Is there a credible alternative to Activesnc 4.1 anywhere ? I am absolutely sick and tired of this cr*p.
I want to be able to sync calendar, tasks, notes and files - reliably. That's all. That's not too much to ask is it?
Any ideas ?
TIA, DBo.
I'd be interested in one, been looking for a day or two but pretty new to the PPC thing and not making much progress.
Atm the only surefire way to ActiveSync seems to be, soft reset before sync, again after. It's quite a 1 shot deal, once it's synced, it won't again without a soft reset of the PDA. Note: Never needed to restart the PC used, I have tried this, no difference.
Have you read this?

Solved that problem for me.
reading the other post now ... my activesync kills itself too i need to reboot my pc to make it work again ... apart from that it wont even synch all my contact ... it misses out random ones all the time
Can't tweak my TCP settings
I'd love to do this, but I can't go messing about with the TCP settings on my company laptop. Not if I want to keep my job.
I need a decent alternative to AS 4.1 even if that means AS 4.2
Silentz:
Yeah, tried that (amongst several hundred other things). I already use DrTCP for optimising my lans due to me using gigE with jumbo packets, so am pretty familiar with it on that ground. I also tried many other reg tweaks (on the PC not PPC) regarding networking etc. to no avail.
From all the tests and tweaks I've done I'm no further into solving this issue, which doesn't half stick in my side. PC m$ os with m$ software talking to a PPC with m$ os with m$ software, who the hell is writing this utter drivvle software?
I have concluded however that the PC / ActiveSync 4.1 side of things does not fail or lockup, regardless of reboots or no reboots or net settings used. It is the PPC's running ActiveSync which borks, stalls then grinds to a halt. I suppose it's possible m$ will fix the PC 4.1 software to not bust the PPC but I've also pretty much resided myself to needing a ROM update to fix the PPC half
This of all things annoys me, I've fixed almost everything else wrong with this phone but turning it off on a regular basis just takes the biscuit, like who does that nowadays?
Yeah that's right - it's the PPC which goes funky, but in my case it was down to the PC (i think) cramming data at it.
If you switch off (untick) all elements of the today screen it also works better, although that's not really a solution!
Microsoft do need to release ActiveSync 4.2 asap.
Yeah, tried all that, I only have MSN on today page anyways but have tried it with nothing. I only sync contacts anyway and even then only about 100 - still hangs if not the first time...
What about this?
Device Manager
Hi,
I was successful in resolving a "stubborn" active Sync, by doing the following:
Remove USB Cable to K-jam.
Open device manager.
Go to Network adapters.
Disabling adapter called: "Windows Mobile Based Device".
Re-enabling adapter called: "Windows Mobile Based Device".
Plugging USB cable back in.
Kind regards
Adrian

But for how long?
I find that AS is very unstable.
I have installed the latest ROM and still get problems with both my devices.
If I play an MP3 in Windows Media Player, AS drops the connection and I have to unplug my MDA Vario (or my XDA Mini S) and reconnect it again.
If I soft reset for any reason while still connected to AS, it drops the connection and on re-connect it hangs at 'Looking for changes' and I have to re boot the PC to get a connection again.
Other times without warning it will drop the connection and not re-connect without a re-boot of the PC
etc. etc etc.
Fortunately all my contacts, calendar and tasks are held on my PC in Thunderbird (I don't use Outlook) and I have a seperate sync programme for syncing them so I don't need to rely on AS for data sync.
But I do wish there was an alternative for enabling the connection to the PC.

Hi all. Heard there's a newer version of ActiveSync on another thread. namely Activesync 4.1. Can anyone give any feedback confirming this (although I think it's still in Beta stage). If so, isn't it worth a try given the problems encountered on the Universal using just Activesync 4.0.
Someone must know!
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=28535
Well I have it installed and I don't see anything different. Probably bug fixes. Won't harm to upgrade.
i have 4.1 running, dont know if its connected to the activesync on universal always restarting but i can only sync with pc if i have the universal powered off, then when plugging it in i see the orange power led kick in, 10secs ish later active sync will start,
if i plug in when switched on i get a error bubble on pc saying i have a malfunctioning device, power off and plug back in, wait a bit, i have a working syncing device. wierd!!!!
i only got usb1 on this lappy and my other has 2.0 had same problem, so i dont think its a usb problem
no bugs on my side
i installed 4.1, and it works like a charm on both pda2k and universal

It took a while to work out, but here it is: Skype works fine as long Activesync is not on. In the old machines, AS would kick in and appear in the memory only after you sync'd. Here it comes up automatically, whether you sync or not. In fact, you should see Active sync running in the background virtually always.
Clicking on the memory you'll see its always on, you press stop, and Skype works for 5-10 minutes, until AS turns tiself back on.
Any fixes for this in the registry?

