Prophet as a MP3 player - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Hey people..
I'm a new owner of a Qtek S200, and Im considering using it as my MP3 player instead of my old one..
Im just curious about how much battery is drained by this? How the quallity is? And how fast I can transfer music from my stationary comp to a SD card in the device if I invest in such..?
Thanks a lot..

I use mine as an mp3 player all the time, I even sold my ipod for that. It doesnt use much battery; cant tell you any exact measures but I really didnt notice that it drains tha battery that much, some times I sleep while it is on and wake up that is about 5 hours and the battery bar looses one or two bars (spb plus battery bar)......quality is very good for me, i didnt notice any difference between it and the ipod in normal conditions...how fast u can transfere music, well it is slow for me!! overall tranfering files to this device seems slow, but I can live with it, as I dont transfere files everyday.
Hope that helps

You should transfer your music via MediaPlayer's sync option.

Didn't try, but don't think so. AFAIK speed is limited by PDA/USB hardware and not software. The only way to get faster transfers is to use a SD/USB card reader to connect the SD card directly to the USB port of the PC.
I have one, but I usually don't bother to take the card out of the prophet. Transfers are not lightning-fast, but I can live with this. I am seldom in a hurry to transfer files.
If you want to transfer files from a PC that doesn't have active sync, you can install WM5torage to emulate a USB key.

I use WM2003 & CE2 really speeds up the file transfer, so WM5torage must be having the same effect for WM5 & Mortplayer makes your device an excellent MP3 player (TCPMP will do it for video content),
M

Wifi
You can also transfer files over the Wifi(g) network if you have one. It is still slower than using a proper SD card reader though.
Comparison:
SD card reader (USB2) - 480Mbps max (60 megabytes per second)
Wi-fi (g) - 56Mbps max (7 megabytes per second)
Sync cable (USB1.1) - 12Mbps max (1.5 megabytes per seconds)
Wi-fi (b) - 11Mbps max (~1.3 megabytes per second)
Bluetooth - 1Mbps max (~0.1 megabytes per second)

Slightly OT: External HD for Universal

I'm after (read-only) 40+gb of storage for the universal, mainly as a WMA/MP3 player in the car and at work. How about this:
Cheap pentium-class laptop from ebay, wifi access point and Personal Web Server or IIS? Would the streaming audio application just work with files hosted (ie put in shared directories) on the laptop or would I need something a little more clever?
Any thoughts on the matter?
WL-HDD
A MUCH cheaper option is a WL-HDD with an external PSP battery (or a car adaptor for in-car storage). Files are accessable with resco file explorer easily or from windows file explorer with a little more difficulty. There is also a huge WL-HDD community with rom updates and so forth. Using it myself with great results, battery life is good for 4 hours streaming, but a bigger 5v 1Amp+ battery could be purchased. The battery I recommend is good as it comes with the USB-Barrel connector you need to power the drive.
WL-HDD:

(or ebay it but less reliable)
Battery I use, others could work.

Interesting... Wireless Snap server...
Not too expensive either!!!!
Nice piece of kit. The only thing, though, how will this cope with streaming? I mean, won't this just present files to download completely before playing? And I guess I wouldn't be able to use playlists or a next track/next album type function in media player
Or is there any way to mount the partition as a drive (like a storage card) on the Universal?
Just to add, one of the MP3 files I have is 10gb (don't ask) so it really would need to be streamed.

i did exactly this at home with my first iPAQ so i could lie down and listen to any music i had on my network at home. back then 64mb flash card didn't store much music. early versions of WM needed network playlists to get the files, i haven't tried it on later version as local storage of 4gB is enough... finally.
If 4gb was enough I'd be happy, but another 200 CDs arrived yesterday and I won't get many of those on a single SD card
I just found this item which looks interesting, especially as it appears to be able to utilise 2.5" notebook HDD and USB Pen Drives!
http://www.qtds.com/products.asp?recnumber=855
Not a bad proce either, although you would obviously need to add in the cost of the HDD or Flash Drive.
Regards,
Colin.
The WL-HDD allows direct streaming, can act as a Wireless Access Point, and has a usb port so you can plug in USB storage and either make it network accessable or automatically copy the contents to the internal drive (which can be up to 100gb, IIRC). You can even plug in a webcam and set to take a photo when motion is detected, or at an interval. It can even email the photo to you!
Honestly, it is the best bit of kit I have, but you will need another power source or extended battery for the exec to handle the constant streaming for any length of time. I get about 4 hours out of it, same life as the WL-HDD .

This seems very similar to the WL-HDD, but the power consumption is 3A. This would be a challenge to run by battery. It also has no homebrew software/bios.

