Nevertheless, I thought this out well but I needed to find out if there was anything I would miss in terms of device issues. Like when it goes to sleep mode, I noticed in phonealarm, there is a way to prevent the battery from sleeping? What does that mean? I don't know....
Anyway, anyone else have any other suggestions.
Just got a sandisk 1 gig card for my 8525. Oddly when I press the power button to recover from sleep mode, without the disk in it restores in under a second. With the empty card installed it takes up to 3-4 seconds. Is this normal??
TIA

Does not sound excessive BUT I have same SD card and restores in under 1 second with card in.

I would put ALL of those apps on your device. The card should be used for programs that you OPEN and CLOSE when done. All of those apps run while the phone sleeps. Exit media player when you tyurn the phone off, in case it is playing mp3's that are on yourcard, etc. The whole point is this:
You're device should never, for any reason, try to access the card while asleep!!!
That's the golden rule...
OK so I have to ask. What happens when you break the golden rule? Is it possible that applications accessing the micro SD card while the unit is 'sleeping' (eg messaging software connecting to download new messages every X mins and trying to save them on the SD card) is the cause of the lockup / freeze condition that people are reporting (and that I have too - but only when apps that connect to data network are running in the background).
I have broken the golden rule. I store everything on my SD card with the exception of a few that didn't allow it. This includes softwares that even goes on my today's screen.
How is it performing?
Well, you will get lockup's if you don't know how each software reacts. What is the cause of it? I'm not sure exactly. I know that I narrowed down a couple of softwares that I initially stored on my SD card and then finally moved it onto my memory and the lockups/BSOD (Black screen of death) disappeared.
You have top lay around when installing each software. Some software will warn you that you should install it in memory but can get away with it if it's on the SD card and some softwares will tell you THIS SHOULD BE ON MEMORY, so I don't mess with that. I suggest install as much as you can on SD card and if something goes wrong, check the settings of the last recently software you installed and make sure nothing in the settings is causing the lockup. If there is nothing, then move it to memory.
So here is what I've found out so far for my 8525.
I've convinced myself that if any application, running in the background while the PDA is 'sleeping' (ie the screen turned off), tries to access the SD card it will cause the PDA to lock up.
For a while I thought the issue was related to apps connecting via DUN to the internet, but I now thinks the lock up are related to the SD card access.
So I do install apps on the SD card where possible - but NOT ones that would access the SD card while running in the background. This also applies to where data is stored - eg message attachments (if messaging is downloading e-mails/attachments periodically don't store them on the SD card).
Secondly ensure Active Sync is set to 'manual'. See the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-288352.html
When I ensure nothing is running in the background that accesses the SD card I don't see lock up. While I've not been able (yet) to attribute 100% of my lockups to SD card access by doing this I've been able to virtually eliminate lock ups (I was getting 2-3 per day).
This also implies that I can't leave the programs that I installed on the SD card running in background when the device goes into sleep if there is any possibility they will try and access the SD card (some apps won't do anything until you interact with them, some apps run in the background and connect/download data etc - those I can't leave running).
Hopefully the new ROM will be released shortly and will eliminate this problem and improve the reliability overall!!

That is a good summary and good to get actual experience feedback. The proof of the pudding is in the eating or in your case the enormous reduction in lock ups.

I took another approach to this problem. I like to keep everything on my SD card as well, but I hate the lag that occurs if you put the device to sleep. My solution was, simply put, to never put it to sleep. I disabled sleep completely and I never use the power button to shut down the screen. It's very very nice having it instantly ready to go at the touch of a button. The battery life usage is minimal for me to have this benefit. However, I feel this device is a bit slow still. I would like to find an overclocking program that works for this device eventually.
I was able to reproduce the freezing in standby (i.e. the device not waking up, but leds blinking AND when I tried to call myself from another phone I heard the ringings in the caller phone, but no sign from the freezed TyTN).
I Installed AEButtons (on PHONE memory, not on card).
Put HW1 / HW2 that on single-click / double click to toggle WiFi.
I turn WiFI off, then on, using the HW shortcut.
Then put phone manually to sleep.
It won't wake up by any mean, except soft reset.
Unfortunately, this worked for me every time .
I am uninstalling now all programs one by one because sometimes the freezing would manifest when charging, too (but not always). I will probably end up with a hard reset and start rebuilding again...
Hi,
i have everytime the problem that when i turn the ameo off,
it freeze when i turn it on, this is randomly so i cannot figure out

used on after turn of the device.
I'll hope to find out otherwise i need to to the hard reset