Great stuff Nabil! Now, can someone please check if there are still issues with ActiveSync causing problems with Skype? I would do it, but I don't have my Universal yet! Waiting on the MDA Pro or Exec.
I'm not entirely happy that Activesync is workig the way it was intended & as I was unable to get this confirmed from several forum members, I ventured out of Xda developers.com to seek confirmation of my doubts.
I ended up reading a review of the new Dell Axim X51v Pocket PC, which as you may or may not know, uses WM 5.0 (but less the phone side of things). Not exactly to my surprise, i found that even in non-phone PPC devices, Active sync is a bit of a cause for concern!
Read here: Review of Dell Axim x51v PPC (WM 5.0)
Windows Mobile 5: Not All is Golden
I won't delve too much into Windows Mobile 5 in this review, since I'm focusing on the X51v itself, but I found Windows Mobile 5 very painful in two ways when I was setting up and using the X51v. First, after a hard reset I connected the X51v to my PC and set up a new partnership. ActiveSync 4.0 has a different partnership wizard if you have a Windows Mobile 5 device, and it's quite intuitive. I entered my hosted Exchange account information, then watched as basically nothing happened. The X51v synchronized with my desktop PC, but coughed up an 0x85020006 error when the device tried to sync with the Exchange server. ActiveSync 4.0 removes the option for Internet passthrough - I assumed that meant it was automatic, but after fighting with Connection Manager on the X51v for 15 minutes I gave up and disconnected. I turned on WiFi, and the X51v saw my access point - I entered my WEP key, started ActiveSync, and clicked sync. It worked! Within a few minutes I had all my data on the X51v - but why wouldn't the synchronization work in the cradle? I have no idea, but it's a serious problem.
Later, I wanted to see if a particular ActiveSync bug had been fixed: I've always had the problem where, after a backup and restore, the Pocket PC has been unable to synchronize against the Exchange server again. Only a hard reset would allow the Pocket PC to sync again. On the X51v, I did a backup using the included application, then hard reset and a restore. I restore the device, then after a soft reset I noticed the date was wrong. No matter, I fixed it and started a sync session. Much to my delight, the sync actually started, which is sometime that wouldn't have happened under Windows Mobile 2003SE.
My delight turned to disbelief, then anger as I saw what ActiveSync was doing: it duplicated 900 contacts, 50 emails, and 6 months worth of appointments! No warning, no "Replace, Remove, or Combine" dialogue box, simply a duplication. It will take me hours to fix this manually, unless I can find a tool to remove duplicates. I have memories of such a tool, but at this point I haven't had time to track one down. Any suggestions for one that will work with Outlook 2003 and an Exchange server? I'm unsure as to whether this is a problem with Dell's backup application, or with ActiveSync. The bottom line is that in this instance Exchange ActiveSync remains broken after a restore - and I'd rather have it break completely then duplicate all my data, so from my point of view it's actually gotten worse. I didn't think that was even possible!
Suffice it to say that while Windows Mobile 5 brings with it several key advantages - persistent storage is amazingly helpful - my experience with it so far has been mixed (WMP 10 Mobile retains its horrible library functions), and I have no shortage of feedback for Microsoft at the MVP Summit coming up in a few weeks. Windows Mobile 5 feels like one step forward and two sideways.
End of this part of the review. Full Review here: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,43092&start=2
What do you guys think? I think quite a few problems Universal owners are experiencing will dissapear once MS fix their ActivShite application!
Just about to open Windows (on the top floor) and throw this thing through it!
