Playing 1080P/720P Movies - Enquiry - Galaxy S II General

Hello,
I am planning to buy SGS2 OR Galaxy Note and was wondering if it can play 1080P/720P full length movies on it... All my movies are around 5-7GB in size.
Also, will there be a problem playing frm internal memory as it wont support anything greater than 2GB?
Plz post your expereince for "playing Big Files"

i have played 10 gb blue ray rips(full hd), via wifi streaming and it played like charm. Didnt tried copying things to phone memory, as you said the file system wont support larger files, but you can try formatting your card to ntfs or exfat with suitable mods, if you want to use those bigger files

The CPU/GPU cannot be beat by anything in the market for playing hidef movies. No matter the format or bitrate I can't find a file this phone can't play, and most of my downloads are 1080p high profile from my media center PC. BUT if you use fat 32 (default) you'll be limited to 4gb per file. Maybe use ntfs (search here)?

From the above, i see tht the phone can play big files with no problem and i just have to format my Sd card to NTFS... But wht about internal Memory? can it be formatted to NTFS - If yes, its simple OR i have to hack sumthing ??

For it to support NTFS, you need root and do some trickery. It is not straightforward.

A wifi router is simply enough to do the task. Yout pc dont need a usb wifi adapter.
All the data are transmitted from your pc to mobile via wifi router.
Once you have a wifi router on your pc to transmit data, you can try the following apps to play the movies from your pc to mobile.
1.VLC direct.
2.ES File Explorer.
The later one is much efficient

Hmmm... Wifi Router is big and pricey.
So, i think if work can be done with a portable USB Wifi adapter why to see anything else?
Plz can u do lil more explaining, as i really suck at this part of wireless technology and why i cant just use adapter?

@craige
Wifi router is not that much expensive, you can get one from belkin or netgear for cheap rates.
1.Once you install your wifi router in your pc, the work is pretty much done.
2.Connect your phone to your wifi.
3.Installed the above mentioned softwares.
4.Configure it and start watching movie from anywhere within your wifi range.

USB WiFi adapter will most likely only allow PC to connect to WIFI network. But you need a router or WiFi access point to host your wifi network. WiFi is not like Bluetooth where you connect one device directly to another.
So cheapest option might be wireless router or access point. It all depends on your network configuration at home, like what other devices you have and is there an empty Ethernet port on your main internet box (broadband modem).

Why not watch the movie on your nice big monitor? Or better yet, stream to a massive tv rather than a 4.3" screen. I can't see why I'd need this in my own home...

Installed ES File Explorer and now I can browse all the shared folders in my PC over WiFi but I can't seem to play MKV files. Do I need to install a different player app in the phone or should ES File Explorer do it?

Install MX Player, that should help.

Just about to say the same....

How do you guys stream 1080p mkv's smoothly, I just bought a TP-link WR1043ND 300 Mbps N router and on my phone it says I'm connected at 65mbps. I stream SD movies from my pc to my phone fine but HD movies stutter.
P.S. using ES File Explorer and Dice player

[Q] Sharing video from phone to computer

I need to share videos on my phone to my work laptop.
I cannot install programs on my work laptop (So VLC won't do. Neither will portable VLC, I think.)
I already tested I can run barnacle wifi tether.
I can create adhoc on laptop as well.
I can't use my laptop to use the work network to do non work functions. I doubt they'll not mind a few websites, but streaming videos will definitely get me in trouble.
I can bypass this by streaming it from my phone. No business bandwidth used, no programs installed, no files copied onto the computer.
I assume you're not allowed to connect USB storage to the work laptop? Otherwise you could just put the phone in USB mass storage mode and play files that way.

Forgot about that one. I wouldn't want to try. They've given us password protected, metal encased, waterproof USB sticks to move things between work computers. It would be much better to stream media.
Oh, also, Windows Media Player is installed. And Real as well, I think.
If either can function as a DLNA/UPNP client, the DLNA app preloaded on the Atrix has the ability to stream media stored on the phone.

So, what would need to be done?
DLNA running on phone. I guess WiFi from either. But, how do I access it if I can't install DLNA software onto laptop?
Windows Media Player can act as a DLNA client. Google is your friend.

Looks like there no "find media that others are sharing" option on WinXP. But we're supposed to switch to Win7 soon.
Any other options in the meanwhile?
I've managed to connect to my phone through barnacle, but then I can't run Wifi File Explorer to stream media. Barnacle makes the phone at 192.168.5.1, but I don't know how to access files to stream by connecting to a URL through a media player. Is there a way to serve streaming media from on the phone to a computer when running barnacle?
I can't seem to connect to an ad hoc network created by my laptop. I keep getting stuck on "Obtaining IP address". Apparently theres a file that can be edited to remedy this, but some people have made their wifi broken without being able to fix it by restoring the original file. Has anyone done this on the Atrix?

[Q] Use Archos 5 500gb as NAS?

