USB 2.0 - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

The specification of the HTC X7500 says USB 2.0 for the ExtUSB port (the slave port for the mini-USB connector).
So it should be theoretically possible to write to the MiniSD or MicroDrive with USB 2.0 hi-speed, using a PC and the cable.
Now.... anyone know how? ActiveSync and Windows Mobile Device Center seem to be limited to USB 1.1-speed and I don't think apps like WM5torage or Card Export Pro II will do the job.............. will they?

Use WM5torage for transferring big files. You get the USB 2 speed.
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=238545

Are you sure ? In the notes it says "(albeit USB 1.0 only, and not very fast)". Has anyone tested actual transferrates ?
Oliver

It's has to be faster than USB 1.1. I copied two 700 MB movies to the MicroDrive, and that would certainly take forever with USB 1.1...

I don't believe it is - this site is normally accurate:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=691

Well, still: With USB 1.1 copying 1.4 GB would take ALOT of time. It didn't, so it has to be faster.

when plugged into a usb 1 socket windows pops up the "this device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB2"..

if i remember correctly, Ameo has some problem transferring large file to Micro Drive, and also it seems rather slow to transfer as well

Does that go for the Advantage too?
I tried copying files using ActiveSync, but it was terribly slow (and it seemed like it started over and over). However; WM5torage is excellent!

if you are copying a large file and it keep failing, then that is something wrong, for me DOPOD U1000, all my file are copy correctly and the same speed with wm5torage too.

Sorry, this is from the old times, when there were no high-speed USB 2.0 capable devices out there
I will correct it now
Actually, WM5torage supported high-speed USB from the version 1.0

Right. Then I have a problem. It worked the first time I copied some large files, but after that it just takes for ever...

just to clear one thing up....the standard USB port is 2.0
However according to HTC's own Spec sheet, the USB host facility through the 4 in 1 cable is 1.1
but yes, WM5torage is certainly quicker at transferring large files to the microdrive.
I get the same problem when sending large files with activesync. never had it until 4.5 was put on My PC. but then I thought that was a known bug with the crap that is activesync!

"USB Mass Storage Device" Software

Hi,
Just like the new feature in WM5 "USB Mass Storage Device" there is a software package which does the same.
It turns the USB port of your Pocket Pc in a Dumb USB Memory stick. Check out http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2/
BUT Sadly.... the site say's the following:"i-Mate
Model Processor type Test result Notes
Jam Intel PXA27x Doesn't work yet
So I need other potential users who think they gonna buy the software when it works on the Magician! They say We are permanently developing support for the new devices. Tell us what device support do you need.
Drop them a Mail or message on http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2/ and hopefully they will develop soon a nice to have tool (and long waited for one) for the Magician!
Or maybe somebody else knows a alternative (yeah yeah, i would like to say the wm5 will come soon to the magician)
Take care , Tom from Holland
Stupid me, Didn;t use the search option long enough, find a cross posting : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=23233 was allready there. Looks like they fixed the [problem, unofficial it works now thanx to DES.
If I read from the website :
Accessing storage card has never been easier!
Switch USB mode from Active Sync to Card Export
Insert your Pocket PC into cradle or connect to USB cable
And after few seconds desktop drivers automatically mount cards as a logical disk!
What is special in it? Cant you do it using ActiveSync?

Not all machines have ActiveSync installed. With Card Export installed, you ppc can be treated as a card reader (no driver for Win2k or above).
Using card export for Car Radio's.
Is there someone who tested it also with USB Car Radio systems? They sell car radio's where you can put in your USB key/stick and the Car radio starts playing the MP3 songs on that stick!
It would be awesome if you could connect you Jam to you radio system this way!
Take Care, Tom from Holland.
I Got a quick and complete answer back from them!

Thank you for your request.
As far as I know, Card Export II should work with Car radio, because we have reports that Card Export II for Palm OS works with Car radio. Anyway, you'll be able to download trial version and try it before buying.
We are planning to support your device in our updated version today or tomorrow.

How do I switch form Active Sync to card export?
Typically RTFM!
Or start CE2 on your magician, you'll get a icon in your tray, tick it and setup preferences & default card. Then tick Card Export in the same menu. Now your magacian isn't using the SD anymore. On your PC disable AS usb connection & plugin the usb at both ends. Now your mass storage device will be installed.
regards, M
So this is not possible without CE?

