Now you can play the Polyphonic Ringtones on your XDA-I,Qtek1010,Siemens SX56,MDA-1 and T-Mobile with full instruments just by installing this file into your device  :
- MIDI56.sa.CAB
How to:
1- Copy the MIDI56.sa.CAB into your xda to any place you want then open the Explorer from your XDA,goto the folder you pasted the file in then click on the file after that get a *.mid file paste it into the \WINDOWS\RINGS,
Open the Phone from Settings and select the midi file you want it to be as your ringtone.
2- For whom the ringtone still doesn't work at all you just neet to extract the file >>CameraRC132_WWE_1.5.sa.zip<< and copy the cab file to your device and install it. Get the file from :

I don't have the code that you're asking about bcz I didn't write it! I took this cab file from the Newest Himalaya's Extended-Rom
Your MIDI56.sa.cab has problems
Not that it matters that much to some folks...but in case you have an XDA-1 /MDA/PPC Phone Edition....I can confirm the following:
1. With WM2003, you will definitely need the Camera------.cab file installed, plus the MIDI56.sa. Mind you, you will have to install the MIDI56.sa file first, and then install the Camera------.cab
2. It will use up about 600+ K of needless memory on your XDA-1 because obviously, we don't have camera's. So.....what're you to do ? Well, go to
\WINDOWS
and look for Camera.EXE ( approx 500+ K )
Then, what you can do is launch Album, and look again at the \WINDOWS directory...and you will see a bunch of bitmaps obviously ( among other things ). Now..what you're looking for is files dated from 8/20/2003 ( that's 20/8/2003, for you folks EAST of the Atlantic ). Primarily they're bitmaps that were used by the Camera application. They add up to about 50-60 K. There's probably more files associated with the Camera.exe application that you won't need, plus any references in the PPC's registry will probably need to be ferreted out.
But...once you've done that, you've actually reclaimed approximately 800 K in space. Which on a 32MB unit, is a fair bit of memory.
Enjoy !

Marcelo,
I updated the installation instructions, you needed more to read about it.
Mind you, it doesn't matter what you install first cos I had the camera and album files in ppc b4 the midi cab file so it's ok.
Actually it's taking more than you are claiming, since those files installed in the \WINDOWS you can move them to "\Storage card\Album\Album.exe" "\Storage card\Camera\Camera.exe" like I did and gain back the used space , there's also a help file related to the camera it's about 56 kb you could remove it from "\WINDOWS" plus the little bitmaps. Thus you can as well fix the path in the registry for the files associations + making new shortcuts for the Album.exe,Camera.exe and by replacing them on the old ones.
Excellent !!!
I have to remind people that you MUST be careful when deleting the little bitmaps...look at them inside of Album first before deleting anything.
I had to reinstall my GPRS Monitor application because I deleted one of it's bitmaps by mistake....word to the wise !!!
Also I found TONS for MIDI files ( amateur ones ) to use as ringtones....,now if there were a way to make the ringtone directory point to my storage card, that would be great !!