I hate to clog this wonderful forum up with possible off topic banter...
I have an Archos 5 500gb and would love to wirelessly use the huge amount of files on it for my A500... I don't know where to start... yes I can USB but then the Archos pulls charge from my A500 and I'm trying to avoid that.
Can they talk through wifi, bluetooth this way?
Thanks in advance!!!!
Have you tried pairing them with BT before posting?
Tried "bluetooth file transfer" at first it streamed 1 min of a movie (cool) then crashed using moboPlayer...
After a reboot of the tab, while running the app on both tab and archos and having paired them previously, I'm 12 minutes into a streaming movie... looks great hope that it will continue to work though after locking up that is... could just be moboPlayer... I've had this happen with it and wifi streaming using file experts smb streaming... nothing works perfect yet... with the file expert or bluetooth file transfer you cannot seek forward and because everytime you connect it gives a new file name mobo doesn't remember what or where you streamed last and cannot resume...
I guess what I really want is that smb experience you get with windows =) (without all the "bugs")
mmm what about mounting your archos as a samba share and reading it from your iconia, but mounted with cifs manager... you have to manually load the cifs.ko module
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
I'm not rooted yet... When I plug it into the usb it works the best as MSC... but as I said the archos will charge (really slow and not even enough if being used to copy files) from the usb so it drains my a500 down much quicker.
I got the bluetooth working with moboPlayer but when I hit back on moboPlayer back to "bluetooth file transfer"(bft), bft says it is streaming still and has to be force closed... I'm exhausted trying to get that to work... usb host is the best for moboPlayer in all ways... now if I can keep the archos from sucking down on my battery... is there a way to remove the 5v line from the usb cable? or a cable like that?
thanks
I have a similar question. For some reason I can't connect my Evo as a disk on my a500. Both being Android I thought this would be easy and doable.

[Q] DLNA question

The GNote is dlna compliant is it not?
So I'm wondering why when I connect to my dlna samsung tv, the only drive I can see browsing via the tv is the 2.8 gb phone root.
I have no access to the 11gb extended phone memory or the sd card.
Has anyone managed to connect to their dlna tv and access all their memory locations?
And if so can you please explain how you did it?
Heres hoping.
I'm bumping this topic back to the front page to keep it current.
I was honestly expecting to find all the phones drives by simply connecting to my dlna tv with usb.
This is such a handy feature of dlna that I feel it must be do'able with the GNote, what with it being dlna certified, that I can't help but feel that it must be something that I am not doing or doing wrong.
I could browse and play all the media files, including the sd card on my old HD2 through my tv simply by attaching the phone to the tv via a usb cable.
I cant however with the sammy.
Here is hoping that some Guru can pin this down.
Regards.
DLNA is wireless media streaming there is no USB connection involved
Try the Allshare app included

What no direct cable connection? I clearly need to brush up on my wifi.
Was looking for the functionality of simply plugging my device into the tv then accessing the memory of the phone and playing the media while charging the unit. Seems to me that there is a trick there that's been missed.
Dank U wel for your response wonderwout, I'll investigate this further.

For getting media on your tv quick Allshare over wifi is pretty good. Start a media file on your phone when in the player hit "share" from the menu and select Allshare. It will ask you to select a target device, select your tv and your set. You need to have it all on same network off course.
can anyone post dlna.apk from stock rom, please?

Yes sir, you are right DLNA isnt wifi specific though. DLNA only means media over network, be it cable or wireless doent matter. But it doesnt cover usb/mass storage mode file access.
But plugging in the note and chosing to allow usb access should put up two drives, one being the internal 16gig flash memory and a second one representing the sd card. I reckon your TV is not able to access two drives and instead just mounts the first one available with no way to switch.
If possible, update TV firmware and also, if possible, use DLNA. The TV needs network cspabilities for thst to work though...

When I connect my note to my PS3 using ALL SHARE, I am able to see the note on the PS3 menu. I am even able to play videos on the PS3 wirelessly. But I am not able to see the PS3 on the ALL SHARE app in the note. All it shows is No Device.
What am I doing wrong?

I think that PS3 is only a dlna client and not a server.

Playing videos from phone

Is there a way to stream/play videos to my Nexus 7 from my phone(HTC Thunderbolt). Due to the storage limitation on the Nexus 7, I figured this might be a good solution to get around it. I want to be able to stream the media without connecting to a network/router because I spend a lot of time commuting.
I've successfully connected to my phone by FTPing using 3G/4G by tethering my phone to the tablet. I can stably transfer files at 2-2.5 MB/s which sure as hell beats Bluetooth and should be adequate to stream videos. Using ES File Explorer, I've connected to my phone using the same method and it lets me play files directly off my phone using the MX Player. Great.
Of course it's not that easy or else I wouldn't have my this thread. When I try to seek it gives me an error, "Sorry, video cannot be played". The message is persistent once it shows up and the only way to fix it is to reconnect to the network.
Any ideas on how I can get around this limitation? I can't imagine I'm the only one who's attempted to do something like this. Thanks.
I installed samba filesharing (in play store) onto my Galaxy S (CM9). This allows you to access your phone's storage while tethered by wifi to it. No router is required. For playing the video I use BS Player. Seeking works well and even 720p mkv runs without a problem.
Great! I'll give that a try and report back with the results. Thanks!
edit:
It works! I simply installed Samba Filesharing on my phone then with my tablet tethered scanned using the LAN settings on ES File Explorer. Works like a charm. Thank you so much!

Is there any simple way to stream from S4 to tablet?

I have several mkv files on my 64GB sd card thats in my galaxy s4 and would like to simply use my nexus 10 with mxplayer pro and stream any of those mkvs from the phone to the tablet. I can't believe how unbelievably difficult this is. I do NOT want to transfer the file because there is no space on the nexus to copy any one of these mkv's over, is there anything out there that would allow streaming via wifi direct? Blows my mind how simple file sharing/streaming is made so difficult between android devices.

I'm new here and certainly no expert but I was trying to figure out how to get my s4 to connect Ad-hoc to my laptop. Finally after searching and being told it couldn't be done without editing code I realized I was going at it from the wrong side. I found a program that turns my laptop into a virtual router and I use Samba to make my droid visible on the network so I can stream or file share very easily. There are router apps on the play store. Though I have not tried it, it is worth a shot. GL.