As I said earlier in this post, it automatically streams files unless you choose to copy them.Through Resco, the drive is mounted just like the storage card, under the "Network" heading. To access it you simply have to log onto the drive using Wi-fi, and map the network drive by tap-holding and choosing the option "map network drive" over the network icon in resco. I use Wisbar advanced desktop (which I also recommend) so I have an icon on my desktop that goes straight there. Listening to music off it is just like from a storage card.
Pyrojester,
That sounds perfect, many many thanks.
No problem, anyone feel free to PM me or post about it, I feel like sharing the love. It works perfectly, I couldn't beleive it.
This is interesting.
My point is, my daughter fried my ipod but i am thinking of using my "spare" M5000 as an alternative, i currently have a 1gig sdd in it but was thinking of using its wifi technology to aceess my music from the pc, is this possible with this wireless drive or is there a drive that the M5000 can hook up to and access my library.
One point i would like to mention though, my ipod was hooked up to my hifi unit via its dock (which basically is the headphone socket) when i use the same lead coming out of the headphone socket of the M5000 and into the aux port of the hifi the i have to crank the volume right up to hear anything. Is there something i am doing wrong hear, just thought it would be same output as the ipod??

Another Option...
I use this device : http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_vosonic_xs_drive_super_vp6210.php (review)
I originally purchased it as a backup device for photos, as you can insert a memory card and copy its contents to the internal hard drive.
The 6210 uses laptop hard drives (any size) and it's easy to swap drives (it's supplied with a keyring screwdriver to open it up and detach drives).
It can also format your memory card.
Unlike most devices of this type, it can also write from the hard drive to your memory card, so just pop your SD card in and transfer any files you want to it, then pop your SD card back in your Universal.
Also, it has basic MP3 player functions, so I have it hooked up to my car stereo, using a standard 3.5" connector. No more listening to moronic radio jocks, bliss! Mine was supplied with a car (cigarette lighter socket) charger.
The device normally lasts about 3hr on a single charge and it has a sleep function, that switches off the screen and/or the hard drive if not being used, so it can last a fair bit.
It can also connect to a tv and play .avi or .mpeg-2 movies...
The company that makes these is bringing out a new version with an 8hr battery and a 3.6" screen, so I'm saving my pennies!
That is kind of pricey.I like the idea of being able to travel and change the options of what is stored on my SD card.Thank you. What does the amount transfer to in US dollars?
Regards

I bought mine from a friend, but as I work for micro anvika I know they are reliable . As for shipping to america, i would recommend scanning ebay, or just googling it to purchase.
Best Mp3 player for streaming
By far the best mp3 player for both songs and audio books including streaming through wifi networks is Mortplayer. You'll love it. I imagine it will work perfectly with your wifi HD drive also. Big buttons for no stylus use. For net work drives to show up just map drive in built in file explorer first then Mortplayer picks it up. Mortplayer is free but i recommend donating as it is one of the best apps i have seen.

my t-mobile ameo times out ?

Hi
when syncing its fine
but when it comes to copying stuff over to the microdrive or
minisd card it times out vista come up with error saying device has turned off
anyone else had this prob ?
is there a timing setting i dont know about ?
cheers
Are they large files by any chance? If so, there seems to be a 'feature' of craptivsync and the Ameo where it won't copy large files (+20mb in my tests) without crapping out. The fix is to install wm5torage which makes the device act like a USB drive (overriding activesync). This works without issue and is about 1000x quicker than copying files via activesync. I'm using it even for small files as it seems to work at USB2 speeds rather than Serial Speeds! Do a search on here for Wm5torage and you'll be away.

I think all T-mobile user experience this problem, yes, the only solution now for you guys is to use the wm5torage. Luckily the DOPOD U1000 don't have this problem, and also an interesting point is my DOPOD U1000 transfer file equally fast as wm5torage via activesync, and no problem with large file as well. (over 2Gb)
I've not had any problems with my Ameo - copying 350 - 400 meg AVI files to the microdrive (using just regular ActiveSync only) works fine.
Well, I say fine - the progress bar goes a little bonkers. If it is to be believed, then the transfer restarts about half a dozen times, gets about 1/5th of the way through, then completes instantly.
But the files always end up on the Ameo fine.
Hi,
interesting to know it does it on some and not on others
i tried that program and it works fine
thanks for replys
I have only this problem when I transfer large files and I use my Ameo. When you leave your Ameo alone during the transfer their wil be no problem. I noticed this problem for the first time when a lot of programs were running.

USB 2.0

The specification of the HTC X7500 says USB 2.0 for the ExtUSB port (the slave port for the mini-USB connector).
So it should be theoretically possible to write to the MiniSD or MicroDrive with USB 2.0 hi-speed, using a PC and the cable.
Now.... anyone know how? ActiveSync and Windows Mobile Device Center seem to be limited to USB 1.1-speed and I don't think apps like WM5torage or Card Export Pro II will do the job.............. will they?
Use WM5torage for transferring big files. You get the USB 2 speed.

Are you sure ? In the notes it says "(albeit USB 1.0 only, and not very fast)". Has anyone tested actual transferrates ?

It's has to be faster than USB 1.1. I copied two 700 MB movies to the MicroDrive, and that would certainly take forever with USB 1.1...