Marcelo,
Moving the ringtones to the Storage card that was my other issue since a long time. I managed a way to do that it. Well for the first try it was successful but when the ppc turns it self off and some one calls you you’d hear the "windows default" ring and it remains whether you selects another ringtone. I kept a backup up on my registry to restore it back to the last status.
So if you like to share me your assistance I'd be grateful.
I'll give you tips of doing that and the project from here it starts…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S: I recommend a backup on the registry b4 applying those tips
===============================================
1- (Looping Ringtones)
This tweak works perfectly you should apply it to your ppc's:
While playing a wav or midi or a wma as the ringtone the phone has a delay of 3 seconds before repeating, now this is really annoying if you've just created that great wav,wma ringtone, spent time making it loop properly in sound editor or whatever, and then the ppc does the silly delay, well, here’s the fix...
Open the registry editor:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0
Select 'Values'
And modify 'Script' by removing the w3 (eg. change 'av0pw3r' to 'av0pr')
"w3" stands for "Wait 3 seconds" you can make it "w1" or "w4" or remove to make the ringtone loops
===============================================
This tweak works for the first time you do it but when the ppc turn it self off the ringtone you selected won't play again :S be noticed.
2-Ringtones on SD/MMC Card
Open the registry editor:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0
Select 'Values'
Select 'Sound' and change the Value Data: \Storage Card\path to wav\wavname (eg. \Storage Card\Ringtones\mytone.wav)
We need here more try about this tweak and good ways to fix so ppl let’s do some tests
===============================================
This is the registry key where all ring tones s/w is playing whenever it comes to customizing a phone ring tone ... including PZP
and that's why all these s/w keeps a "live" component in the back ground to override what Windows is updating each time.
So, PZP was designed as today plugin, so Windows will force it to update the ring tones with each system referesh ... other s/w may keep a background process DLL running or to reconnect cprog.exe to their DLL ... or even to trap the system events to cprog.exe and redirect them to their handler.
So, I think (I might be wrong too ) the trick is to build a live demon to keep updating this registry key.
Necessary Files
I've been able to cut the necessary files for polyphonic ringtones down to ~570KB. Keep in mind I did this on a device with a ROM that was already cooked with supposed "support" for polyphonic ringtones, so there may be other files it is relying on. At any rate, the kitchens need to be updated with these files, because it doesn't work as-is.
There also may be ways to trim even more down, but this is what I have after many hard resets and adding/deleting files one by one. Hope it helps.
Shawn
My XDA2 now has a Sandisk 512MB card.
I also have Journal Bar, SPB pocket plus, Lextionary, Pocket Atlas, Pocket Stars, Currency Convertor X, a few games, (and a few others which I ran out of memory).
What I want to know is how exactly do I get the programmes to run from the sd card, so that the XDA2 memory isn't used to store them.
I have tried x-backup, and I have tried cutting the files using file explorer to the sd card, but then the programmes do not run from the start menu.
I'm sure it's something simple but please let me in on it!
So near, and yet so far!
well when you install programs using activesync you can choose between
if you want to install it in main mem or storage
some programs dont work though if you install them to the storage
if you dont want to install the programs again you may be able to edit the shortcut and pointing the path to the new location and some programs may also require some regediting for them to work after being moved
if you dont want to edit the shortcuts then you can just make new ones
whats under programs is just which shortcuts that are located in windows\programs
Thanks for the help.. made sure I said no to installing in default directory.. now to see if each programme works.. Thanks for the help!
Similar position
Hi Gumby I'm in a similar position to you in that I just got a 512Mb SD today and I intend to rebuils my system with appropriate applications on the SD. Have you found out yet which work from the SD and which only work from ROM?
It would be halpful for everyone if we could get a list of what should go where.
Lets share tips for freeing magician's main memory instead of replacing with 128...
Whats Ur tip ?
Here's mine:-
1. Learn how to use the built in applications to their max before adding 3rd party software.
2. Don't load anything into Main Memory that you can avoid. Use Storage and Storage Card instead.
3. Eye Candy = Memory Bloat. A recent Unit Conversion programme I tried needed 1.8MB FFS. A freeware equivalent which is just as functional but without the candy takes just 39K. Learn to live without it.
4. If you haven't used an app in the past month, delete it.
5. Delete programs that you only use to show others how cool your Jam is.
6. After a couple of months with the Jam, make a list of all software installed. Award points for the number of times you've used each app, and how inconvenienced you would have been if it wasn't there. Backup and Hard Reset. Install only those apps which got high use and inconvenience scores. This also gets rids of all the DLL junk that trial programs put in \Windows.
Do a full backup before first!
1. Use WinCE Cab manager to modify the installation path of CAB file before installation of the program. U could remove unnecessory file inside the cab too. (Some exe installation actually put the cab in yr desktop's C:\Program files or C:\program fies\MS Activesync, modify it w/ WinCE Cab manager before actually install the program to yr pda)
2. Use Memmaid (need $) or SystemPath (freeware) to move some DLLs to storage or SD card.
The following better do it w/ Resco File Explorer w/ "hide files in rom" so U know better what U can delete:
3. Some software (Resco file explorer, Pocket plus) leaves some "help wizard" graphic files in Windows directry after installation. Use yr photo album to screen and remove them
4. Many html help files in Windows and Windows\help can be remove safely if U never look at them before. (I wonder anyone ever look at them)
5. Remove unnecessory or unuse templates and file in MyDocuments
Even though I got a lot of software installed (including the MS Voice Command installed in Storage) . I still get 35mb of main memory left.
I cancel the extended Rom install then just install what I wanted. the patches and configuration Cab I installed. But I did not install fax software Caller ID etc which I never use. wow now I have a lot of main memory