Hi tvrman.
For starters, install Sprite backup (on one of the CD's you got with the Ameo). This will eradicate the need for a full install after a hard reset in the future!
I suggest you do a full hard reset anyway then install Sprite Backup utility.
Only put back your essential apps one by one with 1/2 a days gap between each installation and test the turn off turn on function.
Be sure to use the supplied X-Button application to ensure you properly clode apps down after you're finished with them....or use Wisbar Advance 2, which will do it for you....except for Active Sync (this will always remain active unless shut down manually in memory menu).
I have not once suffered the problem you have in over a months use of the Ameo....might be a faulty unit or a buggy ROM. What version ROM are you using?
Anyway, if all goes well over the next 3 days, do a full backup and save a copy to your storage card or micro drive and be sure to copy a copy over to your PC...that should future peoof you having to do a full install again in the future. And be sure only to back up, if you have no problems with the device and the problems you mentioned earlier. Otherwise you will allways restore the bugs in the device after a hard reset.
Hope this helps. keep us updated on how you get on.
Mackaby007
thanks for you professional answer, i was not aware that spd backup
was on the cd which was delivered at the ameo.
Well yesterday i found out that one of the programs (profimail)
which i'm using serveral times a day for my mail, that this is the problem
I found out that yesterday i didn't use profimail but the built in mail the
whole day and the ameo did not freeze at all the whole day
tried to turn it off an on the whole day and no problems at all,
yesterday late i start profimail and check serveral mails, i close profimail
and turn the device off, later turn it on and a black screen it would not
turn on
After soft reset everthing works.
So i will check today again without using profimail and see what's happends
again.
i'll let you know....
hi,
I had the same problem.
My solution was to format the mini-sd card.
So what i did:
1. copied all data on de minisd in a cardreader to a directory on pc
2. Formatted (not quick) the minisd
3. Copied all data back to the minisd.
All the tests I have tried suggest it is Wisebar Advance 2 that is causing the freezing.
Anyone else find this? Shame as it is the program I like the most

No such issue here! WA2 runs like a dream on my Ameo...even better than it did on my Hermes or Prophet! I'm using the 2.8.0.2 version of WA2 without WAD.
WA2 + WAD
Yes, in my case it was also WA2. I made my own skin and all work fine. But in time I got more lock-ups. So I decided to reinstall everything. Then things went wrong. That day I have installed everything 6 times. Every time I had lock-ups when I pushed the power button and activated it again. But after disabeling WA I had no troubles anymore. The last production and beta version have the same problems. At this point I have to advice not to use WA2. I did not examine every feature of WA2. So there can be one feature that caused the problem. I made my own iPhone landscape skin and I was very pleased. Could somebody try this skin to see if it freezes their device?

Windows Life Messenger

I'll give the skin a test run in an hour, but I refuse to use plug-ins again. They have always caused me problems, but WA2 never has. What version were you running?
Tried the i-phone skin and have experienced no issues whatsoever.
Maybe the Problem is WAD and your plug-ins.
WAD keep on giving problems like this...it's a sin for such an interesting application...here it is because I gave up to use it.

Since I removed the trayap.exe from the init part of the registry I did not have any freezing anymore. I will try WA2 again to see if this solves my problem.

hi all
i find that if i use the off button to turn off the backlight whilst media player is running it jams the machine, requiring a reboot. i know that i can usethe light button on the keyboard but i sometimes forget that media player is running (ie. paused).
I have the same freezing problem now after a few weeks of usage.
The device was running very nicely but now, without installing anything further or adding anything to the device, it freezes randomly.
It likes to freeze when the backlight goes off, while I play MP3 files or have a phone conversation using bluetooth.
In the past 4 days I have softreset the device no less than 81 times.
I suspect the Microdrive is to blame. Is it sensitive to movement?
I will remove all my software and other files from the microdrive and see if things improve.
In the mean time, has anyone else experienced random and frequent freezing?
Oh, I have the Dopod U1000 branded device with the latest firmware.
ok, I had it with this. 16 more soft resets within 4 hours.
I hard reset the device. So far I see no random freezing, but I didn't install anything extra yet except ozVGA and VJBigPhone. And both of them on the internal memory, so nothing on the microdrive.