Been waiting for months to upgrade to exec from xda2s, and 18hours after opening the box i'm ready to junk it. Cannot get it to sync at all. Read all the forums, zone alarm off, norton off, tried running as4.1, and still i'm getting dizzy watching this little green wheel going round and round and round and round and round..... 'connecting'
Does anybody have a work around or managed to get it to work. Without this facility the units useless to me, apart from maybe a quick £300 quick profit on ebay.
Help please.
I had a simlar problem, until I reluctantly ditched all my other Active sync partnerships (like my xda2 PPc partnership). then created a new partnership and it worked fine.
Good luck
Hi, Stupid question, but where do the older profiles live on my pc? I've looked in the activesync folder but no clues.
Open Avtivesync, go to file, click on mobile device, check and see what devices you have listed. then go to Delete mobile device.
This realy was a quick fix for me , you should be able to have multiple patnerships, perhaps some one else could suggest a better solution.
Thanks for your advice, but it looks as though I had deleted all previous profiles when I did a clean install of as4.1, and still getting dizzy!
Thought about calling O2, but quickly realised I would have better luck just ringing a random number out of the phone book.
I've tried every combination in the connection settings box, still no joy.
Need a solution soon before I reach for the Scotch and Razor Blades.
I've completely given up with this thing. Managed to get it back in the box (which was a minor challenge compared to getting Activesync to work), somebody please save me from ebay.
Do you have you Exec running in Corporate mode? I found that in this mode it won't sync; you just get "Connecting"...and nothing.
I switch to basic or personal and it syncs with no problem. Myabe this will help.
If the machine you are trying to sync with is connecting to an Exchange Server then you will have difficulties.
Try syncing the calendar, contacts and tasks direct with the exchange server and do the rest (notes etc) with the laptop.
Activesync 4 is so rubbish I have resorted to wirelessly syncing direct to my exchange server.
For a while I was cursing the Exec as I had just got my 2s just how I wanted it when I up(?)graded but I remembered that half the fun of these things is solving the problems, even if it doesn't seem like it at the time!
The main thing that you need to remember with ActiveSync 4.x is that you must install this before connecting your EXEC.
If you don't the microsoft driver gets installed instead (and in my case) no amount of deleting/reinstalling was able to recover the situation.
Whilst I was in the middle of that crisis I did some basic PD to try and rectify. Including
a) Installing AS 4.1 build 4807 on another system (preferably clean installed say XP SP2)
b) trying another cable
c) Doing a hard reset of your device and then repeating above steps
d) (obviously!) removing all previous versions of ActiveSync (also afterwards using regedit to remove any final traces and erasing C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync) and then re-installing
I have tried to include some Device Manager pictures of a working system for reference purposes
Throught trial, and very much swearing at the walls, I've discovered the following:
1. If I have the XDA Exec switched on and connect the USB cable, then I can guarantee a 95% failure to connect.
2. If I turn off the Exec, by the power-switch on side, then connect the USB cable and just leave ActiveSync to power everything up, then I have a 95% success connection rate.
On very odd occasions, I've had to disconnect the Exec, turn it off, then plug the USB in again. And once I restarted the workstation first - probably didn't have to, but was going for a coffee anyway.
AGHHH
I had a failure with Active Sync and established that it still worked with my 2 C500's so I phoned orange.
Eventually made my way to level 3 (highest) tech support to be told that its microsofts problem and that they have withdrawn Active Sync 4 until they can fix it.
I can connect to my M5000, move files via explore but as for the necessity of syncing itand my contacts..............forget it