Do a hardreset ( Softreset and on key ) .. and when U have set up the PPC .. and it says tap on screen .... U just do a PIN reset ( soft reset ) so it dont install the Extrom software.. after the softreset .. its a clean 2003 SE ..
U then use fileExplorer to install whats in the now visible External rom.
I didnt install any intelli stuff on my s100 and gained almost 2mb just on that. ..

Can I extract the Caller ID and install it separately...cause I use it, but I do not use other apps in my rom?...
Regards,
Primoz
p.s. If is some other apps like Caller ID I could use instead of CID?...pls suggest...
yes you can. it is in another thread here in this forum.
after hard reset and first time setup (set location, calibrate screeen) you will be prompted that setup is complete tap screen to continue. after you tap the screen perform a soft reset this will stop the auto install and you can choose what you want to put on your device by looking at EXT ROM folder. I've just finished hard resetting and have opted not to install JAVA midlet manager, Caller ID, and Fax. saves a lot of mem i think.
the only thing i installed on main memory is resco explorer, omegaone batt pack pro, sbsh pocketbreeze and pocketweather (3 out of 4 are today plug-ins and I wanted them to load faster) I have my tones in 'Storage' instead of \Windows\Rings\
Find this freeware and install it: clearnotify_install
It removes a lot the crap that end up in memory in a soft reset. It added like 8MB of free main memory back for me.

Do U have some problems....like apps not responding or sth else?...cause if U read in some other threads if U change the default ring dirctory to the SD card after a while it put back the default ring tone...from windows directory. Looks like the SD card when not used is put in like "sleep mode"...

i'm with primoz on this! how do you know which dll are safe to move? and how do you modify the apps to look at which dll???
also would like to streamline my JAM (did a hard reset this am and did not install EXT ROM stuff except MMS client and the patches) am using 8.82MB of RAM for storage.
I have bought tweaks2k2 and did the scan/move of dlls it only moved 1 dll. it said i could do it manually but am afraid.
Apps in Main Memory:
OmegaOne BattPack Pro
SBSH PocketBreeze (I know it is a bit big but it is a today plugin so I want it loading fast)
SBSH PocketWeather (Used to have this in SD but it was very slow, again this is a today plugin)
Resco Explorer (of course I wanted this in main so I can browse other cards)

Apps in SD:

Astraware TextTwist
Astraware Zuma
HnH Eng Chi Dict
MOBEM Mconvert
Illium Soft eWallet
Agile Mobile Messenger
Aidem Majong Academy

bnycastro I have done a hard reset as said in this forum. Before I`ve got about 13megs of used ram for appz installed in main memory. After a hard reset I have about 8megs of used ram and I`m happy . Some appz have installed in to storage, other (larger) on the SD card. From the ext_rom I just installed the MMS and caller ID....and some patches (don`t know why they are needed). I would like to upgrade memory to 128mb...but is too expensyve...and the only company that performs this is too far away (France I think)...

Why Sprite at all if space is a consideration? Doesn't the Xbackup that comes with the Jam work for you? Ir does Sprite do anythign different?
primoz: we are on the same boat as they say. i also have done hard reset and now only installed patches and caller id (no dialer and other stuff). The 128mb ram upgrade is also avialable in the US but I am in the Philippines the shipping alone would be expensive!!!
skagen: spritepocket backup is the best backup utility out there imo. it has scheduled backups (i.e. my pocketpc is scheduled to backup every 3am) battery monitoring (i.e. my pocketpc will run a backup when my battery hits 25%--this is user defined), you can make self-restoring backups (just tap and it will restore even without the app installed) it is very powerful (you can choose what to backup/restore) and worth the $$. this app has saved me from alot of heartache and headache a couple of times already you should try it out xBackup is poo compared to this app.