Not everyone has a card reader at home and not everyone has activesync installed. i.e. i use CE when i'm at university and i need to bring my work with me, or when i'm at one of my friends' home and he shows me his latest mp3 collection...
I don't usually bring a usb key with me (and even when i do, my key has only 128MB Vs my jam SD card's 1GB) while my jam is ALWAYS with me. Sure, you'll need a mini usb cable but, fortunately, many digital cameras, scanners, printers and so on have one.
That said, I think CE is one of the most useful programs out there.
Just my two cents...
Bye bye,
Isidoro
PS: starting from 2.04, Card ExportII is FULLY compatible with our Magicians.
PS2: I'm DEFINITELY NOT a CE developer!!! Bye

I agree CE is the best option (I'm still in the trial period), only having WM5 & CE apparently being not compatible you need that card-reader or settle for low speed LOL
First advantage of not having WM5 second is VGS push-mail
Perfect. I just tried it, and it works flawlessly straight out of the box.

MicroDrive issues

I'd like to start this thread as a separate and dedicate one for the multiple MicroDrive issues ...
We have a few HTC Advantage (T-Mobile Ameo) devices here.
Basically there seem to be 3 issues with the device all of which are related to the MicroDrive:
1) MD = NOT ROBUST
despite marketing slogans the MicroDrives still obviously are not at all robust:
- a security mechanism shall stop them when exposed to shock
- the device comes with integrated GPS and therefore will be used as navigation system: permanent use (espacially accessing the MicroDrive) in the car
- we see the MicroDrive stop and cease to function from time to time up to even resulting in complete system freeze
=> interim summary: shock proof mechanism and permanent use do not work both at the same time, short term stops and complete malfunction to be expected (very likely for the majority of devices)
2) MD = SLOW
several years of using Pocket PCs with all kinds of storage have shown us, that the MicroDrive belonged and still belongs to the slowest on the market;
=> currently we see ...
- much slower start of system (i.e. after soft reset) the more applications are installed on the MicroDrive
- much slower start of several navigation systems (TomTom, iGo, Navigon) which of course are installed (at least their maps) on the MD
- explorer / start menu / several applications accessing files stored on or links to applications installed on the MicroDrive show dramatically bad performance
3) MD -> BATTERY DRAIN
the only issue we read of but cannot yet 100% confirm;
we avoided to install applications with permanant access to MicroDrive, i.e. no today plugins etc have been installed on MD;
but: we can confirm that it takes a long time to load an empty battery or almost does not reload when using USB cable (via laptop / PC) instead of charging via AC adaptor
We read about similar requests and would definitely support them (if possible):
For all 3 issues as described above we would strongly opt for and recommend replacement by CF drives (i.e. Transcend CF 8 GB 120x).
!!! Does anybody have access to the service manuals ?
We'd actally like to do that replacement asap if there is any chance to.
Any comments / other experience ?
Thanks for Your feedback

From what i heard, that's why Advantage is delay , because the Rom they wrote doesn't deal with Micro Drive in the right and correct way. BUT Dopod u1000 one is fine, i personally own the DOPOD U1000, and the reading and writting speed of MD is at least 3 times faster than my High speed mini sd. Battery Drain is nothing, i guess it's all to do the the ROM, again, Dopod has prove to be a better Athena for now until someone make a better Rom.
I would love to replace the Micro Drive with CF Flash card, anyone has any idea how to do that?
A few points:
1. HTC recommends using the Mini-SD slot for fast operation of applications, navigation maps, etc. Meaning: you better install this stuff to a fast Mini-SD or SDHC card.
2. the 8 GB HDD is mainly for data storage/media storage
3. since the Ameo is using a 2200 mAh rech. battery, it takes much longer until it is charged by the USB port of a PC/laptop. Recharging the Ameo with the AC ad. is highly recommended.
I agree with your concerns but I think that HTC had to keep the price tag of the Athena at a certain level and the only way to do that was using a MD instead of NAND memory. Maybe they should have talked to Apple first.
The HTC X7500/Ameo/U1000 is a very nice Pocket PC Smartphone but I think people expect too much from it. If you want something really nice but very expensive, wait for the Vaio UX with built-in UMTS/HSDPA modem rumoured for this autumn. If you don't want to wait, the Samsung Q1b is just around the corner, it should be released soon. Built-in HSDPA included, a SSD version should be released shortly after. At slightly below 900 Euro (Ameo), this unit can't do wonders.