I don't believe it is - this site is normally accurate:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=691
Well, still: With USB 1.1 copying 1.4 GB would take ALOT of time. It didn't, so it has to be faster.
when plugged into a usb 1 socket windows pops up the "this device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB2"..

I tried copying files using ActiveSync, but it was terribly slow (and it seemed like it started over and over). However; WM5torage is excellent!

Sorry, this is from the old times, when there were no high-speed USB 2.0 capable devices out there
I will correct it now
Actually, WM5torage supported high-speed USB from the version 1.0

just to clear one thing up....the standard USB port is 2.0
However according to HTC's own Spec sheet, the USB host facility through the 4 in 1 cable is 1.1
but yes, WM5torage is certainly quicker at transferring large files to the microdrive.
I get the same problem when sending large files with activesync. never had it until 4.5 was put on My PC. but then I thought that was a known bug with the crap that is activesync!

High CPU Usage with W-LAN traffic

Hello,
today I tried to play a movie from a network share over wireless LAN on my Shift. The movie was played with very low fps and was unenjoyable. I thought it could be a problem with the network speed, so i copied the file onto my desktop. The transfer speed was as the maximum of my W-LAN's speed but the Shift was responding very slow. The Process Explorer (a task manager) showed me, that the "DPCs" process had a very high CPU usage during this transfer. And on my desktop I could play the movie without any problems.
So it seems, that my Shift has a very high CPU Load, while some data is being transfered over its W-LAN adapter. Can anyone confirm this behavior?
How can I avoid this?
PS: My Vista and the Shift's drivers are all already up to date via Windows Update.

Have you tried only one movie? What encoding rate?
I actually copied a movie to the Shift and it didnt play well. But it was
a blueray rip and very intense on the CPU.
No, it is not the problem of the movie or its codec. When I have the file on the hdd, it plays without a problem. But when I have ~1MiB/s Data Traffic over my WLAN, the CPU usage jumps up to 100%.
Maybe the WLAN driver is bad or the interface, which is used to connect the WLAN adapter, produces this CPU load.
This problem is still present
Last week I tried to make a video chat over MSN, but it was really too slow.
The problem was not MSN, it was the WLAN driver, which causes TOO much CPU usage.
Am I really only the one, who has this problem?
Don't worry for example in another UMPC -Asus R2E, which has same specification like HTC Shift (1gb RAM,same processor, but twice bigger hardrive) this things was happend to me , all time, and the same is on Shift, so it is showing that Processor cannot handle some kind software, like Skype for example or streaming huge files, but this not means that is something wrong...I just dont even look on CPU usage on this type devices...

Playing 1080P/720P Movies - Enquiry

Hello,
I am planning to buy SGS2 OR Galaxy Note and was wondering if it can play 1080P/720P full length movies on it... All my movies are around 5-7GB in size.
Also, will there be a problem playing frm internal memory as it wont support anything greater than 2GB?
Plz post your expereince for "playing Big Files"
i have played 10 gb blue ray rips(full hd), via wifi streaming and it played like charm. Didnt tried copying things to phone memory, as you said the file system wont support larger files, but you can try formatting your card to ntfs or exfat with suitable mods, if you want to use those bigger files
The CPU/GPU cannot be beat by anything in the market for playing hidef movies. No matter the format or bitrate I can't find a file this phone can't play, and most of my downloads are 1080p high profile from my media center PC. BUT if you use fat 32 (default) you'll be limited to 4gb per file. Maybe use ntfs (search here)?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
From the above, i see tht the phone can play big files with no problem and i just have to format my Sd card to NTFS... But wht about internal Memory? can it be formatted to NTFS - If yes, its simple OR i have to hack sumthing ??

For it to support NTFS, you need root and do some trickery. It is not straightforward.

A wifi router is simply enough to do the task. Yout pc dont need a usb wifi adapter.
All the data are transmitted from your pc to mobile via wifi router.
Once you have a wifi router on your pc to transmit data, you can try the following apps to play the movies from your pc to mobile.
1.VLC direct.
2.ES File Explorer.
The later one is much efficient
Hmmm... Wifi Router is big and pricey.
So, i think if work can be done with a portable USB Wifi adapter why to see anything else?
Plz can u do lil more explaining, as i really suck at this part of wireless technology and why i cant just use adapter?
@craige
Wifi router is not that much expensive, you can get one from belkin or netgear for cheap rates.
1.Once you install your wifi router in your pc, the work is pretty much done.
2.Connect your phone to your wifi.
3.Installed the above mentioned softwares.
4.Configure it and start watching movie from anywhere within your wifi range.
USB WiFi adapter will most likely only allow PC to connect to WIFI network. But you need a router or WiFi access point to host your wifi network. WiFi is not like Bluetooth where you connect one device directly to another.
So cheapest option might be wireless router or access point. It all depends on your network configuration at home, like what other devices you have and is there an empty Ethernet port on your main internet box (broadband modem).
Why not watch the movie on your nice big monitor? Or better yet, stream to a massive tv rather than a 4.3" screen. I can't see why I'd need this in my own home...