All of the above can be put into the 7.6mb storage, including the various crap that Resco spews all over the Windows dir Use whereismyram to find which files in \Windows are in RAM, use systempath to create a dir in \Storage, and move pretty much everything. I've got tons of apps installed on mine, but only 1.5mb of stuff in RAM - everything else is in \Storage or the SD card.
Primez...
Anytime I install a new software I always choose to install into my 1GB SD Edge card. You can use Cab Manager if you want a more detailed result of what files go where, but I just search the registry with Resco Registry and change the paths to point to the storage card. dll files I purposely put in system folder. I've had a couple of problems with very minimal software such as batter back pro. But overall I have 85% of my software in Storage Card. Let's make this thread better, so that we can avoid upgrading to 128mb's. I have like 30 programs already and have 35 mb's of main memory left.
Look in Windows\AppMgr and copy a dll file into the system folder in the storage card, do not cut it. You can do same with Windows directory. Then change the value in the registry in every instance that you find it. Then soft reset the device to make sure you get no errors. Start the program and see if it works. If it does, delete the original dll file and do a soft reset. Try the program again. If it works you're good to go, if it doesn't then you found a toughy and move on. Remember to do full backups, if you do then you should not be scared to do anything for you can always restore.

Hi,
I am reading for the post that people make use or make bigger \storage folder.
I never use or didn't know that \storage folder can be used as \storage card folder (SD Card). So far I only know that it is used to keep contact, todo, calendar, and connection.
Could I put file, program, wav or mid file on it to make use of \storage folder?
Can somebody please explain.
Thanks!
Arto
keep it i your mind as just only another sd-card storage but with better spped times.
What I heard is SD is faster than storage.
But the REAL advantage of storage over SD is yr PDA will not supply power to SD in suspend mode. And time is needed to initialize it from suspend mode
Therefore, if yr PDA want to loaded program installed on SD from reset (or suspend) mode, it may complaint it couldn't found the program or low batter error
anansky thanks.
Could I install something like Skype on \storage folder? And can I run it like normal program afterthat?
I should try it myself, but I am too lazy
Regards,
Arto
yes, U could.
But for skype, I would rather install it on SD (unless U are using an SD wifi card) since it doesn't needed immediately after an suspend.
Good canadiates of program to be installed on storage will be Today's plugin, driver, Beta Player (in case I switch the SD for the songs), DLL (using MemMaid to move dll from main memory to storage), and programs I needed even I need to take out the SD (eg. Resco file manager, Resco Register editor, Burr Oak's Hot Button, Pocket Hack Master, Voice Command and Pocket Informant)

I have the impression that the \Storage (ROM) has slower read/write speed compared to main memory (RAM) so I wouldn't install my frequently run programs like Today's plugin into \Storage.
Would the OS use the \Storage space as working memory when main memory runs low? I've got a feeling that it would not...

Yes, ROM is MUCH slower than main memory. But mini only got 4x mb main memory left and some programs and DLLs must installed in main memory to work (Chinese Plugnin, Voice command ... etc). People like me who runs serveral applications at the same time (GPS software, BetaPlayer, Phone) have to sacrifty some speed over stability.