I've now got me an Ameo and can say this much...the above scenarios are slowly becoming a reality for me. MD is slow as hell and I can't even active sync large files across to it from PC. I can transfer no probs to SD card via card reader on PC then to MD via SD card once re-inserted.
This is not good. HTC should have known better and at least implemented a bit of software to allow for USB mass storage capability. I think I'd better do some more reading of the manual and research more about USB mass storage software.
I'm sure this was available some time ago for the Universal...just can't remember when or where.

I have the software here if you want, just give me your e-mail, i can send it to you
In the other hand, the result of DOPOD U1000 is very different, the Micro Drive in my device runs really well, (even faster than my mini-SD by doing the benchmark)
Transfer large file is no problem and is fast. Don't see any problem on it.
I guess after all, DOPOD still on top on writing Roms, hopefully the Advantage will sort their machine out when it comes out (since they are getting the help from DOPOD).

Are they large files by any chance? If so, there seems to be a 'feature' of craptivsync and the Ameo where it won't copy large files (+20mb in my tests) without crapping out. The fix is to install wm5torage which makes the device act like a USB drive (overriding activesync). This works without issue and is about 1000x quicker than copying files via activesync. I'm using it even for small files as it seems to work at USB2 speeds rather than Serial Speeds! Do a search on here for Wm5torage and you'll be away.

I think all T-mobile user experience this problem, yes, the only solution now for you guys is to use the wm5torage. Luckily the DOPOD U1000 don't have this problem, and also an interesting point is my DOPOD U1000 transfer file equally fast as wm5torage via activesync, and no problem with large file as well. (over 2Gb)
I've not had any problems with my Ameo - copying 350 - 400 meg AVI files to the microdrive (using just regular ActiveSync only) works fine.
Well, I say fine - the progress bar goes a little bonkers. If it is to be believed, then the transfer restarts about half a dozen times, gets about 1/5th of the way through, then completes instantly.
But the files always end up on the Ameo fine.
Hi,
interesting to know it does it on some and not on others
i tried that program and it works fine
thanks for replys
I have only this problem when I transfer large files and I use my Ameo. When you leave your Ameo alone during the transfer their wil be no problem. I noticed this problem for the first time when a lot of programs were running.

I love this forum. I have learn't so much so far, but still have a lot to learn. Epecially programming for WM. Anyway, on to the reason for posting this thread.
Since learning that I could flash from my microSD card thanks to the tutorial by renaming the *.nbh to KAISIMG.nbh and placing it in the root folder. I have been making custom 1st splash screens to flash remotely as well as making a directory on my microSd ("Flashing from MicroSD") and creating directories for original roms such as (\WM6 Originals\Alex\KAISIMG.nbh) or (\WM6.1\SleuthV3\KAISIMG.nbh), (I also have KAISIMG for just Radios under a different folder) so when I want to try a new rom, flash a different radio or splash, I can at anytime.
Here's the thing I love using the splash tools (maker and converter) and Rom Builder. But obviously you need a PC. Would anyone by able to recreate a mobile version of these tools so we could do most things (customisation wise) whilst we are mobile.
I.E. I want to make and flash a new splash whilst mobile from a *.jpg. I could use this program to convert to .bmp format needed, then convert to *.nb thsn to *.nbh. I could then use a file manager to rename to KAISIMG.nbh then place in microSD root folder and flash.
What you think? Would this be too hard to do? Anyone want more mobile control of your mobile customisation?
Other tools that could be ported would also help. I make the welcome.96.png with my mobile graphics problems.
Well for the moment I'll stick to making several themed splash into the KAISIMG.nbh to flash remotely (making sure you have enough battery mind/dont flash on 10% or something/I recommend over 10% for mobile flashing your splashes and over 50% for you WM Roms)
Got a collection of around 19 Slide out Keyboard sounds inc Knightrider, Thundercats, Xbox 360 boot sound and others. When I have a couple more made I'll post my Sliding keyboard Sounds.cab if anybody wants it over the next Couple of days. (Some sounds gathered from other users share i.e. Mario etc) See this post for my collection of sounds: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=372999
Thanks anyway. Feel free to post your views and look forward to seeing if anyone is up to this challenge..