Interaction with Outlook
My sync problems went away when I configured Zonealarm to allow it to connect.
I also had to install Outlook, which I don't like as I use Thunderbird for Email. Sync would still not work untill I allowed Outlook to be the default email client. However, I have not defined any accounts on Outlook and Thunderbird does not seem to mind.

I got a whole series of increasingly depressed emails from my TBird install after I stuck Outlook on my lappie... In the end I had to take it out for the evening, give it some new extensions and what-not before it started talking to me again...
I have had 3 XDA Execs and two XDA Mini S devices.
I have connected them to a Toshiba laptop running the latest firmware and Windows XP SP2.
I have connected them to a Dell desktop running the latest firmware and Windows 2000 SP4.
In every case, I experienced the following issue - Activesync is unreliable. It will sometimes connect and do a full sync, but more often will fail part way through connecting.
Usually, it will fail to notice that the device has connected at all.
A reboot will usually make the Activesync start to work, but usually the connection is broken before the sync can complete.
I have tried the following:
Disable Windows firewall (no change)
Ensure no other personal firewalls are present (there weren't).
Use ActiveSync 4.1 and 4.0 (no change).
It is now at the point where my current Mini S can't even stay connected long enough to install Microsoft Reader.
3 colleagues with Dell laptops and Minis / Exec devices have also experienced the exact same issue.
Am I really the only one to have expeienced this chronic unreliability issue?
MTU
There are some partially obscure references to the MTU size on the network interface that is created for the Windows Mobile device. Seemingly the default is a whopping 8000 but problems occur with anything over 5000 in practice.
I used DrTCP to identify and set my interfaces to 5000 and this improved stability somewhat but it is still a bit touch and go. Have been too busy to play with winding it down lower but I rather think this would help. I would certainly recommend that you give this a try.
Hope this helps!
Thanks, I'll give that a go. 8000? Usually a TCP/IP MTU is more like 1500... [FX: shakes head]
Usually a TCP/IP MTU is 1492
Hi. I've had problems also with activesync with my XDAII (running WM2005c) and my laptop. I've discovered the problems with synching comes when you're using Outlook 2003 and they usually go away when you use Outlook 2002 or earlier.
Hope that helps.
I am using Dopod838 TC version and Outlook2000 SR-1.
I also experienced some Activesync issue when reconnect to PC after the 1st sync-up(1st sync-up from reset always work). At reconnect and sync, my device go really really really slow, I have to do a reset to fix and sync again.
Upgrade to Activesync 4.1 and take care of the port does not help my case as I can sync once without any issues.
Recently i have installed an application call "Card Expert II" which allows me to switch between USB / Activesync mode. I notes CEII fail to switch to USB mode after disconnect from PC, but after sometimes it do. Then I realize probably something at the background of my PPC is still running which cause this issue.
I try to figure out what in between could help release the sync and at last I figure out if I check the SMS/Email on my today screen and close it again.... Card Expert can switch between USB/Sync mode again. I repeat the same trick and now it can sync without issue ....... Now I am 100% confidence my device will sync again after disconnect from PC.
Now whenever before I connect to PC, I would just click and close the SMS/Email on today screen... It's a bit annoying but this save me from reseting my device each time i try to re-sync up my device. Hope this help.
I have had the same problem with sync., the solution for me is to reboot my PC. So the problem must be there, and I have no clue how to solve it...
My solution is to sync once, then do every other sync via Bluetooth, avoiding the dodgy IP over USB implementation entirely.
Maybe ActiveSync 4.2 will fix it...
Hi,
Have had K-Jam for about a month now. ROM up to date (pending new ROM in next few weeks I believe). Activesync 4.1 installed on WinXPSP2, running Norton Internet Security 2006 (incl firewall etc) on a Vaio Laptop. Out of box the K-Jam synchronised easily and quickly to Outlook through USB, never had any connectivity issues. Synching also worked fine through Bluetooth which I tried only as a test as charging and synching all day was useful at my desk and stopped my speakers making a racket every time the GPRS kicked in to download my email (every 15 mins * 2 accounts). Everything was working perfectly, I was a very happy man and I have to say I am very happy indeed with the K-Jam other than occasional performance issues (bad button/touch screen lag occasionally).
HOWEVER
Firstly, I was hugely disappointed with Activesync 4.1 which seems a big step backwards not least through the loss of useful features such as Backup/Restore. It seems like a nasty cheap alternative to the older Activesync 3.8 which I used happily with my Ipaq for over a year. Nevermind - I bought my own backup software spBackup which runs every night and backs up onto my sd card - a nice feature for when I am travelling without laptop and need to cold boot and restore (something that always worried me with Backup/Restore being based on my PC with AS3.8).
Secondly, the K-Jam hung on an incoming phonecall and the soft reset button would not work. Thank god for spBackup I thought, so did a hard reboot and ran the spBackup executable on the storage card. On restore, the K-Jam looked fine, everything was back to the state it was in at 3am that morning.
BUT
Now, when I plug the USB cable between K-Jam and laptop, Activesync just sits saying "Connecting" with the spinning circle green and never gets any further. I can hear windows detect the device, and the first time I connected it it installed "Generic RDIS device" plus whatever other bits and bobs - so the device is clearly connecting. Activesync just never gets any further than "Connecting". I have searched high and low, but there is nothing other than advice re Windows Firewall (my Norton Firewall for instance). I went to the extent of removing the firewall etc, and have got to the stage that I can confirm that it is not a firewall issue. If I try to get a connection from activesync from the K-Jam, the activesync on the device flashes momentarily and is then in the disconnected stage again. I removed all partnerships from both devices, tried again - no joy. I then tried to synchronise with Bluetooth - Success!
Therefore all is not lost, I can connect with Bluetooth. But it is irritating not being able to connect via USB. My suspicion is that I am going to have to hard reset and reinstall everything once more - but before I go that route does anyone have any advice that may be able to help me?
Thanks.