T-Mobile NL MDA Compact upgrade works
Hi,
Just wanted to drop a note that the magician_os1.11wwe_bigstorage works, I just upgraded my T-Mobile Netherlands MDA Compact.
However, I did have some troubles getting the rom image on my SD card (sections=1 not allow, update! errors). After tried about 4 different cheapo brands of SD cards, I finally got it working on the boxed 256 MB Sandisk MiniSD w/ adapter which came in the T-Mobile package.
As this 15 page thread mentions a whole spectrum of bytes to copy varying from 220 bytes in the original doc, up to several MB's, the number of bytes I copied is exactly 416 decimal bytes (that is 1A0 hex, i.e. HDD Hex Editor showing Sel: 00000000-000001A0 (416 bytes) in the right bottom corner).
All files I used for the upgrade are on http://www.crapware.nl/qteks100/

Various options here mate (listed in order of user level):
In WM5+ you can choose to install to the Storage Card by default - any programs that cannot be installed here will usually tell you when you try, and ask you to try again in the correct folder.
Go get yourself a copy of a program called Pocket Mechanic and it has an option that lets you move programs to your storage card (it changes all the links/shortcuts and reg entries for you) - it can also move the 'My Documents folder and IE cache, too - saving even more space.
Find a program called CECabManager (30 day trial) which lets you edit the cab files for programs and change their default install folder.
WARNING
ALWAYS backup your device before playing around with this stuff - it's a real P.I.T.A. when you have got yourself almost set up, then you destroy the system, or cause a glitch!
My best advice is to go buy a copy of Spb Clone and install that before you fiddle about! Also, backup your PIM data to Outlook, or with Spb Backup, too! Then you're pretty much safe to do what you want, as you can always go back if all goes tits up!

No idea - anyone?
I think that if you have too little space, you'll be in trouble when some programs run as they may need to use it as RAM or a swap file - I've filled it to within a MB or 2 and it has slowed down the system!
See my post in this thread for how I keep space in my Storage area (at the bottom of the second post)

If you're looking to speed up your system, why not try an overclocking utility?
I've just got Pocket Hack Master - I'm testing it now! I've used Anton's Pocket Mechanic for ages now, and so I'm pretty confident in the quality of the app.

And there is a starter guide here:

Let me know your results!

Don't fancy clocking my CPU realy wanting to know if it's worth the effort of hacking all my *.cab files and OEMs to install into sub folders rather than windows\ Idear been Keeping as little as posible in the windows\ "folder" I could have a sleep some times waiting for file explorer to finish opening windows\ was hopeing that if there's less in windows\ the device my run faster with a smaller directory ??

Possibly...
You could always try using Pocket Mechanic!!
Instead of hacking the cabs, you could just use Pocket Mechanic - it will move the programs across to your SD card and change all the reg entries, links, etc. for you!
I find that there are some cabs that really don't like to be hacked! But, if that's the route you want to go down (saves having to do it all again in the future), then CECabManager is definitely the way to go! Pretty pricey software, but gives you a nice 30 day trial period to play with it! Just remember to remove any 'setup.dll's' from the tree in the left-hand window if you change anything - can cause the install to muck up if you don't!
And the best bit of software on the net in my opinion is Spb Clone (god I love Spb software - it's just so good!) - once you get your system looking and working how you want it to, just clone the whole thing on to some spare space on your card and you're safe from any general errors! Use Pocket Mechanic to move all your documents, mail and cache folders onto the SD card and you're even safer - go one step further and get Spb Backup to save teh PIM data onto your SD, too and you get ultimate safety (as long as you remember to save reguarly LoL!):
PIM synced with main PC or onto SD with Spb Backup
Documents, mail and cache on SD
Clone of system on SD
Any screw ups, any dodgy software, ANY problems and you just go back a few days!
SORTED!!

Free even MORE space!!
Found a way to get even more space! Really helpful for me when I want to play certain games, as some of them were refusing to start as they needed more space than I had. I managed to claw back about 8meg, but then I have somewhat overloaded my BAs with about 250 apps/games! )
Using Pocket Mechanic, you can move the AppMgr file from the Windows directory of you BA onto your Storage Card - (the original folder structure will be recreated if you try to install anything new!) - when it's finished, just soft reset your BA and VIOLA! more space in the storage section.
***********NOTE***********
If you want to delete any of your apps - or even install a new version over the top of an old one, you have to move the corresponding folder from the AppMgr folder on your Storage Card back into Windows/ApMgr or the uninstall/reinstall will fail - If you haven't installed anything since you last moved the AppMgr folder, then you will have to create the AppMgr folder before moving the folder of the app you wish to delete.
Have fun,