OTG
Ok, here I go again. How about this??
I have a mini-usb to female USB connector which came with my Archos AV700TV for OTG (On The Go). Which allows me to insert my 4GB usb stick into the Archos. Where I can play, copy, delete or edit anything on the stick.
These connectors don't cost a lot and in my point of view would be a great advantage to those of us that want to Flash our Roms and Splash screens etc whilst we are at work or as a passenger in a car. I would like to leave my memory card with just my programs and music.
By having OTG on our devices I/we could keep all our KAISIMG.nbh (Orginal Roms, Custom Roms, Roms we are trying, Radios, Splash) All on a Usb stick, just lease a Maximum of 150MB on memory card. So that when you want to Flash a Rom. You connect your usb stick via small (mini-usb to female usb) into Kaiser (or other/I'm not Phonist) And use either an already existing filemanager (Resco/Total Commander etc) or created app (developed for sole OTG purpose) to copy \Custom Rom\Alex\WM6.1\Version 3\KAISIMG.nbh to the root of your memory card. Disconnect usb stick boot into bootloader and flash image.
You could also keep all your backup .cab files on the stick and perhaps ask the writer of Tier Auto Install to allow these to be read off such a device as a usb stick using (OTG).
And at only a guess if OTG was created for our phones I'm sure they could possible support higher size usb sticks than our microSDHC cards.
Only an Idea though. CAN ANYONE HELP?????
The USB OTG protocol is a hardware thing. Most WM devices do not have the ability to host a USB port, and so cannot initiate the connection needed to acheive what you want.

Never Mind then just thought with it being (Universal Serial Bus) I thought we could perhaps do something along the lines of WM5Storage. Thought it'ld just be a driver plus writing a relevant protocal script.
Thanks for the input anyway.

Yes you said and I submitted. No harm in extra reading material as this is something I'm interested. Besides there is nothing much else to do in Blackpool at the moment.
Gonna go read..

Who knows!! LOL
Gonna, try and by a cheap otg hd with built in led and see if it picks up the phone, maybe using the WM5Storage program so the otg hd might recognise it as the otg drive would be the host and has the hardware.
Even if it works, a bit bigger than something that can be carried around the neck...
I'm Bored...
If you have a OTG archos, couldn't you use that?

Yeah, tried just now it comes up with portable storage device connected, but has some kind of error "USB Device could not be read correctly. Please try again".
It charges my phone though, so that a positive at least. Can use it as a portable battery pack as I take my archos everywhere. And I can charge that at work.
Maybe the error is caused because the phone has multiple memory types: Flash, microSD. Maybe it needs some software to point it in the right direction.???
Even when using WM5torage?

Yes, I have version 1.8. Don't know if this is recent and I'm using WM6.1 (Sleuth V3)
It reads card via card reader though via otg.
Ah, Softtick Card Export Works fine direct to archos. Still not quite what I was after but would sufice.
I gotta get me one of those...

I love my Archos AV700TV. Just got two of my colleagues one each for £150 inc postage.
7inch Screen, TV-OUT/TV-IN Freeview TV with Quality Aerials plus Aerial Car suction cup mounts. OTG go with cool browser, Pics, games, movies (including divx) Great battery life 40gb HD by default (up to 100GB) Can record freeview straight to box with included aerials or using TV Aerial to Mini-usb adapter. Also has a schedular feature, Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive.
Now it stores my WM Roms and .cabs and also can be used to charge my phone via usb.
Wouldn't Sell it for the world!! Oh and comes with graphics drivers!! LOL

MR2 - Mass Storage?

Hi!
Can anyone tell me if X2 finally supports USB Mass storage mode with MR2? If not, I'm really going to be upset.
Thanks
didnt it always? though it was REALLY SLOW
not in the same way that the X1 had. ive not noticed any new mass storage feature. still looks like you have to connect to activesync first.

Thanks. That su*ks a big way. Actually I think this doesn't conform to the definition of "USB Mass Storage".
no it doesnt. but its the only way to access the memory card. to be honest its not too bad. i plug in my X2. then i go into "my computer" and its listed in there and i can browse to the memory card same as the X1. the downside is when you transfer stuff to your pc its slower because it uses activesync. no idea why they couldnt let us access the card directly. probably a way to force us to use their software.
Have you tried to use WM5Storage v1.9 (or some other versions)? I heard that it works on X2