Had a go. No joy unfortunately.
Looking through the forum there are a lot of issues with AS4.1 which fills me with dread...
I'll keep googling and hoping someone else has resolved this issue.
Thanks.
Activesync just keeps trying to connect and is never successful. I have re-installed Activesync on my pc but it didn't help. Also, my work pc doesn't connect either. Definately a problem with my 8125. All has been well for a couple months and I have added no new software before the problem started. This problem also happened about two weeks after I got the phone and the only resolution was a hard reset. What a pain reinstalling all the software and settings I have now, it's customized just the way I like it. Anyone know how to re-install Activesync on JUST the phone or have any other ideas?
Try the latest activesync 4.2 beta and disable any firewalls if possible on the pc. On the device start activesync application and go to menu\options - delete pc that you are syncing with and try again.
Deleted profiles on both pcs installed beta on one. Still no connecting. Tried clicking SYNC on phone, pauses for a second then nada. No connection.
Have you deleted profiles on the device? and disable firewalls, and if you have a network adapter enable it because latest activesync treats the connection with device as a network - there are many posts on this issue do a search and read through some - seem to be many different factors involved.
First- Thanks for the replies Mark
I removed the PC profiles from my 8125. Also reinstalled Activesync 4.2 on my work pc. Nothing. Although this time I got an error message- Cannot find the file "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65257&clcid=0x409" (or one of its components) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all libraries are available". Like I would know what that means. Anyways, no firewall enabled. Besides, this should not be happening, all of a sudden, on 2 separate pcs. That kinda rules out a pc problem. It has to be in the phone. That, and the fact that a hard reset fixed it last time. I'm thinking something corrupted in Activesync on the phone???
And searching on this forum is useless. I type in "connecting Activesync" and every post with either word shows up. 614 in just Wizard forums alone. Is there a way to search so that ONLY posts with both words show up? That way I can modify my wording until I find something useful. Search for any terms or use query as entered is ticked. On other forums you can just use quotation marks but not this one. It makes searching very difficult. ROB
Oh, and yes my network adapters are still enabled as always.
Yes best to search with the word AND cuts out all the other stuff i.e. activesync AND connection would do it. Yep sounds like it may be the device.

Happy reading, the last post is about connecting activesync via bluetooth so maybe thats an option.
Thanks Mark. I think I may try the bluetooth connection when I get home tonight. Or I may just throw in the towel and do a hard reset. that worked last time. Plus, I can install the latest ROM upgrade. Shame theres no way to uninstall and reinstall Activesync on the phone. Seems that should do the trick (maybe). Just tried my friends 8125 on my work pc- syncs just fine. So much for all the pc fixes everyone seems to be trying.
I had the same problem with AS refusing to connect via usb or BT.
In the end i went & purchased (although the demo version would have done) Sprite backup. installed on the PC. Browsed to the install dir to find the cab file. copied to my wizard (wifi, or sd card reader etc).
Insatlled & backed up to SD card
Hard reset
restore
stop here if you're happy, if not
AS to sync calender & contacts to pc
hard reset
update ROM
AS contacts, cal, docs etc back to wizard
install SW & settings
BACKUP
Yep. Had to hard reset. All is working again. Crappy Activesync. What's up with this P.O.S. ? Trying to setup bluetooth now and the pc finds the phone but AS won't connect. The phone finds the pc (HomeCenter) but it shows no services available. I'm assuming that there should be some listed (maybe Activesync?) Guess I'll have to do some searching for bluetooth problems with AS now. Did I mention that AS is a P.O.S??? But you all knew that already.
Dont forget to open a port in you BT settings (on the pc) and tell AS (also on the pc) to accept connections on that port.
Then your wizard should be able to see the AS service on the pc (you initiate the sync from the phone, not the pc)
I have had this problem since day one, and continue to have it despite several (more than 15) hard resets, multiple ROMs, multiple pertnerships etc. I plug in my PPC USB, and it just says "connecting" forever. Every time, after plugging in my USB, I have to shut off my PPC, and turn it back on. Then my laptop finds and connects with my PPC, and syncs all my data like it should. If I do this more than 3 times, my laptop crashes and reboots. If anyone has figured out how to fix this, let me know.
