xda mini s - mini sd + program memory question - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hello xda-ers,
Im newbie here. Just got my xda mini s, and love it. till it comes to memory problem. It is said that xda mini s (wizard) has 64 RAM installed, which mean allow us to use around 55-60 MB for memory. But when I lookup at setting > memory, my free program memory goes around 22MB and free storage at 29MB. I dont have any program running and my application is closed. Is it normal? or can it be maximized?? Since I use WMP and WMP goes off because 'low memory, cant do the operation' when I test it to play video.
I have 1GB mini sd card, and I consider to use this as memory. Is there anyway to do that?? Can I do it with RAMdisk or whatsoever??
Running System :
ROM 1.5.4.2 WWE
11/8/05
Radio : 01.09.10
Protocol : 4.0.13.20
ExtROM : 1.5.4.102
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

ROM and RAM confusion

I know that JAM has 64 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM. You cant install application in the ROM (unless you cook your own ROM and flash it).
It has also 7 MB Storage, so 64 MB RAM minus 7 MB Storage = 57 MB for Main Memory PLUS program (installed application).
There is a setting in the "Memory" where you can allocate how much to Main Memory and how much to program.
I believe that if you have a lot of main memory your PPC will run faster, just like in PC.
So thats why I use this approach :
- Important (daily usage) applications should be installed in the 7 MB Storage.
- Unimportant applications should be installed in the SD Card
- In the Settings -> Memory, I allocate as much as possible to main memory.
What do you think ?
First of all: The 7 MB \Storage is ROM, not RAM. When you use the bigstorage ROM the \Storage area is approx. 27 MB.
Daily usage in RAM or ROM, unimportant apps/large apps on SD.
Fiddling with the memory slider has only a temporary effect.
so then the big storage is using 20mb from a redundant part of the rom then? as in unless you do the big storage upgrade your have 20mb sitting around doin nothin? and that could be used for programs without using a SD card or puttin them into main memory and therefore allowing you to free up ram while runnin at main memory speed + reliabilty?
Speedn
sorry it was confusing me too
The 20 MB ROM you get extra with a bigstorage ROM contains cabs that are automatically installed after a hard reset, so you have to back them up first if you still want to use them with a bigstorage ROM. Instructions can be found on this forum...
The internal ROM (Storage) is slower than RAM. I'd recommend to use the RAM for very often used programs and today plugins. This is onyl an issue when loading the application (because it's then loaded into the RAM).

Is this where your RAM is disappearing too?

Guys,
I've just been doing some optimisations on my XDA when I came across the following. When I have no SD card plugged in I have 24.53MB of RAM free. When I plug my 1GB SD card in I have 16.21MB Free. If I install the ROM unlocker I go down to 7.83MB. This is a lot of RAM just to access the external storage cards. (Yes the Extended ROM is treated like a storage card) What RAM usage is everyone else seeing for memory card mounting?
It would be great if some of the gurus could look at this and give their opinions.
Regards,
Tim

Be interesting to see others results, but (bearing in mind i havent soft reset)
Using a 2GB SD card, my current program memory available is 20.25MB, taking it out for about one minute my memory went to 20.30MB.
Putting it back in memory went down to 20.19MB then back to 20.25MB.

Have you been messing about in the registry to try and speed up your phone? If so that's where all your memory is disappearing to. When I plug in my SD card the memory drops by about 500k, not 8 MB.
Thanks for the quick feedback. So far the only hacks I've used are the Highresources cab file and the ones found in Tweaks2K2. I may need to do a hard reset to verify the results on a clean install and take it from there.
BTW I'm using the latest imate ROM 1.30.76 WWE on the XDA Exec.
4gb transcend SD in --> 19,33mb ram
4gb transcend SD out --> 21,64mb ram
512 SanDisk miniSD in --> 19,52mb ram
(with the 4096kb cache enabled)
It's just 0.4 MB drop for my 2GB Sd Card.

These tweaks will probably have enabled the storage manager\FATFS\cachesize and set it to 4096 ie 4MB.
They may have also activated the fsreplxfilt filter (In the same storage manager registry branch) also setting the ReplStoreCacheSize to 4096.
I used to have them active and my program memory starting at 20MB would frequently go down to 12mb - now i have about 26MB and after alot of use stays around 17-20MB.

Here's a link to the Windows Mobile Team Blog which explains where all the memory goes when you fiddle with the registry (either manually or through tweaking programs)

spv m500 with bigstore help

hi just done a Magician to 1.13 + 1.13 Radio + BigStorage how do i now if i got BigStorage install on my phone as i still have 64 mb could some help me out thanks
One way is to check your memory and select Storage and not Storage Card. If BS is installed then you'll see ~27MB of free space. Secondly, using Explorer try copying a file to the Storage.
do i have bs then
hi is the right total storage card memory 26.72mb. in use 16.04mb, free 10.68mb, does that mean i have bs then thanks for your help so far

Only 44MB of RAM instead 64MB

HI!
I have a Orange SPV M600 and I'm wondering why there is only 44MB of ram showed in memory aplet, but when i look at the product information there is shown 64MB, same goes for storage memory in product information it says there is 128MB but in memory aplet it says only 42MB.
Thanks for all the information.
Well, first of 64 MB on the package is always less on the system, just like with hard drives.
It is in fact around 61.3 MB because in real life MB is not 1000KB but 1024 and KB is not 1000 BYTES but 1024.
Then there is the part taken up by the system when its running .
As for storage, keep in mind that half of it is taken up by the ROM (the OS) plus 10MB is taken up by your extended ROM. (Which you can reclaim if you search for the reg settings in the WiKi)

what does mean UNLOECK AND USED FOR STORAGE in ur tagline?
prob means that he removed it to use it for storage space, the way he described to you...
Extended ROM is hidden by default and used by Cell companies to store their customization installation.
In my case (imate ROM) it contains Backgummon, eTrust and old Skype version.
Using reg settings found in the WiKi the ext ROM can be shown and the files can be removed / added through the file manager.
I use it for some stuff I do not want in main storage but can't put on SD.
where can i download the orange mpv600 rom?
i wanna try.

ROM vs Ext ROM vs RAM vs Flash

I've upgraded to Tomal 8.5 and now have the following stats on my home screen:
RAM : 24MB
ROM : 38MB
ExtROM : 10MB
Flash: 12MB
I used to have tomal 8.2 so am used to the flash disk and can see that ExtROM maps to a device named "Storage" but what is "ROM" for, is that free space i can use? This also adds to my confusion over Storage vs Program memory, it looks like ROM = "Storage Memory" and RAM = "Program Memory". Also when you install things it asks you if you want to install to the device or flash / sd card etc. Is "Device" ROM or RAM or some mysterious merging of the two?
ARGH!
What is all this stuff? Basically, where (pending my new 4GB SD Card arriving) should i install stuff? where should i save photos from the camera? Is some of it volatile and some of it non volatile? is ExtROM slooow and Flash fast? This is all a bit freaky
It's amazing what you can find in the wiki. There's tons of interesting answers to loads of questions. There's even a section called Memory Storage Types.
ok, i swear that page wasn't there an hour ago thank you
